“[The Gospel of Life] is therefore meant to be a precise and vigorous reaffirmation of the value of human life and its inviolability, and at the same time a pressing appeal addressed to each and every person, in the name of God: respect,

protect, love and serve life, every human life! Only in this direction will you find justice, development, true freedom, peace and happiness!” (The Gospel of Life 5)

I’m sure we have all encountered a bully during our lives, a person who tries to use the threat of force or intimidation to get us to do something we don’t want to do or act in a way contrary to our desires. Most times bullies are all bluster and wind without real substance or power. They only achieve success if the person they are trying to bully gives in and submits to their demands. If you stand up to the bully and assert your own integrity and moral courage, if you say no to his or her demands, the bully will inevitably back down and slink away in defeat not to be heard from again. Satan in today’s gospel, and the Satan that has prowled our world since the beginning of human history, has a striking resemblance to the bully each of us has at one time faced in the school yards and playgrounds of our world. Unfortunately, however, standing up to Satan, the evil one, is sometimes not as easy as confronting the school yard bully, for Satan, with all his disguises and sneaky tricks, is an ever-present opponent, one who will not so easily be defeated, and one who will usually not slink away after backing down from a confrontation. For the Satan of this world goes into battle for our souls, with unlimited weaponry with which to pierce our own defenses, and with a steeled determination to win us over to his side, the side of evil, hatred and pride. Satan, the devil, the serpent, the evil one, or whatever name he has chosen to go by since he intruded himself into human affairs at the creation of man and woman, has been and remains a formidable adversary, one whose timeless presence has wrought havoc on an oftentimes unsuspecting world. When he tempted Christ in the desert, he used three different sales lines on Jesus alone and you can be sure he has a million more just waiting to be used. He is a cunning creature who has acquired diabolical skills, skills fine-tuned through constant use against each and every human being ever dwelling on the face of the earth. Not even Jesus Christ, the Son of God was spared his efforts and evil skills. But he was defeated by a human being who had been praying for forty days and a human being who was accompanied into the desert by the Holy Spirit of God. A Spirit who provided him spiritual courage and fortitude, a spirit who spoke to his conscience and guided him toward what was moral and right. We too can defeat Satan if we, like Jesus, rely on prayer and the Holy Spirit. God bless.

Things to Do During Lent Invite a friend to Church.

Church researchers report that seventy to ninety percent of new church members start coming because of a friend, relative, or acquaintance. Have you ever invited someone to attend church with you and then became discouraged when you were turned down? Another study showed that persons

who became active Christians had been invited an average of eight times before they finally joined a church. The season of Lent is an excellent time to invite your non-going church friends and family to attend services with you.
