For educatorsMonster English 1, Unit 12The kids are home, but there is silence in the house. What does the silence mean? It’s always good to ask. Parents, and educators, can use this simple technique to find out what children are doing. And friends can use it to ask one another.

Language Goals 1. Learn vocabulary for everyday activities.

reading email, doing homework, watching TV, etc.2. Ask and answer what someone is doing.

“What are you doing?” “I’m brushing my teeth.”3. Ask if someone is doing something.

“Are you eating an apple?” 4. Clarify what you are doing.

“Yes, I am.” “No, I’m eating an orange.”5. Practice asking about activities using the third person.

“Is Taro eating an apple.”“Yes, he is.” “No, he’s eating a banana.”

Classroom tips

Activity ideasThis is a great chapter to play the ‘memory game’. It’s simple.

1. Sit in a circle.2. The first student says what they are doing. For example, “I’m watching TV.”3. The next student adds another activity. “I’m watching TV, and washing my hands.”4. Each student then adds more. “I’m watching TV, washing my hands, and playing soccer.”5. Play as long as you like.AND… do it again using third person pronouns when you get there.

Act it out! Have one student mime and activity, while two others ask and answer about what the student is doing.
