CKXL's Brad Phillips responds to criticismIn the May 25th issue of RPM some recordcompany reps took Western Radio to taskwith regard to the hesitancy by some toadd records until there is U.S. action, inspite of the hit status the record may havein the rest of Canada. Brad Phillips, Pro-gram Director of CKXL Calgary admits thatstations in Western Canada sometimes dowait for U.S. chart action before adding aa record.

"We're not going to tell you that wedon't use U.S. music trades," said Phillips."We'll add a record that's moving which hasno U.S. action. I think Canadian program-mers can use U.S. charts that have a U.S.data base. We can tap into this data base."

Phillips believes the musical tastes be-tween Canadians and Americans aren't verydifferent and that the use of U.S. tradesby Canadian stations is an old complaint.

"Sure some record companies willphone to complain, but they have to under-stand that we're running a business," con-tinues Phillips. "More often than not, arecord company will bring it (the problem)to our attention."

Phillips acknowledged that the stationdoes use a U.S. consultant, but not formusic. "The consultant is used more forphilosophical reasons, centering on presen-tation, image and format," he explains. He also pointed out that CKXL is on theDire Straits single, Walk Of Life, althoughthe song isn't receiving much attentionin the U.S.

"We used to use Joint Communications,"

Capitol gold to Montreal's Luba for theirLet It Go single and Secrets And Sins LP,during visit to Capitol's Toronto offices(I to r) Alain Couture, Pierre Marchand, MarkLyman, Luba, Dave Evans (Pres. Capitol -EMI Canada), Peter Marunzak, MichaelBell, and Paul Levesque (Mgr. Luba).

YOUNG continued from Page 1

Of Association was recorded in Paris (PatheMarconi), Sussex (Park Gates), and London(Workhouse Studios).

Among the 11 tracks on Associationthere are 5 new songs penned by Young andKewley: Everything Must Change, Tomb OfMemories, One Step Forward, Hot Fun, andThis Means Anything.

Young's current touring band, The RoyalFamily is comprised of Johnny Turnbull(guitar), Matt Irving (keyboards), IanKewley (keyboards), Mark Pinder (drunis),Pino Palladino (bass) and backgroundsingers George Chandler, Jimmy Chambers, and Tony Jackson. - KCW

he continues. "The decision to use Johnswas a company decision made by Moffat. There wasn't anyone in Canada who couldoffer what we needed. The services theyprovide us are general. They give us poten-tial ideas that work in the States."

Phillips was asked if he believed someCanadian stations are insecure about theirown judgements as far as making a commit-ment to a song.

"I would say that's a fair assessment,"he answered. "We look at everyone's chart. We're in a fortunate position at Moffatin that we can phone other Moffat stations."

It should be pointed out that when Relaxby Frankie Goes To Hollywood was a hit inseveral areas of the country, CKXL did airthe single initially for a few weeks. Phillipsexplained that not long after this airing theprevious music department at the station, dropped the song because of its lyricalcontent. When the single was finally re-leased in the U.S., long after it had beena hit in Canada, the station again picked itup - to make up for the loss.

Despite some negative feedback, Phillipsstill believes Canadian radio is growing upenough to gain its own identity.

"If somebody doesn't keep their earsto the ground, then somebody else isgoing to get ahead. With the competitivesituation, the competition makes themtruer to their own market."

Sherman/Mister Soundrestructures top endR.J. Muckle, Vice President and GeneralManager of Sherman/Mister Sound stores(Capitol Records' Retail Division), hasannounced the restructuring of his seniormanagement team - effective June 3.

Says Muckle, "We are adopting a nationalstructure versus the regional one we wereoperating under; this will allow us to con-tinue the aggressive merchandising pro-grams that have been highly successfulthis year while ensuring maximum opera-tional control in all our outlets."

Dave Hanson, formerly Western RegionManager, becomes National MerchandisingManager, responsible for product, advertis-ing, and store creativity. He will be basedin Toronto.

Sheldon Frymerman, formerly CentralRegion Manager, becomes National Opera-tions Manager, responsible for all DistrictSupervisors, stores, and store operations. He is based in Toronto.

Both Hanson and Frymerman willreport to Muckle in their new positions.

Betty Stewart continues as the Admini-stration Manager responsible for financialevaluation, budgets, and non -inventorybuying.

"Our goal this year," explains Muckle,"is to maximize sales and profits in theRetail Division," concluding with, "Thisnew national structure will greatly enhanceour position in these areas.

Lucas ponders `RB's`Process of Change'Ralph Lucas, Toronto AM stationCFRB's new Program Director, believes pro-gramming changes implemented at the sta-tion earlier this year "may have been right",but that the method of implementation waswrong.

"I want to continue the process ofchange, but in a gradual fashion," Lucas says."CFRB is lucky...it's dealing from a pos-ition of strength. But I'd like to think of theprocess from here on in as a quick evolution."

Lucas, experienced(20 years in radio)andarticulate, believes that while the station'snews/sports coverage remains something ofa standard throughout the demographic,CFRB's music programming has been"blow-ing away" a generation of young listeners." The station has to stay in touch withToronto," Lucas responds, " My mandateinvolves modifications within each pro-gramming element. We do have a very loy-al core audience, but there are also a lot ofpeoplewe're missing out on."

Asked about corporate influence in thesematters, Lucas responds, " The(PD)positionhere is relatively autonomous - I'm aware ofthe company's stand, but it doesn't intimi-date me. I've spent half my career workingfor Standard -owned stations."

A native of Montreal, Lucas began hisradio career in 1964 at Montreal's CFMB.Following a stint at CKGM, he went to Tor-onto, working for CFRB and CKFM - on afreelance/contract basis - before returningto Montreal. His position at CFRB currentlyfollows time with CFQR and CJAD, thelatter in a VP and Station Manager position.

Lucas is obviously challenged by what liesahead. " I think that I can slice off some FMshare," he says, continuing with " but a lothas happened in the 12 years since I washere. Obviously, the corporation recognizesthe need for change - that's why I'm here. But it does take time; it's always wiser toknow why certain things are in place beforeyou try and change them."

We suffer from overkill . . . !!Just when dealers, record companies andsome artists were saying that records, toaid worthy causes, had run their course, arash of new ones came into the picture. No one has anything against good causes, but this industry seems to suffer fromoverkill. There must be other ways for theindustry to help the needy. By the way,the record industry in Canada hasn't beena slacker when it comes to charities. (EC:Hear! Hear!)

Take the poster out first . . . !!!A major label was so anxious to get theirnew, fast -breaking Cancon package out tothe press they left a beautiful poster in theLP package . . . . and bored it as a promopiece. The result was 4 neatly roundedholes through the face of this establishedrock star. No need to mention any names.

Classifieds are for everyone . . . !!!If you take a look at our classified sectionthis week, you will notice the wide varietyof opportunities being offered. This weekwe have a record store for sale, a job witha record label for a bookkeeper, an oppor-tunity for someone with production capa-bilities to take on a full time lecturingjob at Fanshawe. (EC: Sounds like a hint!!)

A roast extraordinaire coming up???They're already talking about a roast inSeptember that will be the roast of all

Bryan Adams hits the top in U.S.For the doombeaters and doubters whohave been selling Cancon short for years, comes news that Bryan Adams hits thetop of the U.S. trade charts this week.with Heaven, his A&M single. The lastCanadian to hit this magic number wasAnne Murray in 1978 for her single, YouNeeded Me. Nick Gilder hit No. 1 a weekearlier with Hot Child In The City, butGilder was actually born in Britain, Ironi-cally, both Adams and Gilder were singersfor Sweeney Todd on Roxy Roller. Gilderaside, the last Canadian -born male to hitthe top spot was Andy Kim (now BaronLongfellow) in 1975 with Rock Me Gently. The last Canadian group to reach the No. 1spot was BTO with You Ain't Seen Nothin'Yet . . . that was in 1974. BTO, oddlyenough, were managed by Bruce Allen atthe time . . . and he manages Adams, amongmany others.

Do we get phone calls? Are we right on?We get plaudits and praise for our commentsabout that bunch of outsiders no one likes. We thought we were the only ones, but wehave developed quite a following. Strangehow great minds think alike and how manypeople out there have changed their minds!!(EC: Who could he mean?)

Several names gueston Beach Boys LPStevie Wonder, Ringo Starr, Gary Mooreand Roy Hay of Culture Club are amongseveral name artists who made guest ap-pearances on the Beach Boys' new self -titled LP, released on the Caribou label.

Produced by Steve Levine (Culture Club),the album marks the band's first studioproject in 5 years, and contains 4 new BrianWilson compositions, a Stevie Wonderpenning of I Do Love You, plus PassingFriend, written by Boy George.

Getcha Back, the first single taken fromthe album has moved quickly up the RPM100 singles survey, cracking the Top 50after only 2 weeks of charting.

The Beach Boys: Brian Wilson, MikeLove, Carl Wilson, and Al Jardine, arejoined by Bruce Johnston, often referredto as "the 6th Beach Boy". It was Johnstonwho appeared for Brian Wilson when thelatter was unable to make some dates.

Well . .. the BBM's are out once again!!There's glasses tinkling at some radiostations . . . and teeth gnashing (in private)at others with the release of the latestBBM spring ratings. It's easy to get nosesout of joint when reporting on who gotthe big numbers, so we prefer to stayaway from that area of contention. Itall depends on how you interpret theresults and most station managers put ona happy face, even if they're on the bottomof the heap. There are no losers, just askthe guy at the bottom.

Better he should have stayed home!Rock stars can influence their concertaudiences, but taking on the legal systemcan have disastrous results. All a judge hasto do is look at one of these rock spokes-persons and he gets his establishment backup, but when he's told his judiciary systemis archaic clang goes the door!!!

CBS has another diamond . . . !!!Is retail soft? It might be for some labels, but CBS continues its roll and just as wego to press, news breaks that they haveanother diamond star . . . . that's onemillion units sold. The big prize goes toBruce Springsteen for Born In The USA,which was released one year ago. Out ofthat LP came Dancing In The Dark, CoverMe, Born In The USA, I'm On Fire, and hiscurrent single, Glory Days. There aren'ttoo many diamond winners, and CBShas had only 2 others: Meat Loaf andMichael Jackson. Maybe it was Spring-steen's highly publicized marriage thatbrought him over the top.

It's all in the wrapping . . . !!!Nash The Slash is taking on the giantPepsi Cola company for what the state-ment of claim to the Ontario SupremeCourt claims "misappropriation of hislikeness, personality and identity". Thisone has been on the burner for some time, but now Nash is serious and he's asking for$1 million in damanges. Apparently PepsiCola used a Nash The Slash lookalike ona Pepsi TV' commercial which featuredRough Trade. at CBS

it's way to double platinum. The LP has just been released in the States while Gowan is

set to tour the U.S. opening for Tears For Fears. All indications are that he will equal

the success he has attained in Canada in the U.S.

Other releases to watch for in the next few weeks Jeff Beck's Flash, Carly

Simon's Carly, Weird Al Yankovic's Dare To Be Stupid(with his version of Like A

Virgin retitled Like A Surgeon), Romantics' Rhythm Romance, Ozzy Osbourne's Ult-

imate Sin, Stevie Ray Vaughan's Soul To Soul, and, featuring 2 new tracks, Billy Joel's Greatest Hits.

CRTC task force on French -language pop

The CRTC has announced the formation of a "task force" on French -language popular

music that would include "the participation of the broadcast, recording, and entertain-

ment industries, as well as performers, government officials and other experts in

the field." This follows requests from French -lan-

guage broadcasters for a reduction in the level of French -language vocal music re-

quired by the CRTC - now 65% of total

music played. The broadcasters argue that production of French -language records has decreased, particularly in the areas of "rock

- oriented and dance music." There are also reports that influential

French -language Tory members are con- cerned with the lack of exposure being

given to French -language records and that a move is underway to influence the CRTC

to increase, rather than reduce the per- centage of French -language recordings,

generally.

The staff of the Toronto-Bayview Regional Cancer Centre (billing themselves as the

Toronto-Bayview Regional Cancer Centre Singers) have recorded If We Try, a song released as a single to help finance a re-

search facility at the centre, located at Sunnybrook Medical Centre in Toronto.

The song was penned and produced by Iscoe, spouse of cancer spe-

cialist Dr. Neill Iscoe. The vocal arrangements for the session

were done by Cynthia Allen -Campbell, a unit coordinator and part-time music

teacher. Studio space was provided, free of charge, by Andy Thompson of Northum-

berland Studio in Campbellford, Ont. The single, carrying a price tag of $5.00,

is available at several Toronto and area locations including Sam The Record Man's

downtown store and participating Sam's outlets, Song and Script, Records On Wheels, and the centre which is located

on Bayview Avenue.

Honeymoon Suite present WEA platinum album to MuchMusic host Michael Williams

for his effort in breaking the group's album.

Johnny's daughter has already made gainsup the charts with her new single, I Don'tKnow Why You Don't Want Me, includedhere and written by herself and producerhubby Rodney Crowell. Country is obviouslythe target but the crossover action willhappen all by itself. Rosanne wrote 8 ofthe selections here, but will probably bemore successful with Tom Petty's NeverBe You, and John Hiatt's Pink Bedroom, both key tracks.

FC-39463-H

- Country/Pop

Johnny's daughter has already made gains up the charts with her new single, I Don't

Know Why You Don't Want Me, included here and written by herself and producer

hubby Rodney Crowell. Country is obviously the target but the crossover action will

happen all by itself. Rosanne wrote 8 of the selections here, but will probably be

more successful with Tom Petty's Never Be You, and John Hiatt's Pink Bedroom,

both key tracks.

SOUTHERN PACIFIC Country Southern Pacific

- Warner Bros

- 92-52061-P

A new country band featuring 2 former Doobie Bros., guitarist John McFee and

drummer. Keith Knudsen. Debut single, Someone's Gonna Love Me Tonight has

already impressed country programmers and is making moves up the RPM Country 60.

Key are Tom Petty's Thing About You, a duet between Tim Goodman and Emmylou

Harris, and a rather surprising but delightful version of Foreigner's Luanne.

"Nashville dance - rockin' country music".

The Rana label is owned by Fred Coch of Nelson, a highly -respected promoter of country music.

New Lord single shipping Latest from the Kansas -based Comstock

label is Anne Lord's new single, Stars In My Eyes, billed as a "Special Summer

Release". The Vancouver -based Lord and her husband Roger, co -wrote the single

which follows Anne's big win this year in the Britsh Columbia Country Music Awards. She was voted Female Vocalist and Record

Performer of The Year, and her Endlessly LP won the Album of The Year Award.

Anne is the only Canadian country artist on an independent label to put 5 consecutive

records into the U.S. Top 100 charts, and is

now being accepted throughout the U.K. and Europe. The new Lord single is being

promoted from Comstock's Kansas City headquarters by Marsha Puhl.

Ruth Ann splits management firm In Tune Management & Consulting of

Guelph, Ontario, has announced that they and Ruth Ann have "mutually agreed to

terminate the management agreement in existence between the two parties."

Ellis solos on Davisville Wray Ellis, known for several years as a

studio session musician for many recording artists, makes his solo debut on the Davis-

ville label. The single, Take A Chance, a Cyril Rawson original, was produced at

Nashville's Chelsea Studio by Tony Migliore. The latter is also featured on keyboards.

Wray's first road experience was with Rainbow Wind, a Southern rock band.

After a couple of years of touring, he was asked to play bass for Cliff Edwards, and went on to perform with several name

Cancon acts including Eddie Eastman, Glory -Anne Carriere, Ronnie Prophet, Marie

Bottrell, and Kelita Haverland. The Davis- ville label is based in Toronto.

Cadton's raise funds for tornado victims

The Carlton Showband were recently schedu- led for a concert in Barrie, Ontario (June 1), the day after a devastating tornado ripped

through the area. The concert became a "special event" drawing a sold out crowd

to the city's Dunlop Arena.

'What was to have been a normal con- cert situation for us turned out to be a

fund raiser for the victims of the devastat- ing tornado," said group manager Scoot

Irwin. 'We put a cardboard box onstage and solicted donations from the audience," he

continued. "We deposited our entire fee from the engagement and when all was

tallied, we had raised over $12,000."

The 7 -piece band, now in its 21st year, is preparing a swing through Western Canada,

which will bring them into Brooks, Alberta (July 5), Kyle (6), Calgary (7-11) for the

Stampede, Moose Jaw (12), Nanton (16), and Red Deer (18-20).

Their new album, Reflections, will be released on the ESP label. A single, Fields

Of Athenry, is scheduled for a July release.
