Message from your Newsletter Editor
Another year is nearly over which means we’ll be taking a break over the Christmas/New Year period until February 2017 but Knit and Knatter will resume on Saturday, 14 January as it’s so popular and attendance is growing steadily. There’s usually around 16 of us who are eager for the companionship and laughs that Knit and Knatter delivers.
Thanks to Lindy for sharing her Mini Surprise Jacket knitting pattern. We certainly are blessed to have Lindy as a member! She’s always so helpful and so willing to share her knowledge with us.
Have a wonderful Christmas break and a safe, happy and healthy 2017! See some of you at Bribie Island camp on the 30 January
Until next time…Melanie

Honorary Life Members
Over the years since August, 1978, when our group was founded, a number of honorary memberships have been awarded to members who have given outstanding service. The last two of these were awarded to JAN BOWELL on 8 December 2015 and MERHYL SHEVILL on 27 September 2016. Three earlier recipients of this award are OLIVE KOLKKA, a founding member, PAT LACK and GRACE NEILL. However, some recent research through our archives has revealed that at least one earlier member has also received this award. This is President, MAVIS KING, who was presented with her award in 1993. Mavis is on the left and Irene is presenting what appears to be a small box to Mavis. Both ladies are wearing a sheep motif on their blouses. If any of our older readers can shed any light on this photo or event, we would be delighted to hear from you. A tribute to Mavis, recognising her service to the group, was held at the Inn on the Park on 6 March 1993. The ladies at the table are SUE MURRAY, VAL MARTIN, SUE SWAN, KARIN CLACHER, IRENE GOW and MAVIS KING. Sue Murray and Karin are still members of our group today. Both have given sterling service over the years. Also, if any of our readers know of any other recipients of the honorary membership award, apart from the six ladies mentioned, could you please let me know? I can be contacted on [email protected] or P.O. BOX 2105, Wellington Point 4160.
SANDRA DAVIS.

It seems that Viking Queen Helga is as addicted to knitting as many of us are…
This cartoon from the ”Courier-Mail” shows that she has found knitting a profitable and relaxing way of filling the long Scandinavian winter days and nights: not only has she knitted coats for the household pets and livestock, but she has also created cosy cover for her HOUSE and a luscious green blanket for her LAWN! She has, however, stopped short of knitting covers for the steep, white alps in the background – or has her husband, Hägar, returned from his raiding too soon?
Helga stands triumphantly surveying her creations, looking very satisfied, but the four animals wearing her garments look decidedly glum. Perhaps the yarn is scratchy?
Dik Browne has a great sense of humour.

Knit and Knatter at CapellaBay
In June this year Dianne Mitchell spoke of her idea of establishing a Knit and Knatter group at CapellaBay, the new aged care home at 260 Old Cleveland Road East, Capalaba, where Grace Neill now resides. Grace joined our group in 1991 and has been a very active member of it during her 25 years with us. She attended our annual camps, demonstrated spinning at several Strawberry Festivals, the Heritage Festival and our “Warped & Twisted” exhibition at the Redland Museum in 2010. She has made and donated countless items to our various events and demonstrations. She was made the third Life Member of our group on 28 September 2010.
She has settled in very well at CapellaBay and enjoys the Knit and Knatter sessions very much, encouraging the other craft minded residents to attend and making them welcome.
The first session was held on Monday, 4 July 2016 and was attended by 12 residents. Over the months this number has tended to increase. At present four of our members attend regularly: Dianne, Narelle, Sandra and Tricia. Karin and Shirley G. have also attended. We offer advice and encouragement, show various craft items, discuss techniques and assist a resident when she asks for help with a project.
In September Sandra had the idea of having an article on the Knit and Knatter done for the “seniorlifestyle” magazine. An article on Grace herself was published in the June/July, 2010 edition of this magazine. The interviews for the latest article took place on Monday, 24 October 2016, during the 15th session of the group, which was attended by 19 female residents and one male, Vietnam War veteran, Ian. The editorial contact, Kree Kennedy, resides in Townsville, where her husband is based in the Army, so Shelly Key, the Lifestyle Coordinator at CapellaBay , Grace, Dianne and Sandra were interviewed by telephone. Shelly and Sandra emailed photos taken to Kree, together with the history of the Knit and Knatter group prepared by Dianne and Grace’s craft background prepared by Sandra.
Here is the photo of Shelly with our five ladies and resident Valerie on the left.
Another photo was of Grace spinning as she talked to a visitor at the Spring Festival on 5.9.2003.
Numerous photos of Grace’s extensive repertoire of craft skills were sent to Kree. Among these were appliquéd items, potholders, quilts, knitted rugs, knitted Santas, Humpties…
Those of us who have known Grace during the past 25 years will be familiar with these and many other of Grace’s creations, too. Kree was especially interested in Grace’s achievements, as she forms the link between Knit and Knatter and our group. Also, Grace is very happy to give her consent to having photos published, whereas many of the residents have signed documents forbidding this.
We expect the article to be published in the December/ January edition of “seniorlifestyle” and look forward to it. So do the residents

who attend the Knit and Knatter sessions! They are a lively, chatty group of people who crochet, knit, listen and… KNATTER!
Special thanks and congratulations go to Dianne, who initiated the idea and liaised with Shelly to make it a reality.

Magic Knot
1. Pull both
working and
joining yarns to
pull the knots
together.
2. Trim the
excess ends of
yarn as close as
possible.
3. Give a good
test pull to both
ends of the yarn
to make sure it
holds.
4. Continue
knitting. The
knot should be
invisible in your
work.
