A Linoprint C751 digital press has arrived in Mayfair and joining it at the prestigious address is a Suprasetter A52 CtP device and a Polar 66, all supplied by Heidelberg. Mount Street Printers means business.

The company, which operates from premises in Mount Street, is a Royal Warrant holder. The company offers a die-stamping, thermography and litho service and is now adding digital to enable it to provide short run work cost effectively. Being competitive remains a priority for the 31 year old business.

Peter Cain, managing director of Mount Street Printers, explains: “We will retain our GTO for runs of over 1,000 but for the very short run jobs the set up time is too slow. We needed a digital press. We looked quite widely but found many of the digital presses outputting colour little different to a photocopier. The Linoprint toner is much better, more like litho, and our operators have been

blown away by the quality it is producing.”The investment in CtP with the Suprasetter A 52

reflects the company’s belief that litho still has a place. Mr Cain believes the litho digital split will be about 50-50 but that over time there could be a migration towards digital. This new device will supercede two machines, a metal and a polyester

platemaker, although one might be retained as back up.

The company’s second Polar 66 will arrive in the new few weeks. The company has had 30 years experience with Polar guillotines and was confident in buying another. This guillotine will handle both litho and digital work. All the equipment purchased will work flexible days, mainly Monday to Friday with overtime when demand requires it.heidelberg uK 0844 892 2010mount street Printers 020 7409 0303.

Victoria Pendleton Helps Launch Memjet Technology

Top Olympic cyclist, Victoria Pendleton, has helped AMS to promote their new superfast equipment at the launch event of a new ink technology called Memjet.

AMS, the independent supplier of mailing equipment and label printers, has a new printer range that uses Memjet technology. This technology is unique in the fact that a fixed print head spans the full width of a page (page wide array), enabling extremely fast print speeds - up to of 3,600 A4 sheets per hour. This is much faster than conventional inkjet printers and akin to laser print speeds. But, unlike laser printing, Memjet is a full colour photo quality print technology.

Memjet technology was amply demonstrated by Victoria Pendleton who was on hand at the launch called ‘Speed Wins’ on 16th October at Paramount, Centre Point, London to be photographed with her Olympics 2012 medals. Once the photo was taken Victoria was able to print out a full photo quality A4 copy of the image and sign it, all in a matter of seconds.

AMS’s range of printers that use Memjet technology include the M1 Envelope printer, the Speedstar and the Labelmaxer colour label printers. www.ams-gb.com

Sign Force in Norwich’s impressive arsenal of Roland DG printing and print and cut technology has helped the company establish itself as one of the South’s premier trade suppliers of display graphics.

Its two SolJet Pro III XJ-740 printers, a SolJet Pro III XC-540 printer/cutter and a VersaCAMM SP-540i are employed daily to produce vehicle graphics, roll-up/pop-up displays, canvases, exhibition signage and banners, plus stickers and decals by the thousands. And Roland’s Eco-Sol Max ink delivers Sign Force supreme quality and performance that it can rely on time and again.

Sign Force Managing Director, Justin Watts, believes that using genuine Eco-Sol Max inks with his Roland wide format printers has ensured a continuously high standard of vibrant, durable prints that in turn has helped him secure a high level of repeat business.

“As a trade supplier, we have to deliver the best quality at all times. We’re dealing with customers who know exactly what to look for so everything has to be spot on,” said Justin in the latest video instalment of Roland’s national tour of proud Roland users.

During his more than six years as a Roland customer, Justin has been approached many times by suppliers of third party inks but considers the risk of a sub-standard product failing later down the line not worth taking.

“We’re loyal to Roland and want to ensure we do everything possible to provide a high quality and reliable service to customers. We get fantastic peace of mind from the Gold RolandCare warranty coverage and, as third party inks would jeopardise this, it’s a false economy to risk it for short term gain.”

Eco-Sol Max is a remarkable innovation in ink technology, offering fast drying time, high density, wide colour gamut, rugged scratch resistance, low cost per square metre, broad coated and uncoated media support and is virtually odourless. Eco-Sol Max comes in CMYK+Lc+Lm+Mt+W colours and is water and UV resistant up to three years outdoors for CMYK graphics, up to one year outdoors for white ink and one to three years outdoors for metallic silver ink.

“We sell branded materials and we use branded materials so we like to be associated with the very best in the market, and Roland certainly fits the criteria,” said Justin.

“In line with this we chose the Eco-Sol Max inks purely because you know that if you’re buying products from Roland it’s going to be consistently high

quality and there’s going to be a good, reliable supply chain.”Sign Force typically runs its Roland machines on the high quality, lower

speed setting in order to maximise the durability of the graphics produced, but the SolJet Pro III XJ-740 will print graphics for almost any application at speeds of more than 40m²/hour.

“Customers often comment on the durability and quality of the prints, which plays a huge part in securing the repeat business that has been critical to our success,” said Justin.

Throughout his experience with Roland, Justin and his team have found its technology easy to use. Another important factor in Sign Force’s partnership with Roland is the Roland Academy training facility at Walsall College, where Justin has sent a number of employees.

“As well as showing the correct and efficient use of the hardware they encourage you to use your imagination and to try different media and applications. This is something that as a business we’ve definitely benefitted from,” he said. for more information about sign force visit www.signforce.co.uk or call 01603 411573. for further details on roland’s eco-sol max ink visitwww.rolanddg.co.uk/ecosolmax

MorgAnA Systems has pronounced the Graph Expo show in Chicago, USA was a huge success with orders taken on the stand approaching three figures in terms of machine numbers.

Commenting on the success of the show, Quen Baum, Managing Director of Morgana, said: “We actually did have some doubts with regard to showing at Graph Expo this year: I am glad we did decide to make the investment. It has paid off handsomely for us, with record orders for Morgana at a Graph Expo. I was so impressed that I have already booked again for next year!

“Our booth was very busy at all times; we were even busy on the Sunday afternoon following the Chicago marathon. Generally visitors seemed a lot more upbeat and were there to buy, not just to look.

“Top of the list for visitors was the Morgana DigiFold Pro followed closely by the CardXtra Plus and the AutoCreaser Pro products: these three products accounted for some 70% of the orders taken.”

Adding his thoughts regarding this year’s show,

Alan Oppenheim, North American Manager for Morgana, said: “Other

highlights of our Graph Expo 2012 exhibit included

the DocuMaster

MFC booklet making system, being shown alongside the recently upgraded DocuMaster Pro for the first time in US. Our customers were able to see

these products in action, and were very impressed with what they saw. I am

convinced that our unit order total for Graph Expo will break the hundred mark once we have completed our follow up visits.”

Morgana were able to show the latest versions of their Pro range of creasers and folders shown at drupa 2012, including the DigiFold Pro creasing and folding machine and the DocuMaster Pro booklet making system. The star of the show, however, was the entry level DigiBook 150 PUR perfect binding machine – a product that Morgana launched at drupa. “There is a definite demand for short run, high quality binding that most other suppliers seem unable to meet,” said Mr Baum. “The interest in this machine both in Düsseldorf and at Graph Expo tells us that this is the right product at the right time.”www.morgana.co.uk

in the light of recent Ofgem warning of future power cuts, a Lancashire based company could have the solution to keep Britain switched on.

UK Powertech Ltd, specialists in industrial and commercial batteries, has used their expertise to design a range of compact energy storage devices specifically for small businesses and homes. Called The BlackCurrent, it is a safe, easy to install emergency power pack to bridge the energy gap when the power is down.

The BlackCurrent works in a similar way to emergency back up systems used by hospitals and banks where maintaining electricity is critical. The unit can either be plugged into an ordinary electric socket and equipment can be plugged directly into it, or connected into the mains to create an emergency circuit which can feed critical equipment. The BlackCurrent stores electricity till it detects a break in the power when it seamlessly takes over power demands be it for lights, commercial IT equipment, medical equipment etc. for a couple of hours until the main power is restored.

Extensive research showed UK Powertech that there was nothing available for the smaller end user to act as a simple back up system that would store enough power for all the electronic equipment needed to keep businesses and homes going.

Mark Rigby, UK Powertech’s Managing Director, like others involved in the energy business has been aware for some time that small businesses and households were not adequately prepared for regular power cuts.

“As we start to decommission 25% of our old power stations by 2015 and lose the equivalent amount of energy, power cuts are inevitable. This energy gap, combined with the consumer’s insatiable appetite energy consuming technology, can only have a negative impact on future power supplies.”The basic size Blackcurrent retails at £850 + VaT +shipping costs and can be ordered from uKPowertech ltd, countess street, ashton-under-lyne, lancs ol6 6ue Tel: 0161-343-7606. information on larger units available and tailor made units is also available on request.

The designers and manufacturers have gone from strength to strength. Since Vivid started to design their own systems they have quickly become market leaders.

Martin Evans, Managing Director said “Over the past 25 years we have seen a lot of changes in the finishing industry and one of the reasons behind our success has been keeping one step ahead of the competition. We have listened to what our customers want and developed systems to fulfill their needs.”

PrintiT! makes a big impact!THE PrintIT! competition for schools is now in its eighth year, and continues to increase the profile of careers in the printing industry, amongst talented young people.

The number of young people who would now consider a career in the print and packaging

industry has quadrupled as a result of the hard work of the schools and print companies who support young people through the programme each year. The latest student survey also shows that PrintIT! has a massive impact on young peoples’ knowledge of the print industry – 74% of last year’s entrants felt they were well informed about printing after the competition compared to just 4% before. These positive figures show the impact that is made through the PrintIT! programme and provides a timely boost as the industry prepares itself for this year’s competition.

“We are very proud of PrintIT! and the impact it is having. Raising awareness of careers in the industry amongst young people is key to the future of this vital manufacturing sector in the UK” explained Ian Aspley, General Manager, Proskills UK.

PrintIT! Is an annual competition, managed by Proskills UK, in which students design and plan a print based campaign on behalf of Fairtrade. More than 120,000 young people have taken part in the programme since 2007, gaining an understanding of sustainability issues and of the range of careers available in the modern, high technology print, paper and packaging industries. Each student submits a project to the national PrintIT! competition which culminates each year in a prestigious awards ceremony where all the finalists, industry figures and print professionals come together to celebrate the students achievements. A key element of the programme is the “twinning” process, where schools form links to local companies, helping students to gain an insight into the practical side of the print, paper, and packaging industries.

“As an industry, it’s only through engaging with schools, exciting these young people and showing them what dynamic and creative industries print and paper are, that we will attract the best talent. PrintIT! Is a hugely important programme for our future and every print related business and Paper Company needs to get involved.” Tony Lock, PrintIT! Chairman and Managing Director, Duplo UK.if you would like to find out more about twinning with schools in your local area, or would just like more information about the PrintiT! competition, please contact the schools into industry Team on [email protected] or on 01235 833844.

For print providers who want to produce documents quickly, with sharp image quality and on a variety of paper sizes and types the new Xerox Nuvera 157 EA Production System and Nuvera 314 EA Perfecting Production System will deliver.

Fast, flexible black and white production - The Nuvera systems are the most productive cut sheet production black and white devices on the market, with speeds of 157 images per minute and 314 images per minute respectively. Users can opt for the single engine system or the highly productive dual engine system to run duplexed pages twice as fast.

A new production stacker unloads the finished print jobs while the system is still operating. The waist height and ergo-friendly stacker permits larger capacity jobs to be printed without the need for manual intervention. An optional stack cart makes moving volumes of paper around the print shop easier.

The systems can also accommodate a range of paper weights without reducing print speed – a productivity gain for users. Sheet sizes up to 320 mm x 490 mm allow more images to be printed per page – a cost saving for users.

“Print providers can expect a healthy return on their investment with every application produced on these new devices.” said Howard Witt, European business manager, Production Printing, Xerox Europe, “The Xerox Nuvera 157 EA Production System and Nuvera 314 EA Perfecting Production System offer outstanding black and white imaging quality, productivity, modularity and a wide range of finishing options.”

Expanded features to entire Nuvera line - In addition to the production stacker and the larger sheet size capability, new features to the entire Nuvera portfolio include:• Updates to Xerox FreeFlow Print Server: new security standards, user

interface enhancements and improvements to processing TIFF images on selected mainframe data streams.

• The recently announced Xerox IntegratedPLUS Finishing Solution for Booklets takes jobs from input to finished output with virtually no operator involvement. A touchless workflow in prepress operations increases uptime by removing the need for manual prepress and finisher setup – booklet jobs are pre-flighted and imposed according to the requirements of each unique job. Also, in-line finishing devices can be shared with multiple printers in a shop, maximising productivity and flexibility. Available on all Nuvera systems installed after October 2009.

• Production Information Management System: tracks performance information, such as machine status and productivity metrics, allowing operators to manage productivity on multiple Xerox presses, in real time, regardless of location (optional feature).

The Xerox Nuvera 157EA Production System and Nuvera 314EA Perfecting Production System are available immediately for order taking and installation. The devices are available through Xerox’s direct sales force, resellers and concessionaires.www.xerox.com

THEMAgicToucH, global pioneers of the digital image transfer process for the past 20 years, announce the arrival of yet another significant milestone for the garment decoration and promotional gift industry.

Introducing the exclusive new OKI C711WT Colour-Plus White LED printer with white toner added to the CMY colour process. This unique innovation with the new toner delivers very good opacity and therefore a very high ‘White’ factor for non-fabric hard surface applications such as folders, mugs, binders, leather and PU surface products as well as garments and textiles.

In conjunction with the release of the new printer, TheMagicTouch has upgraded their award winning WoW7.2 transfer media to seamlessly fit the new white toner technology. Now reduced to a simple two step process the new WoW7.5 in conjunction with the C711WT becomes the perfect, affordable, solution for all garment decoration regardless of fabric colour or type, without any cutting or weeding involved. With a minimum application temperature as low as 110°C/230°F it perfectly overcomes the potential scorching mark of a heat press on the new popular ‘high tech’ performance fabrics and garments.

“We will deliver the printer with an added value beyond the factory standard” says Jim Nicol, Managing Director of TheMagicTouch in the UK. He added “Using our unique print utility software “SpaceControl” with the C711WT enables the user to print ‘white-only’ with the click of a button. Most important, the SpaceControl software will allow total control over the white toner i.e. where and how much is printed.”

The new white toner also extends a new lease of life to existing transfer papers allowing the decoration of any colour materials, products and substrates. Now CPM papers can decorate dark colour mugs, diaries, leather, PU products, phone and gadget covers, binders and various types of folders with ‘white’ as the extra colour included in the design. New ‘white’ also extends to the tattoo paper for skin and nail decoration as well as the CL media stock for the production of stickers and decals with opaque full colour definition for the sign industry.

The C711WT with the “SpaceControl” print utility software will be available for delivery in October and priced at £1995.00. Of course, the printer is fully compatible with all MagicTouch transfer papers and traditional applications by simply unchecking the ‘Print White’ box in SpaceControl or select ‘white off’ in the printer driver.for further information contact www.themagictouch.co.uk

cAnon has launched five new large format printers for the graphic arts markets. The new 24” to 60”, 8 colour and 12 colour devices have been equipped with a host of new features to deliver superior image quality, productivity and usability.

All the new models use LUCIA EX inks, making Canon the only company to use a singular ink set across an entire large format range, and ‘hot swap’ technology. The ink set provides a wider colour gamut, more expressive blacks, better scratch resistance and a more stable colour for optimum image quality to ensure absolute consistency between devices. The ‘hot swap’ technology gives the ability to replace ink whilst printing, providing uninterrupted production and reduced down time.

The 12 colour, 24” imagePROGRAF iPF6400 and iPF6450 are replacing the iPF6300 and iPF6350 models. The new optional spectrophotometer with the imagePROGRAF iPF6450 enables precise, highly stable and consistent colour that has a switchable UV filter to give users much greater flexibility with their range of media.

Calibration Link allows the spectrophotometer to provide a unified solution to all the 12 colour large format printers launched by Canon in 2012. Needing only to be installed on the iPF6450 at one location, users can centrally control the colour management of multiple imagePROGRAF units installed in other sites, optimising output and ensuring uniformity of colour.

The imagePROGRAF range is further enhanced by the 44” imagePROGRAF iPF8400, a 12 colour printer, which replaces the iPF8300 that comes with an increased internal HDD of 250GB and a faster throughput. Also launching are the 60” imagePROGRAF iPF9400 and the imagePF9400S models, 12 colour and 8 colour respectively. Overall image quality is improved by using LUCIA-EX inks which provide approximately 20% wider colour gamut and the fast printing

speed will appeal to the photographic, fine arts and in-house signage markets. The iPF9400S’s improved internal technology means less passes are needed

when printing for fast production (approximately 1.5 times faster than the previous iPF9000S). The iPF9400S comes with bright colour reproduction and an updated print head ink sequence, to enable the printer to increase speed while printing — making it ideal for poster production.

Canon has also developed the Photoshop Plug-In to include a layout function with automated size adjustment, ideal for gallery wraps. In addition, the accounting, media configuration and calibration software, which is bundled with the new models, has been upgraded to give users the flexibility and usability to create, monitor and deliver all of their printing jobs to exact specifications.for more information visit: www.canon-europe.com.

dSAlES distributor for the Develop range of multifunctional copier/printers has launched two new A3 colour multifunctional (MFP) print systems, the ineo+ 454 and the ineo+554. These devices are equipped with a high resolution, nine inch, full colour touch screen as standard, ideal for previewing, altering and refining prints. The operating system for these devices has been designed to be simple and intuitive, much like a tablet PC, and features drag and drop functionality and an array of options which allow users to customise menus for their individual requirements.

The ineo+ 454/554 boast print speeds of 45 and 55 pages per minute respectively in either colour or black and white, and a razor sharp resolution of 1,200 dpi ensures these devices combine speed with high quality. The ineo+ 454/554 also

support a broad range of media including overhead transparencies and thick card up to 300 gsm, processing paper formats from A6 to A3+ (SRA3), other user defined formats, and even banners of up to 1.2 metres in length.

Commenting on the launch of the ineo+ 454/554 Jonathan Whitworth, Managing Director of DSales (UK) said, “The ineo+ 454 and 554 are versatile, eco-friendly and economical multifunctional devices that deliver high quality output fast. These machines are keenly priced

and perfect for deployment as a multifunctional departmental device or as an all rounder for businesses such as copy shops, advertising agencies and graphic design studios.”

When scanning the ineo+ 454/554 convert documents to either .pptx files or PDF files as standard, and are available with a choice of scanner type. These devices will also perfectly complement Develop’s award winning store+find, an optional document management solution which provides the ability to capture and archive documents electronically.

The ineo+ 454/554 are certified to the computer security standard ISO 15408 EAL 3 and come with various data security features, such as hard disk encryption and, when needed, data erasure. Equipped with security features such as IPsec, S/MIME e-mail encryption and IP filtering, the ineo+ 454/554 ensure that every form of

communication or document transfer is undertaken securely. Access to documents and other stored data can be restricted by means of authentication technology such as PINs, biometric finger vein scanning or contactless smart cards.

The ineo+ 454/554 have also been carefully calibrated to reduce operating costs and carbon footprint. Automatic deletion of blank pages avoids unnecessary copying and wasted paper and the various energy saving functions include the newly developed LED scanner exposure technology; an operating mode that only uses 0.5 W; and the dynamic Eco Timer that adapts the system’s active phases to its actual operating periods. The new ineo+ systems also conform to Blue Angel and Energy Star certified international eco standards.www.dsales.eu

FAVini arrived at the Luxepack exhibition in Monaco with a big bang – or perhaps we mean squeeze - for the launch of CRUSH, a completely new paper dedicated to the packaging industry.

CRUSH stands apart from the market as being the first and only range paper made with by-products from organic products replacing as much as 15% of traditional wood pulps

After hundreds of hours of research and fine tuning, Favini has managed to transform process residues from corn, citrus and kiwi fruits, olives, almonds, hazelnuts and coffee beans into extraordinary paper in high fashion colours inspired by nature – and each with a distinct touch created by the differences between the types of material.

CRUSH brings new life to residues from organic products that would normally be processed as fillers in animal food and fertilisers or simply dumped in landfill. Using Favini’s unique patented capabilities these by-products are reborn as a new raw material for making high quality paper. At a time of increasing resource scarcity, using these materials relieves pressure on forest resources and gives them an extended life of up to five time - this being the typical number of times a high quality paper is recycled.

In line with Favini’s commitment to support the environment, this new paper is FSC certified, made with 100% green energy (the electricity is generated in Favini ’s own hydroelectric plant) and contains 30% post-

consumer recycled fibre.Development of this new range of ecological paper is the natural

progression of Favini’s know how from the production of Shiro Alga Carta, the patented paper that Favini manufactures using the excess seaweed growing in endangered lagoon environments.

For brand owners, packaging a product using CRUSH provides a new approach to the increasingly eco sensitive consumer, with a special story combining with an on trend fashion pallet and a set of papers with unique touch. For sophisticated and luxurious packaging, Crush gives real stand out power.

Rest assured that CRUSH also does the simple things well - optimal levels of performance in printing and other processes, making CRUSH ideal for various applications - shopping bags, labels, packaging, and any variety of creative communications

CRUSH comes in seven colors associated with each of the seven raw materials: Corn, Citrus, Kiwi, Olive, Almond, Hazelnut and Coffee. There are 4 grammages optimised for packaging – 120, 200, 250, 350.

The production process and the product are protected by European patent. In addition to the items offered in the range, Favini is ready to collaborate with anybody who wishes to create a paper from their unusual materials. www.favini.com

lEArning all about point-of-sale creation, from start to finish, is the key driver behind CMYUK’s retail print production utopia which is taking place between 19 November and 14 December in St Albans, Hertfordshire. This highly innovative series of open days provides the unique opportunity to view the latest wide format printing and finishing solutions from EFI VUTEk and Zünd, complemented by materials from Antalis McNaughton and framing systems from Spirit Displays.

Going far deeper than the average event or trade show, the CMYUK open days are designed to show attendees, in detail, how to benefit from creating the most highly efficient integrated production environment. Technical and practical demonstrations will cover everything from design and colour handling, through print and cut workflows, and material handling, all leading to high quality point-of-sale and retail applications.

As the UK distributor for EFI VUTEk printers and a Premier Solution Integrator for Zünd professional finishing solutions, CMYUK Digital is holding its open days to respond to the rapidly growing demand for wide format digital print in the display and retail graphics’ sectors. The company’s consultancy expertise enables it to offer the best combination of commercial production solutions, complemented by its alliance with Antalis McNaughton for expert colour matching across different substrates and application types.

Taking the stage are the latest technological advances in printing and cutting, with the new EFI VUTEk QS2 Pro UV-curable solution making its UK début at the event. This latest platform incorporates true greyscale print quality, six colours plus white and sophisticated colour consistency and accuracy. The newest Zünd digital cutting systems are also on show, represented by the G3 for high volumes and the S3 entry level product. Both will be demonstrating their fast precision capabilities using the latest Cut Centre software.

Visitors to the CMYUK open days will learn about all workflow elements for full point-of-sale production from design to final in-store product, and how to match accurately and consistently the colour expectations of customers.

There is also the opportunity to discover how to streamline throughput, from file creation and colour control, through to fully integrated print and cut capabilities, showing the full potential of multi-job nesting and step and repeat to optimise material usage and minimise waste.

This retail print production utopia concentrates on the latest software, printer and cutter technology, showing how to combine

all the associated technologies used for the production of high quality, consistent point-of-sale and display applications. Visitors will learn every process needed to create and complete ready to ship graphics, with real life FSDUs (free standing display units) being produced in real time during the presentations.

“No one interested in the point-of-sale production environment can afford to miss this important series of open days as it is the unique opportunity

for learning about all the processes essential for creating innovative, high quality graphics,” states CMYUK Digital’s Robin East. “Printing and finishing technologies have progressed radically during the past five years, with particular emphasis on

THE End oF October saw the launch of Windows 8 which despite a billion pound advertising campaign, seemed to be greeted with

little enthusiasm or excitement by its intended audience. Indeed only an irritating childish jingle seemed to be the most memorable feature. There was nothing we hadn’t seen before — the touch screen, the so-called user friendly interface. All designed to make the computing experience that much easier for the average consumer. But we have seen all this before, on phones and tablets that have now become common usage in the last five years. Other names have broken the ground Microsoft now treads. So hardly surprising the latest offering might have been heralded with a fanfare but greeted with a collective yawn.

There is a significance for us though, which is why I digress from the nominal theme of this column to discuss operating systems instead of digital imaging and its related software. All are inevitably linked as much as spanners are needed to tackle nuts and bolts. The operating system is the vehicle upon which everything we now rely on runs, and for the last decade that has been dominated by Windows XP.

Not only the computers we use, but the printers and many other devices run upon a basic XP platform. It has proved very successful, mostly because of its stability, and its ability to adapt to different drivers. But that reliability was only built on lessons learnt from previous offerings from the initial shakey Windows 95 to Windows 98 which became popular in the industry for many years, through Millenium and 2000. All of that experience, good and bad, enabled Microsoft to develop, partly at its customer’s expense, software that was suitable for service in the home and the office.

So successful was it that it took seventy per cent of the PC market — not just the personal computer and small business, but big business, banks and government. XP’s familiar face greeted the start-up of a large part of the world’s desktops.

But things move on, nothing stays still in the digital economy, and what can seem state of the art one year can be in the dustbin the next. So an operating system designed ten years ago is virtually antique. You can update it and patch it, but eventually it runs over and out of its use by date.

Much like and old car, it gets harder to repair as parts become more expensive to source as they are no longer on the shelf, and the likelihood is that it will only delay the eventual demise and prolong the agony.

Microsoft did extend XP’s life with Service Packs, perhaps too successfully for its own interests. It wasn’t helped by the fact that the much anticipated replacement, Vista, was a proverbial dog’s dinner and businesses avoided it

like the plague. There were just too many performance and compatibility issues, and no busy working firm can afford to be hamstrung by software that doesn’t do what it says on the tin! Updating software is one thing, but if you have to update or replace hardware and other equipment, it’s a much bigger and more expensive picture.

And here comes the problem both for small and big business — the investment in hardware over ten years is considerably more than that of software, and is generally done gradually, progressively when need arises.

But if new software means new hardware, that is not an easy option at any time, and especially in times of recession. Just as it’s not going to work shoe-horning a modern engine into an old car, dropping new software into an old computer system is not going to work, or at least without dramatically affecting performance.

Things have moved on in ten years and the computing power of all devices from mobile phones to laptops has increased enormously. Current and future software not only takes advantage of that, but relies upon it to function properly.

Microsoft has introduced Windows 8 — which is reckoned to be the most radical overhaul of its operating system since the ground breaking introduction of Windows 95 way back in the last century — to try and claw back the ground people like Apple have pulled from under its feet. Phones and tablets have reached users that desktops and laptops could not. They have made the digital transfer on images and information more portable and more convenient. It is entirely consumer led.

In all of the plush presentation there was little or no mention of the business user, despite the fact that a large slice, perhaps a third, of Microsoft’s revenue comes from ongoing licence fees paid mostly by business users.

For a company that banked fourteen billion in profits last year, you would hardly think that Microsoft was in panic mode, but many giants have come and gone in the new technology whirlwind, and dropping from a seventy per cent share of the market to less than thirty per cent has got to grab somebodies attention in the boardroom in Seattle.

The concern is that in this rush to embrace the new consumers, a good many traditional ones may be left literally in the cold. Sometime before announcing the impending arrival of Windows 8, Microsoft posted that all support for XP would cease in April 2014. That may seem a lifetime away to the teenage user of an X-box but that’s not that long away in business terms, and in fact support for XP has been wound down since 2009.

What that means is that for the last few years all the clever people have been working on the new stuff, and that shortly they will give up on the old stuff completely. And lack of support doesn’t just mean that spares won’t be on the shelf. It means there will be no one even looking at problems that arise from day to day in the new technical environment, let alone doing anything about them.

Apart from numerous issues of reliability, security is likely to be an increasing worry for the business user as the very convenience of access the new technology provides will also open doors to potential vulnerability. It might not be state secrets going out of your back door, but it could be your customer database and job information that is being hi-jacked. Cookies and trackers will get more sophisticated as they are regularly seen as legitimate marketing tools.

In all of this I have not mentioned Windows 7, Vista’s replacement, which despite coming pre-installed on most recent PCs, failed to make much inroad in the update market. Perhaps the innate conservatism of industry, or the caution over inheriting another dud, most users preferred to plod on with XP. 41 per cent of the world’s PCs apparently run on XP to this day, including major banks and institutions.

Volkswagen last year moved its 60,000 PCs onto Windows 7 so is unlikely to be rushing out to buy another upgrade in the next couple of years. Most companies who keep their finger on the pulse of these things give it two years to evaluate new systems before jumping ship, if at all.

That was Vista’s undoing. All the bugs came out in the open despite the best efforts of the public relations department, and it was gradually slipped into the bottom draw. Seven, it has to be said is a much better platform, and is backed by Microsoft up to 2020 so it has a decent shelf life. With a couple of years real time experience behind it, and no major issues discovered, it has to be the upgrade of choice for the business user, small or large, and sooner rather than later. You might want to pass that message on to your bank manager too before it gets too late!

Moving back to imaging but not very far from current software, one of the biggest things for iPhone users has been Instagram, introduced just two years ago, it has swept the face of hand held devices and is the editing programme of choice for social networking sites.

If you don’t know what Instagram is or what it looks like you might want to put down your quill pen and parchment for a moment and learn something new.

It is both very sophisticated in action and extremely simple in operation. By using filters to automatically adjust colour and contrast it changes bland mobile phone snaps, of which billions are taken every second, into individual and creative works of art. The wow factor being an important part of recognition on internet sharing, it was both an instant and continuing hit. And it was free to use. From a small start-up company Instagram has now become part of the Facebook giant but still run independently.

There is a competitor stretching its digital legs however, Snapeed. This comes from Nik software who have been produced highly sophisticated plug-ins for Photoshop for years and are well regarded by professional photographers and printers.

I have to confess that when I first took a look at Nik’s portfolio range I couldn’t immediately see the benefits from its fairly hefty price tag, when you already had to have purchased Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom or whatever. But having been made to have another look, on the recommendation of a fellow photographer, I have changed my mind.

One of the advantages is that you can pick and mix several products in the range for specific tasks, rather than go for the whole bunch, and there are tools for colour, black and white, sharpening etc which may seem fairly obvious. What singles the Nik software out — and I have tried other plug-ins — is it is able to be incredibly selective on which part of an image it applies the chosen effect to, right down to individual pixels.

Photoshop users will know that you need to use the selection tool or

paths to isolate features and that this can be quite time consuming when efficiency in editing is at a premium. My experience is that you invariably need to apply some selective editing to improve the look of a customer’s original — even if it is taken with a good camera — especially for any form of enlargement. A good print is an outstanding advert for the printer, and a bad one quite the reverse. The customer will never accept liability.

I will review the Nik range at more length next month but as a taster here is a sample using the desktop version of Snapeed which retails for the princely sum of £13.40 (yes there’s no noughts missing). It is user friendly in the extreme, giving you thumbnails of all the edit options,

and the ability to save full high resolution copies. It’s this latter piece of genius that has made

Google sit up and take notice, acquiring Nik software in August so there could be a lot more developments in the pipeline.

AS part of its new Cyclus campaign, Arjowiggins Graphic is supporting the charity SOS Children’s Villages with both a donation and school exercise books to help over 1,600 Rwandan children with their school education.

This is a worldwide Cyclus initiative supporting SOS Children’s Villages – it will be rolled out in 32 countries and in 22 languages across the UK, Europe and overseas markets. In total the campaign will see 61,500 mailers and 9,400 sample packs distributed.

Antalis McNaughton, a Cyclus distributor in the UK, is running The ‘Do you believe in Recycled Paper’ campaign during September, October and November. Each time a customer requests a sample pack of Cyclus from the dedicated campaign website: http://www.cycluspaper.com/AntalisMcNaughton/UK an A4 school exercise book produced on Cyclus 100% recycled paper will be donated.

The exercise books will be distributed through SOS Children’s Villages, which helps 1,649 children in Rwanda each year gain an elementary education. Through this campaign Arjowiggins Graphic will be supporting four schools in Rwanda. The schools are based in Byumba, Gikongoro, Kayonza and the Rwandan capital Kigali.

The campaign starts with a mailer that has been designed to promote the sustainable nature of Cyclus and its 100% environmental commitment – using imagery of items that are ‘upcycled’ from different materials. This imagery includes a clock made from an old bicycle wheel, a children’s toy cooker created from old tin cans and a table made from discarded magazines There will also be two e-blasts directing people to the dedicated website.

Chloe Thacker, Marketing Communications Manager at Antalis McNaughton, comments: “This is a really thought provoking campaign and we are thrilled to be taking part. The work that is being done by SOS

Children’s Villages is outstanding. We are proud that our work can help to provide something that can have an impact on people’s lives.”Angela De Vorchik, Operational

Marketing Manager at Arjowiggins Graphic, comments: “This campaign gives Arjowiggins Graphic an opportunity to deliver a positive social impact beyond the promotion of sustainable manufacturing, namely supporting the education of children in poverty. The whole creative behind the campaign perfectly visualises the 100% environmental commitment

that is so integral to the Cyclus brand and will hopefully encourage our customers to consider a

100% recycled paper when they next choose a print job.”

which builds families for children in need. Through a network of over 500 villages it provides orphans in 133 countries with a safe, loving home and a chance to attend school.

One of the UN’s 2015 development goals is to achieve ‘universal primary education’. SOS Children’s Villages also work towards this goal. Most of the children achieve the equivalent of a 9th or 10th grade exam or learn a trade; a third of them go on to higher education.

SOS school projects in Rwanda provide 1,649 children with an elementary education, giving them a unique chance to lift themselves out of poverty. By supporting school projects in Rwanda, Cyclus is helping these children towards a better future.

EllioTT Baxter the exclusive distributor of Satimat green, Maine gloss green and Oxygen papers are to launch a new direct mail campaign. The campaign aims to showcase a number of the key papers produced at The Arjowiggins Graphic de-inking plant at Greenfield in France – which sources up to 25% of the waste paper used for producing recycled pulp from the UK - as well as highlighting the high levels of whiteness and environmental integrity offered by the papers.

Targeting printers and designers the mailer demonstrates the sustainability of the Satimat green, Maine gloss green and Oxygen range, using a flowchart of images to demonstrate the process from start to finish.

Chris Sandwell Sales Director at Elliott Baxter, comments: “This campaign

will enable us to demonstrate the benefits of our recycled paper range, such as the bright white quality that the paper retains despite being manufactured from recycled pulp. Not only is the paper of a high quality, but also the fact that that up to 25% of the waste paper used in the manufacturing process is sourced within the UK, enables us to limit the impact of our paper to landfill across Britain. In choosing one of our recycled range of papers consumers and businesses can demonstrate their commitment to lessening their environmental impact, without sacrificing the high quality and bright white finish previously only associated with virgin fibre papers.”www.ebbpaper.co.uk

FuJiFilM Europe has so far managed to raise €10,680 in the first three months of its 12-month initiative which began in May this year to support WaterAid, an international charity dedicated to improving access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene in some of the world’s poorest communities.

The company is donating a percentage of the sales of every square metre of its Brillia HD PRO-T3 processless plate sold in Europe, Middle East and Africa to WaterAid, as a result of the fact that water is not required in the production of these plates.

“As a company we are highly committed to the environment and are delighted to be able to support WaterAid with donations from PRO-T3 sales,” explains Mr Morimoto, senior vice president, Fujifilm Europe GmbH. “Back in May we set €30,000 as our 12 month target and we are very

happy with the money we have raised so far.”

Fujifilm’s contribution to date has been welcomed by WaterAid, and corporate account manager, Susie Kennedy, is quick to praise the company’s involvement. “We are extremely grateful that Fujifilm has taken such an active interest in our work,” she says. “Having safe water and sanitation allows people to take the first, essential steps out of poverty, and the money donated by Fujifilm will help WaterAid transform lives. We look forward to their

continued support in the coming months.”Please follow @fujifilmPrinteu or visit www.pro-t3.com for updates on the initiative and amount raised.

ilFord, a developer and manufacturer of professional quality substrates for the inkjet and graphic arts markets shared a vision which will see the company established as a leading provider of environmentally responsible substrates for commercial printing.

Aiming to offer print specifiers and print service providers a range of high performance printing substrates with strong environmental credentials, ILFORD drew on complete product lifecycle thinking to demonstrate a multi-level commitment to environmental responsibility, encompassing the products the company brings to market, the sourcing of raw materials and its Swiss manufacturing operations. Visitors to EcoPrint Live were invited to find out more by visiting the ILFORD stand.

Committed to progress: ILFORD BioMedi - Introduced in 2011, the ILFORD BioMedia substrate range has been developed in direct response to market demand for sustainable printing solutions and offers a PVC-free alternative to traditional vinyl display products. The range brings together display films, boards and laminates offering a number of biodegradable, recyclable, incineration friendly and low energy printing credentials.

ILFORD has established processes for continuous improvement of the BioMedia range from design through to final application, with active participation in the ESMA standards committee and in the EcoPrint Ambassador group, which works towards an agreement on standardisation.

Committed to Change: ILFORD OMNIJET - Alongside ILFORD BioMedia, ILFORD has identified the longstanding ILFORD OMNIJET range of high performance commercial printing substrates as a priority for development. In a sustained effort to improve the environmental credentials of the range, ILFORD introduced the FSC Certified (C107238) OMNIJET Photo Realistic photo paper in 2011, with PEFC certified RC papers becoming available in 2012. For 2013 ILFORD will introduce a recycled range of film-based display products.

Committed to a sustainable future: holistic product life cycle analysis - ILFORD develops and coats substrates at the company’s world class coating

facility in Switzerland, where stringent environmental controls are in place throughout the manufacturing process.

ILFORD is a voluntary member of the Swiss Private Sector Energy Agency CO2 Reduction Scheme, which certifies a commitment to the active reduction of CO2 emissions and to the optimisation of energy efficiency. Following an agreement signed with the Federal Environment Agency, ILFORD is on track to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% for the period between 2008 and the end of 2012. Projects implemented to achieve this goal have included installing a heat recovery system on the main boiler at the ILFORD site in Switzerland, as well as an improved drying process of coated ILFORD media. The recently passed Swiss CO2 Act for the 2013 – 2020 period will require ILFORD to reduce CO2 emissions by at least a further 10%.

ILFORD has also implemented a number of recycling initiatives, including incinerating 250 tons of miscellaneous waste locally, producing heat and electricity. With a focus on recycling, ILFORD has recycled 100 tons of polyethylene coated paper into plastic moulded parts, 65 tons of paper and cardboard into cardboard and recycled seven tons of glass.

Alongside compliance with strict Swiss environmental standards, ILFORD manufacturing involves no solvents or toxic waste and ILFORD sources raw materials through selection, assessment and control of suppliers.

ILFORD in the industry - ILFORD substrates are compatible with a wide range of printing equipment and at EcoPrint Live the professional results produced by its BioMedia range were demonstrated across a number of stands.

With a growing international network of distributors, ILFORD sustainable substrates are being chosen by a number of high profile brands wishing to demonstrate commitment to environmental sustainability at all levels of business activity, including the sourcing of marketing and display products. These have most recently included Christian Aid and the Health and Safety Executive in the UK.for more information on ilford, please visit www.ilford.com

aLL WHiTE fOR a QuaNTuM LEaP THEMAgicToucH, global pioneers of the digital image transfer process for the past 20 years, announce the arrival of yet another significant milestone for the garment decoration and promotional gift industry.

Introducing the exclusive new OKI C711WT Colour plus White LED Printer with white toner added to the CMY colour process. This unique innovation with the new toner delivers very good opacity and therefore a very high ‘White’ factor for non-fabric hard surface applications as well as garments and textiles.

On time for the release of the new printer, TheMagicTouch has upgraded their award winning WoW7.2 transfer media to seamlessly fit for the new white toner technology. Now reduced to a simple 2 step process the new WoW7.5 in conjunction with the C711WT becomes the perfect, affordable, solution for all garment decoration

regardless of fabric colour or type. With a minimum application temperature of as low as 110°C/230°F it perfectly overcomes the potential scorching mark of the Heat Press on some of the new popular ‘high tech’ performance fabrics and garments.

“We will deliver the printer with an added value beyond the factory standard” says Jim Nicol UK Managing Director of TheMagicTouch in the UK. He added “By using our unique Print Utility Software “SpaceControl” with the C711WT enables the user to print ‘white-only’ with the click of a button. Most important, the SpaceControl software will allow total control over the white toner i.e. where and how much is printed.”

The new white toner also extends a new lease of life to existing transfer papers allowing the decoration of any colour materials, products and substrates. Now CPM papers can decorate dark colour mugs, diaries, leather, phone and tablet covers, binders and various types of folders with ‘white’ as the extra colour included in the design. New ‘white’ also extends to the Tattoo paper for skin and nail decoration as well as the CL*Media Label stock range for the production of stickers and decals with opaque colours and full colour definition.

The C711WT with the SpaceControl Print Utility software will be available for delivery in October and priced at £1995.00. Of course the printer is fully compatible with all MagicTouch transfer papers and traditional applications by simply unchecking the ‘Print White’ box in SpaceControl or select ‘white off’ in the printer driver.for further information contact www.themagictouch.co.uk

douBlE your proFiTHow can you double your profit in these hard economic times? Virtually impossible I’m guessing you’re saying and yes I can understand your cynicism. However over the coming months I’m going to reveal loads of brilliant ways to improve your bottom line. Some will be so obvious you will wonder why didn’t I think of that, some might relate to changes in legislation or just be links to useful websites or sources of great information but all will have value.

So let’s give it a go and see if we can double your profit. You may have missed this:

SMAll BuSinESS rATE rEliEFYou will be eligible for a discount under the small business rate relief scheme in England if you only occupy one property and it has a rateable value below £12,000. The Government has temporarily doubled the level of relief available. Between 1 October 2010 and 31 March 2013, eligible ratepayers will receive small business rate relief at 100 per cent on properties up to £6,000 (rather than 50 per cent), and a tapering relief from 100 per cent to 0 per cent for properties up to £12,000 in rateable value for that period. There are other reliefs available for businesses with large properties and more than one premise. Jut search online for voa.gov.uk

rATES AppEAlSRateable values are based on the estimated rental value of your property as at a legally designated date ( the valuation date, 2010). This figure is calculated by the District Valuer working on behalf of the Local Authority using evidence of transactions in the area. To this rateable value a percentage rate poundage multiplier is applied which is slightly different between the UK, Scotland and Wales, giving you the commercial rates you pay. It has nothing to do with the services you receive, so if they are rubbish or indeed not collecting rubbish all you can do it rant and rave. However if you think your rateable value could be wrong there is something you can do.

Why could your rateable value be wrong ? It is unlikely that the District Valuer will have measured your property wrongly, although that is possible, it is more likely that the usage of the premises might have changed. Be careful because if the use is an improvement, in other words a prospective tenant would pay more than before then you might not want to flag that up, however if legislation changed and you could now not use the property for its former valuable purpose then that might be grounds for appeal.

Equally if a physical change has taken place and affects what a prospective tenant might pay, the closing of a street so there are no pedestrians passing your property for example, or even the opening of a huge new supermarket that has killed the High Street. Even events such as temporary road closures that severely affect a trade could receive a reduction in rates paid for a while.

Remember the rateable value is based on usage so if you have a part of your property underused it might be worth actually emptying it and applying for ‘empty’ rates. This is only available for a short period but may be worth the effort, indeed some people have gone as far as removing roofs so the property is unusable.

You can check the rateable value calculations on line which will not only tell you the various floor areas of differing elements of the building but the estimated rental applied to each area. ( don’t forget these are retrospective figures - 2010 ) so may not exactly match what is happening today. voa.gov.uk is the first place to visit which will provide you with all the information you need and how to make an appeal. It may be worth employing a specialist rating surveyor to undertake this for you as their experience and background knowledge will clearly help any argument.

Transitional relief. Further help is available for businesses where their rateable value has increased dramatically, again this information is available on line.

Making more money is on the cards

HoorAH, the Plastic Data Card’s HP Indigo 5600 Digital Press has arrived!

Over the past 18 months PDC has been re-planning and upgrading their equipment, and finally everything is now in place. They have had to extensively re-modernise their premises to accommodate the new machinery, which includes new automatic cutting and foiling machines and the latest addition, the HP Indigo 5600 six colour press, but the wait and effort has all been worthwhile. In total they have invested over £0.5 million in new print and production equipment.

As an established company of 20 years they felt it imperative to keep abreast of the latest technology in their production processes. The new press is certainly at the cutting edge of

technology; HP launched it at drupa in Germany earlier this year.

Plastic Data Card Ltd. are one of the first companies in the UK to install this press. It uses HP’s new liquid

“Electroink Technology” and unique digital offset process to produce print of the highest quality. The print quality from the new press can

match or sometimes exceed offset, allowing them to be used interchangeably.

From the outset PDC has specialised in the manufacture of high quality plastic cards and over the years the company has made substantial investments in every aspect of plastic card production. Their prime objective is to ensure that the customers’ requirements are fully met, both in terms of production and fulfilment and now they have the extra speed and superior quality of the HP5600 they can pretty much guarantee these results.

The new press will enable printing on the widest possible range of more than 2500 certified substrates, both coated and uncoated papers, as well as unique substrates such as synthetics, dark, transparent and metallics.

Plastic Data Card would like to give you the opportunity to see for yourself the print quality from the new HP 5600. If you would like to send suitable CMYK artwork they will print a sample and return it to you totally free of charge. www.plasticdatacard.co.uk

WHAT ArE ApprEnTicESHipS? An apprentice is an employee working within a business earning and learning at the same time. They will receive training on the job and frequently through day-release to attain further nationally recognised qualifications. Depending upon the nature or level of the apprenticeship it could last for between one and four years. The majority of apprentices will work within the business for 30 hours per week with the remainder of their time being devoted to external training.

WHo ArE THEy For?An apprentice can be anyone over the age of 16 years old that may have already been working or has maybe just finished their education, as long as they are not in full time education and have the right to work in the UK then they are likely to be eligible. There are different types of Apprenticeships that will be dependent upon the industry that you are in and for qualifying candidates.

TrAining Apprentices must receive a structured training programme; employers are monitored to make sure that the terms of an apprenticeship are being followed. For example, an apprentice will receive the bulk of their training whilst working with the remainder of their training taking place at a college or maybe another recognised training body. Training at college may be on a day-release or block-release basis.

The apprentice – You’re Hired! The term apprentice has historically been associated with those working in a “trade” such as engineering, plumbing or electrical but is now relevant to all employers, including you so read on…

SME Advisor can help you and your business!

pAyThe National Minimum Wage for an Apprentice is £2.65 per hour albeit many employers recognise their true worth and will pay them considerably more!

grAnTSYes grants are available too, for qualifying candidates then the employer may receive £1,500 to support them in taking on an apprentice.

A spokesman for the National Apprenticeship Service added that employers need to make more use of the help already available to them when taking on young apprentices.

He said: “Businesses have repeatedly told us they would like financial help when they take on an apprentice. The Apprenticeship Grant for Employers of 16 to 24 year-olds does just that, it offers up to 40,000 grant payments of £1,500 each to smaller employers in England to support them to take on a young apprentice.”

Courtesy of Personnel Today

more than 500,000 people started an apprenticeship in the year to July 2012, according to the latest government figures.

last year, the Government committed to investing £180 million to create 50,000 apprenticeship places by 2015.

sTuCk on The island

An ambitious yuppie finally decided to take a vacation. He booked himself on a Caribbean cruise and proceeded to have the time of his life...until the boat sank! The man found himself swept up on the shore of an island with no other people, no supplies... Nothing. Only bananas and coconuts.

After about four months, he is lying on the beach one day when the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen rows up to him.

In disbelief he asks her: ‘Where did you come from? How did you get here?’

‘I rowed from the other side of the island,’ she says. ‘I landed here when my cruise ship sank.’

‘Amazing,’ he says. ‘You were really lucky to have a row boat wash up with you.’

‘Oh, this?’ replies the woman. ‘I made the row boat out of raw material that I found on the island; the oars were whittled from gum tree branches; I wove the bottom from palm branches; and the sides and stern came from a Eucalyptus tree.’

‘But-but, that’s impossible,’ stutters the man. ‘You had no tools or hardware. How did you manage?’

‘Oh, that was no problem,’ replies the woman. ‘On the south side of the island, there is a very unusual strata of alluvial rock exposed. I found that if I fired it to a certain temperature in my kiln, it melted into forgeable ductile iron. I used that for tools and used the tools to make the hardware.

The guy is stunned. ‘Let’s row over to my place, ‘ she says. After a few minutes of rowing, she

docks the boat at a small wharf. As the man looks onto shore, he nearly falls out of the boat. Before him is a stone walk leading to an exquisite bungalow painted in blue and white. While the woman ties up the row boat with an expertly woven hemp rope, the man can only stare ahead, dumb-struck.

As they walk into the house, her beautiful breasts bouncing with each step, she says casually, ‘It’s not much, but I call it home.

Sit down please; would you like to have a drink?’

‘No thank you,’ he says, still dazed. ‘Can’t take any more coconut juice.’

‘It’s not coconut juice,’ the woman replies. ‘I have a still. How about a Pina Colada?’

Trying to hide his continued amazement, the man accepts, and they sit down on her couch to talk.

After they have exchanged their stories, the woman announces, ‘I’m going to slip into something more comfortable. Would you like to take a shower and shave?

There is a razor upstairs in the cabinet in the bathroom.’

No longer questioning anything, the man goes into the bathroom. There, in the cabinet, is a razor made from a bone handle. Two shells honed to a hollow ground edge are fastened onto its end, inside of a swivel mechanism.

‘This woman is amazing,’ he muses. ‘What next?’ When he returns, she greets him

wearing nothing but vines and a shell necklace-strategically positioned-and smelling faintly of gardenias.

She beckons for him to sit down next to her.

‘Tell me,’ she begins suggestively, slithering closer to him, ‘we’ve been out here for a very long time. You’ve been lonely. I’ve been lonely.

There’s something I’m sure you really feel like doing right about now, something you’ve been longing for all these months? You know... ‘

She stares into his eyes. He can’t believe what he’s hearing.

His heart begins to pound. He’s truly in luck: ‘You mean...’, he gasps, ‘

...I can actually check my e-mail from here?

Teddy beaRs A man meets a gorgeous woman in a bar. They talk, they connect, they end up leaving together.

They get back to her place, and as she shows him around her apartment, he notices that her bedroom is completely packed with teddy bears. Hundreds of small bears on a shelf all the way along the floor, medium sized ones on a shelf a little higher and huge bears on the top shelf along the wall. The man is kind of surprised that this woman would have a collection of teddy bears, especially one that’s so extensive, but he decides not to mention this to her.

After a night of passion, as they are lying together in the after glow the man rolls over and asks, smiling, ‘Well, how was it?’ The woman says, ‘You can have any prize from the bottom shelf.’

CheeRsThree leaders of the big beer companies meet for a drink. The president of Budweiser orders a Bud. Miller’s president orders a Millers and the president of Coors orders a Coors. When it is Guinness turn to order he orders a soda. Why didn’t you order a Guinness everyone asks? Nah Guinness replies. If you guys aren’t having a beer neither will I.

Farmer Joe was in his car when he was hit by a truck. He decided his injuries from the accident were serious enough to take the trucking company (responsible for the accident) to court. In court the trucking company’s fancy lawyer was questioning farmer Joe. “Didn’t you say, at the scene of the accident, ‘I’m fine’?” said the lawyer.

Farmer Joe responded, “Well I’ll tell you what happened. I had just loaded my favorite mule Bessie into the...” “I didn’t ask for any details,” the lawyer interrupted, “just answer the question.”

“Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, ‘I’m fine’!”

Farmer Joe said, “Well I had just got Bessie into the trailer and I was driving down the road...”

The lawyer interrupted again and said, “Judge, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the Highway Patrolman on the scene that he was just fine. Now several weeks after the accident he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud. Please tell him to simply answer the question.”

By this time the Judge was fairly

interested in Farmer Joe’s answer and said to the lawyer, “I’d like to hear what he has to say about his favorite mule Bessie.”

Joe thanked the Judge and proceeded, “Well as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my favorite mule, into the trailer and was driving her down the highway when this huge semi-truck and trailer ran the stop sign and smacked my truck right in the side. I was thrown into one ditch and Bessie was thrown into the other.

I was hurting real bad and didn’t want to move. However, I could hear ole Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible shape just by her groans.

Shortly after the accident a Highway Patrolman came on the scene. He could hear Bessie moaning and groaning so he went over to her. After he looked at her, he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes.

Then the Patrolman came across the road with his gun in his hand and looked at me. He said, “Your mule was in such bad shape I had to shoot her. How are you feeling?”

rAc spOt best Accident excuses

Cows materialising out of nowhere, builders popping out of manholes, and amorous rhinos are just a few of the most bizarre excuses coming up on a new insurance claims form study!

Staff at RAC Insurance have been logging the more unusual explanations offered on claim forms, with men, it seems, particularly prone to weird experiences on the roads.

The organisation has come up with a top ten of excuses. They are:

‘A cow appeared from nowhere and started kicking my car door’.

‘I’m not very good at driving and confused the accelerator with the brake’.

‘A builder popped out of a manhole cover and I swerved dramatically to avoid decapitating him’

‘An incompetent mechanic drove my car off a raised ramp while looking for the bonnet release’

‘I got so excited singing the national anthem during a football match that I smashed my van into a traffic light.’

‘A mad cyclist purposefully scratched my vehicle with his thermos flask’.

‘The road just looked different yesterday.’

‘It’s the police’s fault – I crashed into a lamp-post as I made way for a patrol car.’

‘I was carefully observing a rare bird nesting and missed the road ahead’

‘Vehicle damaged on safari park outing by George, an amorous rhino’

clever stuffWhen Albert Einstein was making the rounds of the speakers circuit, he usually found himself eagerly longing to get back to his laboratory work. One night as they were driving to yet another rubber chicken dinner, Einstein mentioned to his chauffeur (a man who somewhat resembled Einstein in looks and manner) that he was tired of speechmaking.

“I have an idea, boss,” his chauffeur said. “I’ve heard you give this speech so many times. I’ll bet I could give it for you.” Einstein laughed loudly and said, “Why not? Let’s do it!” When they arrive at the dinner, Einstein donned the chauffeur’s cap and jacket and sat in the back of the room. The chauffeur gave a beautiful rendition of Einstein’s speech and even answered a few questions expertly.

Then a supremely pompous professor asked an extremely esoteric question about anti-matter formation, digressing here and there to let everyone in the audience know that he was nobody’s fool. Without missing a beat, the chauffeur fixed the professor with a steely stare and said, “Sir, the answer to that question is so simple that I will let my chauffeur, who is sitting in the back, answer it for me.”
