These decorated and painted chairs were part of last year’s “Chair-ity” auction at the Relay for Life of Henry County. There will be more such chairs at this year’s relay. The Henry County relay is set for June 13-14 at the Henry County Fairgrounds.

The Relay for Life of Paulding County will be held on May 30-31. A highlight of this year’s relay will be the car/motorcy-

Cancer assistance available

Every day, cancer patients need rides to treat-ment. Some may not be able to drive themselves, and family and friends cannot always help. The American Cancer Society's Road To Recovery program provides rides to patients who have no way to get to their cancer treatment. Volunteers are always needed to be drivers for patients going to treatment.

If you or someone you love gets cancer, you will have questions. The I Can Cope online classes can help you and your loved ones learn about cancer and how to take care of yourselves. The more you know about cancer, the better you can handle your treatment and decisions about your care.

Entertainment, cruise-in and food featured at Hicksville relay

HICKSVILLE — The Relay for Life of Hicksville will be held on Friday, June 20, and Saturday, June 21, at the Hicksville High School.

Carrie Bussing, one of the co-chairmen for the relay, said, “Our goal is $32,000 this year. We are having the car cruise-in again this year and we will also have motorcycles. We thought that would be more inter-esting to the visitors. We just had 15 or 20 cars last year, but it was the first year and we made some good contacts.

“We have about 11 or 12 relay teams — not all of them have registered yet,” she said. “What makes our relay special is that we have lots of live entertainment. We have bands and sing-ers. We have the Five Star Dance Studio, and they are always popular with the crowd. We will have the 5K run Saturday morning and the Hicksville school cross-country team will be participating in the race. We have lots of fun-theme laps such as the tutu lap and the glow in the dark lap.

“We also seem to have a lot of good food at our relay,” she said. “People can come and eat their Friday night supper with us.”

Activities at the Hicksville relay begin at 5:15 p.m. with survivor registration and refreshments.

The opening ceremony will take place from 6-7 p.m., followed by car and motorcycle cruise-in regis-tration at 7 p.m. The cruise-in takes place from 7-9:30 p.m.

A silent auction will keep bidders guessing from 7 p.m. until midnight.

The Five Star Dance

Studio will perform from 7-7:45 p.m.

Theme laps will feature the balloon lap from 7-8 p.m. and the tutu lap from 8-9 p.m. Guys are also invit-ed to wear a tutu!

The Emerging Worship band will play from 8-9:45 p.m., followed by the crazy hat theme lap from 9-10 p.m.

From 10-11 p.m., the Ceremony of Hope and luminary slide show will be held.

Then, it is on to anoth-er theme lap with light it up glow products, such as flashlights or blinking lights.

From 11 p.m.-1 a.m. Jerome Schooley will enter-tain relay walkers.

Next will be more theme laps with the box car lap and the three-legged lap until

2 a.m., when the country western lap will take over. It will be time for cowboy hats, boots and bandanas.

David Bussing will per-form from 2-3 a.m., fol-lowed by the colorful rain-bow lap from 3-4 a.m. There will also be an open mic for bands or individuals from 3-4 a.m.

The 1950s will hold sway on the 4-5 a.m. theme lap, with a sock hop, saddle shoes, slicked-back hair, pony tails, etc. From 5-6 a.m., there will be a holiday lap with participants dress-ing to celebrate any holiday they wish.

Yoga will wake up sleepy relay walkers from 6-7 a.m., unless the theme lap does with its emphasis on plaid (as in shirts, pants, shorts, etc.)

At 7 a.m., the “Taking

Steps to Stop Cancer” 5K run/walk registration begins.

Mardi Gras will be the theme of the lap from 7-8 a.m., with Zumba going on at the same time.

From 8-9 a.m., the theme lap will be the character lap with movie, comic strip or TV characters walking the track.

From 8-11 a.m., relay walkers and others can chow down with the relay breakfast for a freewill donation.

The 5Krun/walk will take place from 9-11 a.m.

Closing ceremonies, team awards and team totals will take place from 11:30 a.m.- noon, when the relay will end.

Unique items featured at Henry County relay auction

NAPOLEON — With a lofty goal of $216,000 this year, the members of the Relay for Life of Henry County will be working hard to achieve their goal.

Last year, according to co-chairman Tina Myers, the relay raised over $208,000.

There is now a history of competition between Henry Country and Williams County in fundraising for the relay, with both coun-ties expected to raise more than $200,000 each this year.

Myers said, “We have been No. 1 in the nation per capita for three years and we want to be No. 1 this year. Williams County is right on our tail so we have been pushing our teams all year to fund raise. They have always done that anyway.

“I guess it was word of mouth that got the compe-tition going between us,” she said. “We went to train-ing sessions with them and other counties. We all share our fundraising ideas. We encourage each other to do well.”

This year, Myers said the number of chairs in the “Chair-ity” auction will double. She is also encour-aging people to come for the auction at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night, June 13.

“We have a lot of items this year for the auction, and many of them are unique items,” she added.

The Relay for Life of

Henry County will be held on Friday, June 13, and Saturday, June 14, at the Henry County Fairgrounds in Napoleon.

Events will begin at 4:45 p.m. Friday with survivor registration. Opening cer-emonies will begin at 6 p.m. The survivor reception will be at 6:15 p.m. Also at 6:15 p.m., a team lap with mem-bers carrying team posters will take place.

Visitors will be enter-tained starting at 6:30 p.m. by a dance performance by Julie’s Dance Studio.

Following the dance per-formance will be the live auction, with many items up for grabs. At 8:30 p.m., the bidding for the chairs in the “Chair-ity” auction will end.

The first theme lap starts at 9 p.m. with Mickey and friends. At 10 p.m., the luminaria ceremony will be held.

At midnight, the theme lap will be king and queen and court, followed by a team challenge at 12:30 a.m.

Theme laps from 1-8 a.m. will include: Clue, military, football, bingo with a twist, Monopoly, Star Trek, and Power of Purple at 8 a.m.

A Zumba exercise with Sweeney Fitness, LLC, will take place at 3:30 a.m.

At 9 a.m., visitors will be able to see “Act your way to relay — team skits.”

The final awards and fight back ceremony will be at 11:15 a.m. and the event will close at noon with walking the first lap for the 2015 relay.
