T-charts and Y-charts can be used to develop specific sensory pictures to help youth learn new behaviors. Every act we make we must first conceive. There are two parts to any behavior that first is to create it in our minds. The second is to create it in the world. Often schools have beliefs or bottom lines handing on the wall. The beliefs are created at an abstract level of thinking. The bottom lines are developed to protect our beliefs.

T-charts and Y-charts are done with the students to concretize our beliefs into sensory perceptions. A Y-chart has three parts to tap three senses– sight, sound, and feeling. A Y-chart is either totally positive or totally negative. Do not mix the two. You will need to do two Y-charts if you want to illustrate two different conditions. Conversely, the T-chart is designed to separate and illustrate the positive from the negative. There is a side for on task and a side for off task.

Ideally a bottom line removal is followed by R & R (Restorative Restitution).
