Joanne Tallarovic will pre- sent a program on Weaver Chal- lenges and Solutions. Joanne holds a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in Weaving and Textile Design. She has continued to weave and research, first as a rug weaver, then devoting the last 23 years to discovering the magic of Swedish rips- matta (or Scandinavian rep weave). She exhibits, lectures and teaches workshops nationally. She participated in the first international weaving class in Glimakra, Sweden, and opened the first Glimakra Weaving Center in Rocky River, Ohio, in 1978. She has studied weaving in Sweden and led two weaving tours to Scandinavia. Joanne is a full-time studio artist, teaches workshops nationwide and wrote The Weaver's Studio Rep Weave & Beyond. Our total net sales for 2016 were $15,034.41. The guild paid $1,047.42 in NM Gross Receipt Taxes. That means we were $2,612.32 over last year's sales! The "raffle fund raiser" netted $442. We earned $6.00 less than last year. Our winners were: Michelle Beyer - "Cloudcroft Bob" the angora goat, Cathy McKibben the yarn basket, and (I never win anything) Judy Baird won the spinning basket. Many thanks to the folks who donated items, bought tickets and supported this event! Spiders' Market would not have been possible without the help of many members, especially the "Committee." Special thanks go to Diane Wilhoite (who arranged for us to be on KOB-TV), Barbara Knupper - head of volun- teers, staffing and schedules, Marsha Julian - our cashier and best cheerleader, Crescentia Stonacek - our jewelry maven, Cathlena Burr - set up and display (didn't the sale look great this year?) and Teresa Franklin, advisor. It was a whole lot of work and a whole lot of fun! Thank you, Myra Chang Thompson Spider’s Market

Minutes of the March 29, 2016 meeting of Las Arañas Board

The meeting was called to order at 6:35 pm by President, Chris Allen. Attendance: Board Members

Chris Allen, President Margie Hanson, Secretary Tina Martin, Treasurer Ruth Ronan, continuing Gudrun Mauter, 1st term, 1st year Diane Wilhoite, 1st term, 2nd year Denise Davis, 2nd term, 1st year Judith Larson, 2nd term, 1st year Maura Stone, 2nd term, 1st year Ann Engi, 2nd term, 2nd year

Guests: Rita Starceski, Diane Witt, Mary Ellen McMurtrie, Sandy Gale

Agenda: Agenda for the meeting was amended to include discussion of ordering of Las Arañas shirts & jackets. Amended agenda approved. January 21, 2016 minutes of the Board meeting, as published in the February, 2016 newsletter, were approved unanimously. Treasurer’s Report: (Tina Martin). As of March 29, 2016: General Funds are $14,342.92, Jodie Aves Scholarship funds are $5,781.50, Mary Colton Scholarship funds are $635.00; and Dye Book balance is $8,608.15; for a total of $29,367.57. Treasurer’s report accepted unanimously. Tina asked if she should renew the CD in its entirety or should she remove the dye book funds since an up-dated edition is planned within the year. It was moved and approved that $4,000 of the dye book funds would be removed from the CD to cover printing costs and placed back into the Dye Book account while all other funds in the CD will be rolled over. Announcements: Judy Larson is planning on a day trip to the Spanish Colonial Art museum for the exhibit Chimayó: a Pilgrimage through Two Centuries. A visit to the Crownpoint Na-vaho rug auction was also discussed. Due to potential Guild liability issues if members used their vehicles on a Guild sponsored trip, Judy is going to look into renting a van/small bus with a driver. Equipment: Need to reimburse Rita for the loom parts for the loom that was sold at Spi-ders’ Market. Also need to look at selling the remaining donated equipment on someplace like Ravelry Library: (Mary Ellen McMurtrie). Mary Ellen said that members voted that 17 VHS tapes be replaced with CD or DVD. After researching the costs, Mary Ellen is looking at the possibility of converting the tapes to digital format whether it’s by purchasing or renting the equipment as well as determining which ones we could con-vert without copyright issues..

Fiber Arts Council: Martha Alvarado and Ruth Ronan are organizing the serving of refreshments for the Artists party Friday night for the Colors of the Southwest exhibit. Outreach: (Diane Witt). The Guild has been approached by Galloping Ranch in Rio Rancho again to support Sheep and/or Goat to Shawl demonstrations this summer. Diane talked to the Railyard & it was agreed that instead of Mother’s Day, the Guild will support demonstrations at the end of July Ruth asked for pictures of the outreach events which could be used in the newsletter. Old Business: Report on Establishing Classes Sponsored by the Guild: Tabled until Myra and Becky can attend. Policies Regarding Advertising on the Website and on Facebook Page: Tabled until next Board Meeting.. Use of PayPal: Rita, Tina and Gudrun looked further into adding PayPal so that dues and potentially other things could be paid on-line. Costs are 2.9% plus $0.30 per transac-tion which the Guild would absorb for dues. Additionally it appears that all the information required in the membership application can be included as well. It was moved and approved that Rita and Tina with Ruth’s assistance are authorized to develop a PayPal button on the website for dues and other things. New Business: Fiber Arts Fiesta (Sandy Gale): As a co-sponsoring Guild for the Fiber Arts Council, Las Arañas has the responsibility for the Weaving and Spinning Division for Fiber Arts Fiesta. Sandy is a member of the Fiesta Com-mittee and has proposed some revisions of the Rules for the Weaving and Spinning Divi-sion. The revisions are based on consideration of the goal of the Fiesta, the Fiesta policies, past decisions on the incorporation of different fiber techniques within the division, fiscal im-pact on the Las Arañas guild, the diverse fiber interests of our own guild members, and the challenges of meeting obligations in organiza-tions depending on volunteers. The following is a list of the significant changes for 2017: ● Cash awards will be continued but reduced. Dollar amounts for Best of Show, Judge’s Choice, Special Merit Awards and 1st place within a category are unchanged. After discus-sion it was moved and approved to stop paying 2nd and 3rd place cash awards and to give them ribbons only for 2017. ● The Wearable category should be subdi-vided into two sub-categories: Wearable woven and/or felted (coats, jackets, dresses, ponchos, etc.) and Wearable accessories woven and/or

felted (scarves, shawls, hats, purses, neck-laces, etc.) to maintain more similarity for judg-ing. It was moved and approved to add the second category for accessories. ● In 2010 there was a group of basket mak-ers who had enough organizational strength to qualify as a co-sponsoring guild within the Fiesta. However after 2013, the basket weav-ers lost their leadership and had to disband their group. There have been requests to the Fiber Arts Council that there be a way for bas-kets to be included in the appropriate existing divisions. It was moved and approved that baskets be added to the Functional woven and/or felted category along with other household items. ● Previously ‘handling pieces’ for yardage and hand spun and wheel spun skeins needed to be submitted at the time of entry application. However with the advent of the electronic entry process, that requirement barred those entries from using the on-line process. It was moved and approved that the handling pieces for yard-age and both types of skeins be submitted with the accepted entry. Youth Membership (Judy Larson): Judy exchanged e-mail with Patty Savignac, UNM instructor of weaving, about ideas for encourag-ing students to join the Guild. Patty provided a lot of information and a number of ideas. One of the main ones was to reintroduce student mem-bership rates to be used by those with a valid student ID. However, fees for 2017 don’t go into effect until September so it was decided to table this issue until the next Board meeting. Scheduling of Ice Cream Social: .It was decided to combine the tail gate party with the June Retreat instead of holding it sepa-rately. Therefore, the ice cream social which has been in conjunction with the tail gate party will not be held. Scheduling of June Retreat: After discussion, it was decided to combine the re-treat with the tail gate party on either June 18th or 25th. Chris will check into holding the com-bined activity at the Gutierrez - Hubbell House, or at the Old Pajarito Church, both on Isleta SW or at the Old Church, Corrales. Ordering New Shirts (Ruth Ronan): Ruth has had several requests to order more denim shirts, jackets or polo shirts with the Las Arañas logo. She has checked and the prices are the same as previously. A minimum order is 12 items, & there are both men’s and women’s sizes. Since payment will be required prior to placing the order, there is no risk for the Guild. Further information will be in the newsletter. Next Meeting: July 21, 6:30 pm.

Meeting adjourned at 8:25 pm
