I dont know who writes under theguise of Joe Sixpack but whoever it isis a ridiculous chauvenist. Portrayingthe Democrats as the ones responsi-ble for this economy is irresponsibleand just plain air headed. You areshowing your inner-selves and doingthis community a disservice by pub-lishing such rot.

gailt22, correct me if were wrong tosay that its no coincidence that thisrecession started in December-07 one year after the Dems got controll of the House. A year later is was ditto for the Senate, the Govenors and theWhitehouse. And now, another year later, were in a depression. And bythe way, Its chauvinist dear. U-n-i-t-eThis President becomes more of an

embarrassing laughing matter everyday as the latest head-shaker at theglobal warming summit inCopenhagen had him flying back toDC a day early because of thestrongest blizzard in years there. If the globe is warming and creating allvarious and sundry natural phenome-non will someone please tell me why

the Worlds warmest year on record isstill 1998 and all those devastatinghurricanes and floods that were sureto double have been non-existant for 4 years running?

Factoid: The average surfacetemperature of the planet hasincreased 1.33 degrees Fahrenheitbetween 1905 and 2005, according tonumerous verifiable sources. Thats100 years. According to the Gore fac-tion, melting glaciers, rising sea levelsand erratic weather patterns meansthe end of the world and somethingmust be done this year!

jumped over 46 percent since the startof the recession. And while it may be abit touting, we have to take credit for predicting last March that the bailoutwas all about their hides versus ours.True colors coming through and theyrenot pretty.

The Scheme Of ThingsOf Things vvs w s

    Under The RugBy Roger Franklin.

The Islands growing homeless pop-ulation doesnt get any press untilanother one turns up dead. Growingis the key word here and it needsmore than ever to be addressed. A2007 report by the South CarolinaCouncil on Homelessness found thaton any given night, there were 6,759homeless people in South Carolina nearly 20% of whom were children.

This report concluded with an esti-mated real count of 17,000. Thatwas three years ago this month.

Check it out for yourself at schome-less.org.This problem is not going away. A

matter of fact has it that the milder cli-mate has them coming in from allover, New York City began buyingone-way plane tickets for their home-less families to leave the city in 2007,and dozens of the families have land-

ed in Georgia and South Carolina. The New York Times reported that

it's part of a Bloomberg administrationprogram to keep the homeless out of their expensive shelter system, whichcosts $36,000 a year per family. Morethan 550 families have left the citysince 2007. Its all about economics, its cheaper to buy them a plane ticket.source: The Augusta Chronicle,Wednesday, July 29, 2009.

This is not a current phenomenondue to the prevailing economy. A timebomb began ticking in the mid-1970s,when the psychiatric and mentalhealth professions went politically cor-rect and identified the mentally ill as"victims" who required advocates.

Announcing in the mid-1970s thatconfining mental patients violatedtheir civil rights, a cadre set to work torelease as many patients as theycould, resulting in the huge homelessphenomenon of the 1980s that re-mains with us today. The media spinmaintained that these abandoned citi-zens were the victims of the cruel

American capitalist society. In other words, it was our fault that peoplemarginalized by society existed, dramatizing that the public deservedthis inconvenience for living selfishlives. Sound familiar?

Upon examination, it was discov-ered -- but not reported by a compliantmass media -- that over 80% of thehomeless were actually newlyreleased mental patients, not dispos-sessed victims of the economic sys-tem. Other nations saw the phenome-non as the underside of America'seconomic system, when actually thehomeless were purposefully inflictedon U.S. society by political radicalssuch as we have today.

Read: Whether coincidentally or ina clever conspiracy, by the time the

first waves of homeless hit the streetsafter their release, activist lawyersassured their "right" to roam at will byhaving all the vagrancy and loiteringlaws in the country struck down in var-ious court rulings. Citizens who askedwhy they weren't protected fromattacks by street vagrants were toldby the police that their hands weretied. The entire homeless problemappeared to be a plot to embarrass

Americans for being Americans and toprove that capitalism had failed.

You know the rest. Cities now care

for the homeless at great cost. Themajority of Beaufort Countys home-less are housed at the DetentionCenter on the Tax payers dime.

However, as every other facet of thelocal population, the Islands home-less have an identity of their own. There are no known accounts of homeless people harassing pedestri-ans and businesses. On the contrary.

The Islands homeless number about 25 according to Islander Elizabeth Ginns. homeless herself and admittedly ashamed of it. She

nevertheless works at odd jobs at sev-eral S-end bars, is never seen withher hand out, and chooses to campout rather than live at the DetentionCenter courtesy of the tax payer.

David Jeffrey Craig, a 40-year-oldhomeless man, was pulled from thewaters May 6 near the Circle Center on Pope Avenue. Craig probably wasin the water for one to two weeksbefore being spotted by a passingpedestrian. In the same Packetpiece, in an almost by the way men-tion, another homeless man waspulled from the same lagoon last year.Gary Collins, 58, of Hilton Head wasretrieved after being in the water for 10 days. He had drowned.

In another Packet piece on July 25,51-year-old Robert Boardman wasfound dead in the same area as Craig

and Collins. Although promises thattoxicology reports would be forthcom-ing, there have been none and we stilldont know how these people died.

As the local homeless numbers goup, and they are, the daileys continueto ignore the problem as if its becomean embarrassment to report suchinformation. These people may be vic-tims of their own personal choices, buttheyre not a bunch of dangerous cra-zies. We knew all the people that diedand are still waiting for the causes of death. More as it comes. rf

Google ThisHoly Mol folks, Little Joe is under

fire for last months piece on theDemocratic party and Ive been chal-lenged to factualize everything I saidabout their failed social programs. Itwould appear that the two ladies thatganged up on me in Harbour Town areincapable of doing the work of check-ing it out for themselves. So Ivedecided to put forth another fact or two for their benefit.

    Q. What do the top ten cities with thehighest poverty rate all have in com-mon? Detroit, MI (#1 on the poverty list)

hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961; Thank you KawameKilpatrick.

    Buffalo, NY (2nd) hasn't electedone since 1954;

    Cincinnati, OH (3rd)...since 1984; Cleveland, OH (4th)...since 1989;

Miami, FL (5th) has never had aRepublican mayor; St. Louis, MO (6th)....since 1949; El Paso, TX (7th) has never had a

    Republican mayor; Milwaukee, WI (8th)...since 1908; Philadelphia,PA (9th)...since 1952;

Newark,NJ(10th)...since 1907.So whats the point? Simply, It is the

disadvantaged who habitually electDemocrats, yet are still disadvantagedtoday. Imagine that ladies.

And while were on the subject of political fact or fiction, lets get to thecrux. In political theory 101, democra-

cy describes a small number of relat-ed forms of government and also apolitical philosophy. Even thoughthere is no universally accepted defi-nition of 'democracy', there are twoprinciples that any definition of democracy includes. The first is thatall members of the society (citizens)have equal access to power and thesecond that all enjoy universally rec-ognized freedoms and liberties.

Socialists mainly share the belief that capitalism unfairly concentratespower and wealth among a small seg-ment of society that controls capital, creates an unequal society, and doesnot provide equal opportunities for everyone in society. Therefore social-

ists advocate the creation of a societyin which wealth and power are distrib-uted more evenly based on theamount of work expended, althoughthere is considerable disagreementamong socialists over how, and towhat extent this could be achieved.

Little Joe thinks herein lies the prob

lem with Socialism folks. Socialismhas never worked for long becausethe amount of work expended canonly be measured by what an individ-ual has to show for it. Socialism is inits very essence a canard. AnyGovernment that claims to be allabout spreading the wealth moreevenly is a liar and does so only tostay in power. Its just that simple girls.

    All WarmedOver

This man-made climate crisis is justanother Dem ploy to stay in power

    folks. Without historical context there

can be no real understanding of exis-tential issues, certainly not of essen-tial continuities. That's why those whoseek to obfuscate and skew do their utmost to erase telltale fundamentalperspectives and present whatever they focus upon as cogent isolatedconcerns aka solid science. For thedullards out there, please read: withno proof or evidence of a track recordever existing, what did or did not hap-pen years ago cannot be assumed tobe important today and no decisionscan be made on such dis- and mis-information aka "opinions".

But alas, the more doubt shed themore adament the Dems get on thecertainty of man-made warming. LJ6

Constitution gives all citizens the rightto keep and bear arms. If data fromthe Bureau of Justice Statistics areany indication, many Americans areexercising this freedom. Nationally,42 percent of people responding to a2008 survey reported having a gun intheir home. That's up from 36 percentin 1999, when gun ownershipreached an all-time low.

Whether theyre antique rifles or modern handguns and shotguns, theU.S. has a lot of firearms. In 2009,U.S. companies manufactured 3.85

million guns, according to the ATF. Among gun owners, 58 percentown pistols, 63 percent own shotgunsand 59 percent own rifles [source:Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2003,2008]. The sales data paint a slightlydifferent picture. According to theNational Shooting Sports Foundation,a third of all gun sales can be attrib-

uted to handguns such as revolversand pistols, a third to rifles and shot-guns, and a third to ammunition.

Drug Stores Busted For Selling Expired

When you're picking something up off theshelf at a store, its probably always a goodidea to check the expiration date.

Connecticut AG Richard Blumenthal is suing CVSPharmacy, Inc. for allegedly selling food, beverages andover the counter medications past their expiration dates at 20 or more of itsConnecticut stores.

"CVS peddled potentially tainted food and ineffective medicine. Whether CVS was careless or heedless or overzealous for revenue, it betrayed its trustto consumers," Blumenthal said. Any item past its expiration date should be off shelves, out of stores.

Expired items allegedly sold by CVS include cough and allergy medicines, baby formula and antacids, as well as energy drinks and dairy products, suchas milk, eggs and yogurt. Investigators found the expired products in the sum-mers of 2008 and 2009, Blumenthal said.

Last month, CVS agreed to pay $875,000 to end a probe by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo into the sale of expired products in its NewYork stores, and agreed to implement new policies to prevent expired goodsfrom being sold.

Rite Aid reached a similar agreement with New York last year and agreed

to pay $1.3 million and adopt new internal policies.Nearly half of all CVS stores surveyed last year were found selling expiredproducts compared to about a quarter in 2008. It also showed numerousstores selling expired products both years.

rail Factoids: About Marijuana and FAQ.Marijuana is the third most popular recreational drug in America (behind only

alcohol and tobacco), and has been used by nearly 80 million Americans. According to government surveys, some 20 million Americans have smokedmarijuana in the past year, and more than 11 million do so regularly despiteharsh laws against its use. Our public policies should reflect this reality, notdeny it.

Marijuana is far less dangerous than alcohol or tobacco. Around 50,000people die each year from alcohol poisoning. Similarly, more than 400,000

deaths each year are attributed to tobacco smoking. By comparison, marijua-na is nontoxic and cannot cause death by overdose. According to the presti-gious European medical journal, The Lancet, "The smoking of cannabis, evenlong-term, is not harmful to health. ... It would be reasonable to judgecannabis as less of a threat ... than alcohol or tobacco."

one of the hottest cult films of theyear. In Tim Allen's directorial debut,he stars as a man recently releasedfrom prison. His sister lied to his fam-ily and said he was in France for threeyears. Grins: To Coin a Great PhraseHave you ever wondered who first uttered the phrase 'You Gotta Be Shittin'

Me''? Well, it just so happens to have originated through the Father of Our Country, way back when George Washington was crossing the Delaware River with his troops. There were 33 (remember this number) in Washington's boat.It was extremely dark and storming furiously and the water was tossing themabout. Finally, Washington grabbed Corporal Peters (remember this name)and stationed him at the front of the boat with a lantern. He ordered him tokeep swinging it, so they could see where they were heading. CorporalPeters, through driving rain and cold, continued swinging the lantern back andforth, back and forth.

Then a big gust of wind and a wave hit and threw Corporal Peters and hislantern into the Delaware. Washington and his troops searched for an hour try-ing to find Corporal Peters, but to no avail. All of them felt terrible, for the

Corporal had been one of their favorites. Sometime later, Washington and histroops landed on the other side, wet and totally exhausted. He rallied thetroops and told them that they must go on. An hour later, one of his men said,'General, I see lights ahead.' They trudged toward the lights and came upona huge house. What they didn't know was that this was a house of ill repute, hidden in the forest to serve all who came. General Washington pounded onthe door, his men crowding around him. The door swung open, and much tohis surprise stood a beautiful woman. A huge smile came across her face, tosee so many men standing there. Washington was the first to speak, 'Madam,I am General George Washington and these are my men. We are tired, wet, exhausted, and desperately need warmth and comfort.' Again, the Madamlooked at all the men standing there, and with a broad smile on her face, said,'Well, General, you have come to the right place. We can surely give youwarmth and comfort.. How many men do you have?' Washington replied,'Well, Madam, without Peters there are 32 of us.' And with a dropped jaw, theMadam squinted and said, 'You gotta be shittin me.' Aw man!

As for surprises I can say there arereally only a couple.

First off, one nod that's not really asurprise is the one that went toJeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker, most likely edging out Daniel Day-Lewis for Nine. Considering we aretalking about actors nominatingactors this seems about right. However, Diane Kruger getting a

nomination for her performance inInglourious Basterds is a bit of a sur-prise, especially as she's beatingout her co-star in that film MelanieLaurent, not to forget MarionCotillard in Nine, both performancesI believe are more deserving. As for the rest, no big surprises.

    Local Bars &

R&R RuleBy Cork JamesBlame it on the economy because

thats what the local bar scene is allabout these days. With tourist venuesand warm weather stages currently incheck, the most affordable musicvenues are the smaller, wee hour destinations where light fare, drink

specials and the best no cover, smallact live music prevails. Check out our picks for the best of this month.

Tommy Simms , our featuredsoloist, is who we believe to be theareas most consummate electric gui-tarist and the only other we know thatcan touch him is Arnell Byrd, a guyweve never seen in a small, local bar setting. While often alternating be-tween the standard acoustic and anelectric six-string, the acoustic wasntdesigned for the exceptional dexterityand precision that Simms has beengifted with and he makes the tasty rifsand ripping solos appear effortless.

While frequently working the smaller venues on a one night stand basis, aspiring guitarist can usually catchTommy Simms at The Alligator Grilleon Saturday nights.

While guitarist Craig Coyne andGary Pratt aka The JalapnoBrothers demean their entertainmentvalue by choosing low seating, for theserious roots music listener they are aquality acoustic act that few canmatch. Both gifted with solid guitar and vocal skills, the accomplishedsolo work of Coyne accentuating thefull bodied vocals of Pratt blend for acommanding acoustic sound. For themost part performing R&R Classicsand early day blues material, theseguys work from a huge repertory andare capable of winging anythingtheyve ever heard.

The Groove Tones is the most hardworking high energy blues-roots triofor miles. Playing long sets and takingshort breaks these guys take the gigseriously and it shows from audiencereaction. While bassist Tony Reyeshas a soft touch on the strings he

belts every vocal with the naturalfacial expression and genuine bodylanguage that accentuates them.Guitarist Bill Luebkes raspy voice ismade for the classic blues material hechooses and those who have never seen the G-Tones, but may haveheard their CD, will probably assumehes black. Hard driven by GregGreshams solid, straight ahead per-cussion these guys are an ideal localbar band that earn every penny.

This particular version -pictured atthe top- of The Martin Lesch Bandaka The Spare Parts is one hot quar-tet. While pianist Martin Lesch-left

and guitarist Craig Coyne-3rd from-are the staples seen performing withpick-up bassists and drummers, thechemistry flowing from this ensembleis second to none. Working a back toback jam MO and seldom addressingthe crowd, their sets are straight

ahead, high energy performancesthat only the most serious listenersand dance lovers can appreciate.

While Lesch or Parts can usuallybe seen at Remys on any givenWednesday or Thursday night via theproverbial box of chocolates, this par-ticular line-up has no set scheduleand may be hard to catch.

Whether Carpe Sanus (Sieze TheSound) developes into a band of accomplished musicians remains tobe seen but the raw talent is appar-ent. Seize is: Devin Anderson-Vocals, Logan Edelman-Lead Guitar,Tomie Shirin-Bitton-Rhythm Guitar,

Madison Edelman- Bass and AnthonyRigg - Drums. For a handful of teensto be focused on original material atsuch an early age we have to believethat with proper direction their futureis cut out. The lyrics of writers

Anderson and Edelman both implysexual precociousness and pour out

what some would consider risqu .

With the New year shaping up to bea 2009 repeat most of the more savvybar/restaurant owners are getting yetmore aggressive with their promo-tions. The competition has never been as fierce as it is today and withsteal-deal offerings abound the frugalminded locals are being targetedIsland-wide.

PB Sunrise Cafe has ruled thebreakfast hours Island-wide for yearsnow and we see little change through-out the Winter months there as PBSCcontinues to attract the lions share of the breakfast/brunch locals seekingvariety and prompt in and out access.

Kuramas long time local sushi lov-ing clientele and table-side Chef entertainment combined with a 20%discount for locals only should keepnumbers steady there and we seethis as one of the Islands fewJapanese restaurants sustaining byyears end.

The Frosty Frog has the distinctionof being the Islands only frozendaquiri offering which keeps steadynumbers going there which of coursefalls off this time of year via ColignyPlazas visitor destination location.

The Zone is the N-ends hottest spotcurrently and we have to believe that

    Some speculate that

2010 will be a pivotal year for F&B destina-tions choosing to

    ignore the need toaggressivly address

their competition.Regardless, for those who do, it has to be apleasure for patrons

who consider theevening meal as the

    highlight of the day!

    Bio:Freddie Cole

Lionel Frederick Cole was born onOctober 15, 1931, the youngest of Edward and Paulina Nancy Cole's fivechildren. His three elder brothers,Eddie, Ike and Nat (twelve years

Freddy's senior) were all musicians. In the Chicago home of his youth,

visitors included Duke Ellington,Count Basie, and Lionel Hampton.

After a possible career with the NFLwas shelved due to a hand injury, hebegan playing and singing in Chicagoclubs as a teenager. Although he wasready to hit the road at 18, his mother intervened and he continued his musi-cal education at the RooseveltInstitute in Chicago.

Freddy moved to New York in 1951,where he studied at the JuilliardSchool of Music and found himself profoundly influenced by John Lewis,Oscar Peterson and Teddy Wilson. Hegot a Master's degree at the NewEngland Conservatory of Music andthen spent several months on theroad as a member of an Earl Bostic

band that also included Johnny Colesand Benny Golson.

It was back in New York that Freddysuccessfully laid the groundwork for acareer that continues to flourish to thisday. He developed a vast repertoire of songs in Manhattan bistros and con-currently began to supplement his liveperformances with television andradio commercial jingle work. A resident of Atlanta, GA since 1972,

he currently leads a trio made up of himself, guitarist Randy Napoleon, drummer Curtis Boyd and bassistElias Bailey that regularly tours theUS, Europe, the Far East and South

America. Cole will be at the JazzCorner on HIlton Head January15&16. Freddy has been a recordingartist since 1952, when his first single,The Joke's on Me, was released onan obscure Chicago-based label.

Freddy recorded several albums for European and English companiesduring the 1970s that helped himdevelop a loyal overseas following. He developed a stand-up act, a better rapport with audiences, and learnedto sing in other languages.

Cole doesn't apologize for soundinglike his brother, Nat King Cole. Thereare certain unmistakable similarities. He plays piano and sings and per-forms live with guitar and uprightbass, just like Nat. But he hasemerged from the awesome shadowcast by his elder brother. In truth, hisphrasing is far closer to that of FrankSinatra or Billie Holiday than that of his brother.

Cole's career continues to ascendas he has moved into the front ranksof America's homegrown art form witha style and musical sophistication allhis own.

Grins: Ask A Simple Question An Airline Pilot wrote that on one particular flight he had hammered his ship into the runway really hard.

The Airline had a policy which required the First Officer to stand at the door while the Passengers exited, smile, and give them a "Thanks for flying our Airline." He said that in light of his bad landing, he had a hardtime looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a wise comment. Finally every-one had gotten off except for a little old lady walking with a cane. She said, "Sir, do you mind if I ask you aquestion?" "Why, no, Ma'am," said the Pilot. "What is it?" The little old lady said, "Did we land, or were weshot down? snick-snick, go granny go!

Scam artists grew ever more sophis-ticated in 2009, moving away fromspam emails and fast-talking telemar-keters towards a more "corporate"image. The old tried-and-true scams --advance-fee loans, phony lotteries,"free" cruises -- have by no means dis-appeared but in 2009, clever mar-keters added a few new twists.

    1. "Free Trials"Who wouldnt want a brighter smile,

especially if it were cheap and easy? One common pitch is for a "free" trial-sized bottle of teeth whitener. The con-sumer provides credit card information

to pay a $2 fee for shipping. You canguess the rest.

2, Foreclosure "Rescues"Many scams depend on desperation

to hook victims and perhaps nothingdrives people to despair faster than theprospect foreclosure. The scammerscharged desperate homeowners alarge, up-front fee and told them not tocontact their lender. In these scams, operators promise to either arrange for loan modifications or save it from fore-closure. They never do, however, andthe homeowner loses their home.

ing their homes to foreclosure, chances are they are also drowning indebt and prime targets for the debtsettlement scam. The number of com-panies claiming they can settle con-sumers' debts for pennies on the dollar proliferated in the last year, leavingmany victims poorer and deeper indebt.

4.Government Stimulus In February, Congress passed and

President Obama signed a $700 billionstimulus bill, a massive infusion of fed-eral spending that was designed tostimulate the economy. Almost imme-diately there appeared Internet adswith the president's smiling face, prom-ising consumers they could cash inand get a share of the loot. TV ads andmillions of spam emails went out, promising the same thing. Thousandsactually fell for it.

    5. Acai Berry The Acai Berry Scam is testament tothe Oprah Effect. When the Queen of Talk expresses interest in a subject, it

creates major buzz. So when Oprahdevoted several of her shows to thepowers of the acai berry to help controlweight, scammers went into overdrivedealing supplements.
