THE ARMAND HAMMER UWC OF THE AMERICAN WEST
Report of the President : 2010
U W C - U S A / W W W . U W C - U S A . O R G2
Dear Friend of UWC-USA,
I extend a huge thank you to all of you who
have shown such dedication and support to our
school and our mission. We are all enormously
grateful to the UWC-USA donors who have
stepped up in these tough financial times. Your
support enabled us to keep the school thriving
and strong.
Last year saw alumni continuing their trend of
increasing generosity and support, led by Betrand
Kan ’84 and Sebastien de Halleux ’96, who
demonstrated unprecedented and extraordinary
philanthropic leadership in their endowment
gifts to the school.
Complementing this alumni leadership,
overall alumni giving is increasing, as are gifts
from parents of alumni and parents of current
students, who are also providing crucial support
that sustains the school and the students here.
I invite you to read about the class of 2010
and their extraordinary gift to UWC-USA on
their graduation day. Please also take a moment
to read in detail about a few of the exceptional
students from the class of 2010—our Davis
International Scholars. Learn where they came
from, how UWC-USA shaped them, and where
they hope to take the UWC mission in their
lives. Their voices serve as testimonies to how
your support has allowed them this once-in-a-
lifetime opportunity, one they will now carry
with them throughout their lives.
With gratitude,
Lisa A. H. Darling

Thirteen Schools, One Mission:
UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations, and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.
UWC VALUES
A Sense of Idealism“I can say with all my heart that UWC makes me feel like I can make adifference in the world. The school has inspired me to become a bettercitizen of the world, to contribute with whatever skills I have in the hopeof uniting the world and building a sustainable future. UWC has allowedme to break my own boundaries and limitations, making everything thatI want to achieve possible.” —Max Heng ’12
Personal Responsibility and Integrity“Living on the other side of the ocean from my family and my parents made me able to live on my own. At UWC, I have learned to take care of myself and to balance my life.” — Iris van der Heijden ’11
Mutual Responsibility and Respect“You ask us where we come from. Thank you for asking because now we come from a place of having spoken with you.” —GuoJun Lee ’10
Personal Challenge“The UWC challenge is not the IB. The UWC challenge is not living together with people from all over the world. The UWC challenge is not to stay healthy and get enough sleep. The UWC challenge is to make your UWC experience the one that you want it to be.”
— Paul Cichocki ’12
Action and Personal Example“I feel like it is my duty to make the most out of my opportunities for myself, and for others. It isn’t even just about “making a difference.” For me it is about doing all that I, as an individual, am capable of.”
—Dristy Shrestha ’07
Respect for the Environment“We are making the changes to reduce our environmental impact, and perhaps one day come closer to that ideal sustainable community we strive to be.” — Katie Wiebke ’10
International and Intercultural Understanding“We felt the thrill of community when we came together for common purposes, without needing to abandon our particular beliefs or ways of seeing the world.” —Gabriel Ellison-Scowcroft ’10
Celebration of Difference“We did not gather in order to attain a consensus, a unified voice. We gather here to appreciate, to collaborate.” —Gal Wachtel ’10
Compassion and Service “When I work at the Casa de Samaritan Shelter, I feel immense compassion for many of the shelter’s guests—often they’ve just had a run of bad luck. It drives me to help them and others.”
—Harry Lambert ’12

Bequest A future gift to UWC-USA by will or trust that allows the donor to retain all assets during his or her life. The bequest can be a specific amount, a percentage of the estate, or all or part of the residue once other beneficiaries have been honored.
Charitable Gift Annuity In exchange for a transfer of cash, marketable securities or real estate, UWC-USA contractually guarantees specified income payments to one or two annuitants for life.
Charitable Lead Trust The donor places assets (cash, securities or other property) in a separately managed trust that provides UWC-USA with an annual donation (an arrangement that is especially useful in making pledge payments). At the end of the term of the trust or upon the donor’s death, the trust assets go to the donor’s heirs.
Charitable Remainder Trust The donor places assets (cash, securities or other property) in a separately managed trust that provides the donor and/or his/her beneficiaries
with income payments. At the end of the term of the trust or upon the donor’s or beneficiary’s death, the trust assets go to UWC-USA.
IRAs and Other Retirement Plan Assets Assets in an IRA and other qualified retirement plans are usually subject to both income and estate taxes for family heirs. This tax situation makes such assets an excellent choice for a charitable bequest or for a current gift.
Life Insurance Donors can assign UWC-USA the annual dividends paid on their life insurance policies, or they can make outright gifts of policies that have served their purposes, or they can purchase a policy and designate UWC-USA as the beneficiary.
For more information about making a planned gift, please contact Tim Dougherty, Vice President for Advancement: +1 505 750 1227; [email protected].
Planned giving has many forms, and each planned gift option provides specific benefits and US tax advantages:
n Reduce or eliminate taxes on capital gains
n Convert low-yielding assets to a higher income stream
n Obtain a current income tax charitable deduction
n Provide life-long income for yourself and/or another beneficiary
n Eliminate or reduce federal estate taxes
n Pass assets on to heirs with a minimum of transfer taxes
n Help UWC-USA by financially supporting its life-transforming programs
PLANNED GIVING The support of those who remember UWC-USA with bequests and life income gifts helps ensure the continued excellence of the UWC experience for generations of students to come.
COMMON FORMS OF PLANNED GIVING
“Because I believe in our mission, love our students and our school, and feel strongly that in striving for our mission we make a difference to the world which we inhabit.”
—Ravi Parashar, UWC-USA Economics Teacher
Why Did I Include UWC-USA In My Estate Planning?
U W C - U S A / W W W . U W C - U S A . O R G4
I am a part of a family for which education has always been a priority. Both of my parents are
teachers, and my brother is an alumnus of UWC of the Adriatic and a Davis Scholar at Princeton University. Two years ago I was a student in the High School of Mathematics Varna and had just started preparation for the tough admission tests for the UWCs. For me, coming to the United States was much more a dream than a distinct possibility.
UWC-USA was a place that destroyed my boundaries about what is possible and impossible. The school is a unique example of how all cultures can
get through their differences and unite around their similarities. The environment broadened my horizons and taught me to look for the different angles of every issue. Most of all, UWC-USA left me with life-long friendships and a feeling that wherever I go, I can feel at home.
I feel accomplishment when I think about all the community projects like
Habitat for Humanity, the restoration of the Mission Church in Las Vegas, and even cleaning the roads in the town. These projects not only allowed me help the amazing local community, but also to learn more about it.
Now, thinking about the future, I can see the
world as a stream of infinite opportunities. While I initially arrived at UWC-USA with strong quantitative skills, it was here that I learned how to channel them to achieve measurable results. Through my UWC life and conversations with my peers I have realized the pervasive power of economic
policy and its ability to improve people’s lives, which has led to my dedication in pursuing a career in economics.
I dream that someday UWC will not to be a few small places where people from different countries and cultures find the united spirit, but that there will be only few small places where this UWC experience is not happening.
Todor is now a freshman at Dartmouth College.
“UWC-USA was a place that destroyed my boundaries about what is possible and impossible.”
TODOR PARUSHEV ’10
DAVIS INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARS
Every year, each UWC is asked to nominate two students, proven leaders of high character, to be honored as Davis International Scholars. This designation recognizes high achievers in each UWC and celebrates the transformational philanthropy of Shelby Davis and his family to the UWC Movement. UWC-USA’s nominees for 2009-2010 were Todor Parushev from Bulgaria and Tanyaradzwa Tawengwa from Zimbabwe.
R E P O R T O F T H E P R E S I D E N T / 2 0 1 0 5
I come from Zimbabwe and am the youngest of seven brothers and sisters. My father is a businessman
and my mother has the best job in the world—she raises her children. It goes without saying that my family was supportive and proud of my two years at UWC-USA.
My interests vary; I am passionate about music, extremely involved in women’s rights and gender issues, and I am inspired to change the beautiful continent of Africa. Coming to the USA has been an eye opener for me in terms of appreciating the beauty of the motherland and at the same time acknowledging that we still have a lot of ground to cover, namely in the areas of fair and democratic rule, women’s rights, and education.
Attending UWC-USA opened many doors for me to take the first steps to achieving my goals. At the beginning of 2010 I was a member of the New Mexico All-State Chorus. This experience allowed me to grow as a musician as well as interact with other young, talented people with similar aspirations.
Later in the year I was introduced to the work of Eve Ensler, a world-renowned playwright known for The Vagina Monologues. Two of Ensler’s colleagues visited the UWC-USA campus in search of a cast of girls who would take part in Eve’s newest production I Am an Emotional Creature: the Secret Life of Teenage Girls around the World. As I am deeply interested in women’s
rights and the empowerment of girls, I auditioned for this production at the Lensic Theater in Santa Fe. Eve Ensler
invited me to take part at a fundraising Hollywood luncheon in Beverly Hills. I performed my monologue in front of highly respected Hollywood names such as Jane Fonda, Charlize Theron, Rosario Dawson, Gabourey Sidibe and the first-lady of California,
Maria Shriver. The next day I performed my monologue at the TED conference, where I was in the same session as Sarah Silverman, Natalie Merchant, and Bill Gates.
My experience with the work of Eve Ensler was motivational and inspirational for me as a Zimbabwean woman. Zimbabwe is desperately lacking in women’s rights and gender equality. There are numerous problems that have to be addressed that are politically and culturally rooted, and I feel, after my experiences with Eve Ensler, that I am ready to take them on.
My dream, like any other person who has been touched by the UWC movement, is to improve this world that we live in. I hope to make a mark on the face of this planet that is inerasable—like footprints on the moon.
Tanya has matriculated to Princeton University.

THE MOUNTBATTEN SOCIETYRecognizing donors of $25,000 or more during the 2010 fiscal year.
The Mountbatten Society is named for Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma. Mountbatten was a British Admiral and statesman and the uncle of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He was the last Viceroy of the British Indian Empire (1947) and the first Governor-General of independent India (1947-1948).
From 1967 until 1978, Lord Mountbatten served as the first president of UWC International. He supported UWC and encouraged heads of state, politicians, and prominent individuals throughout the world to share his interest. Under Mountbatten’s presidency and personal involvement, the UWC of South East Asia was established in Singapore in 1971, followed by the UWC of the Pacific (now known as Pearson College) in Victoria, Canada in 1974. In 1978, Mountbatten passed the Presidency of UWC to his great-nephew, HRH The Prince of Wales.

Philanthropic Support of UWC-USA by Class
We are enormously proud of our
graduates and current students who gave
back to UWC-USA during our 2010 fiscal
year. Their support, highlighted here, allows
us to continue offering the programs and
the experiences that are so important.
We also thank the many others who
assist the school, especially our Alumni
Council, Annual Fund volunteers, selection
volunteers, wilderness volunteers, event
organizers and hosts, and many others
who give of their time and expertise to
enrich UWC-USA.
Every effort is made here to present
a complete and accurate list of donors.
For any oversights or errors, we apologize
and invite corrections to be sent to the
Development Office. This list reflects
gifts received between June 1, 2009 and
May 31, 2010.

CURRENT STUDENTS
CLASS OF 2011 Joseph Maciunas ’11
Sebastien de Halleux ’96,
social-gaming entrepreneur,
COO, and co-founder of
Playfish, has made a gift which
will create a fully-endowed
scholarship at UWC-USA.
De Halleux’s gift will be
matched by UWC Patron
Shelby Davis under the terms
of the Davis Endowment
Challenge and will enable an
additional Belgian student
to study at UWC-USA in
perpetuity. Originally from
Belgium, de Halleux has strong loyalties to both his UWC
school and his UWC national committee and saw this gift
as a way to support both.
De Halleux met his business partner Kristian
Segerstråle ’96, originally from Finland, while they were both
students at UWC-USA. They went on to become pioneers
in the social gaming field, founding Glu Mobile, a company
creating games for mobile phones, and then Playfish, now
the world’s second largest a social-gaming company, which
found its first large successes on Facebook with Who Has
the Biggest Brain?, Pet Society, and Geo Challenge.
“I have always believed in the power of education to
help shape a better world and in that respect the UWC
experience was a uniquely transformational one. So today
I am thrilled to be able to help make it available to current
and future generations of Belgian students. I also hope to
encourage other UWC alumni to contribute what they can
to keep the UWC movement strong,” said de Halleux.
The story of these two alumni, meeting as students
and taking their dreams forward, is inspiring to many in
the UWC community—and de Halleux’s decision to
so generously support the UWC movement is also an
inspiration and wonderful example to others.
Earlier in the school year, Bertrand Kan ’84, a member
of the first graduating class of UWC-USA and now a
trustee, became the first graduate of the school to commit
to creating fully-endowed scholarship fund, and Sebastien
de Halleux is adding to the momentum of alumni giving
back to UWC.
“These trailblazing gifts are leading the way for our
graduates to help provide new, and future, generations
with the extraordinary benefits of a UWC education,” said
Lisa Darling, President of UWC-USA.

TO UWC-USA, WITH LOVE
One of the most crucial elements of a UWC is the hectic two-year cycle. It is long enough to turn your world upside down, yet short enough to make you wonder what one more year would be like. As the cycle continues, you soon feel “forgotten.” Your zero-years might hear some vague stories about you, but after that it’s just another graduation picture up on the wall.
Near the end of the school year the class of 2010 gathered one last time for a class meeting, something our class did frequently throughout our two years together.
During our last meeting, we discussed how to say goodbye, as a class, to UWC-USA. As many graduates might know, at UWC it is quite hard to get everybody together, and to agree on something. Yet, this time, there wasn’t much to discuss. Many ideas were proposed, but a 100 percent donation seemed to be perfect. It would be straightforward, helpful, the first-of-its-kind, and united. Within a few nights, everybody had made his or her donation, which varied from fifty cents to fifty dollars.
The gift is one of the ways in which the class of 2010 wanted to show their appreciation to the school. It is also meant to be an encouragement to alumni and future graduates to continue supporting UWC-USA, whether it’s monetarily or otherwise. But most importantly, as the gift portrays unified support, I believe this gift is a perfect gesture for the class of 2010.
So yes, we leave behind yet another graduation picture up on the wall. However, we also leave behind a donation that will support the school a little where needed and an image of a cohesive class. There is no need for me to say what I hope our class will achieve or do in the future, because I believe it will be greater than I could ever hope for.
Until we reunite,
