etro Systems is the in-house IT provider for Metro Group. With its international subsidiaries and IT supply organisations, Metro

Systems delivers IT services to Metro Group companies both nationally and globally.

It is responsible for systems engineering and consulting, developing business solutions, operating data centres, providing network services, IT procurement and group-wide IT strategy and governance principles.

Planet Retail spoke exclusively with Chief Information Officer Silvester Macho about his views on and plans for retail technology and his expectations of IT vendors.

Landscape: Metro Group

Silvester MachoSilvester Macho has been working in the retail industry for 25 years. He grew up in the German city of Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia, and started his professional career as a programmer at Deutsche SB-Kauf, which later became Real.

In 1987, Macho moved to Metro Großhandelsgesellschaft (wholesale company) and worked as Project Manager for the implementation of merchandise management systems. In 1996, following the creation of Metro AG, he was promoted Senior Department Manager with responsibility for the international launch of the retailer’s central merchandise management system.

Macho was appointed Divisional Director at the group’s IT subsidiary MGI Metro Group Information Technology in 1999, responsible for data warehousing and customer information and POS systems. In 2005, he became General Manager and CIO of MGBI, Metro Group’s international buying division, in which he led the development and implementation of the retailer’s supplier portal Metro Link.

Macho was named General Manager of Metro Group Solutions (MGS) in 2008, responsible for the harmonisation of business processes across Metro Group’s 33 country operations.

Following the integration of MGS in 2009, Macho returned to MGI as its Managing Director. He headed the restructure of Metro Group’s IT subsidiary and the launch of Metro Systems in 2010.

Macho is married with one daughter. Before embarking on a career in IT, he played football in his hometown for many years. He enjoys watching the sport and likes to travel with his family.
