A Note from a Cancer Advocate Volunteer:

Dear Wexford County and surrounding areas,

I write to you today as a cancer survivor, a cancer caregiver and as a cancer advocate for Relay for Life. I have been a cancer survivor since 1993, a Relayer since 2003, and an advocate since 2008. My life has changed because of Relay for Life and I have seen so many other lives touched as well. I dont believe that I would still be here if it wasnt for the funding for research from the American Cancer Society. I remember my first Relay: taking the track for my first survivor lap, the tears of joy that spilled from my eyes to see so many other survivors and to see a multitude of care givers, friends, family, and strangers encourage us.

This battle is a BIG battle but we are strong in numbers. For the load may heavy but with the hands of many it becomes lighter. THANK YOU to all who help fight this battle !!

Please join us on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cadillac to Celebrate the lives of survivors and what theyve overcome, to Remember loved ones lost to this disease and honor those who have fought or are fighting cancer, and to Fight Back against this disease that has taken way too much from our lives. If you are unable to attend but would like to help in the fight against cancer Please feel free to contact me @ karen.wexfordrelay @ yahoo.com or contact Stacia Thompson - American Cancer Society Community Representative Lakeshore Division 129 Jefferson SE Grand Rapids, MI 49503 616-364-6121 Mobile 231-866-0292 cancer.org 1-800-227-2345

ResearchFor more than 65 years, the American Cancer Society

has been finding answers that save lives - from changes in lifestyle to new approaches in therapies to improving cancer patients quality of life. No single nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization in the US has invested more dollars than the American Cancer society and Relay For Life, to find the causes and cures of cancer. Much of our research dollars stay in the State of Michigan and are sent to Michigan State University, University of Michigan, and University of Detroit.

What is the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN)?ACS CAN is the nations leading cancer advocacy organization that is working every day to make cancer issues a national priority.

Many of the most important decisions about cancer are made outside of your doctors office. Instead, they are made by your state legislature, in Congress and in the White House. ACS CAN empowers regular people to be part of the growing national movement that is fighting back against cancer.

ACS CAN, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, is holding lawmakers accountable for their words and their actions. We demand that our leaders not only talk about fighting cancer but take real steps toward decreasing the number of people suffering and dying from cancer.

    ACS CAN Volunteers are Winning

Today, over 70% of all Americans live in a smoke-free community.

But millions are still forced to work in smoke-filled workplaces.

Today, advances in cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and care mean that we are winning the war on cancer.

But Congress has frozen or cut funding for cancer research and programs for the past five years.

Today, women have better access to mammograms.

But millions of women, men and children are uninsured and millions more are underinsured, with little or no access to life-saving screenings and treatments.

ACS CAN campaigns led by volunteers and staff across the nation have:

Led to 35 states as well as Washington, DC and Puerto Rico to go smoke-free

Supported a 62-cent increase in the federal cigarette tax, preventing 1.9 million children from becoming lifelong tobacco users

Helped secure U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulation of tobacco products

Increased federal cancer research funding for the National Institutes of Health

ACS CAN Is Winning the War on CancerACS CAN will defeat cancer by: Funding aggressive grassroots, lobbying and media

campaigns to make every state smoke-free and to increase tobacco taxes and funding for cancer research. We advocate for early detection programs such as mammograms and colon cancer screenings

Educating the public and media directly by supporting sophisticated training programs for volunteers to strengthen our movement and ensure that our voices are truly heard in

    the halls of government;

Hosting debates and producing voter guides, candidate forums, and advertising to get every lawmaker and candidate on the record in support of laws and policies that help people fight cancer and save lives.

These efforts produce policies, laws, and regulations that further the overall mission of both the American Cancer Society and ACS CAN.Why did the American Cancer Society form ACS CAN?Previously, the American Cancer Society had one hand tied behind its back in the advocacy arena. By becoming a member of ACS CAN, advocates can use both hands to fight back against cancer.

ACS CAN allows for increased lobbying of local, state and federal officials.

ACS CAN allows cancer advocates to hold lawmakers accountable for their votes and actions through voter guides and town hall meetings.

ACS CAN provides legal protection to the Society. By forming ACS CAN, the Society is able to encourage additional advocacy efforts without jeopardizing its tax-deductible status.

When the sun goes down, hundreds sometimes thousands of luminaria light the way under the stars and a moment of silence falls during a moving ceremony of remembrance. Luminaria are glowing bags that appear to be just paper sacks filled with canned goods and candles, but every bag represents a life that has battled cancer. The luminaria ceremony is one of the most emotional moments as Relay. It is a time to remember those lost to cancer, support those fighting cancer and rejoice with those who have fought and won. Please join us at 10pm for this ceremony. Luminaria will be available during the relay at the registration table.

Light the way to a cure!

The luminaries are held down with can goods that are then donated to feeding america and are distributed to our local food pantries. Last year we donated over 1000 pounds.
