From our school, neighbourhood and city, we have taken several measures that contribute to alleviate these effects

HIGH SCHOOLObjectives:

MEASURES TAKEN:

✓ Traditional lighting system has been replaced by a LED bulb system

✓ Double windows have been installed to retainwarmth✓ Computer classrooms have now a more

extended use✓ Selective collection: paper, plastic, technological

garbage.✓ Campaigns on responsible consumption

MEASURES TAKEN:

✓ Easy tips to promote selective collection at home✓ Recycling organic waste:

✓ Two composting bins looked after by a Fertilise Master: house waste reduced by half

✓ Fertilizer is then used in the urban vegetable patches

(looked after by children during the school year, by the elderly on holidays).

✓ Promoting the use of safe school paths by volunteers

PONTEVEDRA: A ROLE

MODEL CITY

The urban remodelling of

Pontevedra started in 1999.

It focuses on a city concept where the human being and their activities are vital in urban life

Pontevedra has been internationally awarded with several prizes dealing with sustainable development.The measures taken show an eco-friendly city. Pontevedra is a role model city with more public spaces, social cohesion, economic activity, respect for and recovery of the environment and accessibility

PONTEVEDRA

Results : more pedestrian areas, free

car park lots in the outskirts and maximum

speed 30 km/h.

➢ Road traffic diminished by 30 % in the city area and by 70 % in the city centre. 72 % of people walk or ride a bike.

➢ CO2 emissions decreased by 66 % in the city area and by 88 % in the city centre.

➢ Low environmental noise.

➢ Remarkable recovery of biodiversity: 228 tree species and 133 bird species.

➢ The Lérez river and its riverbanks have been totally cleaned up

Human activity has a negative impact on the planet’s life. However, these effects could be balanced if we took some measures in our school, our community, and our city that led us to a sustainable development.
