If you follow one recommendation or do one exercise from this book, the most promising one comes from the sixth arena: nutrition. Eliminate gluten, the protein in wheat, barley and rye from your diet. You might be saying but I feel fine when I eat bread or pizza and that may be true of your digestive system but in some people gluten sensitivity doesn't contribute to digestive problems but rather it affects the nervous system contributing to loss of balance and ataxias.

This book is a mix of medical referenced material for those who want to see what medical science is saying about hope and the healing potential of ataxia or a loss of balance. There are also step by step self-care exercises that can change your quality of life. you may decide to skip all the explanations and just read and do the exercise component, that is perfectly fine. Each exercise and to-do-section is clearly labeled for you.

Can the brain and spinal cord regenerate after injury or disease? Twenty years ago, neurologists were saying the brain, the spinal cord can’t heal or regenerate. Today when you ask a neurologist who is reading their own medical literature the answer is “yes, under certain circumstances.” This book is about those circumstances. It is about what needs to change so that you get a difference outcome that what you have been getting.

This book is a road map for anyone who wants to develop a better functioning nervous system, whether they are under a little too much stress leading to imbalances or have been recently diagnosed with Huntington's ataxia or cerebellar ataxia or had a spinal cord injury twenty years ago. This is designed for anyone who finds themselves unsteady and falling, losing their balance, or with a serious diagnosis like Friedreich's ataxia or some other inherited balance issue. This book is designed to help you regain your balance both physical steadiness on your feet and smooth muscle movements as well as find the balance to live a more fulfilling, creative life. There are easy exercises, self-care recommendations and scientific / medical research snippets. some of the exercises are based on the concept of using the mind to heal the brain and explore the relationship between what you think and perceive and how that changes the physical substrate of the brain and nervous system.

The exercises are designed to help you if you are struggling with walking and balance, speech and articulation issues, joint pain, sensory loss, depression, nerve pain or sensory neuropathy. These exercises will also benefit you if you just want to feel and function better and find new ways to improve your nervous system as you age. This book is for you if you have been diagnosed with Cerebellar Ataxia, Huntington's Disease (a genetic movement disorder), X-linked spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (Kennedy disease), Friedreich's ataxia and mitochondrial diseases, Spinocerebellar Ataxia, Charcot-Marie Tooth, Dentatorubro-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA), Inherited prion disease, Neuroacanthocytosis, Brain iron accumulation disorders, Benign hereditary chorea, Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum, focal dystonia (unusually tight twisted muscles), Parkinson's disease (tremor movement disorder), and Wilson's disease (genetic copper processing disorder), Ataxia with isolated vitamin E deficiency (AVED), Ataxia Telangiectasia, Cayman ataxia, Ataxia with oculomotor apraxia. There is also help for you if you have Acquired Chorea due to vascular disease, post-infective autoimmune central nervous system disorders (PANDAS), drugs, systemic lupus erythematosus, antiphospholipid syndrome, thyrotoxicosis, AIDS, chorea gravidarum, and polycythaemia rubra vera. This book includes unique exercises like the fractal vision exercises, disgust exercises for better balance (using the mind to heal the brain) and homeopathic visualizations. Enriched Environments and Brain PlasticityExercise: Look around your living and working space. Is it interesting? Does it change? Are their puzzles and activities to engage and challenge your brain? Change something every day. Design your space with color, variety, and interest in mind. This is what is known as an enriched environment, as opposed to boring and monotonous.Behavioral, cellular and molecular studies have revealed significant effects of enriched environments on rodents and other species, and provided new insights into mechanisms of experience-dependent plasticity, including adult neurogenesis [brain development] and synaptic plasticity [adaptable brain connections]. The onset and progression of Huntington's disease in transgenic mice is delayed by environmental enrichment has emphasized the importance of understanding both genetic and environmental factors in nervous system disorders, including those with Mendelian inheritance patterns. A range of rodent models of other brain disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, fragile X and Down syndrome, as well as various forms of brain injury, have now been compared under enriched and standard housing conditions. - Nithianantharajah, J. and A. J. Hannan (2006). "Enriched environments, experience-dependent plasticity and disorders of the nervous system." Nat Rev Neurosci 7(9): 697-709. Recent studies have reported abnormalities in short-term plasticity in patients with Huntington's disease (HD). "Our results demonstrate impairment of both cortical and brainstem LTP-like plasticity in symptomatic HD patients which is similar to LTP deficits previously reported in HD animal models. These findings might well represent the neurophysiological correlates of memory deficits often present in HD. " - Crupi, D., M. F. Ghilardi, et al. (2008). "Cortical and brainstem LTP-like plasticity in Huntington's disease." Brain Res Bull 75(1): 107-114. In other words, brain plasticity is affected in brain disorders and there are things you can do like look at your environment that can improve brain plasticity or the ability of your brain to heal and adapt. What does the nervous system need to function and heal? The brain and spinal cord need nutrients and building blocks for the development and recovery process. The nervous system also needs space- the space within which to glide with the movements of the body and send a flow of nervous system impulses along an unfettered pathway.Nerve need a clean environment, free of toxins, waste products and excess fluid or swelling. This book is about simple, easy self-care approaches to providing the nervous system with what it needs to develop and heal. Here we will also explore different modalities from the field of Integrative Medicine or Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) that are developing more and more research and proof of benefits to the nervous system How can we communicate with our nervous system? This book will also explore ways to understand what our nervous system is saying to us and how to send messages to our conscious brain, subconscious mind and autonomic nervous system, all of which have important messages for us and are very much concerned about our health and well being. With this book you can become “The Nerve Whisperer” for your very own nervous system and support and understand those around you better as well. What is acute pain telling me?Acute pain or sudden pain is protective. The pain of stepping on a tack, tells us to lift our foot. The burning pain of touching a hot stove tells us with draw our hand. The pain ensures that we will be more careful next time. It ensures that we learn how to navigate our environment safely. There are a few people who have no pain receptors and while this sounds like a pleasant thing, they often die at a young age because their warning system is off. They don’t realize that their foot is infected or that they have a bleeding cut. They are trying to navigate the world without the benefit of a warning system. What is the benefit of chronic pain?Chronic pain - long lasting pain with no ongoing tissue damage - on the other hand is not telling us of dangerous situations where damage is currently being inflicted on the tissue. Chronic pain tells us that there is too much stress on the tissue and not enough of the things needed for nerve and tissue healing and recovery. The solution to chronic pain is finding ways to increase nutrients going to the tissues, decrease toxins in the tissues, relax muscles and improve the amount of space available to the nerve, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and muscles to do their job. Here we will discuss the evidence and reports of the benefits of nutritional programs (vitamin E, CoQ10, Vitamin B12), gluten elimination, reflexology, massage, Integrative Manual Therapy, Alexander Technique, Acupuncture, physical therapy, occupational therapy and exercise. These approaches improve quality of life and the overall symptom pictures in people with ataxia. In an extensive article on the genetics, protein folding dysfunctions, and characteristics of inherited ataxias, researchers said, “at present, limited therapeutic approaches are available for a few recessive ataxias, including vitamin E supplementation in Ataxia with isolated vitamin E deficiency (AVED) and administration of coenzyme Q derivatives for Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) cardiomyopathy. The development of biological markers that can detect the disease process before the patient becomes sick must be a research priority.”- DeKosky, S. T. and K. Marek (2003). About the Author: Kimberly Burnham

Who Do I Help? What do I do? Millions of people have lost their sensory connection with the natural world. I use my training, a PhD in Integrative Medicine and certifications in Integrative Manual Therapy, Matrix Energetics and Health Coaching to help improve the function of your nervous system.

There is healing in just noticing the branching fractal patterns in trees and other parts of the natural world. Recognizing the pattern can decrease stress and anxiety and restores balance.More than nine million Americans over the age of 40 have macular degeneration. They are losing their vision, their ability to watch transformational movies, to read inspirational books like Christine Kloser's Pebbles in the Pond and to drive safely. Their world is getting smaller.

The purpose of my chapter in Pebbles in the Pond: The Eyes Observing Your World is to demonstrate that you can improve your eyesight, vision and perspective as you get older.

In my own personal story, at 28, I was working as a professional photographer and then found myself in an ophthalmologist's office. In his white coat with his degrees hanging on the wall he told me I have keratoconus, which affects the cornea. "Kim, it is genetic so there is nothing you can do about it. You need to consider how your life will go if you become blind.“

That day guided to me into massage school, a profession where you don't need to be able to see and that lead to a PhD in Integrative Medicine focused on brain health, especially Parkinson's disease.I have found solutions for myself and today at 55 my vision is better than when I was 28. My goal is to change the face of vision disorders, genetic issues and neurodegenerative conditions. No one can tell me that complementary and alternative medicine doesn't offer solutions, strategies and hope. I know in my body and in my eyes that I can heal. I know from my clients' experiences that all of us can improve the quality of our lives after a devastating genetic diagnosis, disease process or a serious injury.

In 2012 I started training for a Cross-USA bicycle ride with Hazon, an organization which promotes sustainable agriculture and food justice. Summer 2013 I will be bicycling 3300 miles across this beautiful country. To find out more or follow my progress see my blog at http://blog.thatintersectionpoint.com and http://visualizehealth.net/SustainableAgriculture.phpI am the author of Our Fractal Nature and Journey of Self-Discovery and Connection, as well as the upcoming book, The Nerve Whisperer, Recover Your Life Through Brain Health. Featured with other thought leaders in two books, Jack Canfield's Pearls of Wisdom, 30 Inspirational Ideas to Live Your Best Life Now! (April 2, 2012) my chapter, "Fractals: Seeing the Patterns in Our Existence", offers a unique perspective on life patterns and how we can improve our brain health and memory by observing while seeking to understand the world around us."The Eyes Observing Your World", in Christine Kloser's Pebbles in the Pond: Transforming the World One Person at a Time (May 20, 2012) tells a remarkable story of vision recovery offering hope for anyone with a potentially blinding condition, migraines, or immune dysfunction.  What Do You Want? This eBook will give you effective self-care tools to help you increase your quality of life, the function of your nervous system and enjoy what you want in your life, regardless of the kind of diagnosis or label you have.People with Huntington’s disease, hereditary ataxias, Freideriech’s ataxia as well as gluten sensitivity induced ataxia have used these tools to improve their function, energy levels and movement control.I had a diagnosis of nystagmus, which is a movement disorder of the eyes, often associated with multiple sclerosis. My vision is better now at 54, than it was when I turned 40 and that despite another diagnosis, Keratoconus, which is a genetic condition affecting the cornea of the eye. I have used complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) approaches to improve my vision, eliminate a movement disorders and the migraines I had for 10 plus years as well as become symptom-free despite a genetic condition. Some people will say they don’t have enough time or money or that there is no cure and they will lose out on the success that so many people have already experienced. It is a different world today, different from a generation ago when Woody Guthrie was diagnosed with Huntington’s or Michael J Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Today there are people who are seeing improvements in their quality of life as they age, regardless of their diagnoses. Here we will review the stories and experiences of regular people with devastating diagnosis, as well as what complementary medicine practitioners are doing to help people feel better and function better. We will also most importantly teach you fast and easy things to do yourself that will have life changing effects on your quality of life. If you are like most people, what you want can be simplified into six categories: space, movement, clarity, energy, experience, freedom. Time and money, which most people would say they want fall into these six categories. Time is really the energy and clarity to gain the experience you want. Money is not the goal but rather the desire for a certain experience of life and the freedom to do what you want. Can you think of anything you want that doesn't fit into these six categories?Let me know on Facebook. There is also weekly free health coaching sessions at The Nerve Whisperer Facebook Fan page.Do you want more space? 1) You want a comfortable space. This entails having space, space to live, to sleep, to work, to enjoy, to communicate, to move. To love. It entails having a space that you feel good in. Your nervous system also wants space, space to flexibly move, space from which to get nutrients and get rid of waste products, space to function and get information. More than anything else a pinched nerve want a comfortable space. It wants the space around it to be flexible, to be light, to touch it in a healthy and adaptable way.Movement 2) You want to be able to move through time and space. Moving through time and space is important for us at a whole human being level, as well as at the level of systems in the body on down to the atomic level. Your atoms are in constant motion as long as you are alive. You are never completely still. All of that movement creates information, information about internal processes and external processes in your environment. Your nervous system uses this information to move you closer to certain things and away from other things. A breakdown in the ability to move and voluntarily control what you do and don't want to do is at the root of many nervous system disorders.Clarity 3) You want clarity, the ability to think clearly, make good choices for yourself, be productive, be creative and learn from your experiences. So many nervous system problems are a result of a lack in this area.Energy 4) Many people say I wish I had more time, but is it really time they want or the clarity to be productive in the time they have and the energy to do the things they want to do? Energy is vital to the nervous system. Nutrients and oxygen are converted into energy by the mitochondria, the little power stations in your cells. These building blocks of your structure and fuel for energy production giving your nervous system the ability to function well have to first come into your body, pass through the membranes in your lungs and digestive system, go into the blood stream, be sorted and packaged (often in the liver) and then delivered to the cells for building, healing and energy production. Each step along the way is important.Experience 5) Sometimes people say I want more money, or I need more money but really what are they looking for? You want a certain experience of life or certain sensations - a beautiful place to live, the luxury of waking up with the sun streaming in the window and being able to lay there and enjoy it, the ability to travel and see the Eiffel Tower or the Pyramids, or chose to read a book or garden or take your kids somewhere fun. Most of the time it is not really money that we want, it is what money will get us in terms of the experiences we want to have. You nervous system has no need of money but it does need resources in order to create the energy, clarity and movement to make it possible for you to accomplish your dreams. Many people also say they want love, to be loved, to be appreciated, to be recognized. These are all emotional states that we wish to experience. We want to have the experience, the feeling. We want to experience success.Freedom 6) Another thing most people want is freedom and independence. You want to have a choice and you want to be able to do what you want. Your nervous system has to have enough space, information, and energy in order to enable you to have choices and the independence you want.

Surprising Results: One Woman's Story of The Genetics of Hope and Recovery  "Sometimes I forget that I was diagnosed with Huntington‘s disease almost a year ago. Sometimes I wonder why people are talking to me as if I have a scary, life altering disease, until I remember the day in the neurologist’s office with my husband, when I got the news. The genetic neurologist, a 40 something, nice enough looking woman, painted the bleakest possible picture of my next 10-20 years. The picture of the progression of the disease I have been labeled with briefly sucked the life out of my dreams and hopes. She spoke to me as if recovery of quality of life after a diagnosis of Huntington’s disease is impossible. She spoke the curses as if there is no possibility that tomorrow, someone might find a cure and brighten the outlook for the more than a quarter of a million people worldwide with Huntington’s disease or at risk of developing the disease. She predicted MY future without knowing my inner strength, resources and drive.Fortunately a month or so before that day, I met Kimberly Burnham, a PhD in Integrative Medicine with a unique take on health and healing and the world in general. After only eight hours of treatment over a couple of months, my outlook on the future was back to a positive, hopeful level. When I began seeing Kim for treatment of my ataxia (lose of balance, dizziness and pressure at the back of my head), those symptoms were interfering with my life on a 24/7 basis. I also had other symptoms including uncontrolled movement of my feet, fingers, shallow/irregular breathing and face twitching. At home, chores such as washing dishes, cleaning, and grocery shopping had to be broken down into tiny tasks in order for me to accomplish them. My dizziness caused me to rest my head against the back of the sofa or chair frequently.During my first manual therapy session Kim stressed the fact that she would be treating me and not the ataxia symptoms or Huntington’s symptoms. As soon as I made my first call to her office, she became a true partner in my physical and emotional healing. After just the first session, I was able to sit straight for hours at a time, without resting my head. After the first couple of sessions, my mom and husband noted that I was articulating my words better including on the phone. Other symptoms that disappeared according to my husband, were the face twitches and difficulty picking up things from the table such as a glasses. He also noticed me just getting around easier. My measure of this is the fact that I can now clean the entire apartment in one day. The ability to do other things are also starting to come back, like walking up a ramp, once an huge obstacle. Over the last year, there are many ways in which the hands-on therapy (Integrative Manual Therapy and Matrix Energetics), nutrition (CoQ10), daily brisk walking and a whole sensory exercise program Kim designed for me including disgust exercises and Nike Sparqs glasses, has helped me move forward in my goal of going back to the field of education where I was a teacher and administrator. These are the things I can do that I couldn’t do a year ago:- Walk at a brisk pace while observing the amazing world around me.- Walk on uneven surfaces, wet leaves and bumpy grass in a balanced confident way.- Expand my rib cage and fill my lungs with air as I move through my day, ensuring that oxygen reaching my healing nervous system.- Read the advertisement on a moving bus, which might not be that educational but now I have a choice to read it or not. I have a new neurologist now, one who is much more compatible with my way of looking at things.   Alleviate Pain with Hands-On Manual Therapy, Biomechanical Approaches and Movement Therapies A large category of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is called hands-on work or manual therapy. If you have enjoyed a massage or visited a physical therapist for work on joint pain or seen a chiropractor for an adjustment, all of these things have a hands-on component and a generally called manual therapy. Other names for this kind of mobilization or improved movement include, Massage, Shiatsu, Integrative Manual Therapy, Osteopathic Manual Medicine, Myofascial Release, Biomechanics, Muscle Energy Technique, Strain and Counterstrain, CranioSacral Therapy, and Visceral Manipulation. Examples of Movement Therapies that can help you move better, relax and decrease stress and pain include, Stretching, Yoga, Qigong, and Taichi. If you were going to massage, touch or mobilize one area what would it be for ataxia solutions?

When I see him, he notes the improvements in my walking and movement and encourages me to purse the alternative medicine approaches I have found. Truly blessed, I am happy to have found options, which support my progress and increase my quality of life, so that I can return to work that has purpose and fulfills me, including the idea of writing a book. -Walk at a brisk pace while observing the amazing world around me.

-Walk on uneven surfaces, wet leaves and bumpy grass in a balanced confident way.

-Expand my rib cage and fill my lungs with air as I move through my day, ensuring that oxygen reaching my healing nervous system.

-Read the advertisement on a moving bus, which might not be that educational but now I have a choice to read it or not.

I have a new neurologist now, one who is much more compatible with my way of looking at things. I get stronger every day, so that I can soon, I hope, support the education of the children near my home in Connecticut and bring a message of hope to those around me. I am unstoppable." - Mary Jane Giardi.
