Mangan put together were entertaining. The Sonoma State University basketball coach Pat Fuscaldo and Sports Development Director Frank Scalercio were great and they even left us with fifty complimentary tickets to a February 2, 2018 home game.

We started out on a new note eliminating a head table on a dais in front of our group. This is not a radical move as the suggestion came from you by a survey that Mark Burchill conducted last year. Other SIR Branches have done this for some time. In fact, this allows us to have the projection screen front and center, another suggested request from our members in the survey.

Our Secretary, Treasurer, and Immediate Past Big SIR may be at the table if they are needed. It is good to have other SIR members sit at the table to converse with the speaker. (continued on page 3)

Chaplains’ Corner (by Herb Percy)

The Train of Life:

At birth we boarded the train and met our parents, and we believe they will always travel by our side. However, at some station our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on this journey alone. As time goes by, other people will board the train and they will be significant i.e. our siblings, friends, children, and even the love of your life.

Many will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we don't realize that they vacated their seats. This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbyes, and fare-wells. Success consists of having a good relationship with all passengers requiring that we give the best of ourselves.

The mystery to everyone is: we do not know at which station we ourselves will step down. So, we must live in the best way, love, forgive, and offer the best of who we are. It is important to do this because when the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat empty we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on the train of life.

I wish you a joyful journey on the train of life. Reap success and give lots of love. More importantly, thank God for the journey. Lastly, I thank you for being one of the passen-gers on my train.

Parking problems at Scottish Rite Center: We have had some problems with parking issues lately and a couple of near misses in the portico area.

Parking is not allowed under the portico except for Scottish Rite staff and loading and unloading. When unload-ing, make sure you leave enough room for another car to pull behind you and/or leave the space available for the Scottish Rite staff. In other words, do not park in the middle of the area. We must leave room for an emergency vehicle to pass through.

Traditionally, this area is one way (there are arrows on the ground but they have faded). Cars should drive around the grassy area and come through the portico in a West to East direction. Once the weather clears, we will be repainting the arrows on the ground to help facilitate the driving.

Remember parking is not allowed on any of the red curbs,

as these are fire lanes. (continued on page 5)

Program for Feb. 16, 2018 (by Dennis Mangan)

With warmer weather just around the corner, February is a good time to talk about golf and deli-cious wine. No one better to do this than the very accomplished, Greg Anderson, PGA Director of Instruction at the Bennett Valley Golf Course. Greg will bring us insight into the world of golf, having been the #1 player on his NCAA Division-1 University of San Diego golf team and with professional success as a multiple course record holder and winner of numerous Northern California PGA Sectional Tournaments. A Class-A PGA professional golf instructor since 1986, Greg has trained under some of the best golf instructors in the business including Jim Flick, Jack Lumpkin, Bob Toski, Paul Runyan, Dean Reinmuth, and Rick Smith. Greg has been featured in PGA Magazine, Forbes Magazine, and GolfWeek Magazine.

Adding to his talent as an accomplished golfing instructor, in 2007 Greg became a certified sommelier as a result of working with his friend, Jess Jackson, at the Kendall Jackson winery. He now leads groups on golf/wine trips around the world as a vacation concierge.

Greg grew up in Sonoma County and graduated from Cardinal Newman High School in 1978. Greg brings a wealth of knowledge and experience about two topics of great interest to SIR 17 members: golf and wine!

LITTLE SIR Message (continued from page 1)

The absence of oxytocin is associated with hostility,

well… let’s just call it crankiness. Such negative

moods are bad for the heart, mind and soul. Cranky

people suffer from social isolation, stress, depression,

and sickness or death from a host of medical conditions.

Positive emotions and agreeableness foster congenial

relationships with others. SIR helps you stay

healthy, happy and full of lots of oxytocin!

BIG SIR Message (continued from page 1)

Don’t be hesitant to sit at the table as it seats eight and the more the merrier. This is not a closed group table.

One of the problems with the old system was that the Little SIR became isolated and had to entertain the speaker from their arrival at about 11:30 to their speech beginning at 12:50. This is one hour and twenty minutes and sometimes a real challenge. It may be that we do not find a rush of members to be Little SIR because you do not like to be isolated and be on display by being on a raised platform in front of the group. It has never been my first choice or others either.

I noticed last year that there were a lot of vacant chairs at each table in the front row of tables. Now I noticed that there are no vacant chairs in the front row of tables and a lot of new people at each table. This is good as we all need to meet other SIRS and be reacquainted with old ones.

Coach Fuscaldo left us with a lesson that he gives his basketball players. He teaches his young people that the most important things in life are in the following order: Family, relationships, grades, and basketball. Isn’t that what our SIRS group would like to follow? After family, we want to build relationships and do the activities we enjoy doing with other SIR members. Let’s give this new approach a try!

Activities:

Boys’ Night Out (Article by Dennis Mangan)

Located one very dark mile west of Fulton Road at the NE corner of Guerneville and Willowside Roads, Walter Hansel Wine & Bistro was the site of our January 10 th Boys’ Night Out (BNO) dinner. Mark Burchill once again organized the outing and herded thirteen SIR Brn 17 guys to a long table set up in the back of the bistro. Fires, families, football dominated the raucous conversa-tions. Popular entrees were chicken cordon bleu, hanger steak, duck breast and the wine flowed freely. A complementary sun-choke puree aperitif and a variety of diges-tifs were offered by the servers. Service was excellent and as requested, individual checks were provided.

BNO provides yet one more way to meet other SIR members and guests while exploring area restaurants.

Consider joining the next BNO outing to be at the:

Riviera Ristorante, 75 Montgomery Drive,

on Wednesday, February 7th

at 6:00 pm for cocktails, order dinner at 6:30 pm.

For more information about the Riviera or to look at their menu go to https://www.rivieraristorante.net/ or call them at 707-579-2882.

The Riviera, a family owned and operated restaurant, is one of the more notable restaurants in our area for fine Italian cuisine. It is also noted as the restaurant of choice for the Professional Bicycling crowd, which includes Lance Armstrong, Levi Leipheimer, and many other notables. Their food is authentic Italian cuisine, made using only the freshest ingredients.

Reservations are a must! To make your reservations, contact Mark Burchill:

[email protected] or call 707-542-2529 by Sunday, February 4, 2018.

Bowling (Article written by Mike Heinzelman)

If you have an interest in joining the SIR bowling league, or just want to see how Bob is progressing, come-on-down to Double Decker Lanes in Roh-nert Park any Monday at 10 AM. Ask for the SIR bowling group. (Remember, it’s not a weekly commitment--just come when you can.) Whether you are a good bowler or a beginner, you are welcome. For more information call Mike Heinzelman at 579-6615

or send an email to him at [email protected].

Bridge Bridge is an important activity with many of our members not only within our own branch but with participation of members from other branches in our area. Bridge activities are coordi-nated by chairman Al Black, email to [email protected] or call 707-578-3210.

We welcome new and interested members who are thinking of joining the pool of players.

Bridge days scheduled this month for play at Legends Restaurant Bennett Valley starting at 10:00 AM on

Tuesdays, February 13th and 27th, 2018.

Couples’ Night Out The largest attendance yet was 34 happy but hungry people assembled on a cold night to enjoy the great food at Basilico Cucina Italiana restaurant. We had the use of the downstairs banquet room all to our-selves which really helps on the noise level and makes for a more fun evening. Everyone was having such a good time we didn’t realize that after 9:30 pm it just might be time to head home. The word is out that Branch 17 has GREAT Couples’ Night Out events, thanks to Fred Rose, as there were SIR mem-bers from an Oakmont Branch and from Branch 76, so it must be good! (See group pictures on page 6)

On Thursday, February 22nd come to La Gare French Restaurant, 208 Wilson Street, Santa Rosa

As Santa Rosa’s most romantic restaurant, where thousands of couples over the years have celebrated engagements, weddings and anniversaries. Traditional French Cuisine in a quaint elegant and relaxed atmos-phere while using only fresh local ingredients.

For more information call 528-4355 or to view their menu and other items, check out their web site at

or call 707-548-5797 to make your reservations by Friday, February 16th or sooner if possible. Hope to see all lot of SIR members and guests at the Couples’ Night Out dining experience!

Garden Club Announcements We meet at one of the tables near the door to share our gardening interests at 11:30 am on our next SIR meeting day, which will be on Friday, February 16th.

Mike Mouat suggests members bring their gardening questions to me. Yet as my background is mostly fruit trees, please also

bring your iPhone so we can look up likely answers!

Mike's first question to head this off is: why do his camellia flowers turn brown and drop off? My best guessing is this is normal. Also use acid mulch and debud to one bud for larger flowers. Doing this will likely increase longer staying and larger flowers.

If anyone would like to help me with their outing sug-gestions please feel free to do so. Also keep open early May for our surprise garden outing. (The surprise may have already "inadvertently" been leaked. Just ask a fellow SIR if they have heard anything.)

Any questions, contact Lance Thompson at:

heading) or call 707-527-3438. Article by Lance Thompson)

The Poem of the month!

Anne Rutledge By Edgar Lee Masters 1869—1950

Out of me unworthy and unknown

The vibrations of deathless music;

“With malice toward none, with charity for all.”

Out of me the forgiveness of millions toward millions,

And the beneficent face of a nation

Shining with justice and truth.

I am Anne Rutledge who sleep beneath these weeds,

Beloved in life of Abraham Lincoln,

Wedded to him, not through union,

But through separation.

Bloom forever, O Republic,

From the dust of my bosom!

Fishing report is on winter vacation!

Recap of Speaker for January 19, 2018 Pat Fuscaldo, head men’s basketball coach at Sonoma State University, was our keynote speaker in January. Pat presented numerous stories about growing up in New York City, playing basketball and inspiring young men to achieve their top per-formance on and off the court. Pat told about how his father was hard on him, yet always showed love and compassion. Pat mockingly told of how he grew up in a “diverse” neighborhood as defined by Italians from all parts of Italy. He said family is key to social and personal well-being.

He applauded SIR for our accumulation of years of knowledge and wisdom, and lamented that young people in our culture don’t recognize us as a resource for answers to complex problems.

Words of Wisdom: You will learn more about a road by traveling it than by just consulting a map.

Sports Update:

The Sonoma State Univ Seawolves men's basketball

team defeated the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters 65-62

on Friday, January 19th. Pat Fuscaldo, the head coach

and SIR keynote speaker that day, threatened to never

do a speaking gig again on game day if his team lost that

night. Well, not to worry Pat...maybe we brought you

some luck! (Article by Mike O’Neill & Dennis Mangan)
