RB 001 (TUT 1)

Page 5: RB001 PPT Basic Robot

What will we learn today?

We’ll make a simple remote

controlled robot which can be

made to move in any desired

direction

Make teams of 4-5 who are determined to ‘MAKE THIS HAPPEN’

Page 6: RB001 PPT Basic Robot

Tools required

• Hacksaw / Jigsaw

• Hand drill / Power drill

• Spanners

• Pliers

• Screwdriver

• Wire Stripper

Differential Drive System

Page 8: RB001 PPT Basic Robot

Materials required

• Wood

• Nuts and bolts

• Motors

• Wheels

• Clamps & flanges

• Batteries

• Wires

• Switches

Page 9: RB001 PPT Basic Robot

Basic structure

• Wood (Easiest material to work with)

• Acrylic

• Aluminium

• Simplest shape to cut : Rectangular

Page 10: RB001 PPT Basic Robot

Motor

• Electromechanical devices which converts EE into ME

• Two terminals

• Can rotate in both directions

• Main Specifications:

– RPM (Rotations per minute)

– Torque (kgcm)

– Voltage (V)

Page 11: RB001 PPT Basic Robot

Motor Parts

• Shaft: It is where we attach wheel or an other mechanism

• Gearbox: This is to reduce the basic rpm of the motor to the desired one.

• Motor: High RPM motor which is then reduced using gearbox.

GEAR BOX MOTOR SHAFT

Page 12: RB001 PPT Basic Robot

Wheels

• Normal Wheels

• Omni Wheels

Page 13: RB001 PPT Basic Robot

Motor-wheel assembly

• Motors connected to wheels using flanges or by tight-fit

Page 14: RB001 PPT Basic Robot

Clamping motor-wheel to chassis

–‘C’ clamps

–‘U’ clamps

–‘L’ clamps

–Special clamps

Fixing of castor wheel

• Align castor such that chassis remains parallel to the ground.

Why 3 wheels & not 4 wheels?

• To define a plane uniquely, you require atleast 3 points, but if we have 4 points we need to make sure that all the four points lie in a plane.

• Hence, 3 is the preferred choice. We need suspensions incase of 4 wheels

Page 23: RB001 PPT Basic Robot

Placement of battery • Make sure Center of Gravity remains as low as

possible.

• Lead acid, LiPO(Lithium Polymer), Ni-Mh

Page 24: RB001 PPT Basic Robot

Motor control

• DPDT ( Double Pole Double Throw ) switches controls each motor.

How to get involved??

• Techsoc: Manual & Autonomous Robotics

• Make your own remote controlled robot

• Involve yourself with seniors who are into robotics

• Volunteer for ongoing projects in CFI.

• Tech fests of other colleges and institutions
