Contra Vision BACKLITE Lights up the Night

VIsITors arriving by train at Stratford Station, the main public transport hub for the Olympics and Paralympics, were greeted by a dramatic wrap of the entire station, visible during the hours of darkness as well as daylight. It was made possible by using Contra Vision BACKLITE patented see through graphic technology; an effect not achievable with any other perforated window film on the market.

As a Tier One sponsor of London 2012, UK bank, Lloyds TSB, took the opportunity to make a bold visual statement by wrapping the station with graphics which showcased some of the sports included in the games. This was a first for Lloyds TSB, for space advertiser, CBS Outdoor, for print and installation provider VGL, and for Contra Vision, who supplied the material which enables such striking see through graphics 24/7.

Contra Vision BACKLITE Performance Translucent White perforated window film gives the graphics 24 hour impact by being illuminated from the ambient illumination within the station, which would “burn through” ordinary one way vision products. This was important to maintain visibility for spectators returning to Stratford Station at dusk and later when conventional one way vision graphics would not be visible because the light from inside the station passing through the holes of white and black perforated material would swamp the graphics.

Visitors arriving at the station could see the Olympics activity outside, thus avoiding the claustrophobic effect that solid window graphics would have caused. In addition, the Contra Vision BACKLITE technology allows a subtle ghost of the printed image to be seen from the inside, which extended the Lloyds TSB brand message with its distinctive colours and cartoon graphic style to those within the station. A further benefit of using Contra Vision BACKLITE Performance perforated window film was that it was possible to apply this to inwardly sloping glazing, whereas other manufacturers stipulate vertical surfaces only. The graphics were then easily removed after the Games.

The images were printed by VGL using their NUR Fresco solvent inkjet machine and CBS Outdoor worked with Rainey Kelly, MEC and Kinetic to create this stunning installation. Both the client and the agency were delighted with the outcome.

Seven out of the ten million visitors to London 2012 passed through Stratford Station and will have seen these graphics. Roland Hill, Chairman and MD of Contra Vision Supplies Ltd, commented, “Using Contra Vision BACKLITE Performance enabled visitors to see these images day and night and we are delighted that our product was able to add to the visual impact around the Olympic Park. This spectacular demonstration of the product has already led to interest in retail, bus shelter and other applications.”for further information, please contact: 0161 439 9307

ThE Printing Charity announced Lord Black of Brentwood, Executive Director of Telegraph Media Group, as its President for 2013 at the charity’s Annual Luncheon held at Stationers’ Hall, London, on 8 November. His term as President takes effect in January.

The outgoing President, Murdoch MacLennan, Chief Executive of Telegraph Media Group, said he was honoured to be the charity’s President for 2102. He spoke of the huge challenges presented to everyone in the world of print caused by the prolonged recession and profound structural change within the industry. He stressed the importance of ensuring that people who need help receive it.

He added: “The Printing Charity wants to help. But in turn, the charity needs help ensuring that those who need help know there is someone they can turn to in difficulty. Getting that message across is absolutely vital and everyone at the Annual Luncheon has a role to play as an ambassador in that cause.”

Rory Bremner – impressionist, comedian, satirist, translator, columnist, writer, presenter, and ballroom dancer – was this year’s guest speaker. He entertained guests with a satirical overview of developments in politics and the press, accompanied by impersonations for which he is so well known.

Over 180 people from the printing and publishing industries attended the event, which raised £1,743 through four prize draws for the charity’s work.www.theprintingcharity.org.uk

FoLLowINg the publication this year of Canon’s latest Insight Report, The Bigger Picture: Your customers’ view of the value of print, Canon UK recently hosted a series of customer forums focused on the research. The forums, which took place in London, Reigate, Birmingham and Dublin, gave Canon customers the opportunity to discuss the research and explore the ways in which it can help them to grow their businesses.

Michael Moradian of Print Express in London says: “This initiative from Canon is to be welcomed. The forum gave me access to insight that, as a small company, I otherwise wouldn’t have access to. The Bigger Picture is an extremely useful piece of research because it gives you a better idea of what our customers are looking for and what the broad trends in the market are. I think that all suppliers in the industry should be engaging in this sort of activity because it makes the whole industry stronger.”

The Bigger Picture was commissioned by Canon with the aim of helping Print Service Providers (PSPs) to understand better what print buyers actually want, thus equipping them better to meet their customers’ needs more effectively, grow their own businesses and help to grow those of their customers. The research covers five main topics: the value of print to print buyers, how print buyers choose a print provider, how print buyers use print, how print buyers see their future use of print and opportunities for print providers.

Commenting on what the research shows about the value of print, Moradian continues: “Print is tactile, it’s easier to manage in some circumstances and it can also give a lot more information in a compact form. It’s still easier to read than scrolling across a screen. That’s what I felt the research really came up with, that we’re an important part of the communications mix with a definite role to play. We need to find ways to integrate with other channels and help them integrate with print, because other channels are enablers not competitors.”

Barry Cool, Director of Propeller in East Sussex, says that the research

makes him optimistic for the future: “The research reaffirmed a lot of what we, as a business, believe. When we took over the business five years ago,

we believed that the future would be about what you can think of and create, not just what print you can produce.

Today we’re certainly seeing evidence that this is true, and the report seems to back that up. It shows that people

still very much value everything printed, in addition to all the digital media that are available to them. The

people who’re ‘winning’ with their clients are the ones who understand all of the elements and offer

the right solutions for the project at hand, even if that means printing less for some projects.”

Cool explains: “We work really hard to understand our clients, understand their business and understand what they’re looking for. The Bigger Picture is an

invaluable piece of research because it gives our industry an insight into what the buyer

thinks. The research shows that there is a lack of awareness among many print buyers about the range of possibilities offered by

digital print. By developing relationships with your clients that make you become a trusted advisor instead of a supplier, you’re building valuable relationships that will sustain your business in the long term.”

According to Andy Harris, European & UK Graphic Arts Customer Marketing, Professional Print Solutions, Canon Europe: “We had an overwhelmingly positive response to The Bigger Picture research from our customers at drupa earlier this year and this was echoed in the feedback we’ve been receiving from customers after these forums. Canon is not only highlighting the need for PSPs to build more consultative relationships with their customers, we’re also working with them to help them do this through initiatives such as the Essential Business Builder Program and business mentoring. We look forward to seeing growing numbers of PSPs using the insights to improve communication with their customers and grow their businesses.”www.canon.co.uk

hP has announced its programme of European publishing seminars to present the benefits of digital publications printing to leading publishers in major cities.

Building on the theme, “Discover the next big thing in publishing — print,” the first event features presentations by Robert E. Baensch, Director for Publishing Programs, SUNY Global Institute, New York, NY; Jeanette Derksen, of CPI Wöhrmann; Koen Luijten, of Paro; and Geert Gortzak, of WPG.

“With traditional publishing models under great pressure, digital printing offers publishers a cost-effectiveness and immediacy never before possible,” said Paul Randall, EMEA Market Manager, Direct Marketing, Transactional and Publishing Segment, HP. “HP’s solutions

can benefit publishers in all sectors, whether for magazines or books, in full colour or black and white, in hard or soft cover formats.”

Among the many advantages of digital publishing to be discussed will be printing short-runs profitably;

using variable data to meet market needs and add value; helping to reduce distribution costs and eliminating warehousing (this can minimise risk while saving money and waste by printing only what is needed when it is

needed); bringing publishers’ full catalogues back into print; and freeing up cash.

2013 events are planned for London, Paris and Stuttgart. For further information about HP’s publishing solutions, please visit

ProsKILLs and the National Skills Academy for Materials, Production, and Supply (NSA MPS) have been the skills partners of choice for the Process and Manufacturing sector since 2005, working to deliver solutions to the skills needs for companies across the UK.

To date, these organisations have: • Developed over 1,500 National Occupational

Standards, 589 units, 406 qualifications, and 51apprenticeship frameworks

• Driven up the number of technical qualifications awarded in the sector from 3,000 per year to more than 9,000, and improved apprenticeship uptake from 700 annually to over 3,500.

• Enabled over 30,000 learners to access support funding with a value of over £48m, benefitting over 2,000 employers

• Gained the commitment of over 1,500 employers who have pledged to improve the skills in their businesses

• Provided schools programmes to over 110,000 students from 1000 schools, with 500 twinned employers

Changes in government funding arrangements over the last year have led both Proskills and NSA MPS to review their activities, finding ways to maintain key services to the sector whilst improving efficiency and effectiveness. A key part of this process will be removing duplication in the offerings of Proskills and the NSA MPS. From now, you will therefore see a lot of the services that used to be offered by Proskills moved under the NSA MPS brand to help streamline and simplify the offering to their partners and customers. This will include updates to the Proskills and NSA MPS websites, and to the individual industry skills academy sites that they run.

They have processes in place to ensure that this transfer will not create any unnecessary breaks in service to customers. They continue to be a Standard Setting Organisation (SSO) for the sector and all of their National

Occupational Standards, Qualifications and Apprenticeship Framework development and implementation activities will continue uninterrupted. They will also continue to research skill needs, arrange funding, and deliver skills solutions to companies across the UK and beyond.

In the future, the NSA MPS will remain the natural conduit for Government and employer skills investment in the sector. They will continue to offer specialist support on skills and

training issues with access to quality assured accredited training providers, information about funded training support, careers advice, schools programmes, and support regarding Apprenticeships and achieving recognition or accreditation of training courses.

For the Paper and Print industries, rather than continue with the current Industry Board Format, they will work with the industries through other existing employer groups and Trade Associations to deliver the industry’s vision and strategic objectives for skills and development in order to develop and retain a highly skilled and productive workforce.

Proskills Sector Skills Organisation and its National Skills Academy for Materials, Production and Supply is an employer-led, not for profit organisation, supporting nine manufacturing and process industries including: Building Products; Coatings, Paints and Printing Inks; Extractive and Mineral Processing; Furniture, Furnishings and Interiors; Glass Manufacture, Processing and Installation; Cross-sector Health & Safety; Paper and Corrugated Cardboard; Printing; and Wood and Timber

These industries make up a third of UK Manufacturing Sector. Proskills Sector Skills Organisation is part of the National Skills Academy and helps to raise the profile of the sector; sets the skills standards and qualifications and ensures that the skills and funding system delivers against the current and future needs of the industries. for more information on the new nsa mPs offer, please contact richard moore on 07910 247734 or [email protected]

Sitting pretty raffle prize winner!JUsT a quick note to say thank you so much for the pallet of paper which we won in your recent Subs Raffle.

As I mentioned to you before, we now work from our home office in the garden and so have downsized considerably from our previous copy shop, consequently we had an ‘interesting’ time finding room for the paper.

That said the paper is very welcome and is of a better quality than the usual ‘ex mill 80gsm that we bought previously.

I enclose a few pictures for your amusement of the ‘chair’ which we built with some of the boxes!

Please also pass our thanks on to Antalis McNaughton for their generous donation. (Their delivery driver was most amused as he unloaded!)

Thanks again and best wishesSheila and Martin Oliver,Happy Proprietors of Smartwork

Epson launches new series of dye sublimation printers

dsALEs, the UK distributor for the Develop range of production print imaging systems, has launched a new flagship mono production print system aimed at the commercial print and high volume in-plant sectors. The ineo 1250 provides high speed, reliable mono output with outstanding image quality for both fine line text and half-tones. This makes the ineo 1250 ideal for commercial print on demand applications, offering significant cost saving benefits over conventional cut sheet litho output in terms of plate making, pre-press set up and post print cleaning.

This highly versatile system can generate 7,500 A4 impressions per hour on substrates up to 350gsm card and SRA3 in size. This meets the print industry’s preferred bleed size for media of SRA3 (320 by 450mm) allowing full size A3 documents with trim marks and A4 booklets to be trimmed to size. Print resolution is outstanding at 1,200 by 1,200 dpi using Develop’s patented polymerised toner with smaller, smoother, uniform toner particles for more even distribution, significantly better fine line definition, and better solid fills.

The ineo 1250 is designed for average monthly volumes of between 400,000 and 750,000 printouts and will top the three million mark during peak times. Maximum paper capacity is 18,000 sheets so the ineo 1250 can run high volume jobs without the need for frequent operator intervention.

For online finishing the ineo 1250 offers a comprehensive range of modular options with a multitude of possible system configurations. Combinations

of folding, punching, booklet making, perfect binding and staple finishing are all supported. Also available is a smart punch unit for GBC style binding that includes the availability of numerous customer replaceable die sets for plastic comb, velo bind, wire bind and so on. Large capacity trolley stacking units are available for off-line finishing.

As the ineo 1250 staples and punches at the full rated speed of 7,500 A4 impressions an hour there is no loss of speed for producing finished documents as against sheet production.

Importantly for the public sector and corporate customers seeking to ensure minimal environmental impact, the ineo 1250 conforms to the guidelines of the International Energy Star Program for reduced energy consumption and improved efficiency.

For DSales (UK) Jonathan Whitworth, Managing Director stated, “The ineo 1250 is the product of Develop’s policy of listening to customer feedback to ensure that new systems are developed to meet customer needs. Feedback has identified that mono production still accounts for the vast majority of printed output by quick printers, CRDs, inplant print rooms, data centres and commercial printers. The ineo 1250 has been designed as a workhorse device for customer applications that still require production of large volumes of black and white documentation. The versatility, speed and robust duty cycle of the ineo 1250 make it the ideal system for our customers’ mono production needs.”www.dsales.eu

EPsoN enters the dye sublimation printing market for the first time with the announcement of two roll fed dye sublimation printers: the 44 inch SureColor SC-F6000 and the 64 inch SureColor SC-F7000.

Providing high quality output at up to 720 x 1440dpi on all leading transfer papers, the new printers are not only the first dye sublimation models from Epson, but also the first in this sector in which every component, from ink and printhead, to printer chassis and optional accessories, are all designed and manufactured by one company. This ensures that quality, performance and reliability are all optimised for maximum productive uptime and profit, and a low Total Cost of Ownership.

The SureColor SC-F models are durable and robust roll fed CMYK printers that support an extensive range of applications. The mid-high volume 64 inch SureColor SC-F7000 and low-medium volume 44 inch SureColor SC-F6000 have been developed for the efficient production of quality soft signage, sportswear, apparel, accessories, customised promotional items and decorated gadgets. Innovative single operator media loading and set up features, such as automatic media tensioning and an intuitive LCD control panel, make both printers easy and quick to set up and use.

Both models output at speeds from 16 to 57m2/hr, depending upon application, and feature an integral and easily refillable, high capacity 1.5 litre ink system. Furthermore, the auto take up roll – standard for SC-F7000

and optional for the SureColor SC-F6000 – allows maximum uninterrupted production runs with minimal downtime for maintenance.

Epson’s MicroPiezo TFP Print Head, which is already an established technology within the dye sublimation sector, ensures precise and repeatable performance as well as excellent longevity. These, in conjunction with Epson UltraChrome DS ink, a specially developed new aqueous ink, produces outstanding images with vibrant colours, intense

blacks, sharp contours and smooth gradations. Textile print produced by the SureColor SC-F series printers also exhibits excellent light and wash fastness, as well as resistance to abrasion and perspiration.

Guy Martin, product manager, Epson Europe, says: “Digitalisation of textile printing is still less than 2% of the market, but this application is growing rapidly. Our strategy is to increase that percentage, by providing professional print sectors with the most reliable and cost effective production solutions for the growing short run production, fully engineered by Epson to deliver consistent quality results.”

Guy adds: “The new SureColor SC-F6000 and SC-F7000 provide the dye-sublimation market with a choice of printers to suit a range of creative applications, backed up by Epson expertise and support. This is only a start for us and we will launch more products in the future.”www.epson.eu

IN a strident move to reposition itself as a supplier of wide format printing equipment and consumables, YPS – formerly Your Printing Supplies – has refreshed its brand identity and is now known as Your Print Specialists. In line with this, the company has joined the Mimaki reseller channel and will now supply a range of printers, software and finishing equipment, supported by exclusive UK and Ireland distributor Hybrid Services.

Having built its reputation as a fast, reliable and service led partner for screen and litho consumables, YPS will continue to serve these markets, but will focus on introducing new opportunities in wide format production to printers in the North East of England. To reflect this multi-disciplinary approach, the YPS logo has become an eye catching rainbow motif – designed to be a visual reminder of the broad spectrum of products and services it now offers.

“We realised there was an opportunity to build on our excellent channel and brand loyalty in the North East by introducing wide format opportunities to our customers,” explains Garry Brown, managing director of YPS. “Our rebrand reinforces that we are the perfect specialist technical partner for all those in the wide format print space – particularly businesses looking to take advantage of the possibilities offered by digital print.

“Resultantly, we were looking for the right partner to provide market leading digital technologies to our channel,” Brown continues. “We quickly identified Mimaki for its renowned range, and for its UK distributor Hybrid Services, which has the same, prominent customer service ethic as we do. Together, our goal is to increase customers’ profitability and competitive advantage through the Mimaki range of digital products.”

Hybrid’s national sales manager John de la Roche welcomes YPS to the Mimaki reseller channel, citing the company’s strong reputation in the North East as key

to its appointment: “We’re delighted to be working with Garry and his team at YPS. The company’s experience within the graphics market puts it in a strong position to supply and support our products.”

YPS will soon launch a new demonstration suite to give interested parties the chance to investigate the broad range of Mimaki technologies on offer. Visitors will be able to see the Mimaki JV33 family and the UJF-3042FX flat-bed desktop printer, alongside a range of complementary products, including the latest SignLab and Colorgate software, plus cutters and laminators.

The partnership between YPS and Hybrid Services has already proven successful, with two Mimaki machines snapped up by businesses within days of the agreement being active. Display and brochure printer PPD has invested in a Mimaki JV33-160, the popular 1.6m platform for durable outdoor graphics, while Aztec Colourprint has made its first foray into digital with a 1.3m JV33-130. Both companies will benefit from the JV33 platform’s improved print-head accuracy, which offers a 30 percent increase in production speed, and the unique Mimaki Uninterrupted Ink Supply System, allowing the machine to print continuously unattended – a significant boon in cost and productivity for smaller PSPs.

“The early success of our agreement with Hybrid Services to supply Mimaki equipment is testament to our philosophy of providing a personalised service with a promise to offer the best value for money,” concludes Brown. “In the current economic climate, PSPs value return on investment greater than purchasing the cheapest kit; we support our customers every step of the way to deliver exactly that.”for further information about YPs’s products and services, please contact: hazel watt at [email protected], by calling 0191 256 6889 or Garry Brown at [email protected], telephone: 07776 296788. www.yourprintspecialists.co.uk.

PromoTIoNAL products company, Farndon House is visibly benefiting from a refreshing approach to product diversification with a strong customer base and hard won trade work contracts bolstering its turnover. Based on the outskirts of Chester, the company’s wide ranging production capabilities and focus on product quality rather than pure price have seen it go from strength to strength – even in tough economic times.

“I’m confident in saying that Farndon House offers as comprehensive a range of garment products as you’ll find anywhere else in the North West,” states Mark Ford, the company’s managing director. “The diversity of what we offer sets us apart from our competitors and helps iron out the trading peaks and troughs.”

With screenprint, embroidery, direct to garment and digital print capabilities in house, and the majority of jobs arriving in to Ford’s production team requiring some sort of artworking, the workflow begins with assessing the best route for the production to take.

“We look at each job individually,” he says. “Working out the best way to produce it ultimately benefits the customer as we have such a broad range of techniques available to us.”

The company’s Mimaki CJV30 printer/cutter sits at the heart of their digital print operation and enables them to not only produce the core full colour print and cut garment decoration but is a solution that has taken them into new areas too. Banners, stickers, printed bags and posters are all value adding goods that Ford’s team has added to Farndon House’s product portfolio. “If a retailer comes to us for one requirement, we can offer other merchandise too,” he confirms. “They get to deal with one supplier, making life easier for them and ensuring a consistency of design throughout.”

Ford has grown the business through a combination of strong customer retention, local exhibitions, B2B networking but most importantly,

recommendations from his existing clients. “Some of our biggest contracts have come about through word of mouth,” he states, pointing to the power of a positive reputation. “It’s no secret that the way we work with our customers has brought us new business.” he continues. “Providing our customers with a ‘one stop shop’, respecting their trading relationships and regularly looking to introduce them to new products has benefitted both parties in the long run.”

Working with big name clients such as Umbro, Aldi and Sega, the company produces a broad gamut of tools to formulate integrated promotional marketing campaigns. Aldi for example, makes use of PVC banners, posters and t-shirts for its “car park sales” and new store openings. Farndon House works directly with the store group’s northern office tailoring campaigns to specific stores, delivering a personalised and strongly branded solution. Taking a different approach; sportswear brand Umbro makes use of Farndon House’s on-demand service, shipping boxes of hundreds of ready made garments at a time, which are then imprinted by the company with specific promotional messages and branding.

Farndon House invested in its latest wide format inkjet printer through Mimaki reseller, Signmaster Systems, and runs it in a well equipped studio alongside direct to garment inkjet technology, additional print and cut kit as well as smaller format desktop solutions for its dye sub work. Using

Mimaki SS21 ink on the CJV30 the company not only benefits from the rebate linked recycling scheme run by Mimaki distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd, but achieves the quality of output its become synonymous with.

Be it a dye sublimated mug, pull up banner, 200 hoodies or a whole suite of promotional tools, the team at Farndon House is well placed to offer a solution. follow them on Twitter @farndonhouse or for further information visit www.farndonhouse.com or www.hybridservices.co.uk

x1 and LF3 make ideal start up package

Atlantic launches Technical services website

ImPrEssIoN Technology Europe (ITE) has put together a package of printer and finisher that will satisfy the demands of both the established printer looking for extra output and businesses looking for a cost effective entry package. The combination of the Rapid X1 and the Compress Eclipse LF3 gives the user the ability to print and convert standard continuous blank stock into high quality, full colour labels fully cut and slit ready for application. Although promoted as a package each part is available in its own right and represents the highest quality in its class.

The Compress LF3 is the new part of the package. Although it was only introduced to the market at the recent drupa exhibition it has already made a name for itself with machines being delivered to major markets around the world including Australia, India, Europe, USA and, of course, the UK. Designed and developed totally in the UK by ITE, the LF3 is a compact unit that handles intricate cuts and trims as well as full slitting giving a finished label ready to apply. So nothing new there you may say but the specification goes much further than that. This machine also handles lamination which comes as a standard part of the package. Compact and self contained would be a good description for this impressive piece of kit as, coming in at 1000m x 600mm x 780mm, the LF3 does not demand a lot of space. It boasts a maximum label length of 305mm with a cut width of 100mm to 220mm and can handle a roll size up to 300mm (with a maximum core size of 76mm). It uses single point registration for cutting and has full waste matrix removal and rewind. The packaged software, WINPLOT, utilises Windows operating systems and has plug-ins for both CorelDraw and Adobe Illustrator. Although it can handle unprinted media it really comes into its own when teamed up with the Rapid X1 to produce fully finished high quality printed stock.

The Rapid X1 is the established part of the package having been around

for a while now. This table top unit utilises Memjet print head technology to produce very high quality printed labels at an amazing speed. The in-line print head does not move, as with other printers, but instead uses 72,400 nozzles to deliver 744,000,000 droplets of ink per second allowing delivery of labels at a print speed of up to

18m per minute. This amazing little machine has an unwind and rewind system and even

comes with optical sensors for pre-cut labels. Using a five colour system (CMYK+K) the print quality is stunning with sharp images and vibrant colours. Best of all though is the fact that, as this is a digital printer running from a standard Windows PC, each label can be individual so whether you are working on a long or short run, the cost to you is the same. This opens up the lucrative small order market to label printing that isn’t constrained by higher set-up costs normally associated with small runs.

Not only is the Rapid X1 easy to use but the developers have even factored maintenance into the equation with the print head being user changeable thus avoiding expensive call out charges.

With both machines offering a cost effective solution each, on its own merit, stands as an individual piece of production equipment that will fit into any environment whether that is an established printer or a start-up business. Put them together though and they take on a whole new character and represent high production without the buyer having to commit lots of space. The small footprint of both models makes them an easy addition to any plant but especially to those where space is at a premium.for more information about iTe or the products they supply or to find your nearest distributor call them on 01623 861173 or e-mail them at [email protected]. ExhIBITIoN organisers Faversham House Group has announced the return of the “Green Trail” for their Sign & Digital UK show in 2013. After a successful introduction last year, they are once again calling for exhibitors to join their “Green Trail”, following on from its successful launch at the exhibition in 2012. The Green Trail highlights products from exhibitors that can display either an eco-friendly, environmental or ethical element.

Alan Caddick, marketing manager of Sign & Digital UK explains; “The Green Trail was very successful at Sign & Digital UK 2012 with exhibitors noticing an increase in discussions around eco-friendly products and visitors now actively enquiring about energy consumption and recycled materials. It was only the first year last year and it went really well – so much so that we are running it again for 2013 and this year we will be making more of it. We invite our exhibitors to make us aware of any products being shown at the event that will fit this new initiative.”

“There will be a good mix of products on the Green Trail list including ink

and media manufacturers, printers, and recyclable display products,” he added, “Not to mention sustainable solutions from the digital signage sector.”

The Green Trail will be heavily promoted through the extensive marketing campaign leading up to the show and highlighted in the show guide and floor plan so visitors can easily identify which stands are taking part. All applications for the Green Trail will be vetted to ensure that they actually do display either an eco-friendly, environmentally aware or ethical element

to the product, so it’s important that exhibitors wishing to partake can demonstrate this side of their product to the organisers.

Exhibitors can register their products now for the inclusion with the show organisers directly by emailing [email protected] and include “Green Trail” in the subject. for more information on sign & digital uK 2013, please visit www.signanddigitaluk.com or follow us on twitter for the most up to date news @signanddigitaluk

ArJowIggINs grAPhIC, A manufacturer of innovative environmental paper

solutions, has launched a new video (see it on You Tube) that demonstrates the feel good factor in using recycled papers, with a comic twist.

The video, set in an office environment, exhibits the little things a person can do in their everyday life to lead a greener lifestyle, from cycling to work, to recycling paper and even a cheeky good deed for a colleague. The video illustrates the positive outcomes of being green in a humorous way and hopes to encourage viewers to do their bit to reduce their environmental impact.

The video follows on from Arjowiggins Graphic’s ‘It Feels Good Campaign’, which focuses on the wider benefits that choosing to be sustainable can have on your business.

Shannan Hodgson, Corporate Affairs Manager at Arjowiggins Graphic explains the idea behind the video: “Our new video highlights the little things we can all do to help the environment - and sometimes our

colleagues - such as using recycled paper. Although they may seem like small gestures they all add up and we should celebrate that.

“Making the effort to be sustainable often has a number of effects that are not widely known, for example, did you know that on average ten

more jobs are required to recycle an item of waste rather than send it to landfill. This video reinforces that message by using humour to show that it is not always the obvious things that you do that have a positive affect.”

One small change that businesses can make is choosing recycled papers. Arjowiggins Graphic has made it easy for companies to show their environmental savings through its Environmental Benefit Statement. The Environmental Benefit Statement (EBS) is a bespoke calculation for an individual print job that explains how much landfill, water, electricity, wood and greenhouse gases are saved by choosing recycled papers over virgin fibre papers.

MX Digital Full Colour Multifunctional Systems

Natural, Intuitive Touch-screen control utilisingenergy-savingtechnology for low running costs

Embrace the future, today Introducing the world’s first multifunction systems to be equipped with ‘finger-swipe’ touch control — a design evolution which is rapidly becoming an industry standard.

Similar technology has already revolutionised smart phones and tablet PCs. Simply touch or tap the screen, then flick or slide for fingertip control of every document, function and setting.

Using a digital interface has never felt so natural.

Choose to be productive The new Sharp MX range produce top quality colour at full speed and come with two-sided printing, copying, scanning and robust security as standard. But even though they are among the smallest A3 colour MFPs in their class, you can also add a wide range of extra-value options to raise productivity throughout your print room.

Print fi nishing is our speciality.

One day all printers will be driven like this…

To discuss trading up to a sharper quality in print contact Simon Sutherland on freephone 0800 083 5908

Sharp are continually improving the performance of their colour printers by incorporating the most innovative technology /This is Why the new MX- range are the world’s first multifunction systems equipped with ‘finger-swipe’ control technology.

ThErE ArE TImEs when I would prefer to be working in a nice quiet studio, but there are others when the overheard dialogue from

customers is a useful prompt, even if it is irritating at the time. Usually the exchange revolves around the cost of producing something, the turnaround time and the quality. Rarely are the three elements compatible, but in juggling the options often some choice pearls drop from otherwise predictable banter.

One such revolved around the regular dispute over the chargeable amount for creating, or preparing artwork for print. Some customers assume that just because they have spent some time on the computer they should not pay any extra to make a file suitable for print regardless of the state they are presenting it in.

This is a cost we are expected to absorb. Not easy when it is often hard to assess how much work is involved, and therefore how long it will take, especially as the customer will inevitably want it as quickly as possible and as cheaply as possible.

Then there is the cost of producing original artwork, judging how long it will take and thus how much to charge. The two issues are very closely related as it may be better to spend a little bit of time creating something professional for print rather than waste time trying to rescue the customer’s best offering.

The problem of quoting on producing artwork is often the customer’s perception of how long it will take and what it is worth. It may only be a ten minute job initially, but if there are changes and extra proofs, as we know it could quickly become an hour in real time, not counting the disruption to workflow often created by the ping pong to and fro of different versions awaiting approval.

With that in mind I was rather pleased this particular customer chose to take responsibility for design into her own hands, given that she had already spent half an hour at the counter discussing paper, price and quantity options at great detail. The warning lights were on yellow alert. This ‘Christmas Extravaganza’ special might take till next Easter to sort out.

What initially irritated but later amused me was her dismissal of our estimate of an hour’s artwork involved on the basis that she knows someone who had a computer and could do things in Photoshop. I look forward to the results with interest, but little expectation.

The problem is that ‘Photoshop’ like ‘Hoover’ has become one of those descriptive words that covers a multitude of items, as well as the actions undertaken, and they are not all the same or even equal. Nor are the abilities of those who say they can use it.

I have been using Adobe’s Photoshop, in various versions, for ten years now, both processing images and printing, but I would not consider myself an expert, just experienced. However there are many who consider themselves ‘wizards’ who do not deserve a pointy hat and sparkly wand.

One of the problems of perception is the multiple incarnations of Photoshop since it was created some twenty years ago, and how much the software has evolved since its basic beginnings, as well as the number of alternative image manipulation programs in popular use. They may share the same function but not the similar performance.

Adobe itself may cause some confusion among the non-specialist as it has three current Photoshop products – Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom. Each are completely different and designed for particular applications. Photoshop itself is obviously the premium product both in price and specification. Photoshop Elements is not, as many think, a watered down version but a distinctly different approach. It shares some of Photoshop’s utility but has a much more user friendly control panel, easy read tool icons and a number of quick-fix features, as well as an organiser for images and, most importantly, print layout.

Lightroom is quite different in that it is designed to be a photographer’s tool for batch processing and non-destructive editing of RGB image files. The whole interface is quite different, as are the tools and adjusters. Like Elements, it cannot work with CMYK print files or vector files, so it is not suitable for pre-press for litho printing, so it’s not the complete solution in the digital studio, but it may be part of the solution.

The vast majority of customer files now submitted to the print shop, whether digital camera images, scans or web downloads, are native RGB, and most digital printers will handle three channel colour input with no perceptible difference in output. Certainly large format inkjets with a wider colour gamut than CMYK prefer it. Only print processes requiring four colour separations require special attention and this may be now only a small proportion of the bureau service.

This is worth considering as the whole issue of upgrading hardware and software, which has been a prominent feature of this column recently, becomes more urgent. If you are in the fortunate position of being cash rich and can afford to replace all of your studio kit with the very latest, and best offerings, all well and good.

But if, like most print shops that have been in this business some years I suspect, you are having to juggle the balance between essential and non-essential purchasing it could be of value to examine what you actually need. We may be print on demand, but we are also purchase on demand. The days of having one computer that did everything are long gone. You are likely to have quite a few, as you have digital printers and most likely network connected. But are they all needed to do the same tasks or, like the printers, you will select a particular one for a specific task.

In this case you may want to consider a more mix and match approach to your updating of hardware and software. If you need to provide a full design service for litho printing and signage, then you will need the full Adobe Creative suite, at least one modern version of it and a computer, PC or Mac, capable of running it efficiently, together with an operator trained to put it to best use.

However for much of the daily chores, a more simple choice may not only be cheaper, but more efficient in machine and staff time, and consequently more productive. The Adobe CS package is a seriously complex collection of software even for someone with experience of the range of products. For some of the more basic day to day tasks, it might actually be more cumbersome – like taking a Ferrari to do the shopping run. And in untrained hands, equally difficult to manage.

You have to have some file management software. You can no longer get away with basic Acrobat opener and expect that to do everything you need. But that doesn’t mean you have to provide the full studio facilities to customers who don’t expect to pay for the service or appreciate the skills involved. With most home and business programmes capable of saving PDF originals there is no reason why the responsibility for providing print ready artwork can’t be pushed back to the customer, at least to make them understand what is involved. Now I know we are getting a load of issues with customer saved PDFs, but that’s all the more reason to push the liability back in their direction, rather than try and sort it at our expense. Well it’s got to be worth a try! Perhaps a switch to more Jpegs and Tiffs is the answer.

Adobe Lightroom will handle those, as long as they are in RGB, and is particularly useful if there are lots of image files that need to be sized and printed individually, or in several print packages. It’s very handy for sorting through camera memory cards containing lots of pictures to find the right one for printing or saving to go on a mug or T-shirt.

It’s also extremely good at restoring scans of old photographs, or even new ones that have been badly shot. Much simpler in operation than Photoshop, in develop mode, remarkable editing feats can be done with very little training

22 | DIGITAL IMAGING | QUICK PRINT PRO | December 2012-January 2013

required. It may not have the whistles and bells of Photoshop, but it will do some regular print shop jobs much quicker and more accurately…and it’s a tenth of the cost.

When a customer brought in a well faded photo of a old racing cyclist, it didn’t look very promising at first glance, but with a decent scan and no more than ten minutes in Lightroom, something reasonable could be retrieved from the original.

As Lightroom has become a photographer’s favourite, lots of helpful advice, training videos, and develop pre-sets are freely available on the internet, so any reasonably competent member of staff should be able to find their way round the control panel.

There are also Plug-ins available from several companies like One Software, and Topaz. These are not stand alone programmes but work to enhance and improve operations in Lightroom and Photoshop itself. These either do things that the programme alone can’t do or do it much quicker. The complete Photoshop has become quite a lumbering giant as its range of functions has expanded, so a plug-in becomes worth considering as a short cut, or as an extension of actions.

I’ve been particularly impressed with Nik software having previously used a combination of Lightroom and Photoshop to edit photos. Nik offers a comprehensive set of options for manipulation of colour, black and white, and sharpening of images with a particular facility for print output. This is much more for the expert than the amateur, although a selection of pre-sets helps you chose the direction of your editing.

Once you get the hang of it, it will really save you time that would otherwise be used up in Photoshop with adjustment layers, paths and the like.

In comparison, Adobe Elements is designed to be entirely user friendly and functional. It is similar enough to Photoshop in layout not to confuse anyone who hasn’t used it before, which is often the issue with alternative software packages.

As mentioned, it doesn’t have the full professional range of functions, but if it is only basic editing that is wanted, it often isn’t needed. The text options are quite basic, but it does have drop-in frames, backgrounds and artwork that would otherwise be time consuming in the more sophisticated option. A cute tool is the cookie cutter, for example, which will drop a preset shape like a heart onto an image. How many times do you do that for a T-shirt or a mug?

Other useful things include automatically dividing multiple scanned photographs, and the ability to batch process a number of files without the need to record an action, as required in Photoshop. It may not be the full monty, but again, it’s a tenth of the price and its user friendly face may be more suitable for less experienced staff.

All of the programmes are available as a free trial, for thirty days in Adobe’s case, so well worth a little consideration, and a short evaluation. Nobody makes a specific programme for the print room, other than specific large format RIPs, so it’s always going to be a compromise on what to use. The mix and match option would seem to be a viable solution.

What we may become used to calling the tablet generation of customers who expect things to be done instantly at the push of a button, and an hour, not a day will seem a very long time.

“PrINTwEAr & PromoTIoN LIVE is the perfect way to explore the business

opportunities in this vibrant market,” says sales manager, Tony Gardner. “If you’re looking to expand your business, this is the show to be at. All of the big names in direct to garment printing, sublimation printing and transfer printing will be there offering a superb choice of equipment and supplies, from Roland DG, Midwest, Resolute DTG, J&B Sewing Machine Company, Amaya Sales UK, and Nova Chrome, to TheMagicTouch, Xpres, Marvel Press, GS UK, Target Transfers and more.”

One of the key things about the show is that it offers affordable solutions, from table top manual screen printers to low cost transfer presses, single head embroidery machines, engraving machines and promotional merchandise blanks.

And if you’re looking for imprintable garments, you will be spoiled for choice, with all of the biggest distributors on board along with the biggest brands in the printwear industry — all keen to show their latest collections for 2013.

Adds Tony: “Virtually every aspect of promotional wear, headwear and accessories, is covered, from corporate and workwear, to leisure, sports and teamwear, schoolwear, hospitality wear and more.”

Tony Gardner is delighted with the overwhelming backing that the industry has pledged to the 2013 show. The continued growth of Printwear & Promotion LIVE follows a successful 2012 show, which saw an increase in visitor numbers, a 33% increase in stand space and a total of 108 stands.

For 2013, there will be some 120 stands, including names that are well known within the

printwear market, alongside new brands. It all adds up to a cracking experience for visitors with a 2013 show that will be 50% bigger than last time!

Adds Tony Gardner: “The fact that 90% of the stands have already been sold is a ringing endorsement of the power of Printwear & Promotion. We have extended the floorspace twice to meet the demand!”

Continues Tony: “This year’s visitor numbers were up by more than 500 on the previous year, at 4272, and more than 2,500 companies were represented.

“A key thing this year was that visitors were actually buying equipment AT the show and they have continued to invest in equipment since then. That trend looks set to continue, with equipment suppliers — certainly amongst the direct to garment printing and embroidery equipment suppliers — all doing great business as a result of

Printwear & Promotion LIVE.”He continued: “As a result, some of those

suppliers are coming back with even bigger stands for 2013, an example of which is Midwest Machinery Ltd who have booked two stands to show an extended range of embroidery, direct to garment and laser cutting machines.”

All of the major embroidery suppliers will be at Printwear & Promotion LIVE, so if you intend to invest in embroidery equipment, it will be easy to check out what’s on offer, all under one roof. Another supplier to look out for is Barudan who will be displaying improved single and multihead machines.

The size of this year’s Printwear & Promotion LIVE and the scale of next year’s show, is a very positive sign that the printwear industry has come back with a bang, especially on the machinery supply side, adds Tony Gardner.

The show promises all the popular ingredients that make for a great day out: • New products, equipment and services;• Free expert advice on tap;• An industry leading seminar programme;• A professionally choreographed fashion show;• Show offers, deals and discounts;• Free samples and 2013 brochures, and hands

on demonstrations.Printwear & Promotion LIVE runs over three days, from February 24th to 26th in Hall 12 at the NEC, Birmingham. But the great news is that with the show opening on a Sunday, you don’t have to shut up shop to attend. registration is free, online at www.printwearandpromotion.co.uk

FAVErshAm House Group, organisers of Sign & Digital UK show has announced the launch of a brand new website for visitors and exhibitors. Taking place next year at the NEC, Birmingham from 30 April to 2 May 2013, Sign & Digital UK has grown to encompass traditional sign making, digital signage, printwear, wide format digital printing, visual display techniques and finishing and is the only annual show of its kind in the UK.

The new website www.signanddigitaluk.com boasts a wealth of features on the home page with direct links through to the latest show news and features, such as highlights from the 2012 show, the 2013 Awards and Networking Event and coverage of the all new Learning Zone. There are also ‘information panels’, such as the latest exhibitors to book, a press and PR section and live Twitter feed. ‘Quick link’ panels, clearly defined for visitor and exhibitors, allow users to navigate quickly to relevant information. The website also has advertising opportunities for exhibitors to increase their profile and there is a stronger focus on social media to reach all audiences. The website for the 2012 cycle of Sign and Digital UK attracted over 41,500 unique visitors and the new improved site is expected to have an even bigger impact.

Direct links to show features are easily accessed via the clearly defined menu and includes information and updates on the New

Learning Zone, The Green Trail, Signmakers workshop and the free seminar series.

With the new website featuring social media links prominently the organisers are encouraging all signmakers and print service providers to follow them on Twitter

(@signanddigitaluk) and LinkedIn (Sign & Digital). Followers will be able to get the inside scoop on what’s happening at

Sign & Digital UK 2013 – and be able to get live updates during the show! For Twitter feeds, follow #SDUK.

Alan Caddick, Marketing Manager for Sign & Digital UK comments; “Last year some exhibitors really took social media by the horns, posting show news to Twitter and running special “Twitter Only” offers. Following what’s happening at Sign & Digital UK on Twitter is definitely the best way of ensuring you get the most up to date information about what’s happening, as it’s happening.” You can register your interest to receive regular updates and be the first to hear when registration becomes live at www.signanddigitaluk.com.

oUr roving reporters promised you some feedback regarding the fourth London Calling event and yes it really did rock at the British Music Experience at the 02.

Front end. Now to find some revolutionary pre-press solutions at a ‘finishing exhibition’, our congratulations are due to all at Duplo for putting on an all round web to print event. We are now working with Vpress on all the projects directed from our readership, so a working holiday for us over Christmas and an extra present for all in the New Year.

Print engines. A renowned digital printer supplier, Balreed, treated us to witness Konica Minolta kit doing what other manufacturers can only dream of. Even our own KM does not produce 4page landscape A4 brochures from one sheet. This long edge ‘banner’ printing through a paper bypass only works with the Balreed blue printed versions of kit. You can upgrade your present service on existing Canon, Ricoh and KM printers, to a company that loves quick print professionals across the whole of the UK. More on this next year samples available on request for unique print products that will sell for a premium.

Finishing. As well as the expected range of fantastic Duplo print plant; the company also unveiled a series of UK firsts including the new IDEAL 4860-ET guillotine and Eurofold CP-375 creaser perforator. Both machines are targeted at the SRA3 digital printer market, offering exceptional output for their footprint size. These are right up the instant printers street, designed for QPP readers.

Comment. Duplo sold £463k of equipment at this London Calling Rocks event at the O2. Over the two days almost 160 companies attended making it one of the most successful events in the series. For the first time ever Duplo partnered with Vpress, Balreed and Fujifilm allowing the company to show a full web-to-print-to-finish line.

Commenting on the show, Marc Legge, Marketing Manager at Duplo said, “Yet again, we’ve been delighted with London Calling. To welcome more than 230 people over the two days shows there is a great appetite for this type of event. As a manufacturer, we are always looking to take orders at exhibitions but it is just as important to build pipeline and relationships and this annual show is a big part of that for us now.”

TroPhEx is the exhibition for the trophy, awards and personalisation industry whether you are an exhibitor or a visitor. The show attracts many companies who exhibit every year as well as many new ones.

Visiting Trophex will help you to diversify and grow your business. Look for new suppliers and get better deals, find out about new innovations and products on the market. Mimaki small format family grows print profitmImAKI’s recently expanded family of UJF desktop LED UV printers, with its unrivalled versatility and high quality reproduction gives printing companies the potential to print to an almost limitless range of materials, objects and substrates, opening up a whole new world of profit making possibilities.

The multi-award winning small format UV LED flatbed printers have seen tremendous success following the release of the UJF-3042 in 2010. The original desktop A3 UV printer pioneered its way into the personalisation and gift market with its capacity to print high quality images direct to rigid substrates and its cost-effectiveness on short runs. This versatile product is able to print onto substrates that are impossible to use in a conventional model such as plastic, metal and wood.

Since then, the upgraded UJF-3042FX was released in October last year, which has additional features such as an automatic primer function, removing the need to manually prime the substrate (where required) and opening up a vast number of substrates to print onto directly. Along with the upgraded machine came availability of flexible ink for the UJF-3042FX. The new LF-140 stretchable ink has an extended colour gamut, is stretchable up to 140% allowing for printing onto flexible labels and formable media, giving excellent adhesion.

At Sign & Digital UK in April 2012, the eagerly awaited Mimaki UJF-3042HG was launched, featuring an expanded head height of 150mm allowing much larger media to be printed to. Additional features include six colour printing plus white and clear capability which produces appealing, high definition

output with high quality gradations which cannot be achieved as readily with four colour printing. The introduction of a newly

developed white ink circulation system prevents pigment sedimentation that not only improves the yield of white ink for more efficient consumption and reduced waste, but also benefits production throughput with less chance of wastage of valuable substrates. The list of applications for the Mimaki UJF

family is extensive; mobile phone covers, acrylic photo blocks, stationery, ceramic tiles, glassware and metal to name a few. The primer function

of the FX and increased head height of the HG have extended this list even further to include various containers such as jewellery boxes or paint tins as well

as larger promotional items. The newest addition to the family is the larger UJF-6042. This A2 flatbed LED UV printer boasts 1800dpi variable dot photo quality output which delivers highly detailed prints, and a new ball screw type head conveyance mechanism which increases the accuracy of the ink drop placement onto the substrate. This kind of high quality capability is usually found only in very high end flatbed printers, and with no minimum run length, coupled with the ability to

process variable data, highly profitable short run production of premium personalised objects rapidly becomes palpable. The mimaki uJf-6042 will be available for demonstration and to purchase early in 2013, so for further information about the uJf family of led uV flatbed printers, or any other mimaki product, please contact mimaki’s exclusive distributor for the uK and ireland, hybrid services ltd, on 01270 501900 or visit www.hybridservices.co.uk

double your profitrobin smith our money mentor says: cash flows in,

cash flows out, but what’s happening to your business?

doUBLINg your profit is a little like losing weight, move more eat less, spend less and charge more, it’s easy to say, a spot more difficult to achieve. It’s tricky spending less sometimes and we’ll chat about that in the future, what we are going to consider today are those unexpected dips that can befall an organisation and matters that have an impact on cashflow.

Cashflow is the life blood of all companies and if anything affects that negatively it could be the beginning of the downward spiral to financial doom. Every business should have monthly management accounts, tedious I know but how else are you going to know what your monetary situation is? A fall off in sales or too many late payers which means a negative cash situation should be an instant signal that action should be taken. There may be obvious reasons why, seasonal buying patterns perhaps and as long as you understand these and have budgeted for a shortfall this should not be a problem. However an unexpected drop in income is another matter entirely. It is easy to forget that a fall in revenue of 10% in one month needs to be replaced in the next, you have to do 10% better than normal to catch up. If the cash shortfall continues it is virtually impossible to get back to where you would like to be without taking drastic steps, and it might take a bit more than cancelling your next game of golf.

If follows that speedy attention to the problem is needed, reducing prices is not recommended, that just exacerbates the problem, but unloading excess stock might be an option. It is easy to be fooled into thinking that improving turnover is worthwhile, but remember turnover is vanity, profit is sanity and cash reality. Only you can know what are key items you can address but actually getting the money in is one of them. Obviously that means doing a bit of chasing, this is your money you are after, you have invested your time and hard earned pennies, you are entitled to it and the louder you shout the more chance of getting paid. Keep a close eye out for customers in trouble, if they go under, well you might drown with them too. Here are a few things to look out for:

Changes in payment patterns. If your client changes the way they pay or when they pay, take heed and action, this could be a signal that things are not at all right, eg: later and later payment, part payment, requests to increase credit limits (although that may mean they’re doing well) and when payment is made by personal credit card . That last one is a very obvious signal of trouble. If you spot any of these try and get as much money as you can and never increase the credit limit and only alter payment terms if you are convinced that this will definitely guarantee payment. Bringing an enterprise to its knees will ensure you get nothing, but equally you do not want to be supporting something that will ultimately die anyway. This is business and you need to eat, do you want to pay their mortgage or yours?

So a quick resumé, if you don’t have monthly management accounts you cannot gauge the health of your business and take action if necessary. Make sure you get paid, (you should be doing this anyway folks) and monitor the payment patterns of your clients, even a small loss could sink you, especially when your friendly bank manager can’t support you in the way we would all like.

More businesses fail because of cashflow problems than anything else, you don’t want to be one of them do you?

mANy EmPLoyErs ArE fearful that allowing their staff to decorate the

workplace during the festive period is too risky and blame “Health & Safety” as the killjoy. This couldn’t be further from the truth as health & safety regulations will seldom stop you from doing anything but merely require you take sensible and reasonable steps to consider the risks involved and then approach the task in a safe and practical manner.

So, keep it safe and follow a few golden rules• if you’re using hanging decorations then make

sure that your staff are using appropriate and supervised steps and they’re not climbing on desks or worse still on swivel chairs!

• be aware of fire risks, decorations attached to or near light fittings and heaters represent a real fire hazard

• check that Christmas lights are safe and that wires haven’t become detached during storage

• Christmas trees, cables and other decorations can cause trip hazards so be careful that walkways are kept clear

• why not write a risk assessment, often just going through this process alone will highlight potential issues

Simple precautions like these can mean that you and your staff can celebrate Christmas safely and ensure that you still have a full complement of staff in the New Year.

• if you’re having a lunchtime “do”, then staff shouldn’t be returning to use machinery or perhaps driving if they’ve been drinking alcohol

• be mindful of young staff who may be encouraged into drinking alcohol and think of how people are to get home

• make sure that you stay in control, misuse of the photocopier could end in a trip to Casualty!

Long, Long tIme ago, santa was gettIng…

One particular Christmas season a long time ago, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip, but there were problems everywhere. Four of his elves got sick, and the trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast as the regular ones so Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule.

Then Mrs Claus told Santa that her Mum was coming to visit. This stressed Santa even more. When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two had jumped the fence and were out, heaven knows where. More stress.

Then when he began to load the sleigh one of the boards cracked and the toy bag fell to the ground and scattered the toys. So, frustrated, Santa went into the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of rum. When he went to the cupboard he discovered that the elves had finished the booze and there was nothing to drink. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the cider pot and it broke into hundreds of little pieces and made a mess all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found that mice had eaten the straw end of the broom.

Just then the doorbell rang, and irritable Santa trudged to the door. He opened the door, and there was a little angel with a great big Christmas tree. The angel said, very cheerfully, ‘Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn’t it a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?’

Thus began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree.

One day, a grandpa and his grandson go golfing. The young one is really good and the old one is just giving him tips. They are on hole eight and there is a big fir tree in the way and the grandpa says, “When I was your age, I would hit the ball right over that fir tree.” So, the grandson hits the ball and it bumps against the tree and lands not too far from where it started. “Of course,” added the grandpa, “when I was your age, the tree was only three feet tall.”

DrInkers awareA biology teacher wished to demonstrate to his students the harmful effects of alcohol on living organisms. For his experiment, he showed them a beaker with pond water in which there was a thriving civilisation of worms. When he added some alcohol into the beaker the worms doubled-up and died.

“Now,” he said,” what do you learn from this?”

An eager student gave his answer. “Well the answer is obvious,” he

said “ if you drink alcohol, you’ll never have worms.”

true LovePeter was invited to his old friends’ home for dinner one evening. He was impressed by the way his buddy Bob preceded every request to his wife with endearing terms - Honey, My Love, Darling, Sweetheart, Pumpkin, etc.

The couple had been married almost 70 years and, clearly, they were still very much in love. While the wife was in the kitchen, Peter leaned over and said to his host, ‘I think it’s wonderful that, after all these years Bob, you still call your wife those loving pet names.’ Bob hung his head.

‘I have to tell you the truth,’ he said, ‘I forgot her name about 10 years ago.’

whose kID-DIng?1. HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHO TO MARRY? (written by kids)

You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming. – Alan, age 10

No person really decides before they grow up who they’re going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you’re stuck with. – Kristen, age 10

2. WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO GET MARRIED?

Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then. – Camille, age 10

3. HOW CAN A STRANGER TELL IF TWO PEOPLE ARE MARRIED?

You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids. – Derrick, age 8 =

4. WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MUM AND DAD HAVE IN COMMON?

Both don’t want any more kids. – Lori, age 8

5. WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE?

Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough. – Lynnette, age 8. (Isn’t she a treasure?)

On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date. — Martin, age 10

6. WHEN IS IT OKAY TO KISS SOMEONE?When they’re rich. — Pam , age 7 The law says you have to be

eighteen, so I wouldn’t want to mess with that. — Curt, age 7

The rule goes like this: If you kiss

someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them. It’s the right thing to do. — Howard, age 8

7. IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED?

It’s better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them. — Anita, age 9 (bless you child)

8. HOW WOULD THE WORLD BE DIFFERENT IF PEOPLE DIDN’T GET MARRIED?

There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn’t there? — Kelvin, age 8.

And the No.1 Favourite is... 9. HOW WOULD YOU MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK?

Tell your wife that she looks pretty, even if she looks like a skip truck. — Ricky, age 10

what’s your sIgn? How many of you does it take to change a light bulb?

Aries: Just one. You want to make something of it?

Taurus: One, but just try to convince them that the burned-out one is useless and should be thrown away.

Gemini: Two, but the job never gets done, they just keep arguing about who is supposed to do it and how it’s supposed to be done!

Cancer: Just one. But it takes a therapist three years to help them through the grief process.

Leo: Leos don’t change light bulbs, although sometimes their agent will get a Virgo in to do the job for them while they’re out.

Virgo: Approximately 1.000000 with an error of +/- 1 millionth.

Libra: Err, two. Or maybe one. No – on second thoughts, make that two. Is that OK with you?

Scorpio: That secret information can only be shared only with the Enlightened Ones in the Star Chamber of the Ancient Hierarchical Order.

Sagittarius: The sun is shining, the day is young, we’ve got our whole lives ahead of us, and you’re inside worrying about a stupid burned-out light bulb?

Capricorn: I don’t waste my time with these childish jokes.

Aquarius: Well, you have to remember that everything is energy, so…

Pisces: Lightbulb? What lightbulb?

What not to pick up at christmas.

A young lady is driving happily along in her car when she’s pulled over by the police.

The policeman approaches her and asks ‘’ Have you been drinking Miss?”

“Why?” asks the Lady, “Was I all over the road?’”

“No” replies the policeman, “You were driving splendidly.”

The fat, ugly sales bloke in the passenger seat gave it away.

only gropingA salesman decides to have a face lift for his birthday.

He spends £5,000 and feels really good about the result. On his way home he stops at a newsagents and buys the paper. Before leaving he says to the shop assistant, ‘I hope you don’t mind me asking, but how old do you think I am?’

‘About 35’, was the reply. ‘I’m actually 47’, the salesman says happily.

A little while later he goes to McDonalds for lunch and asks the order taker the same question, to which the reply is,

‘I’d guess you’re 29?’ ‘Nope, I am actually 47’. He’s

starting to feel really good about himself.

While standing at the bus stop he asks an old woman the same question, she replies ‘I am 85 years old and my eyesight is going. But when I was young there was a sure way of telling a mans age. If I put my hand down your pants, I will be able to tell your exact age.’

As there was no one else around the man thought what the hell and let her slip her hand down his pants. Ten minutes later the old lady says,

‘OK, it’s done. You are 47.’ Stunned the man says, ‘That was

brilliant ! How did you do that?’ The old lady replies, ‘I was behind

you in McDonalds.’

Scientists at Rolls Royce built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners and military jets all travelling at maximum velocity.

The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.

American engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains.

Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the American engineers. When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken shot out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer’s back-rest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin like an arrow shot from a bow..

The horrified Yanks sent Rolls Royce the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the British scientists for suggestions.

You’re going to love this...Rolls Royce responded with a one-

line memo: “Defrost the chicken.”

Driving forcETwo elderly women were out driving in a large car, both could barely see over the dashboard. As they were cruising along they came to an intersection. The stoplight was red but they just went on through.

The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself, ‘I must be losing my mind, I swear we just went through a red light.’

After a few more minutes they came to another intersection and the light was red again, and again they went right through. This time the woman in the passenger seat was almost sure that the light had been red, but was really concerned that she was mistaken.

She was getting nervous and decided to pay very close attention to the road and the next intersection to see what was going on.

At the next intersection, sure enough, the light was definitely red and they went right through. She turned to the woman driving and said, ‘Mildred! Did you know we just ran through three red lights in a row! You could have killed us!’

Mildred turned to her and said, ‘Oh, am I driving?

I was sitting in the lap of luxury - and then luxury stood up.

I may rise, but I refuse to shine! Love letters, business contracts and

money always arrive three weeks late, whereas junk mail arrives the day it was sent.

Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

Among those whom I like or admire, I can find no common denominator, but among those whom I love, I can.

All of them make me laugh. - W.H. Auden- The Really Good Copy Shop, Birmingham.

A man rushed into the doctor’s office and shouted, ‘Doctor! I think I’m shrinking!’ The doctor calmly responded,

‘Now, settle down…you’ll just have to be

a little patient.’
