CHARUSAT Project on Surface Computing and Gesture Recognition won Best

Innovation prize at VCCI Expo

With help of Training & Placement cell, CHARUSAT Training and Placement officer Prof.

Ashwin Makwana sent 14 different entries from CHARUSAT for innovative projects

from different departments of Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Applied Science.

Out of that 4 Projects from CHARUSAT nominated and selected for final demonstration

and exhibition at VCCI-2013 innovation Dom.

CHARUSAT COMET – Vol.: I, Issue:2 Page 8

Out of 72 entries under i-Innovate category of Vibrant VCCI 2013, CHARUSAT was

among the top 15 teams who were selected on the basis of their innovation work to

exhibit at VCCI during 14-18th Feb. Out of those 15 teams CHARUSAT won the First prize

for the “BEST INNOVATION” under i-Create. CHARUSAT topic was “Surface Computing

and Gesture Recognition”.

A surface computer is a computer which doesn’t need a mouse or keyboard to operate

it. Instead the user uses its touch ability to access the daily works on his/her computer.

CHARUSAT project consists of a projector which CHARUSAT had used for projecting the

screen of a connected laptop onto any of the surfaces.

CHARUSAT have programmed its system in such a way that the system has ability of

converting any surface into a multi-touch touch screen and can be easily setup by any

person at his home by himself. All the multi-touch features like Pinch to Zoom, Rotate,

and Hold which is used on normal touch screen phones are easily recognized. At the

same time it is also not necessary to touch the surface; it can be operated from a farther

distance. This can be very helpful in institutions as well as schools where projectors are

readily available and will also help in boosting up the interactive e-learning among the

students at a very cheap price. This can also be used during conferences and meetings in

industries.

It is also not necessary to use a projector.

Even the normal desktop or laptop screens

can also be converted into touch screens by

using our setup.

The whole cost of CHARUSAT project sums

up under Rs.1300 only. CHARUSAT project

consisted of cubic area where a user has to

wave his hand and our program precisely

shows the exact position of user’s hand in

3D virtual cube. This can be very helpful in Gesture based applications i.e. performing

specific kind of tasks by showing a gesture. It can have lots of other kind of applications.

CHARUSAT team consists of four members Aman Verma, Komal Bansal, Jevin Balar and

Ami Dabhi.

products, and lower costs. The building blocks of virtual instrumentation include

powerfully productive software, modular measurement hardware, and commercial

technologies such as the personal

computer and the internet. Engineers

now can quickly and cost-effectively

create a system equipped with

analysis software and a single

measurement device that has the

capabilities of a multitude of

instruments.

The main aim of this workshop was to discuss various engineering applications using

virtual instrumentation and cater to the needs of students, faculty members and

practicing engineers. It also aimed to create awareness among participants about virtual

instrumentation and simulation, to provide an insight to solve real time problems and to
