Celebrating
theReport of the President 2009 – 2010
Gonzaga University
“The President shall, at the end of each academic year, make a report on the affairs of the University…” – Bylaws of the Corporation, Art. V, Sec. 2
TRUSTEES OF THE UNIVERSITY:
The America of 1887, when Gonzaga College fi rst admitted
students, was far different from the nation in which we now live.
The president was Grover Cleveland; Congress was concerned
with monopolistic practices of the railroad; Georgia O’Keefe,
famous painter of the American West, was born that year; and the
mass-produced automobile was still a decade away. Yet across
the years and successive historical events, each generation of
Gonzaga students, from that fi rst class on, has shared formative
relationships with people of real signifi cance. Be they Jesuits,
lay faculty and staff, or fellow students – the people and their
relationships defi ned and continue to create what we know as
the distinctive Gonzaga Experience.
During what is the most serious economic recession since the
Great Depression – a time of considerable challenges for many
institutions of higher education – it is my privilege to report
that Gonzaga University continues to thrive and make progress
towards fulfi lling its Jesuit, Catholic mission through the
excellence of its many academic and operational endeavors.
This report is meant to acknowledge the many individuals who
– both individually and collectively – continue to carry out the
mission of Gonzaga and make the success of our University a daily
reality. While we have much that challenges us, and there is much
to do, we have much to celebrate through the lives of the many
dedicated Jesuit and lay faculty and staff who daily labor to make
us who we are.
THE HEART OF GONZAGA — Informed by the Jesuit charism, our
mission is higher education: in service to the world, the Society
of Jesus, and to the universal church of which we are a part. This
educational mission is made manifest by our faculty who facilitate
discovery, learning, and refl ection by their students and help
them to acquire the skills, perspectives, and habits of mind that
will enable them to navigate the challenges of professional and
personal endeavor.

This year, our faculty collectively taught a total of 4,369 courses
across the summer 2009, fall 2009 and spring 2010 semesters.
TABLE: Courses by Level, Within School, by Academic Term, 2009-10
OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES — Transitions abounded in
the academic year 2009-10. On July 16, 2009, the University under-
went transitions to an interim president, an acting academic vice
president and an interim vice president for mission. Because the
individuals moving into these roles were not strangers to the
University, the transitions were relatively smooth and positive.
As of spring 2010 census, 7,567 students were enrolled. Of these,
4,570 were undergraduates, 2,321 were graduates, 107 were
doctoral students, 516 were studying for the law degree, and 53
were otherwise classifi ed.
The instability of the fi nancial markets in 2008 and 2009 raised
appropriate concerns about the future, given the University’s
dependence on tuition revenues. Affi rming the University’s
fundamental commitment to supporting students, the Board

of Trustees approved the administration’s proposed $4 million
increase in student fi nancial aid, while vice presidents and deans
simultaneously identifi ed 5 percent of the University’s operating
expenses for conservation – without compromising Gonzaga’s
commitment to academic quality. The result was a record 1,239
fi rst-year students, strong returning-student retention, and the
third successive year with over 80 percent of those entering as
fi rst-year students ultimately graduating.
As fall 2009 began, Gonzaga almost immediately found itself
dealing with the H1N1 virus, and an unexpected major project of
the fall involved managing this outbreak by inoculating and caring
for affected students, faculty and staff. On a positive note – and
in advance of the anticipated outbreak – considerable resources
of the University were directed towards developing business
continuity protocols, which included the creation of on-line/web-
based instances of every University course. In total 2,083 doses of
H1N1 vaccine were administered by the on-campus Health Center,
and dedicated faculty members created ingenious methods for
catching students up on missed coursework.
ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS — These challenges notwithstanding,
the 2009-10 academic year was a year of commemorations and
many wonderful achievements. We as a community witnessed
the dedication of Coughlin Residence Hall and completion of the
fi rst phase of the Magnuson Theatre renovation. The University’s
faculty, particularly in the College of Arts and Sciences, continued
to attract signifi cant grants from a variety of government and
private sources, including the National Science Foundation, the
Environmental Protection Agency, the Howard Hughes Medical
Institutes and the Department of Defense. Gonzaga hosted college
students and faculty from across the Pacifi c Northwest at the
annual Murdock Science Research Program conference and at
other intercollegiate research conferences throughout the year.
Twenty six freshmen entered the School of Business
Administration’s Hogan Program in Entrepreneurship in fall
2009, with an average SAT of 1320 and high school GPA of 3.84.
Credit generation at the graduate level was up 18 percent over
the prior fall, with the M.B.A. ultimately ranked 58th in the
nation by U.S. News and World Report. As it does every year, the
School hosted multiple speakers and events to benefi t student
scholarships, as well as career fairs and career-related activities.
During challenging times for primary and secondary education
across the nation, Gonzaga’s School of Education continues to
achieve and inspire. The School’s plan for teacher education was
reviewed by the state with exemplary evaluative comments. In
Canada, the Alberta Ministry of Education granted fi ve years’
approval to the School’s graduate programs in counseling, as well
as teacher leadership and administration. Faculty and students
from the School of Education planned and participated in a
summer 2010 immersion at the Charles Lwanga Teacher’s College
in Monze, Zambia, while back in Spokane, the School won a grant
from Priority Spokane and the Gates Foundation to explore drop-
out prevention in high-schoolers.
Inspired by its 75th anniversary, the School of Engineering and
Applied Science continued a strong history of grant proposal
submissions, grew its electrical transmission and distribution
program, supported active engagement on the part of students
with its Design Advisory Board, and completed successfully the
two-year effort of engineering (ABET) accreditation for all four
programs submitted for review.
The School of Law enrolled 186 new fi rst-year students amidst
recognition as one of the top 30 percent of law schools in the
nation by U.S. News and World Report. Its student population
continues to gain in academic preparedness as well as ethnic
diversity, and a new partnership with the Southwest University
of Political Science and Law in Chongqing, China, has brought
fi ve visiting students to Gonzaga. The award-winning Law Clinic
enjoyed a signifi cant civil rights victory in the U.S. 9th Circuit
Court of Appeals.

Signifi cant growth over the past fi ve years has concentrated 64
percent of all our graduate students in the School of Professional
Studies’ on-line degree programs. The School’s nursing programs
underwent successful re-accreditation by the Commission on
Collegiate Nursing Education in October 2009. Towards the end
of the year, Dr. Mary McFarland stepped down from her 13-year
deanship to become director of the Jesuit Commons: Higher
Education at the Margins project of Jesuit Refugee Services.
Key to the success of all our programs, the Foley Library
faculty and staff continue to support the scholarly endeavors
of tremendous numbers of students both on-campus and
“on-line,” as well as the many faculty and members of the public
who seek services. The year’s success included several featured
exhibits, including 14th century manuscripts found in our Rare
Books collection.
Our colleagues in International Student Programs continued
to bring signifi cant numbers of students from around the world
to participate in language education. This year, the M.A.-T.E.S.L.
faculty launched the new Peace Corps International dimension
of its decade-long program.
The University’s Study Abroad programs support student learning
in an increasing number of locations around the globe; seven
faculty-led summer experiences (Ecuador/Galapagos; Zambia;
Benin; Great Britain; Italy; and Poland) were facilitated in summer
2009. In the fall, Gonzaga-in-Florence welcomed 158 students
and, later, hosted a major biochemistry conference; the Florence
Christmas Tour took students to Scandinavia. Spring semester saw
the successful commencement of Florence’s fi rst-ever engineering
track. Gonzaga students continue to pursue semester abroad
study in Paris, Australia, Japan, Spain, the Netherlands, Costa Rica,
British West Indies, Mexico, China, London, Ireland, Granada and El
Salvador, among others.
STUDENT LIFE — The division of Student Life spent time during
the year refi ning, redefi ning or developing budget, reporting,
incident response, strategic planning and fi ne-tuning its response
to a changing student profi le. While the increased student
population posed challenges, all areas of the division performed
well in carrying their aspects of the University’s mission. Gonzaga
students continue to become increasingly involved in all aspects
of campus life, taking full advantage of the many opportunities
available to them, from intramurals to career fairs to involvement
with the Spokane community.
ATHLETICS — Summer camps make athletics a year-round
endeavor. Gonzaga hosted 5,295 campers across seven sports
A critical two-year recertifi cation of Athletics by the NCAA was
successfully concluded, with the self-study noted as one of
the best received by the organization this year. The continued
success and rising popularity of women’s basketball resulted in a
record 2,937 average per-game attendance; the basketball season
culminated with the women advancing to a historic NCAA third
round in Sacramento and the men to the NCAA second round in
Syracuse, making our program one of only 10 in the nation with
both men’s and women’s basketball advancing that far.
Academic performance for student athletes remains a signifi cant
institutional focus, with an average GPA for fall across all sports at
3.18, and for spring at 3.26. During 2009-10 the Athletic Department
implemented a new Champs/Life Skills Program, which engages
student-athletes in various leadership, career planning, diversity
and alcohol awareness issues. Gonzaga athletes again contributed
hundreds of hours in community service, perpetuating the very
positive reputation that attaches to Gonzaga athletics.
UNIVERSITY RELATIONS: ALUMNI RELATIONS, FUNDRAISING, AND
MARKETING/COMMUNICATIONS — 2009-10 was an outstanding
year for us in alumni relations, fundraising, and marketing
and communications. University Relations restructured its
organization in anticipation of the upcoming 125th anniversary
celebration (2012) and our accompanying fundraising efforts.
The Alumni Chapter program is growing by leaps and bounds, with
23 formal chapters and 8,597 active alumni members meeting in
organized service activities around the country. New chapters
were launched in Hawaii and Chicago, and the fi rst ever Annual
National Alumni Service Project was held in New Orleans.
We had a record number of individual donors (12,713) and gifts
($14 million, compared with $13.1 million the year before). The
development team secured $7.7 million in new pledges, compared
with $6.0 million the year prior. The Annual Campaign’s focus on
the importance and need for scholarship resulted in a strong
fundraising year: $1.35 million raised, a 6.5 percent increase over
the prior year.
We placed increased focus on local community relations with a
highly successful community impact brochure, a new website
dedicated to Gonzaga’s impact on the Spokane community and
region, and greater exposure at civic events.

FORWARD THINKING — We fi nd ourselves in a place of great
promise and potential. Continued excellence, stable enrollments,
a new academic vice president, the opportunity to become more
effective and effi cient through the work of our new executive vice
president, sustained support from our alumni community and
many benefactors – all of these factors support the development
of a vision for how this important apostolate of the Society of
Jesus, Gonzaga University, can best fulfi ll its mission in the
new millennium.
Our challenges will involve affi rming of our most valuable
traditions even as we imagine the undefi ned space in which our
current and future students will be called to make signifi cant
contributions to the world. We must complete the development
of an integrated, contemporary, and intellectually rigorous core
curriculum – that great hallmark of Jesuit education – while we
simultaneously explore new frontiers in energy distribution,
storage and management; environmental sustainability; working
collaboratively to address the contemporary needs of our Native
American tribal neighbors, as well as the current and future
desires of our regional Hispanic and Latino Americano sisters and
brothers. We fi nd ourselves at a time when our society and our
Church need us more than ever, not only as a signifi cant part of its
fold, but as an intellectual force to wrestle with important issues
of our time.
Securing the mission of Gonzaga University into the future will
require continued support from our Jesuit Community, faculty,
staff, alumni, parents, benefactors and friends. Yet even as
we discern our future – together – we remain a community
fundamentally rooted in the primary purpose for which the Jesuits
came and founded Gonzaga: to educate, with rigor and heart, so
that the world will be renewed by the creative, intelligent, faith-
fi lled people we teach, who in turn seek to nurture, serve, lead and
bring justice to all God’s people, wherever they may be. It is
a privilege to be part of this endeavor!
Ad majorem Dei gloriam – for the greater glory of God.

JESUIT IDEALS
“Father Bob Lyons is my
favorite Jesuit, a valued
mentor and a dear friend.
He’s also the person
behind Gonzaga’s
thriving Broadcast
Studies Program. He cares
deeply about sharing the
power of communication
with our undergraduates.
He is one of the most
Jesuit men I’ve met in
his care of the other,
whether a member of his
faculty team or a student
in need of guidance. His
accomplishments are
signifi cant, but in some
regards hidden. Not many
people know, for instance,
that he is the one who got
our FM radio station up to
5,000 watts, spreading its
infl uence from Oregon
to Montana.”
– Dan Garrity, senior
lecturer, broadcast
studies
“In 2001, I helped Brooke
Sullivan coordinate the
National Jesuit Student
Leadership Conference
at Gonzaga. We were
just sophomores, but
the conference came off
without a hitch. In 2008,
Brooke and I agreed to co-
coordinate the fi rst-ever
National Service Project
for Gonzaga alumni,
family and friends. With
Brooke as “coordination
and planning czar,” I
knew the project would
succeed. A year later,
over 20 participants
gave blood, sweat and
tears to help bring one
of America’s hardest hit
cities back to life. Once
again, Brooke worked
day and night, upholding
Gonzaga’s tradition of
service.”
– Brady Strahl (’03)
“Father Bill Ryan is a
teacher who loves his
students and in turn is
adored by them. Few
teachers are as likely
to be discussed as fondly
at GU reunions or as
insistently sought out
by returning graduates
for a cup of coffee or a
walk around the campus.
And Fr. Ryan remembers
and loves them all. He is
a wonderful philosophy
professor and a model
of the beautiful
relationships that may
develop between teacher
and student. Fr. Ryan
has been an expert
resource on this campus
for understanding
contemporary French
and German philosophy
for many years.”

For years, students have
told me about their
experiences in Rose Mary
Volbrecht’s classes with
a mixture of respect
and awe. They say that
Rose Mary is able to
communicate complex
ideas about important
matters in a manner that
is deeply challenging
and engaging. It is not an
exaggeration to say that
she changes students’
lives. She gives them
opportunities to think
about profound decisions
and basic values in the
context of rigorous
reading and discussion.
She models a profound
and sincere respect
for variety of opinion,
and for the power of
thoughtful conversation
to open minds to new
perspectives.
– Jane Rinehart,
professor of sociology
“For over a decade
professor and Christian
ethicist Ron Large
has been the go-to
guy for colleagues in
the Religious Studies
Department, having
served two terms as
chair and known by all
as the resident expert
on all matters related to
registration, advising,
computers, copiers
and online teaching.
Ron is a gifted teacher
and scholar of ethics
and nonviolence who
brings a library of
cultural resources to
his immensely popular
course on the Vietnam
War. A Fulbright scholar,
a passionate pacifi st and
a generous volunteer,
Ron Large now also
serves as associate dean
in the College of Arts &
Sciences.”

“Students call Jewel
Gurule ‘Mama Jewel.’
That alone is an indicator
of her infl uence on our
students. She mentors
them, assists them in
completing their projects
or in fi guring out how the
University works, and is
not afraid to scold them
when their language
exceeds acceptable
standards. She is uncanny
in her ability to sense
when students need an
ear, or a shoulder. She
is also an ever-present
support for our students
of color. She’s a gem.”

FACULTY AND STAFF
[facts] Gonzaga’s freshman-sophomore retention rate is 92 percent; its six-year graduation rate is 81 percent.
Gonzaga received grants this year of nearly $1.8 million to support diverse, rigorous and transformational
student learning.
Gonzaga welcomed alumna, scholar and administrator Dr. Patricia O’Connell Killen as academic vice president.
Her leadership is expected to foster new levels of academic excellence.
Gonzaga has undergone 10 years of enrollment growth. However, its 10-to-1 student-faculty ratio helps to maintain a University hallmark: strong, personal relationships between students and their professors.
Above, Associate Professor Anjali Barretto works with sophomore Douglas Starkebaum.
The community that is Gonzaga is renowned. This remained true in fall 2009 when the University welcomed its largest fresh-man class ever – a class already known for its enthusiasm and tight knit spirit.
[fact] Gonzaga alumni, parents and friends stepped up with extra gifts to help meet the cost of $3 million in financial aid
made available to the 2009 freshmen due to difficult economic conditions.
ALUMNI, PARENTS
AND FRIENDS
Above, the Zags cheered the women’s basketball team into its first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance.
“When I met with Amy
to talk about Chapters,
she had so many ideas.
She said, ‘I love Gonzaga,
I would do anything for
Gonzaga. But there’s
something missing in
the Chapters. There’s
nothing that is kid
friendly.’ After that, Amy
pretty much started
the Little Zag Program,
which has brought so
much satisfaction to so
many alumnae. She isn’t
afraid to work to make
things happen. To meet
her or to talk with her on
the phone, you just feel
better about your day.
She has been a ray
of light.”
– Kara Hertz, associate
alumni director
“The fact that my mom,
Cindy Kosciesza, can
run a household and
the family business
while my dad is working
overseas is a testament
of her strength. That she
can support me in every
way in my educational
journey is a testament
of her love. That she still
has the strength and
love to then give back
to the University that is
changing both our lives
is a testament to her
unending belief and faith
in Gonzaga’s mission.
She truly exemplifi es
the Jesuit lifestyle in
everything she does, and
for that I respect, admire
and love her.”
– Brian Kosciesza (’13)
To promote Gonzaga’s
Zags-in-Zambia programs,
John Rudolf climbed
Mount Everest, reaching
Camp II before illness
ended his summit
attempt. “John nurtures
life in others through his
passion for the possible.
His energy is the radical
grace that fuels his
passion, and believe
me, it is contagious! Our
university community is
truly blessed to have
John so in love with
being a Zag.”

“When I approached
Suzanne Ostersmith, the
Dance for PD™ program,
offered by the Parkinson’s
Resource Center of
Spokane, needed a home.
Suzanne is a woman of
refreshing openness and
passion, who immediately
began looking for ways to
help make the program
even better. Suzanne
convinced GU to rent its
new dance studio at a
reduced fee, and when
I told her that I was
searching for a pianist,
she arranged for world-
class pianist Greg Presley
to provide music – and
arranged to have a piano
donated, too.”

“David Whitehead
organized the Food for
Thought community
dinners, which brought
together the homeless
and members of the
Spokane community to
learn about each other
through a meal and
conversation. Those
events were a great
addition to Spokane,
not just Gonzaga.
Last fall David and I
attended a conference
in Chicago for college
students interested
in fi ghting hunger
and homelessness.
We had some great
conversations on hunger
and homelessness, which
was the subject of his
honors thesis. David was
betrothed to his high
school sweetheart this
summer and is now in
Chicago with Teach for
America.”
– Todd Dunfi eld, CCASL

“Neice Schafer has served
others in many ways
since her days as a GU
student, but her role in
starting and sustaining
Reach for the Future
embodies the Jesuit
ideal of service: Neice
and a group of friends
committed to pay for

second-graders. Using
skills gained from years
of coaching sports and
working in business,
Neice collaborates with
community partners,
writes grants and

She believes that each

tirelessly gives her time,
talents and enthusiasm
to help this dream

[fact] Gonzaga students supported the community of Spokane with nearly 100,000 hours of service in 2009-10.
Gonzaga’s School of Education completed a research study on high school dropout interventions funded by Priority Spokane, a community coalition that has identified this issue as a major Spokane concern.
