An Extract of the National Inventory of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of

The Iranian Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO) registered this ICH Element under the no. 1516, dated 12 November 2017. (The National Inventory has been updated in March 2018.)

3. Geographical Scope of the Element This element is widespread in the provinces of South Horasan, Razavi Khorasan, North Khorsan, Golestan and Mazandaran which constitute the Dotar-domain region. Dotar is among the oldest and most favorite musical

instruments of the said region. Although one can find somebody who plays it in the other regions of the Iran.
4. Communities, Groups, Bearers & Practitioners Most of the communities, groups and bearers and practitioners of the element live in the geography described in Section 3. Among them, there exist two famous groups of bearers and practitioners: 1) "BakhshTs" as Dotar crafters and players of the North Khorasan province and 2) "Dotarfs" as Dotar crafter and players of the South Khorasan and Razavi Khorasan. Moreover, there exist other communities among Kurmanji Kurd and Turkmen bearers and practitioners who live in Golestan Province. There are a few but master players in Mazandaran Province. Nowadays, this element has become popular in urban areas of the said region and many individuals especially young boys and girls are very interested in playing the said element.
5. Information about the Element Dotar is one of the most important folkloric plucked-string musical instruments of the most rural and urban areas of the said provinces. lt is more antique than any other folkloric musical instruments in Iran. Dotar has consists of a bowl and neck/handle which the first one is made of dried and dead mulberry wood and the latter is made of dried and dead apricot or walnut woods. lt has two strings and is played by fingers and no spectrum is used. Dotar is mostly made in private and small workshops in villages and cities. There are also a few number of state-sponsored workshops in cities. lt is laid down on the limb of the player. He/she plays it with his/her fingers without spectrum. and Number of frets, size of bowl, length of neck of Dotar vary in different areas of the Dotar-domain region. There are three kinds of Dotar in this region as follows:
- Dotar in South Khorasan province and its eastern part enjoys a voluminous bowl and long neck;
- Dotar in Razavi Khorasan, North Khorasan and Mazandaran provinces constitutes a middle-sized bowl;
- Dotar in Golestan province enjoys a small bowl and a thin neck. This element is used in weddings, parties, cultural events and .... In addition to playing, Dotar players also narrate epic, ethnic, religious narrations, local love stories, lullabies, local poems and songs that constitute a part of cultural and social identity of the concerned communities, groups, individuals, bearers and practitioners.
6. How the element is transmitted? This element is informally transmitted through traditional master-student method. In rural areas, most of the students are the masters' children regardless of age and gender. Kids usually start learning from five years of age. Masters are mostly fathers and uncles of the students. In urban areas, students are mostly young individual boys and girls who go to the private and/or state-licensed music institute, and schools to learn it. The method of transmission is as same as the one practiced in the rural areas.

There are large numbers of young boys and girls who are very interested in this element. As a result, in addition to rural areas, many classes have been established in urban areas of the said region by male and female masters who teach it to their students regardless of age and gender. Its viability is also secured through epic, ethnic, religious narrations, local love stories, lullabies, local poems and the like.
