President’s Message
It is amazing to see how quickly this year is going by.
The temperatures are already dipping and that
means that the exciting holiday season will be soon
upon us. As we prepare for the holidays, we will also
be electing new members to the IIE Twin Cities Board
of Directors.
Through our transition plan, Sean Dveris will be the
President of the chapter for 2014. Sean has been an
active member of the board and I am confident that
Sean will continue to offer his leadership to this
group. With this change, I will take on the role of
Past President.
Tracey Bauer will be the President-Elect and Jeromy
Knapp will be the Treasurer. Both Tracey and Jeromy
have successfully held several board positions. They
will continue to help Sean lead the group.
Christy Strong will be leaving the board of directors
to focus more on working with student chapters.
Christy is a long time member of the board and her
contributions over the years have led to the success
of this group. I would like to thank Christy for her
dedicated service to this group.
Eric Situmbeko, IIE Twin Cities President.

Christy also gave us tips on writing up our
resumes. She suggested that instead of
simply stating the projects we’ve completed
for a class or job, we should describe how we
solved a problem or improved a system
through the project.
She also spoke about her career path and the
opportunities that are available in the health
care industry. Christy gave us great tips for
preparing for our future and the paths we
could take.
As an IIE collegiate chapter we try to bring in
speakers who can help us prepare for life after
graduation. On Friday, October 11th
, Christy
Strong, the new chair for the NDSU Advisory
Board and Project Manager at Boston
Scientific, spoke to a group of industrial and
manufacturing engineering students.
She spoke on some topics of our choice such
as the health care industry, how to obtain an
internship or full time job and women in a
management role. Christy highlighted the
importance of networking not only with
companies, but also with fellow students.
Those connections are important when looking
for a job and are the easiest to make.

As a division of Emerson, Rosemount Inc.
assembles measurement instrumentation
products with many thousands of
configurations and under the guidelines of
approval agencies from all over the world.
This is achieved by utilizing a combination of
checks and balances to ensure that the
customer gets what they require and all
safety and regulatory compliance
requirements are met.
This tour was a unique opportunity for the IIE
group was able to see multiple methods of
achieving this truly one-piece flow for
thousands of unit configurations per day.
Rosemount’s “legacy” line stocks the majority
of component options at each step along the
way with bar code scanning and light curtains
to verify and provide traceability. In an effort
to reduce cycle time and footprint, a new line
utilizing a super-market system with light
curtains and visual indicators has been
implemented. This line allows components to
be picked up-front (rather than point-of-use).
This change required additional quality
investigation with parts handling and
inspection points.
Many thanks to John Roche and Chuck
Kutrzman of the Rosemount facility in
Chanhassen for hosting us!

Change Management Workshop, June 2013
On June 17th
IIE Twin Cities hosted the “Change Management – The ‘soft stuff’ is the hard stuff”
workshop presented by Susan Campion at the Hopkins Center for the Arts. Susan is currently an
adjunct faculty member at the University of St. Thomas where she teaches in the MBA and
executive education programs.
The workshop included the following topics: aligning improvement efforts with business objectives, creating a culture, engaging your
organization, and communicating for change. Susan’s style of using creative examples to demonstrate key success factors kept the day
interesting. It was refreshing to break away from standard manufacturing cases.
The group discussed and shared experience and best practices in:
Elements of lean culture: continuous improvement/ PDCA, bottom-up problem solving/ improvement ideas, teamwork, visual
communication, standard work, relentlessly reducing waste, challenging assumptions, monitoring/ measuring and listening and
valuing opinions from all
Leading a culture change: what leaders can do
The change cycle
Tools: communication planning and stakeholder analysis
Thanks to all who came and participated!

On July 11th
the IIE Twin Cities chapter held
an event at RedEye, by Stratasys, in Eden
Prairie. RedEye is the leader in rapid
prototyping with more than 150 machines
globally. RedEye can build up to 5,000 parts
in two weeks and reduce build times from
days to hours. As companies see the
advantages of the technology, the rapid
prototyping industry is projected to reach
between $230 billion to $550 billion per year
by 2025.
With the growth and capabilities of 3D
printing will come a plethora of
opportunities for industrial engineers to
improve processes. This event provided a
firsthand experience with the machines,
parts, and capabilities of this exciting
technology.
The event started with an overview of
RedEye from the Vice President of RedEye,
Jim Bartel. The overview included a
background of RedEye and Stratasys along
with types, advantages, and applications of
3D printing. After the overview the group
broke into three smaller groups to rotate
through a series of stations and machines.
The first station, concept modeling and
functional prototypes, provided a glimpse of
one of the newest Stratasys acquisitions in
action, the Objet. The machine is inkjet based
producing high feature and surface finished
parts. The second station, manufacturing
tools, highlighted the capability of companies
using 3D printing to create jigs, fixtures,
molds, etc. One example was a tool used to
locate the BMW logo on the trunk of a car.
The final station, low volume production of
end-use parts, showcased how final parts can
be made to meet the needs of the final
product.
The event concluded at Jake's with a little
post event networking. Thanks to RedEye for
hosting the event and to everyone that was
able to make the event.

What is IIE?
IIE is the world’s largest professional society dedicated solely to the support of the industrial engineering
profession and individuals involved with improving quality and productivity. Founded in 1948, IIE is an international, non-profit association that provides leadership for the application, education, training,
research and development of industrial engineering.
With approximately 15,000 members and 280 chapters worldwide, IIE’s primary mission is to meet the ever-
changing needs of industrial engineers, which includes undergraduate and graduate students, engineering
practitioners and consultants in all industries, engineering managers, and engineers in education,
research and government.
What is IIE Twin Cities?
The IIE Twin Cities Chapter 38 provides a network for individuals within Minnesota and surrounding areas to
collaborate about industrial engineering. Our members include professionals with industrial engineering degrees, both working in IE and non-IE roles and
professionals working in IE related functions.
We provide monthly events which include topics in professional development, Lean, Six Sigma, Quality,
process improvement and tours at distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, hospitals and consulting firms. We also promote the industrial engineering profession by providing scholarships to IE students and becoming
involved with several student IIE chapters.
