RELIGIOUS EDUCATION – TASTER SESSION
WHAT IS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION?
Look at the statements below. Which statement do you agree with the most?
You will revisit the statements above at the end of the session. For this taster session we
will be focussing on the theme of EQUALITY. The following tasks will help you experience
what RE is like at Eastbury Community School.
TASK 1: Look at the image and answer the 5W’s!
What is happening in the image?
Why is this happening?
Where do you think this image was taken?
When do you think this image was taken?
Who is in the image?
CHALLENGE: How does this link to Religious Education?
RE is all about learning about
different religions and how they
worship
RE explores the big questions that
are difficult to answer. For
example, ‘does God really exist?’
RE is about exploring different issues in
society and understanding how a
particular religion might respond to it.
RE is about learning and understanding the opinions of others, and being able to
explore and argue your own viewpoint on issues that exist in our world today.
RE doesn’t just focus on religion, but also looks at non-religious
views on certain issues.
TASK 2: Complete the word search below. Have you come across these key terms before? How might they link to the picture in Task 1?
Find out the definitions to these keywords and draw a symbol to represent each word
TASK 3: Read through the religious quotes below. What keywords from Task
2 can you link to each quote and how (explain the connection)?
KEY WORDS
EQUALITY
RELIGION
PREJUDICE
LOVE GOD
THE GOLDEN RULE
JUSTICE
PROTEST
PEACE
COMMUNITY
TASK 4: Create a ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ tally for each statement as shown below. Ask
people about their views on each statement and record it on your tally. You
can ask your family or call your friends – Try and ask as many people as you
can!
‘Racism will never end’
Yes No
‘Society is becoming more accepting’
Yes No
‘If everyone followed a religion, there
would be no injustice in the world’
Yes No
‘Religion creates inequality’
Yes No
Look at your results – Think about the reason behind the outcome of your results for each
statement. What would you agree/disagree with and why?
TASK 5: Pick ONE of the following tasks to complete. Whichever task you
pick, you must include a religious teaching in it
Create a poster about why equality is important in religion and society.
Create a protest sign for a campaign that you care about e.g Womens Rights, Black
Lives Matter, LGBTQ Rights. Use colour, images, a powerful quote etc.
Create a role play demonstrating the theme of equality. You could do this with
someone at home and record yourself. Some suggestions – An advertisement about
a campaign you care about, a segment on a children’s show teaching them about
equality, a news report about a social issue etc.
Create a 3 minute spoken word piece about the importance of equality and justice in
society. Use the key terms and religious views from the session. Here is a video on
YouTube for some inspiration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwxjXRZYJcY
REFLECTION
Lets revisit the statements from the beginning of the session. Which
statement did you agree with the most? Have your views changed?
The truth is, we explore ALL of these things in RE and much more!
EXTRA ACTIVITY TO TAKE AWAY
In RE we study topics that look at moral responsibilities of individuals and society, and
religious teachings on how people should conduct themselves. Equality and justice have
always been encouraged in many different religions, and very recently have become a
huge focus in society. You can do your part by following this ‘Action Calendar’ during the
month of July and see if you can complete each action for each day.
