GETTING STARTED

Find a venue – you could host it at a local pub, community space like a church hall or in your workplace.

Pick a date – in November to host your quiz for Cancer Research UK.

Promote it – there are so many ways you can spread the word:

• Posters – you can use our poster or make your own.

• Email – we have some templates on our website you might find useful.

• Fundraising page – setting up a JustGiving page is a great way to collect registration fees and promote your quiz by sharing the link with your networks.

• Social media – use your social media pages to tell everyone and change your profile and cover photos to our templates on our website.

Source a prize for the winning team – approach local businesses or the venue for prizes and raffle gifts. Free drinks and meals at local restaurants are normally popular.

Get a PA and microphone – your venue might have one and it makes it easier when comparing your event.

? THE QUIZ QUESTIONS

Choose your questions. Our pack has rounds you can choose depending on the interest of your audience. We recommend you choose between 6 and 8 rounds.

You can come up with your own questions if you like, maybe a local round or something that you know will interest your audience. We recommend 8–10 questions in a round.

ON THE DAY

A suggested donation to enter is the easiest way to fundraise. An example being £5 per person or £20 for a team of 5.

Ensure someone has collected everyone’s entry donation and you have checked that teams have everything they need such as pens and answer sheets.

Set the rules

• Remind your audience that mobile phones are not allowed and points will be deducted if they are seen using their mobile phone.

• You are the boss and the quizmaster’s decision is final.

Hosting the quiz – The quizmaster should read out each question twice and ask if anyone would like any questions repeated at the end of a round. At the end of the quiz ask teams to swap papers, and then read the answers out so they can mark each other’s scores. When the papers are handed back, count down to the highest possible score to find out who the winning team is. Make sure you have prepared or picked one of our tie-breaker questions in-case there are more than one winning team.

Boost your fundraising – you can boost your fundraising by running activities in the break:

• Raffle – source prizes from local businesses and sell raffle tickets. £5 a strip can really make a difference to your fundraising total.

• Crisp flavour competition – buy some interesting flavour crisps, give them out and have a round of guessing the flavours.

• Charge a ‘fine’ for anyone caught using their phone during the quiz.

• Ask your employer if they can match the amount raised in the quiz.

AFTER THE QUIZ

Thank everyone who attended or supported you, including the venue.

Count up your donations and send in the money. You can either pay your money in online using your JustGiving account if you have set one up, or via our Online Donation form which can be found by visiting cruk.org/quiz, or alternatively you can post a cheque along with your Donation Form in your pack – full details can be found on the form.

Share some of your photos with us on Facebook or Twitter! @cr_uk

Cancer Research UK would like to thank the British Quiz Association who have generously written and verified all questions.
