Resizing Photographs

Accurately changing the old to new

Resizing Counts!

• If you resize a picture incorrectly it will be immediately noticed.

Need to Shrink• Enlarging photos will likely have poor results.• The picture will end up being blurry or

pixilated.

150%

Bigger is Better

• Reducing the picture size will not alter the quality or clarity.

Real Applications

• When working in any type of media you will have fixed sizes that a picture needs to fit into.

• The customer does not want a poor quality reduction so you need to figure out the exact amount the picture needs to be reduced.

Example• My total workspace for the web page is 1024

X 768 pixels.

Example Pt 2

• The customer wants three pictures on the side of the page, they need to fit into an area which is 400 X 300 pixels.

• One of the pictures we have is currently 900 X 400.

• We need a way to accurately reduce this photo.

Example Pt 3• Current Size 900 X 400• What would the width be if the length was

400?

Second Example• We have a picture 800 X 600• Will it fit into an area of 300 X 275 if we make

the width 275?

Second Example Cont.

• We will use maximum length instead of width.

Maximum Area

• We have a photo that is 700 X 500 and we have an area on a web page that is 350 X 275.

• If we use the length as our first dimension the picture would resize as 350 X 250

• If we use the width as our first dimension the picture would resize as 385 X 275

• The first equation uses all but 25 pixels and the second number is too large, so the size using the maximum amount of area is 350 X 250.

Maximum Area Practice

• Photo is 600 X 800. The space provided is 525 X 350.

• What is the best size to reduce the photo to, using the maximum amount of area?

Max area Practice

• Using the length it ends up being 525 X 700, which is too large

• Using the width the picture would be 263 X 350. This would be the best choice.
