Add value to home by being waterwise

THE long spell of hot dry weatherhas been a reminder to homeowners in the Peel region aboutgetting smart with water usage,according to Real Estate Institute ofWA Peel representative KentMurphy.

Despite last week’s steady rain,Mr Murphy said metropolitan damswere under 30 per cent capacity.

“Sprinkler restrictions look likethey’re here to stay,” he said.

“Irrespective of possible waterrestrictions, people need to bewater-wise for the long term andwe’re starting to see how this willimpact on the housing market andthrough consumer choices.

“Smaller residential blocks ofland are more common andproperties with reticulated gardensmore popular.

“Busy lifestyles, smaller familiesand the increased cost of land arethe primary reasons for shrinkingblock sizes and automated wateringsystems, but there is also a growingappreciation of the value of awater-wise home and of ourgreater environmental

responsibilities. “Each time theState Government brings in waterrestrictions, REIWA agents noticesome increased interest inhouseholds converting to nativegardens, reducing lawn areas, fittingrainwater tanks or switching toreduced-flow shower heads.

“This is understandable, butbefore you attempt a similarproject aimed at being waterconscious, keep in mind what sucha change in your garden, inparticular, might mean for yourhome’s resale value.”

Mr Murphy said mosthomebuyers were fairlyconservative in their housing

preferences. “So, if you’re thinkingof planning a more waterwisegarden while being anxious tomaintain the resale value of yourproperty, keep in mind these fewsuggestions,” he said.

A Florida family’s waterwisegarden has only been finished for amonth, but already is attractingattention. Michael McGuigan saidpreviously there was mostly lawnout the front, now there are cacti, ametal tree and a waterless pebble-lined stream. He also has plans for avegetable patch in the back garden.

Mr McGuigan said he hoped hiseco friendly garden would inspireothers to do the same. ■
