Did you know? Intek manufactures a flexible extruded plastic cover that sits on top of rink dasher boards in

hockey arenas called SoftCap for the company Athletica. Its design uses hollow channels to absorb

impact 96% better than the material previously used,

according to NHL testing. The NHL expects SoftCap will reduce head, chin, elbow and other injuries and

has approved the product for all team arenas.

Dan and Randy are also members IIE Twin Cities

and we were proud to have them represent us!

Dan accepted the Gold Award on the behalf of IIE

Twin Cities board members.

The 2012 event pipeline is very solid for the

remainder of the year and we have a great summer

planned. The June event is the Intek Plastics Visual

Management & 5S Systems Tour. Then we will

have our 5th

Annual IIE Twin Cities Bean Bag Bash

Tournament in July, followed by a tour of Synovis

Life Technologies and a Target Corporation Tour

with Brits Lawn Bowling in August. Evites® will be

sent out soon for the upcoming events.

I would like to thank board members John Kline

and Jeromy Knapp for creating a new IIE Twin

Cities website. The new website is completely user

friendly and very informational. The website

address is www.iietwincities.org. Check it out for

all IIE Twin Cities information and upcoming

events.

Have a cool and safe summer. I am looking

forward to seeing everyone at the future IIE

events.

President’s Message

John Spriggs, IIE Twin Cities President.

It is hard to believe that year is already half over,

but we have had a variety of IIE events ranging

from workshops to plant tours. We have had

fantastic events this year with great topics and

attendance.

The previous last two events were the 3M

Innovation Center Tour in April and the Didier A3

Workshop in May. The 3M tour was a riveting

event that featured all 45 technology platforms at

3M as well as a hand on experience with the

innovative technologies at 3M. The turnout was

fantastic with 27 people attendees, where over

half were non-members. The Didier A3

Workshop was a wonderful learning experience

which featured A3 tools and principles.

Participants learned how they could utilize A3

problem solving tools at their current jobs,

bringing exposure to what is value-added vs. non-

value added.

The 2012 IIE Annual Conference in Orlando was

held from May 19-23. The current IIE North

Central Regional Vice President (RVP), Dan Thury,

and the previous North Central RVP, Randy

Wahlstrom, attended the conference.

Welcome New Members!

IIE Twin Cities Website

If you haven't noticed, the IIE Twin Cities website has a new look!

We have decided to change to a new host to take advantage of

some great benefits. The two main benefits of the new host are

the following: the monthly costs have decreased and changes to

the website have gone from difficult to super-duper simple! This

will allow us to quickly update the website to keep you up to

date with the latest events, event pipeline and contact

information for the board members.

If you haven't checked out the website, please take a look and

let us know what you think at www.iietwincities.org. We are also

working on a new header and would love your feedback. We will

be sending out a survey soon to hear what you would like to see

when you open one of your NEW favorite websites!

Chapter Activity Report

Focus On: Membership Growth/Retention

A goal for IIE Twin Cities has been to be

proactive in increasing participation and

providing more value to our members. At the

beginning on the year we held a Voice of the

Member (VOM) event to get the ball rolling.

Most of the feedback from the members

showed that we need to have a variety of

events to meet different interests and

schedules! To accomplish those objectives,

we came up with the following actions:

We have made a point to host chapter

events in different parts of the metro

area to ease the commute for members

who would otherwise not travel across

the Twin Cities to participate. Be on the

lookout for events near you!

Some of the strategies and tools they use to

manage its inventory-to-assembly process

flow include: detailed assembly instructions

by model, 5S work station organization,

pick-tickets for larger items, kanbans for

smaller items and a parallel sub-assembly

line to feed the flow. Attendees were given

the opportunity to take photographs, ask

questions and even try out some of the

equipment floor sweeping equipment.

After the tour, several attendees gathered

at nearby Cowboy Jack’s to network. Many

thanks to Nilfisk-Advance for having us and

for everyone that was able to join us!

Tour attendees after the tour, ready to head out to Cowboy Jacks for some good, old fashioned networking!

Past Event Recap

Nilfisk-Advance Tour, March 2012

In March, IIE Twin Cities held a well-attended

tour of the Nilfisk-Advance industrial and

commercial cleaning equipment assembly

facility in Plymouth, MN. Over the past ten

years the company has transitioned from

500+ production workers in a very vertically

integrated manufacturing business model to

approximately 150 workers performing

primarily assembly.

Levi Moore, Manufacturing Engineer Manager

at Nilfisk-Advance, hosted the 26 tour

attendees. The tour consisted of a short

presentation on the history of the company

and the products and a walk through the

mixed-model assembly lines where just over

1000 units are completed annually.

IIE Chapter President, John Spriggs, tries out the Industrial CS7000 Floor sweeper during

the tour.

Past Event Recap

3M Innovation Center Event, April 2012

For example, films: one product line enhances the

brightness in LCD displays while another blocks the sun

from coming through windows. 3M films are used to

create building-sized graphics and to prevent graffiti. Some

are single-layered with humble applications and others

combine hundreds of layers that are tuned to transmit or

reflect specific wavelengths. Still other films provide very

high barriers to oxygen and moisture-a requirement in

next-generation electronic displays.

Following the tour, several attendees gathered at the 5-8

Club for Juicy Lucy’s and toasted the first round on the

dime of IIE Twin Cities. While discussing the various

technologies, everyone had a different favorite but could

all agree that the one hour visit was not nearly enough to

properly experience the various technologies.

Thanks to all who attended!

The tour of the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul was

another big hit for IIE Twin Cities. We had 27 people

were in attendance! Those in attendance were

taken through the story of 3M and its history of

innovation and collaboration. The collaboration

between technology and product groups and with

external customers has resulted in new products

that would otherwise likely not have ever come

about.

Early product milestones included:

The world's first waterproof sandpaper (early 1920’s)

Masking tape (1925)

3M’s diversion into defense materials which resulted in reflective sheeting for highway markings, magnetic sound recording tape, filament adhesive tape (1940’s)

Post-it® Notes (1980)

Much of 3M’s corporate culture is credited to

William L. McKnight, who served as 3M chairman of

the board from 1949 to 1966. He encouraged 3M

management to "delegate responsibility and

encourage men and women to exercise their

initiative." 3M’s heritage dates back more than 100

years, and McKnight's principles continue to guide

3M.

The group ended in a room filled with hands-on

exhibits resembling that of the Science Museum.

Each exhibit represented a category of 3M

technology and told the story of the product

interrelation and how they each tied back to the

adhesives through product samples and interactive

displays.

What is IIE?

IIE is the world’s largest professional society dedicated solely to the support of the industrial engineering

profession and individuals involved with improving quality and productivity. Founded in 1948, IIE is an international, non-profit association that provides leadership for the application, education, training,

research and development of industrial engineering.

With approximately 15,000 members and 280 chapters worldwide, IIE’s primary mission is to meet the ever-

changing needs of industrial engineers, which includes undergraduate and graduate students, engineering

practitioners and consultants in all industries, engineering managers, and engineers in education,

research and government.

What is IIE Twin Cities?

The IIE Twin Cities Chapter 38 provides a network for individuals within Minnesota and surrounding areas to

collaborate about industrial engineering. Our members include professionals with industrial engineering

degrees, both working in IE roles & non-IE roles and professionals working in industrial engineering related

functions.

We provide monthly events which include topics in professional development, Lean, Six Sigma, Quality,

process improvement and tours at distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, hospitals and consulting firms. We also promote the industrial engineering profession by providing scholarships to IE students and becoming

involved with several student IIE chapters.
