Phase-Out of Methyl BromidePhase-Out of Methyl Bromide
• Under the Federal Clean Air Act and international treaty to protect ozone layer (Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer), the production and import of methyl bromide phased out in the United States on January 1, 2005
• Parties to the Montreal Protocol agreed to allow limited production and import of methyl bromide after January 1, 2005 for “critical use exemptions”

• Since 2002, Southeastern Consortia have submitted critical use exemption applications for methyl bromide for cucurbits, peppers, strawberries (fruit and nursery production) and tomatoes
• Methyl bromide allotted for the above uses during 2005, 2006, 2007 and, most recently, 2008
• Critical use exemption applications submitted for 2009; awaiting decision sometime in 2007

• The amount of methyl bromide requested by the U. S. each year (2005-2008) in CUE process is decreasing (39% to 35% to 29% to 23% of 1991 baseline)
• The amount of methyl bromide authorized by the Parties each year (2005-2008) in CUE process is decreasing (37% to 32% to 26.4% to 21% of 1991 baseline)
• The continued authorization of methyl bromide by the Parties is dependent on U. S. demonstrating progress toward development of alternatives

• The Southern Region IPM Center hosted meeting in Raleigh on December 7, 2005 and assisted with travel costs of experts to prepare research plan for identifying/developing pest management alternatives to methyl bromide for the county ham industry
• The Center also sponsored a Methyl Bromide Alternatives Workshops on Feb. 23-24, 2005 and March 21-22, 2006 in Raleigh; training for county extension agents in GA, NC, SC, TN and VA
• Attended International Research Conference on Methyl Bromide Alternatives in Orlando, Florida on November 6-9, 2006
