OPEN ALL HOURSDO you want to attract new business and increase the turnover of your most profitable print products? You need a Web2print solution that is also easy to drive.

Opening for new business an extra 18 hours a day is the way forward. You won’t even need to replace your Arkwright temperamental till, as your new business will be pre-paid!

Me and Granville have been dreaming of the day we could come into work early and find half a day’s work already arrived in a neat box. While Nurse Gladys Emmanuel is getting her beauty sleep, business cards, flyers, greeting cards and allsorts are being designed and sent to your print shop in a print ready file.

Now in the past we have ranted on about stocking everything remotely associated to print so we can up-sell more products to the same customer base. More sound advice these days is to get out in front of the e-commerce ordering print public and win new customers. Being accountable, accessible and local will be refreshing to those that already shop and buy print online.

Thanks to our leading example Nick Brown at Print Emporium in Bournemouth for opening up his business 24/7, 365 days a year. Nick is sharing his best practice in print on page 26.

Bison Print has recently taken delivery of a brand new Ideal 5222 Digicut guillotine (supplied by Presco UK) at their HQ in the heart of Maidstone, Kent town centre.

“We’re really impressed with the increase in productivity and improved quality that we have gained from the guillotine” says Mark Bidewell, Managing Director at Bison Print.

“The previous guillotine was really good but we found that work was often getting bottle necked at the finishing stage which triggered this investment”.

Mark claims that the guillotine has almost doubled their productivity Bison had originally ordered Ideal’s new released 4860 and were to be

one of the first to own one. However, one of Bison’s stipulations was that the guillotine was modified so that it had side tables which would provide more space to work efficiently. Unfortunately it turned out that the 4860 could not be modified so at the eleventh hour Bison and Presco negotiated a deal on the bigger model.

“Although the 5222 was a lot more money it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as we are already benefitting from the extra cutting space and foot clamping facility the 5222 has”

This is the second Ideal guillotine Bison Print has had. The previous was an Ideal 4850-EP which they had owned from new and worked hard for

the past five years. “We have always been really happy with both Ideal as a manufacturer and Presco as a supplier so it made good business sense to partner with both again” added Markwww.bisonprint.com

Bison Print invest in new guillotine

since April 2008 the price of a First Class stamp has increased by 67% and a second class stamp by 85%. As a comparison over the same period the

price of a litre of unleaded petrol has risen by 30%, from 108p in April 2008 to 139p in March 2013.

Such a big increase in the cost of a stamp is a blow for small businesses already struggling to control costs and maintain profitability in a flat economy.

For many small businesses, postage is an essential and unavoidable cost. In an age of smartphones and social networks, many still rely on printed invoices to collect money from customers; and physical mail remains an effective way to generate new business and build stronger

relationships with customers.Royal Mail’s April tariff change maintains a significant discount for franking

machine users. After five years of smaller price increases for metered mail, there is still a big difference between the cost of a frank and stamp – franking is 22% cheaper for a first class letter (compared to 6% in 2008) and 34% cheaper for a second class letter (compared to 11% in 2008).

These discounts are so great you will save money if you send just six letters a day – perhaps even fewer if you take into account the cost of over stamping.

Containing practical advice from postage experts, Neopost’s new white paper is ideal for growing businesses that are looking to improve the cost effectiveness of their postal activities and covers the following:• The latest 2013 postage price increases• How to comply with Royal Mail processing requirements• How to make savings through:• Pricing in Proportion• Franking• Volume discounts • The ways automation can achieve savings • Money saving tips for outgoing and incoming mail download a copy of neopost’s “smart ways to save money on Postage” white paper today: www.neopost.co.uk

AntAlis and Konica Minolta have joined forces to bring the print industry one of the biggest prize draw competitions seen for years with a total prize fund worth over £100,000. With a Konica Minolta bizhub PRO C6000L as the top prize, plus numerous other worthwhile digital print related prizes such as digital SLR cameras, iMac’s, iPad mini’s, Pantone reference libraries, Adobe software to name just a few, this really is a significant prize bonanza.

This prize draw was launched by Antalis and Konica Minolta who share a commitment to provide a ‘helping hand’ to printers looking to make the transition into digital print and benefit from the potential new business opportunities digital capabilities can provide.

Both companies recognise that their customers need support to grow and develop their business in these challenging market conditions where overall print volumes are declining.

Mark Hinder, Market Development Manager PPD, Konica Minolta said,on this joint initiative, “We are delighted to be working with Antalis on this headline promotion as it highlights the work both our businesses are doing to help enable printers in their transition into digital print.”

With the Digital to Business (d2b) initiative launched last year by Antalis and the Digital 1234 business development programme from Konica Minolta, the support, information and opportunities to work collaboratively with suppliers to help printers transition into digital print continues to increase.

The prize draw will be open for registrations at www.digitaldraw.co.uk until the 28th June 2013. To enter participants need to complete a simple questionnaire. Further tickets into the prize draw can also be awarded based on purchases of Antalis products. Full Terms and Conditions are available at www.digitaldraw.co.uk.

All the prizes available in the digital prize draw have been chosen specifically for their relevance to print or design businesses.

Marian continues, “Of course we also want people to join in, so we have tried to make registration for the draw and the way to earn more tickets as easy as possible for participants.”for full information and to register for the prize draw please go to www.digitaldraw.co.uk, www.konicaminolta.co.uk or for more information about the digital 1234 business development programme go to http://digital1234.biz/en/home.html

HP has announced its record breaking, long run production of personalised labels on HP Indigo WS6000 series digital presses for Coca-Cola’s biggest ever personalised brand campaign.

The campaign, Share a Coca-Cola, was launched across Europe on 1st May.

The campaign is designed to help Coca-Cola engage directly with its consumers in 32 countries. It substitutes the iconic Coca-Cola logo on bottles of Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola light and Coca-Cola Zero with 150 of the most popular first names, nicknames and terms of affection in each country. Supported by a fully integrated marketing programme to connect consumers online, the campaign reinforces Coca-Cola’s position as an innovator within the consumer retail space.

The project combined conventional printing technology with HP Indigo Digital Printing to create 800 million high quality personalised labels.

“Packaging plays a critical role in the Share a Coca-Cola campaign because it connects the physical bottle with online communication channels, including social media and user generated content sites,” said Marit Kroon, marketing manager, Europe, Coca-Cola. “The ability to personalise such a high volume of labels with HP Indigo Digital Presses, while achieving the quality and consistency that Coca-Cola requires, opens up new possibilities for creative campaigns moving forward.”

The project was led by Peter Overbeek from ESHUIS, a label converter based in Dalfsen, Netherlands. It consisted of eight label converters across Europe who coordinated production of the personalised labels on 12 HP Indigo WS6000 series Digital Presses. The presses ran 24 hours per day for approximately three months to produce almost 800 million labels, the largest job on record for the HP Indigo WS6000 series Digital Presses.

“During the months of continuous printing, the HP Indigo WS6000 series Digital Presses have proven to be exceptionally reliable, achieving record productivity and press uptime of 86 per cent,” said Peter Overbeek, managing director, ESHUIS. “With such a strong European network of PSPs using HP Indigo digital presses, the opportunities for brand owners like Coca-Cola are endless.”

The static content on the labels for this project was first printed

conventionally on a 38-micron BOPP wraparound material and then personalised with the names using HP Indigo WS6000 series Digital Presses. All of the HP Indigo Digital Presses used for this project were set to the same configuration and settings for complete alignment and consistency during production.

Additionally, to ensure the Coca-Cola brand colour was maintained across all machines, HP Indigo formulated the Coca-Cola Red Ink. This ink served as the benchmark for all of the conventional and digital printing for the Share a Coca-Cola campaign. It also will serve as the reference colour for Coca-Cola in the future.

Along with the physical Coca-Cola packages, the portal www.shareacocacola.com provides a platform for consumers to experience the Share a Coca-Cola campaign virtually with friends and family across the world. Consumers can use the website to create and personalise virtual cans to send to Facebook friends. They also can share content and find out about local Coca-Cola events.

“There’s a tremendous opportunity for companies like Coca-Cola to better engage their customers by making

their brand and product stand out on store shelves through customised packaging,” said Alon Bar-Shany, vice president and general manager, Indigo Division, HP. “The HP Indigo WS6000 series Digital Presses proved their long-run production capabilities by meeting the needs of a project of this scale on time and aligned with Coca-Cola brand standards.”additional information about hP indigo digital Presses is available at www.hp.com/go/hPindigoPresses, on the hP Graphic arts YouTube channel atwww.youtube.com/hpgraphicarts and through the hP Graphic arts Twitter feed at www.twitter.com/hpgraphicarts.

Mark ‘lumpey’ lumb’s charity Bike Ride

on September the 11th 2013 Mark Lumb, Preseli’s charismatic, handsome, charming bespoke sales manager will be cycling from London to Paris to raise funds for the NSPCC. The ride is 300 miles and will take four days.

It is fair to say that although Mark is undoubtedly an extraordinarily gifted lover he doesn’t have the classic cyclist’s build!! So this will be an especially challenging event for him!!! Please bear this in mind when contributing. You can donate on his virginmoney giving site below, or you may want to contribute via

shirt sponsorship (Preseli will be designing a bespoke cycling shirt to be worn during the ride). Mark’s shirt size is XL so there will be plenty of real estate to get your message on!!!

You can sponsor Mark at the link below and any donations, big or small, for this fantastic cause will be extremely gratefully received: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/marklumb

Mark is willing to entertain any other more ‘creative’ fundraising ideas, like shaving his head and having a blue Mohican or full leg wax prior to the ride, so if you have any suggestions please let Preseli know. Unfortunately, before you flood them with suggestions that he raises funds by being sponsored to stay in France indefinitely after the ride has finished, he has already ruled out permanent exile in France. But any other ideas are welcomed…

HoPe Technology — the Barnoldswick based manufacturer of high end bicycle components — put its recent decision to invest in a wide format Mimaki inkjet printer/cutter down to a desire to replicate its production efficiencies within its print department. With around 100 staff employed across its highly focussed operation, the company has been a proud supplier to the cycling industry since the late 1980s.

Marketing manager, Alan Weatherill has been with Hope since the very beginning and with ultimate responsibility of how his brand is portrayed in bike shops and at events around the country. The quality of output from his department’s new printer was a key factor in his decision to change brands with the new investment. “We need to show the Hope brand off at its best,” he says. “I’m responsible for producing prints that will be seen in thousands of cycle shops around the country so it’s important they’re an accurate reflection of the brand.”

Alan is quick to point out where his company’s strength do (and don’t) lie. “We’re not a print company!” he asserts, “so ease of use was important too.” Referencing the minimal maintenance required on the Mimaki CJV30, he also recognises that a varied demand for output combined with the productivity of the printer/cutter means they’re not running the machine all day, every day. “We needed a machine that was reliable, had low maintenance requirements and that we could use when we needed to.”

Hope invested in its Mimaki CJV30 from Granthams Graphic Technology — a long standing supplier to the company, who,

according to Alan, easily convinced them it was the right move. “Our old printer/cutter couldn’t accurately produce long runs of decals, but the demo we had with Granthams ensured we were confident about making them ourselves.” So cost effective is the process that the company has now ceased to screen print its stickers, preferring to mirror its low product inventory with a minimum amount of marketing collateral held in stock too.

“Our dealers — who are primarily independent bike shops — can request any form of marketing resource from us,” he says. “Hope’s premium ‘Tech Shop’ dealers get even more support and we’re now supplying personalised Hope collateral for them to use in their stores to promote our product ranges.”

That customer list extends to some 1200 accounts in the UK alone and with export making up around 60% of the company’s business, it’s a considerable number of shops to look after, but it doesn’t stop there. The burgeoning cycle industry now includes many races and events and Hope’s consistent presence at these requires branding to be produced too. “We tailor our support for particular events, but the collateral is usually in the form of banners and signage that’s created in-house on the Mimaki,” Alan confirms.

Even as a champion of communication for the company, Alan Weatherill has one admission to make; “Our dealers don’t realise how easy it is produce our own printed output!” The next task for his team is reprinting the many beautifully shot photographs that adorn the corridors and the enthralling museum that houses showcases

of its current and former products, memorabilia and on-loan race bikes from the many pro riders the company has sponsored over the years.

“Window stickers for one of our dealers, personalised bike wash banners for Mountain Mayhem, perfectly cut out slat-wall branding for a Tech Shop or a shot of one of the Hope Factory Racing riders out in the hills — we’ll run it all on the Mimaki,” concludes Alan.hope Technology, its product range, information on its manufacturing processes, dealer network, team riders and more can be found at www.hopetech.com. authorised mimaki reseller Granthams Graphic Technology can be contacted through www.granthams.co.uk. mimaki’s complete range of products is exclusively distributed in the uK & ireland by hybrid services ltd: www.hybridservices.co.uk

new Ricoh Pro c5110s and c5100s

RicoH is adding two new models — the Ricoh Pro C5110S and Ricoh Pro C5100S digital colour cut sheet production systems — to its market leading portfolio of production printing solutions. The light production models are a versatile choice for print rooms (CRDs) seeking high quality in-house print capability, or digital and quick printers. Reaching output speeds up to 80ppm (Ricoh Pro C5110S) and 65ppm (Ricoh Pro C5100S) they are ideal for the production of on demand prestigious marketing material, collateral or client mailings. Both models also feature a new toner formulation and broad media handling. In addition, the small footprint makes them ideal where space is limited.

“The new additions join the Ricoh Pro C901 Graphic Arts +, Pro C751 and Pro C651 digital colour production systems, providing a new choice for those seeking a flexible, reliable and affordable solution to generate professional output every time,” says Graham Moore, Ricoh’s Director, Business Development, Production Printing Group, EMEA.

With Ricoh’s newly developed toner formulation, it has increased its colour gamut by 10 per cent for the Pro C5110S and Pro C5100S. The toner has also been developed to fuse at a lower temperature, meeting Ricoh’s R&D focus to continually reduce the environmental impacts of its products wherever possible. This in turn also ensures a quicker warm up time for increased productivity.

The Pro C5110S and Pro C5100S are also the first Ricoh digital production

printers to feature enhanced toner transfer technology which delivers high quality print results on heavily textured stock – ideal for direct mail and marketing applications. Media flexibility is a hallmark of the two new models, with a new fuser assembly which uses information from the media library to optimise the fuser temperature and pressure combination for each substrate. This technology is ideal for printing challenging applications such as envelopes, where the balance of pressure and heat is critical to maintain a flat and perfectly printed product.

“The ability to print directly onto envelopes with a light production digital colour press in the price range of these systems is a significant customer advantage,” says Moore.

Media flexibility is highlighted further by the ability to print banners up to 1260mm in length through the advanced settings, adding to the wide range of applications options.

The Pro 5110S and Pro C5100S will seamlessly integrate with the Ricoh TotalFlow software portfolio. They also incorporate a number of leading technologies developed for the flagship Pro C901 Graphic Arts +. Among them is the new FS100 platform from EFI Fiery, which is used for the new E42B server. It delivers professional colour management and a fast ripping speed for improved productivity as well as an enhanced Media Library for the storage and recall of a wide range of substrates.

Client flexibility is enhanced with a wide range of compatible finishing options such as folding, booklet making and punching. This includes the Ricoh SR4100 Booklet Finisher with a new square fold capability.

Ricoh has also ensured the new systems are optimised for productivity and improved uptime. LED indicators and synchronised animated instructions act as a helpful guide for operators should they need to intervene during a print run. In addition there is a variety of status lights to keep the operator continually informed. These new systems also have a number of Operator Replaceable Units, enabling clients to make necessary replacements quickly in-house. On the fly toner replenishment will also help to maintain productivity.

“The ability to process more, smaller, diverse job types, quickly and with maximal uptime, is essential to meet client needs in today’s dynamic printing environment,” says Moore. “That was a key design goal for the Ricoh Pro C5110S and Ricoh Pro C5100S digital colour production systems. They will help operations to cost effectively deliver a wider range of print services to meet the challenges faced daily by print organisations.”for more information visit www.ricoh-europe.com

sse Worldwide will launch the Eagle range of highly versatile, small format, UV LED flatbed inkjet printers onto the UK market at FESPA 2013 in London next month.

Developed by DPI DG Printing, Italy, the Eagle UV LED 30 (300 x 1000mm printable area) and the Eagle UV LED 60 (600mm x 1500mm) machines print CMYK and white as standard onto substrates and objects up to a depth of 25cm making it ideal for imaging onto a wide range of products from flat signage to 3D promotional products, gadgets and industrial components.

The Eagle printers use UV inks which are suitable for printing onto a wide range of both flexible and non-flexible substrates and deliver vibrant, wide colour gamut results. Furthermore the use of LED UV drying lamps allows users to print onto heat sensitive substrates.

The Eagle has been engineered to maximise flexibility, quality, production efficiency and return on investment (ROI). Features include: Epson DX5 printheads, which deliver one of the smallest ink drop sizes of any inkjet printer (three picolitre) to produce sharp text and clear images; a unique free

standing wing design which allows easy loading and unloading of the print bed, even during production, to minimise downtime, and a cost effective bulk ink system.

The Eagle includes a dedicated RIP — Whiterip — which has been developed specifically for the printer to ensure the best print quality and production performance. In addition, a web to print front end has been developed specifically for the printer, allowing users to offer a personalised online shop front and streamline their product ordering and production workflow.

Commenting on the launch of the Eagle range, Scott Armitage, SSE Worldwide’s Managing Director, said: “The Eagle is a highly versatile and affordable

machine which fits easily into any production environment and enables companies to print onto a wide range of materials and objects and, as a result, to open up new markets for added value printed products. The Eagle 30 is essentially a quick turnaround, short run machine, while the larger Eagle 60 is a production engine that can play a key role in a developing print business.”www.sseworldwide.co.uk. Xeikon introduces unique Alpine fuser drumHiGH quality digital carton printing on a wide range of materials is now within reach thanks to new technology from Xeikon. The innovator in digital color printing has developed a unique fuser drum called Alpine, which has a flexible outer layer to help to produce smooth and consistent print on uneven and textured media, especially recycled board stocks.

The Alpine 516 fuser drum is part of the company’s Folding Carton Suite. From June 2013 it will be offered as an option for the two 508 mm wide printing presses in the Xeikon 3000 Series, the entry level Xeikon 3050 and high speed Xeikon 3500. These presses can print B2 and longer formats on board for folding carton. The Xeikon 3000 Series of continuous feed simplex presses are designed specifically for packaging and label work. The Alpine 516 fuser drum can be ordered with new machines or retrofitted to existing installations.

Jeroen Van Bauwel, Director Product Management at Xeikon, explains the advantage of the new fuser drum: “The standard fuser drum has a hard surface, so if you have a structured substrate, there is a chance that it only contacts the raised areas, which may result in an uneven gloss level. The Alpine fuser drum has a softer, rubber like coating, which can adapt to the form of the surface and create a uniform look and feel on challenging substrates.”

Print speeds are unchanged with the new drum, which can be used with conventional smooth surfaced card substrates and papers as well as with the rougher textured surfaces.

Jeroen Van Bauwel adds: “The Alpine fuser drum really widens the range of carton materials that can be printed within the Xeikon Folding Carton Suite.

Deliveries of the first drums will start in June 2013. This follows a Beta test period with print sites, including C&M Packing SRL in Timisoara, Rumania, which specialises in printing labels and short run folding carton applications for food retailers and beauty industry.”

Dorel Negru, General Manager of C&M Packing SRL, comments: “We have been testing the new Alpine 516 fuser drum for several months now. It has really enabled us to widen the application range of our Xeikon 3500 digital press, which will help us to grow our business. We are quite impressed with the range of extra substrates that we can print with very good quality, such as Fedrigoni papers and boards, Id Paper, Arconvert materials, together with the well-known label materials from producers such as UPM Raflatac and Avery Dennison.”for more information, visit www.xeikon.com.

A move to the latest low cost UV-curable print technology has quickly reaped financial and speed dividends for Complete Studio Graphics with its investment in a roll to roll wide format machine fitted with a Lightbar UV curing solution supplied by Colorific. Also available as a retro-fit, the installation of this new unit has instantly saved the London and Slough based graphics company significant man hours and production costs in a new system which costs a fraction of a conventional engine.

Located on-site at London’s ExCel, a sizeable proportion of jobs produced by Complete Studio Graphics is in the events area, with exhibition participants relying on being able to get their display requirements turned round quickly and at a high quality. In addition, the company also produces a broad range of general graphics for conferences in other locations as well as for a diverse selection of clients from overseas as well as in the UK.

Formerly, with jobs on flexible materials being produced using its solvent based units, Complete Studio Graphics was always faced with delays after printing and before laminating because of the risk of outgassing. With the addition of the Lightbar solution, finished jobs are now ready immediately, with no time needed for drying, outperforming solvent based production and providing the good durability available with UV-curable inks.

“We needed a machine that would give us a faster way of working but at a low investment price, particularly as this is our first venture into UV-curable technology,” explains Alan Carter of Complete Studio Graphics. “But we didn’t want to sacrifice quality or our ability to maintain attractive prices for our clients who know that our sensible rates and fast turnaround don’t compromise the standard of the work we produce.”

As well as producing banners and event graphics, many of the applications created by Complete Studio Graphics involve large, tiled panels with the emphasis often being on last minute orders which need to be supplied and fitted to demanding deadlines. The versatility and ease of use of the Lightbar unit now gives the company all the benefits and convenience of UV-curable production without the heavy investment cost.

“With Lightbar, we can print work and use it straightaway, which is something that’s impossible with solvent based production,” Carter continues. “We’re now far more flexible and versatile, and the saving on lamination is a huge saving on time and money. UV-curable technology is the way to go.”

Alan was originally looking at a proprietary flat-bed machine with roll to roll capabilities as his introduction to UV-curable print but, with the bulk of his company’s work being on flexible materials, it made even more sense to invest in a machine with the inexpensive Lightbar unit. Although it can be

retro-fitted for just £2,500 to an existing chassis that uses Epson DX4 or DX5 print-heads, he decided to buy the system as part of a new printer, thanks to the extremely low purchase price.

The Lightbar unit has been developed to respond to the clear demand for printers which offer the convenience, familiarity and colour vibrance found in solvent based engines but with the fast drying and high gloss finish associated with UV-curable output. Currently there are large numbers of existing systems using solvent formulations but which have been rendered redundant because of the move away to other ink chemistries. Although latex has found popularity in some environments, in terms of durability and colour accuracy, UV-curable technologies continue to find favour even though initial investment costs are normally relatively high. However, owners of older machines can now modify their units quickly and effectively with the addition of Lightbar and its UV-Light next generation ink.

Lightbar utilises Colorific’s next generation UV-Light inks which combine all the advantages of solvent based formulations with the benefits of UV-curable chemistry, giving good adhesion, very low odour and scuff and abrasion free results. Because the ink doesn’t dry in the nozzles, printhead life is extended, and low running costs are complemented by more environmentally-friendly output. further information is available from shaun holdom at colorific, tel: 01628 560890 or e-mail [email protected]

BUoyAnt siGn & DiGitAl UK DeliVeRs All RoUnD

siGn & Digital UK has announced that 5,677 unique visitors (awaiting audit) attended the event. The show was a huge success with exhibitors reporting brisk sales across the three days. Onsite stand sales for the 2014 show increased by 44% as exhibitors rushed to secure the best positions for next year’s event.

The exhibition was a platform for many new UK and European wide format print and imaging product launches from big names such as Roland DG, Hybrid Services/Mimaki, Epson, Mutoh, MTEX, DYSS and Zund.

The free educational programme, both on-stand and show organised, was well received with sessions covering a huge range of topics including vehicle wrapping, dye-sub printing, routing, Adobe and Corel software and colour management. The New Business Theatre was also extremely well attended, with some sessions left with standing room only. Sessions covered included Marketing, PR, Business Development, Digital Signage, Direct to Garment printing and Social Media

Being based in Halls 3 and 3A again this year meant that visitors to the NEC had a very agreeable travel experience, as the halls are only a short walk from both the train station and the car parks – and the beautiful weather certainly helped keep the buoyant mood afloat!

For the second year running, there was a great twitter vibe at the show under the hashtag #SDUK. Visitors and exhibitors alike were tweeting about their experiences at the show. Including:

n1 Visual solutions: “1st time at #SDUK found gr8 new contacts! But have

a sore arm from all the freebies J now I can’t do any weeding or manual labour”

weedoo signs: “Went up to visit #SDUK yesterday. Good day out, some interesting technology to keep an eye on!”

PrintmaX: “Slowly unpacking #SDUK and looking through the contacts we made. A really successful show once again!”

superwide: “Thoroughly enjoyable time at @signanddigital – it may not have been large, but it was perfectly formed #SDUK

Exhibitors too reported higher sales and enquiries; Brett Newman, Technical Director, Roland DG said, “The show was a real success for Roland again this year. This exhibition is a key component of our annual calendar and once again it’s lived up to our high expectations.”

Duncan Jefferies, marketing manager, Hybrid Services Ltd added, “The 2013 edition of Sign & Digital UK was a very strong show for Hybrid Services Ltd. There was vibrancy to the event and visitors were keen to engage – seeking out new application ideas and revenue streams as well as investing in technology. Our resellers enjoyed strong sales and as a platform to launch three very important Mimaki printers to the UK and Irish market, it proved highly effective.“

“For DPI the one factor that really stuck in our minds this year was the quality of visitors to the show, we had huge interest in the Direct to Textile Solutions and Dye Sub Transfer Solutions we were showing, we believe that the build up to the show created the expectation and that gave us the vehicle to deliver our solutions to the visitors with our aim being to de-mystify the Soft Signage Solution. As DPI we have already signed up for 2014 and look forward to an even larger stand next year.” Stewart Bell, MD Digital Print Innovations Ltd (DPI)

“Esko’s decision to participate in Sign and Digital this year was a difficult one, with the FESPA carnival arriving in London just seven weeks from the closing of the doors at Sign & Digital UK, we were not sure if we could justify exhibiting at both shows. We asked our customers if they would be attending both shows or just one, and the feedback confirmed our thoughts that FESPA and Sign & Digital UK are very different exhibitions. We went ahead with S&D and showed our (very, very fast) Kongsberg XP with 3 KW milling and our latest graphics production software — the i-cut suite, the results from the show proved our decision to be correct! We experienced a 60% increase in leads over 2012’s S&D UK, which was amazing and went to show that the two exhibitions can co-exist on the same small island even within seven weeks of each other.” Paul Bates, Esko Business Manager UK & Eire.

Perfect Colours boasted strong sales of its Hewlett Packard Z6200 series and HP Latex L26500 and L28500 printers as well as lots of interest in the newly launched Omega 2 Flatbed from Durst. Jason Burroughs MD of Perfect Colours comments “The show seemed to be well attended and we had plenty of visitors to our stand which lead to strong sales on the traditional Hewlett Packard signage products. There was also a lot of interest in the new Omega 2 by Durst and this allowed us as a business to connect in a different way with both current and new customers. Our goal for the show was to sell solutions, but also to meet with print providers and understand their current challenges and how we can adapt our offering to save them time and money. On both counts our goal was achieved helped in part by the great variety of attendees from a diverse group of industries.”next years sign & digital uK will be held at Birmingham nec hall 2 on 29th april – 1st may. for more information visit www.signanddigitaluk.com and for up to date regular information on what happened at the show and future stories, follow Twitter @signanddigital or #sduK.

noRtH Print & Pack 2013, which this year included packaging for the first time, exhibitors have hailed a success. Visitor numbers to the Harrogate International Centre saw an 8% increase to the 2011 figures, with 2,421*over three days. The quality of delegates produced a resounding endorsement from exhibitors who confirmed that North Print & Pack continues to play a key role in the UK print and packaging calendar.

Mary Buck, Sales Manager for North Print & Pack comments: “It was clear at North Print & Pack that the show was a key event for print service providers, label printers and packaging converters to attend in 2013 despite the print and packaging industry facing many challenges and changes. We are satisfied with the number of key decision makers it attracted – the hardware and software sales at the show are testimony to this. The rich educational programme has also proved very popular with delegates from the print and

packaging industries, proving the importance of strong educational content to compliment the technologies on show.”

MGI Technology Director, David Evans, agrees: “Our industry is facing serious challenges at the moment, but Informa Exhibitions has done a brilliant job to ensure the right people visited North Print & Pack, proving that this is still a worthwhile show to attend.”

MIS provider, Accura, anticipates a great return on investments from the show. Alan McKillop, Regional Sales Manager, comments: “North Print & Pack 2013 has been a really good show for us to attend, with a steady flow of high quality visitors to our stand over the course of the three days. I expect that we will see an excellent ROI when we follow up on our leads over the next few weeks.”

“For YPS, North Print and Pack was a significant investment, but one that paid off handsomely,” adds Hazel Watt, commercial director at Your Print Specialists (YPS). “The prime objective was to raise awareness of our service led wide format proposition amongst commercial and packaging printers in the north of England, and the show delivered just that. We left with more than 100 strong leads and were delighted with the cross section of decision making attendees, in particular the diversity of businesses interested in our Mimaki range of wide format technologies.”

The extensive VIP programme and compelling educational sessions in The Knowledge Centre attracted nearly triple the amount of VIPs compared to 2011, which contributed to the high quality of visitors observed by exhibitors. This was reflected in the number of sales on exhibitor stands throughout the show.

Konica Minolta UK sold seven production systems to just three key contracts that were secured on day two of the show. Malcolm Glynn, Head of Marketing for Konica Minolta UK, says: “This success is a perfect example of how our consultative approach is enabling companies to grow their businesses through investing in our technology. North Print & Pack 2013 has been a great show for us. We’ve been seeing decision makers and had huge amounts of interest in our KM-1 and B2 sheet-fed UV inkjet press, and other Konica Minolta’s solutions. The fact that they have been spending money with us is very positive news for our industry.”

Visitors to the Morgana stand were able to view a wide range of finishing products, including its 2000S Booklet making system that was launched at the show. Raymond Hillhouse, UK Sales Manager at Morgana Systems Ltd, comments: “North Print & Pack 2013 was the ideal show for us to launch our new 2000S Booklet making systems with the ACF510 feeder. It gave us the opportunity to meet with new prospects and existing customers, with some key decision makers amongst them. We’ve taken a few orders on the stand and have some solid prospects to follow up on after the show.”

On the Ricoh stand, sales of digital presses and software solutions from Ricoh, Pentax and on-stand partners were strong across the three days. Gareth Parker, Strategic Marketing Manager, Production Print, Ricoh UK comments: “With an event like North Print & Pack, the focus for Ricoh is always on the quality rather than quantity of visitors. It gives us a chance to get closer to customers, encourage them to learn more about how digital print can add greater value to their businesses and understand more about how we can support them and their aspirations. Those who visited the Ricoh stand this year were high level decision makers, there to understand our

offering in much greater depth and see our range of hardware and software solutions and added value solutions such as the Business Driver Programme and Ricoh’s IT Services division in the more relaxed environment a smaller, focused show offers. There was considerable interest in our new Pro C901 GA+ and C5110S digital presses as well as our ever expanding TotalFlow range of workflow solutions. Overall, it was a great show and we’re looking forward to continuing our conversations with visitors on how Ricoh can assist them to transform their business in the coming months.”

“Exhibiting at North Print& Pack again has been very worthwhile for Autobond”, says John Gilmore, Managing Director, Autobond. “Our stand was beside the entrance, so we met lots of new and existing customers from all over the UK and Ireland. It was the first time we’ve exhibited our B2 digital inkjet spot UV machine in the UK since it was launched at drupa 2012, and it definitely impressed the visitors to our stand – we should sell many more in the coming months. We also sold two of our new B2 entry-level Micro 52 laminators during the show.”

North Print & Pack 2013 also attracted a number of brand owners, which resonated well with many exhibitors. Paul Briggs, Regional Sales Manager, Labels & Packaging, Xeikon UK, comments: “We are pleasantly surprised with the quality of attendees and the number of brand owners we spoke to over the course of the three days. This isn’t usually a group of people we get to see, so we’re pleased that North Print & Pack 2013 attracted these visitors. In addition, we also had meaningful discussions with new and existing customers from around the country.”

“We met with a wide cross section of the industry interested in seeing the power of personalised promotional and gift cartons printed by RCS on a Screen B2 Truepress and digitally embossed with Scodix, adds Bui Burke, VP Sales, Screen Europe.“Our booth attracted manufacturers, brand owners, retailers, printers and the press — all interested in seeing the potential of a new application. What we showed at North Print & Pack has definitely sparked industry interest.”

Steffen Haaga, Director of Sales, EPS EMEA, EFI, comments: “North Print & Pack is a good show for us to meet with new and existing customers in the North – we can spend time with each of them to have meaningful discussions and to show our complete workflow and how it fits in with other exhibitor solutions.”

David Lee, Managing Director of Focus Label Machinery Ltd, adds: “North Print & Pack was a busy and positive show for us – we met with very positive customers and potential customers and have a number of leads to follow-up on in the next few weeks.”

Jamie Boggis, Sales Manager – Print, technotrans, says: “North Print & Pack offered technotrans the opportunity to announce its move into digital printing. It also raised the profile of our UV ancillaries to the packaging market and to meet up with OEM partners. Harrogate is a great venue; everyone loves to visit.”

K2 International this year shared its stand for the first time with Roland DG UK. “It is important for us to provide our customers with the best solutions for their needs, and the Roland device perfectly complements our flexo solutions,” explains Russel Oddy, Managing Director, K2 International. “North Print & Pack 2013 is the ideal show for us to do business – we’ve had excellent leads which we will follow up on in the coming weeks.”

North Print & Pack also celebrated print’s young talent by playing host to the eighth annual PrintIT! Awards ceremony. Around 200 students, parents,

teachers and awards sponsors congregated on the final day to see the winners in the eight categories, as well as the overall winner, receiving their individual rewards as well as prizes for their schools.

“We’re delighted to be hearing this feedback from exhibitors who committed to North Print & Pack 2013. It’s gratifying to know that we delivered a high calibre audience, which will in turn produce the ROI they’re looking for from attending,” concludes Mary Buck. “North Print & Pack mixed all facets of our industry; print and packaging, analogue and digital, young and old. At a time when we are constantly debating the challenges this sector faces, it was a pleasure to see the community come together at an event with such a rich heritage.”

RicoH HAils — it’s GReAt UP noRtH

RicoH UK has hailed North Print & Pack a success, with hundreds of customers and prospects visiting the stand over the three days of the show, strong hardware and software sales and over 130 qualified leads taken.

Says Stephen Palmer, Director, Production Print, Ricoh UK & Ireland: “For Ricoh, North Print & Pack 2013 was once again a great place to do business and open up meaningful conversations with visitors who want to listen to new ideas. The show has always been a good event to balance the sales process with networking and this year was no exception. I was especially impressed with the quality of the visitors this time around. Most were high-level decision makers there to understand more about how we can support their aspirations and help them to transform their businesses. The whole Ricoh team worked hard in advance of the show to ensure people’s time on the stand was enjoyable and an efficient use of their resources. These efforts paid off, with a busy stand across the three days and a huge amount of

interest shown in our products.” “There was a real buzz around our new solutions, especially the Pro C901

GA+, which was being used to print the show daily each day and the C5110S – announced just prior to the show, as well as our TotalFlow range of workflow solutions. We also introduced our Business Driver Programme, which now includes the new Carbon Balanced Printing module and our IT Services division to a number of customers, who saw the real added value both of these services could bring to their businesses.”

Palmer says the addition of packaging to the show’s remit this year also meant Ricoh was able to get in front of a new group of customers from the packaging sector. “Digital is still in its relative infancy in the packaging sector, and there are many questions from packaging companies around how it can enhance and complement their existing business. The show provided us with a great opportunity to demonstrate this in a relaxed environment and get closer to these customers and encourage them to learn more about what digital print can now offer. “

Stephen concludes: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Ricoh team and all our production partners on the stand for contributing to a great show overall. It has opened up a very strong new business chain for us to work on through the remainder of the year and we’re looking forward to a very positive second half of 2013.”www.ricoh.co.uk

DURinG tHe eVent Natasha Bates, a pupil from Wycombe High School in

Buckinghamshire was announced as this year’s PrintIT! Overall Winner. Natasha was awarded the overall prize of a print related overseas trip, an iPad Mini and Rucksack, XF1 Camera and Memory Card, Pantone Capsure, Mug and Notebook and two printers, all courtesy of Xerox, Kodak, GUA, Fujifilm, Ricoh & Pantone.

Tony Lock, outgoing Chairman of PrintIT!, congratulated all of the finalists of PrintIT! 2012/13 and commented on the importance of the nationwide competition for the future of the print industry, “The entire print and paper industry should be very proud that it has the largest Schools into Industry Programme in the UK. Encouraging talent, youth and energy into our industry is critical to the continued success of print and paper in this digital world. Eight years on the first students that were engaged in PrintIT! are now starting to leave university. This talent will be more likely to choose a career in print and paper. Education is an investment in the future - our future. Let’s all get behind the fantastic initiative and continue the great work that has already started. I have been proud to be a small part of the PrintIT! programme and good luck to Susan and the entire team in taking PrintIT! from strength to strength.”

This year the overall winner of PrintIT! 20012/13 was selected by a panel of print, media and graphic arts experts that deliberated over who, out of the thousands of participating students, would win each of the competition’s 17 subject categories.

Commenting on Natasha’s success, which included winning the prize for Best Wall Poster Richard Moore , The PrintIT! programme Director for Proskills, the standards setting body behind PrintIT!, said: “The entries this year were of a really high standard and all of the finalists were worthy of the overall prize so the judges thought long and hard before reaching their decision.”

Mrs Hill, teacher of the Overall Winner and winner of the Best Teacher Award told us about the day:

“The girls had a great day and were talking to me non-stop about the size of the printers they saw and how fast they were, they were absolutely delighted with their awards and prizes!”.

As part of PrintIT!, students are asked to look at the environmental issues facing print and paper as well as technical issues whilst designing a print based programme to promote Fairtrade products for a supermarket.

This year the entrants designed a wide variety of end products, from leaflets and shelf wobblers through to posters, mobiles, floor decals and aisle and storefront banners.

Kathy Woodward, Chief Executive of the BPIF, a major supporter of PrintIT! said “ The future of our industry depends upon attracting young people with the energy and creativity to allow us to experience our full potential in a multi-media world. Our member companies are fully supportive of this great initiative and will be backing it again in the coming year.”

Richard Moore concludes, “What we have all seen today at North Print and Pack is a glimpse of some of the future talent available to the Print Industry. The whole event has been a great success and it has been an inspiration, not only to see the students enjoying the awards and North Print as a whole, but to see so many of print’s key figures in one place. PrintIT! is a self funding initiative and without the fantastic support of our partners and sponsors it would simply not exist. I thank everyone involved with the programme and ask all those who aren’t to step forward and help.”

All category winning students were presented with a top of the range digital camera donated by Fujifilm and their schools were gifted print related equipment for their Design and Technology departments by Renz, Duplo, Pantone, Xaar, Xerox & Ricoh.

Launched in 2005, PrintIT! is an industry wide educational initiative which aims to encourage young people to consider a career in print.

As part of the curriculum based PrintIT! course, students are challenged to create a print based campaign. Aiming to promote the many varied and stimulating career paths available within the print industry, the PrintIT! competition was extended in 2008 to include Year 9 students (aged 13-14) as well as Year 10 students (aged 14-15) studying for their GCSEs in Product Design and Graphic Products.

PrintIT! is also relevant to the Diplomas in Creative and Media and Manufacturing and Product Design. PrintIT! is led by Proskills UK, the sector skills council representing the print and paper industries. [email protected]

tHe coMPAny HAs put its best spin on the product, emphasising that initially sales have

surpassed previous versions like Windows 7 and XP. But Windows 8 was expected to sweep the world and overwhelm the opposition including the rapidly dominating tablet market. But then there are more devices requiring operating systems than there were when 7 was launched, and considerably more than when XP was king a decade ago. Merely keeping pace with the trend was not enough.

And in listing the Windows history it was interesting that the name Vista had apparently been dropped from the Mircosoft dictionary. That short-lived version had been conveniently swept under the mouse mat. So evidently, after a matter of months, will be Windows 8 which later this year will see an “upgrade” which will be called Windows Blue, and will include radical changes like bringing back the start bar!

The general consensus is that Windows 8 was a step too far for the majority of users. In trying to take a giant leap into the touch screen future, it left the majority of its users way behind, and the new learning curve was just a tad too steep to be accepted by general customers. As I mentioned in a preview some months ago, many businesses relying on Microsoft products have only recently made the step up to Windows 7 from XP. Regardless of financial costs, the loss of continuity and potential disruption of service is just not an

option in a hard pressed working environment. The private consumer may be persuaded by

novelty, and indeed have the time to learn new tricks. But free time for training and education is in short supply in a busy office environment these days. What also strikes me as short sighted is the apparent assumption that what suits the individual at home will also be appropriate at work in an entirely different situation.

Henry Ford, when he launched the original mass produced car, pronounced that you could have any model you liked as long as it was black. You have only to see how many different variations of a single model a car manufacturer now produces to appreciate they now anticipate customer demand, not dictate it.

It often strikes me that in the digital print shop there are many things not quite suited to the real task in hand — not just operating systems, but printer hardware, networks and controls. It’s partly because most businesses do not develop in any conveniently planned way, but react to circumstance, adding things when needed, not necessarily when appropriate. Even less reason to take advice and direction from people who have no experience at all of the working practices.

You might make an impulse purchase in the high street if something attractive in a shop window catches your eye, but it’s not a smart policy in the office. Anything you need to work with, and rely on, needs to be properly evaluated, and tested in

the real world. That’s why the trusted and proven XP system had

such a long life in the work place, no doubt to the frustration of Microsoft’s marketing department. It was not just popular on the desktop, but as the platform upon which other machine systems were based.

Unfortunately operating systems, like old cars, can’t go on forever. They can be patched up from time to time, but eventually the old engine has had enough and becomes slow, unreliable and inefficient. Microsoft has already begun winding down any support and service for XP users and within a year this will cease altogether.

Tha’ts why the question of what replaces it is of such significance to Windows users. Three years is generally regarded as a reasonable period to review the performance of a system in the real work place. Time to sort out the issues, iron out the bugs. That’s why Windows 7 is likely to be the considered option.

Of course it isn’t a simple matter of updating the software, the slicker operating system needs a more powerful engine, so overall computer performance and processing power are important to gain any advantage from developments. What was adequate to launch a task in XP ten years ago, will barely keep the time and date ticking over today. And in another five years ? Everything moves at such an accelerated pace that it’s no longer a matter of keeping up with technology but trying to get ahead of it.

If you are looking for an upgrade of kit it is well worth looking for specifications well over current needs in order to anticipate future demands that will quickly become the norm. Software developers, for example, will always quote the minimum specification requirements to run their programmes so they don’t discourage potential customers. It’s a bit like car manufacturers always quoting the absolute best fuel consumption figures, coasting downhill with no passengers and a healthy tail wind. Stop start slogging in heavy traffic on the M25 will come up with very different figures.

The minimum spec. to run a particular programme will be just that. It will not allow for the fact that you are, in a working situation, likely to have several progammes open and functioning at the same time. This will make a considerable difference to performance and the consequent ability to complete tasks. That this is an essential consideration these days is a measure of how far we have come from just being a copy shop.

Future outlook maybe cloudy? It would seem that, unlike the late Margaret Thatcher, the great technology giant Microsoft is not beyond taking a U-turn, though it will not describe the policy change as such officially. Martin Christie says the cause of this new direction is the miserable reception given to the much heralded Windows 8 operating system.

Page 23: Quick Print Pro June 2013

There is still a role for that glass top on the printer, but such is the input of purely digital files that at any time every computer in the shop may be called into duty, and not all may be able to rise to the challenge.

Put into perspective that when Windows XP was introduced customers were still using floppy discs as a state of the art storage device. That’s 1.4 Mb — or about enough room for a word document with a small photo embedded. With the relentless mathematics of Moore’s law — that the progess of technical development in computing power doubles every two years — we will be as far away from current specifications in five years as we are now from the floppy disc of ten years ago.

Customers expectations of what we can achieve, in time, quality and cost, are also likely to develop at a similar pace. As they are able to create documents on their convenient tablets and phones, they won’t accept that we can’t print them in the time it takes to email them. The more they are detached from the real world by communicating entirely in cyber space, the less they will understand any practical considerations of producing real hard copy print.

Of course the mass-market internet printers have already embraced this potential market making it easy to get your business cards and personal stationery at the click of a mouse.

There is no point tackling their challenge head on, although taking advantage of web features like making it easy for customers to upload files to templates, and calculating costings and turnaround will help work flow.

But the essential and very human interface is that ability of the digital print shop to analyse and advise, correct mistakes and adjust colour, and therefore produce a better product. This is the key selling point, and also why keeping up to date with the technology is vital otherwise the customers themselves will overtake you.

Which logic neatly takes me from Micorsoft to the other great software giant Adobe. Regardless of platform, it is Adobe products, and particularly the ubiquitous PDF, that dominate the printing environment and therefore it is essential to keep abreast of developments. I have previously chronicled the progression of Photoshop, In Design and Illustrator — the basic tools — and their incorporation with other applications into the Creative Suite.

That would seem to have reached its pinnacle with CS6 as the next step is Creative Cloud.

Users have already been able to purchase parts of the suite on line, effectively renting them short term rather than purchasing the complete package. Creative Cloud is a move to get away from selling individual packages altogether, and

replace it with a subscription system that will be on going and will service upgrades and updates automatically.

It would be fair to say this has had a mixed reception among Adobe users, but it’s a development that was probably inevitable in a world that accepts permanent on line connectivity as the norm. It neatly solves any issues of pirate software which have traditionally dogged the product as all users will be logged in and monitored by the parent company. This obviously suits Adobe who will not only plug a loss of revenue, but also receive a more regular flow of cash from subs rather than peaks when customers upgrade.

In some ways Adobe products have been the victim of their own success — so good that customers do not want to upgrade every two years when marketing demands. The useful life of a version of Photoshop and its stablemates can be stretched long after its sell-by date. It becomes an issue in the working place however when features in newer versions are not supported by older applications.

Adobe has always been able to slip in a few novelties in upgrades that make previous versions potentially redundant. Now the argument is that it will be able to do it automatically, and that a continued subscription is virtually compulsory.

In business terms, a one off payment is obviously easier to slip into calculations than a subscription that may fluctuate, but Adobe argue that regular

users will save money in the longer term. There’s certainly plenty of debate back and forth on the internet on the matter, along with projected costings, so it’s worth doing a big of research to see what the options are.

Certainly if it offers the possibility of a more pick-and-mix selection of products it could be a benefit. A single application subscription would be less than £20 a month for example according to current projections.

Although the move is part of the whole trend to take information into the clouds, and react to the tablet revolution, it does not mean you have to be connected to the internet to use the rented software. However if a subscription runs out, any working files saved that are not compatible with previous versions already on the system may not be useable or even accessible.

Adobe’s basic photo editor Elements, still a very capable piece of software, will still be available as a boxed item as will Adobe Lightroom.

Full details of the pricing structure and options are available on the Adobe website. Other software brands are of course available, and it is perhaps an opportunity to have a look at what you actually need when you have a fair number of computers in the shop.

Competitors like Corel may be enjoying the debate at Adobe’s expense but it remains to be seen whether the policy change will seriously affect the position of the market leader. Watch this space.

tHe first billboard ever to create drinking water from humidity in the air has produced 15,000 litres of water in six months.

Launched at the end of 2012, the billboard is now a prominent feature of the skyline in Bujama, a small village community just south of Peru’s capital city, Lima. The climate is oppressive, with some residents of Bujama having no access to a clean water supply. Since the billboard’s arrival, residents of Bujama now have access to an average of 96 litres of drinking water a day.

The unique billboard was co-produced by outdoor advertising owner Clear Channel Peru and researchers at UTEC, University of Engineering and Technology in Lima. Media agency Media Connection BPN and advertising agency, Mayo Draft FCB Perú, have also been full partners in the project.

The billboard cost just US $32,600 to set-up and works by using a panel to trap humidity in the air, transforming it into water. Internally, the panel consists of five devices that extract water vapour from the air using a condenser and filters. The water is stored in tanks at the top of the structure,

and then filtered before flowing down a pipe to a tap that is accessible to all who walk past.

On average, 15 to 18 families arrive at the billboard to access the water every day; with people travelling on foot, on bikes and in cars. Maria Arias is one of the dozens of local people to benefit from the billboard, collecting between 2 to 10 litres for her family every day. Maria describes the billboard as a ‘privilege’ for her community.

Children from the local school (Colegio Franco Peruano Catolico) are another group to benefit on

a regular basis. One class has a running session three times per week; with students stopping to refresh and rehydrate at the billboard as part of every lesson.

The billboard’s success has already been widely credited by international creative community - winning a series awards since its launch, including: • Grand Prix at The Internationalist Awards for

Innovation in Media (New York)• The Festival of Media Public Service Award

(Switzerland)• 2 Silver medals at the ‘One Show Pencils’

awards, for Innovation in Advertising and the Public Service Campaign (New York)

Reacting to the news of the latest award win, William Eccleshare, CEO of Clear Channel Outdoor, said: “This is outdoor advertising at its most inspiring: embracing new technology, working in partnership with a host of agencies and delivering a lasting benefit to the people of Bujama. Clear Channel is proud to have been involved in the project and delighted by the international recognition for the campaign.”

inteRnAtionAl Paper has announced that its PRO-DESIGN range, International Paper’s flagship colour laser paper from its Saillat Mill, is now being offered with Carbon Capture

which is an initiative introduced by leading national paper merchant group, Premier Paper.

The announcement provides a further environmental credential and endorsement of the product’s high sustainability standards and follows the recent announcement of the range’s switch from PEFC to FSC certification, and also the introduction of an FSC certified 350gsm heavy weight paper to its PRO-DESIGN range in August last year.

The PRO-DESIGN range is already known for its high environmental performance, having recently received FSC accreditation the PRO-DESIGN range already carries the EU-Ecolabel and the carbon capture initiative is another significant addition to its environmental criteria.

PRO-DESIGN is produced at International Paper’s Saillat mill in France, which is one of the world’s best performing sites in terms of CO2 emissions. Since 1990, Saillat has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 78%.

The Saillat mill uses thinning from certified forests or those that are in the process of becoming certified, with its main forestry supplies located within just 128km of the mill, reducing any transport related environmental impacts such as CO2 emissions.

Saillat also recovers by-products from the furniture and framing industries which represents 27% of its wood supply. In terms of energy efficiencies and performance, some 88% of Saillat’s energy requirements are met by the on-site production of green energy (biomass).

The Carbon Capture initiative allows International Paper’s customers to effectively “capture” the CO2 emissions from their PRO-DESIGN paper purchases made through Premier Paper by planting native woodland in the UK, through The Woodland Trust and The Woodland Carbon Scheme.

Customers who order papers from the PRO-DESIGN range can choose to capture the carbon used in the manufacture and distribution processes of the paper. The amount of CO2 that has been generated is then calculated.

A certificate and a copy of the Woodland Carbon logo will then be issued, which customers can use on all print jobs produced using papers in the

PRO-DESIGN range that have been carbon captured. This will provide a further enhancement to their brand and their environmental messaging.

Dave Jones, Group Marketing Director of Premier Paper Group, said, “Premier’s Carbon Capture scheme is unique as it works with the Woodland Trust and captures CO2 through creating woodland right here in the UK. We have elected to capture the CO2 from all our sales of PRO-DESIGN sold through the Premier Paper Group and by doing so are making a tangible and practical contribution to the UK environment by creating woodland that we can all visit and enjoy.”

Woodland Carbon is an accredited, award winning carbon removal scheme that is operated under the Government’s 2011 Woodland Carbon Code. Organisations looking to reduce their environmental impact and migrate their carbon emissions can fund tree planting with The Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity. It is estimated that 25m² of native British woodland captures and stores at least one tonne of CO2. To find out more can visit www.woodlandcarbon.co.uk

DURinG this year the QPP reporters researched web2print solutions which resulted in us recommending the PrintShop offered by B2CPrint and available through Almabyte in the UK. You may have seen the articles and features in the last three magazines and be familiar with the trial shop we hope to fully launch soon at www.printshoponline.co.uk

But don’t just take our word for it, in our opinion there is nothing better than a real case study to convince others that it can work for them and to see the benefits. It is fantastic when QPP readers pioneer new services and are prepared to share their best practice in print.

After reading the March magazine Nick Brown at Print Emporium in Bournemouth contacted John Clark at Almabyte for more information. He then discussed this with his wife Jackie (as any sensible man would) but also as she’s his partner in the business, and they decided to proceed and order the system. The order was completed on March 27th and www.printshoplocal.co.uk was launched fully live on May 1st.

It was through no considerable effort on the part of Nick and his team that this super fast implementation was achieved, but credit also has to go to Almabyte and the technical team at B2Cprint that made this possible. In addition Nick contacted Steve Smith of Card Compliance Services who offered him a very competitive e-commerce solution for card payments, which was easily integrated by B2CPrint and has subsequently become one of their recommended payment gateways.

Having decided on the domain, Nick set about changing the look and feel of the website out of the box from B2CPrint. As well as uploading and replacing images to personalise, he was soon adding new products. He already offers photo gifts including phone cases, charity cheques and the not too cheerful yet necessary funeral stationery and that is just the start. As well as this his designer was soon in full swing adding templates and thinking how to utilise the local brand, including some very attractive Dorset business cards.

Nick feels the key to the success is how fast it is to implement the site, personalise it and gradually grow by adding further products and templates. Having struggled for a very long time to achieve something similar the benefits of a well thought out solution are very clear. Everything is accessed though a back-end control panel where you really do have full control over your printshop website.

When we asked Nick about how it was going, the first thing he said was how delighted he was to get his first real order. “It was placed on May 7th less than a week after launch, by a completely new customer we have never dealt with before and best of all they ordered at 7:59PM when normally we’d be closed!”

He also said “We don’t expect to compete in terms of exposure with the big players but we sure can beat them on service and quality to retain our local market and beyond”

Nick has also started to benefit from joining the B2CPrint ‘club’ setup by QPP “We have already exchanged ideas on new products and discussed pooling

templates to swap between members. Peter at QPP also sent me some card new products and discussed pooling templates to swap between members. Peter at QPP also sent me some card holders that can be included for the customer to give that professional touch”

Nick is now looking at the best way to market his online shop, including a Facebook page, discount coupons, leaflets and as many links from other websites as possible.

John Clark at Almabyte said he was delighted to see Nick up and running so quickly and within the timeframe agreed. In addition he added “It is good to see not just Nick but momentum really building now with QPP and hopefully our promotional offer to the readers makes this affordable for most. It is a fact that web2print has grown in the US and mainland Europe but is still lagging behind in the UK. As has been seen with other businesses the demand from the user is there and without the offering you could be left behind or worse still. Proving investment is essential”

Steve Smith says “One thing that often gets overlooked in the ‘race to get online’, is the cost of transacting such business: Debit and credit card processing charges, PCI compliancy fees, can often add hundreds, if not thousands of pounds of unnecessary costs to transacting such business. As an independent consultant with many years experience in the card payments processing industry I work with companies to ensure that they are getting the right service at the right price, as I have done with Nick Brown.”for further information, quote ‘QPP offer’: B2cPrint/almabyte, www.almabyte.co.uk; John clark on 020 7924 1087 or [email protected]. card compliance services: www.cardcomplianceservices.com; steve smith on 07887 835532 or [email protected]

The photographer for a national magazine was assigned to get photos of a great forest fire. Smoke at the scene was too thick to get any good shots, so he frantically called his home office to hire a plane. “It will be waiting for you at the airport!” he was assured by his editor. As soon as he got to the small, rural airport, sure enough, a plane was warming up near the runway. He jumped in with his equipment and yelled, “Let’s go! Let’s go!” The pilot swung the plane into the wind and soon they were in the air. “Fly over the north side of the fire,” said the photographer, “and make three or four low level passes.” “Why?” asked the pilot. “Because I’m going to take pictures! I’m a photographer, and photographers take pictures!” said the photographer with great exasperation. After a long pause the pilot said, “You mean you’re not the instructor?”

David Beckham goes shopping, and sees something interesting in the kitchen department of a large department store. ‘What’s that?’ he asks. ‘A Thermos flask,’ replies the assistant. ‘What does it do?’ asks Becks. The assistant tells him it keeps hot things hot and cold things cold. Really impressed, Beckham buys one and takes it along to his next training session. ‘Here, boys, look at this,’ Beckham says proudly. ‘It’s a Thermos flask.’ The lads are impressed. ‘What does it do?’ they ask. ‘It keeps hot things hot and cold things cold,’ says David. ‘And what have you got in it?’ asks Roy Keane. ‘Two cups of coffee and a choc ice,’ replies David.

very clean joke:‘What to do With hotel soaP’

The following letters are taken from an actual incident between a London hotel and one of its guest. The hotel ended up submitting the letters to the London Sunday Times. Dear Maid,

Please do not leave any more of those little bars of soap in my bathroom since I have brought my own bath-sized Dial.

Please remove the six unopened little bars from the shelf under the medicine chest and another three in the shower soap dish.

They are in my way. Thank you, Mr. S. Berman - - - - - - -Dear Room 635, I am not your regular maid. She will be

back tomorrow, Thursday, from her day off. I took the 3 hotel soaps out of the shower soap dish as you requested.

The 6 bars on your shelf I took out of your way and put on top of your Kleenex dispenser in case you should change your mind.

This leaves only the 3 bars I left today which my instructions from the management are to leave 3 soaps daily. I hope this is satisfactory.

Kathy, Relief Maid ---- Dear Maid – I hope you are my regular

maid. Apparently Kathy did not tell you

about my note to her concerning the little bars of soap. When I got back to my room this evening, I found you had added 3 little Camays to the shelf under my medicine cabinet. I am going to be here in the hotel for two weeks and have brought my own bath-size Dial, so I won’t need those 6 little Camays, which are on the shelf. They are in my way when shaving, brushing teeth, etc.

Please remove them. S. Berman - - - - - - -Dear Mr. Berman, The assistant manager, Mr. Kensedder,

informed me this morning that you called him last evening and said you were unhappy with your maid service. I have assigned a new girl to your room. I hope you will accept my apologies for any past inconvenience. If you have any future complaints, please contact me so I can give it my personal attention.

Call extension 1108 between 8AM and 5PM.

Thank you. Elaine Carmen, Housekeeper - - - - - - - Dear Miss Carmen, It is impossible to contact you by

phone since I leave the hotel for business at 7:45 AM and don’t get back before 5:30 or 6PM. That’s the reason I called Mr. Kensedder last night.

You were already off duty. I only asked Mr. Kensedder if he could

do anything about those little bars soap. The new maid you assigned me must

have thought I was a new check-in today, since she left another 3 bars of hotel soap in my medicine cabinet, along with her regular delivery of 3 bars on the bathroom shelf. In just 5 days here I have accumulated 24 little bars of soap.

Why are you doing this to me? S. Berman ------ Dear Mr. Berman, Your maid, Kathy, has been instructed

to stop delivering soap to your room and remove the extra soaps. If I can be of further assistance, please call extension 1108 between 8 AM and 5PM.

Thank you, Elaine Carmen, Housekeeper - - - - - - - Dear Mr. Kensedder, My bath-size Dial is missing. Every bar

of soap was taken from my **@??ing room, including my own bath-size Dial. I came in late last night and had to call the bellhop to bring me 4 little Cashmere Bouquets.

S. Berman - - - - - - -Dear Mr. Berman, I have informed our housekeeper,

Elaine Carmen, of your soap problem. I cannot understand why there was no soap in your room since our maids are instructed to leave 3 bars of soap each time they service a room.

The situation will be rectified immediately.

Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience.

Martin L. Kensedder Assistant Manager - - - - - - - Dear Mrs. Carmen, Who the hell left 54 little bars of

Camay in my room? I came in last night and found 54 little

bars of soap. I don’t want 54 little bars of Camay. I want my one damn bar of bath-size Dial.

Do you realise I have 54 bars of soap in here? All I want is my bath-size Dial.

Please give me back my bath-size Dial. S. Berman - - - - - - -Dear Mr. Berman, You complained of too much soap

in your room, so I had them removed. Then you complained to Mr. Kensedder that all your soap was missing, so I personally returned them.

The 24 Camays which had been taken and the 3 Camays you are supposed to receive daily. I don’t know anything about the 4 Cashmere Bouquets. Obviously your maid, Kathy, did not know I had returned your soaps, so she also brought 24 Camays plus the 3 daily Camays. I don’t know where you got the idea this hotel issues bath-size Dial. I was able to locate some bath-size Ivory which I left in your room.

Elaine Carmen Housekeeper - - - - - - -Dear Mrs. Carmen, Just a short note to bring you up-to-

date on my latest soap inventory. As of today I possess: On the shelf

under the medicine cabinet: 18 Camay in 4 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 2.

On the Kleenex dispenser: 11 Camay in 2 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 3.

On the bedroom dresser: 1 stack of 3 Cashmere Bouquet, 1 stack of 4 hotel-size Ivory, and 8 Camay in 2 stacks of 4.

Inside the medicine cabinet: 14 Camay in 3 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 2.

In the shower soap dish: 6 Camay, very moist.

On the northeast corner of the tub: 1 Cashmere Bouquet, slightly used.

On the northwest corner of the tub: 6 Camays in 2 stacks of 3.

Please ask Kathy when she services my room to make sure the stacks are neatly piled and dusted. Also, please advise her that stacks of more than 4 have a tendency to tip.

May I suggest that my bedroom windowsill is not in use and will make an excellent spot for future soap deliveries.

One more item, I have purchased another bar of bath-size Dial which I am keeping in the hotel vault in order to avoid further misunderstandings.

S. Berman

Wishful Thinking…A man was walking on the beach one day and he found a bottle half buried in the sand. He decided to open it. Inside was a genie. The genie said,” I will grant you three wishes and three wishes only.” The man thought about his first wish and decided, “I think I want one million dollars transferred to a Swiss bank account. POOF! Next he wished for a Ferrari red in colour. POOF! There was the car sitting in front of him. He asked for his final wish, “ I wish I was irresistible to women.” POOF! He turned into a box of chocolates.

naughTy buT niceThe mother-in-law stopped unexpectedly by the recently married couple’s house. She rang the doorbell and stepped into the house. She saw her daughter-in-law standing naked by the door.

‘What are you doing?’ she asked. ‘I’m waiting for my husband

to come home from work,’ the daughter-in-law answered.

‘But you’re naked!’ the mother-in-law exclaimed.

‘This is my love dress’ the daughter-in-law explained.

‘Love dress? But you’re naked!’ ‘My husband loves me to wear this

dress! It makes him happy and it makes me happy. I would appreciate it if you would leave because he will be home from work any minute.’

The mother-in-law was tired of all this romantic talk and left. On the way home she thought about the love dress. When she got home she got undressed, showered, put on her best perfume and waited by the front door.

Finally her husband came home. He walked in and saw her standing naked by the door.

‘What are you doing?’ he asked. ‘This is my love dress’ she replied. ‘Needs ironing.’ he said.

takes a snap at his hand.

The man says ‘I thought you said your dog did not bite!

‘I did’ replies the old man, ‘but this isn’t my dog!’
