Ssirum is a valuable heritage of Korean nation that has fostered people's strength, courage,

wisdom and united force for a long time.

Thanks to the correct policy of the Workers' Party of Korea on protecting national heritage,

Ssirum is further encouraged and regarded as a part of the life of Korean people.

Thinking that it absolutely coincides with the spirit of the international convention 2003 for the

protection of intangible cultural heritage to inscribe Ssirum on the Representative List of the

Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and serves as a favorable occasion for the protection of

Letter of Consent

Ssirum is a popular national physical game enjoyed by all Korean people. Ssirum, which is

played among people competing with each other in their techniques and strength on folk days or at

the break of work, add to people the fragrance of nationality peculiar to Koreans and the vitality of

life so that they can devote themselves to the social development with the sound body and the

persevering mind.

For me making it the lifelong will to protect, develop, and transmit the national games to the

rising generations, it is very exciting for Ssirum to be inscribed on the Representative List of the

Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Actively supporting the nomination of Ssirum for the inscription on the Representative List of the

Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, I state my mind to devote my remaining years to writing

books for the sustainable development of Ssirum.

In my village, I haven't been known by the name Ju Chang Yong but by the name the "eldest

man in Ssirum Family".

This is because I have improved the techniques of Ssirum at leisure while engaging in farming

for about 50 years, thus being known as a famous "Ssirum bearer and practitioner" and "Ssirum

trainer".

I am 72 years old now, but when I see the young people competing in their strength at Ssirum

site, I feel much younger enough to compete with them, and that makes me love Ssirum

throughout my life, I think.

Being proud of Ssirum that is loved by all Koreans to be nominated for the inscription on the

Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, I support it whole-heartedly.

Ssirum is a valuable heritage of Korean nation that is loved not only by men but also by women.

On folk days and other national holidays when the husbands and sons compete with each other

in Ssirum displaying their youth and courage, women cook folk dishes and go to the Ssirum sites

with them to cheer them enthusiastically.

When we dry their sweat and entertain them with Makkoli (raw liquor) who have won and are

cheered by spectators, we feel a high sense of excitement that is peculiar to a Ssirum site.

I am very happy to hear that Ssirum will be nominated for the inscription on the Representative

List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and consent to it whole-heartedly.

high level of Ssirum techniques and transmit them to the rising generations.

We took part in the juvenile event of the National Inter-provincial Ssirum Contest this year.

Though young, we are fond of Ssirum.

Fathers, mothers and teachers praise us for doing Ssirum well, and even grandfathers and

grandmothers we don't know pat us and offer foods when we win the games, which makes us feel

very proud of ourselves.

Our teacher told us that the world would see our Ssirum matches and we were beside ourselves
