TUESDAYMusic Appreciation: BeethovenInstructor: Mark Pinzur, Musical Director, Moorestown Theatre CompanyBeethoven, a true child of the Enlightenment, had been thinking of setting Schiller’s “Ode to Joy” to music in his mid-twenties. As with many of his greatest works, he wrote sketches for many years trying to come up with the best possible composition. The final version is among the world’s most loved symphonies, with the words “Alle menschen werden bruder” (all men shall be brothers) as relevant and important today as they were two centuries ago.  Tuesday, February 19 • 10:30 - 11:45am

Choreographer Jerome RobbinsInstructor: Marjie Major, Dancer, ChoreographerJerome Robbins (born Jerome Wilson Rabinowitz) was an American choreographer, director, dancer, and theater producer who worked in classical ballet, on Broadway and films and television. The numerous stage productions he worked on include On the Town, Peter Pan, The King and I, The Pajama Game, West Side Story, Gypsy, and Fiddler on the Roof. Robbins was a five-time Tony Award-winner and recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors and received two Academy Awards, including the 1961 Oscar for Best Director with Robert Wise for West Side Story. Joan, a highly educated, shy and devoted wife of an acclaimed novelist, begins to question her life choices when he wins the Nobel Prize. Bagel Breakfast: Who Is The Best Dancer on Screen?Instructor: Moylan Mills, Ph.D., Faculty Penn State University There will always be comparisons between Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire, the two greatest dancers in the history of Hollywood. We have talked a lot about Fred in our classes, but we haven’t really discussed Gene. So let’s look at some of Gene’s most notable films, such as Singin in the Rain. We’ll also watch Gene dance with the magnificent Cyd Charisse and the piquant Debbie Reynolds to see if Gene can out-dance Fred. They are very different stylists when they take the floor and we’ll explore that difference as well as other aspects of Gene’s career and private life.
