PLEASANT VALLEY

SPARTANS

It is the goal of the Pleasant Valley School

District to have the finest academic and

extracurricular programs in the state. Not in

some things, but in everything. Not for

some students, but for every student.

Achieving the level of excellence set forth in

the words above is a journey of many

steps. It is accomplished across time and

through the hard work and dedication of many. The Spartan

Stadium Renovation Project presents a great opportunity for

the Pleasant Valley community to take a significant stride

toward accomplishing our excellence goal.

Spartan Stadium Renovation Project Description

The Spartan Stadium Renovation Project encompasses

significant improvements to facilities at both the high school

and junior high spanning over a two-year period. These infra-

structure improvements will positively impact our band, cross

country, football, physical education, soccer and track pro-

grams. In addition, the district's north end residents will enjoy

the addition of a great public use facility at the junior high.

Renovation Schedule - Phase I ( Summer 2010)

what you would see at Kinnick Stadium.

• A new, all-weather six lane track installed at the junior high

and available for public use in the same manner as the high

school track.

fit the profile of the wider playing surface for soccer.

Project Costs

The combined costs of Phase I and Phase

II will be $2.2 - $2.4 million. The range in

these figures is attributable to decisions

related to the surface type used on the

new high school track and decisions

related to seating capacity. The breadth

of this project is possible because of the

private commitment to raise $1.5 million in pledges payable

over five years. A large portion of this fundraising goal was

made possible by a generous $500,000 pledge by Eric and

Missy Dippel and family in honor of Eric's parents, the late

Dr. William and Yvonne Dippel.

Phase I work on the field is all privately

funded and will cost $850,000. The Phase

I work to build the junior high track is

funded by the district and will cost

$325,000. Phase II at the high school will

cost between $1.2 - $1.4 million and will

initially be funded by the district. The

district is advancing funds against cam-

paign pledges that must be paid back to the district over

five years as the private fundraising pledges are paid in full.

It is crucial that the district investment is mitigated so that

this project does not have a negative impact on the ability of

the district to stay ahead of other infrastructure demands

for this money. It is also important to note that all district

funds for this project are from the statewide penny sales tax

for school infrastructure. It is not legally permissible to use

this funding source for general fund obligations, like staff-

ing, supplies, or other such purposes negatively impacted by

state budget cuts.

The benefits to this project

are many and far-reaching.

• The addition of an all-

weather track at the junior

high enhances the physical

education and track/cross

country developmental programs.

• The addition of high and long jump pits. The long jump

pit is a new benefit to the junior high program as it previ-

ously did not exist. The high jump was previously located

on the tennis courts closing them for their intended use.

• New fencing around the track allows district residents

anytime access to the track for personal exercise.

• The new track also helps the high school track/cross

country programs. Near term it helps get through the

period of when the high school track is restructured. Long

term it provides an alternative workout site when the high

school track is otherwise scheduled.

• Soccer teams now play on a

far superior surface in a

stadium environment.

• Games now more conven-

iently scheduled and cancel-

lations eliminated due to wet

field conditions.

• Football program enjoys the same benefit relative to not

having to play on a surface that has been torn up by games

in wet weather.

• The all-weather surface allows the band to practice daily,

reduces cleaning and damage to uniforms, and increases

practice time due to closer proximity of the game field to

the band room versus their existing practice area.

Please Join us!

All who care about and benefit from

the Spartan Stadium Renovation Pro-

ject are invited to join forces to help

raise support for this notable facility for

our students. Project funds must be

generated from private support and we

are one-third of the way there!

The private fundraising effort is the foundation to the

breadth of this project. Without private funds, the artificial

playing surface and the junior high track – both key

elements to the district’s excellence goal – would not be

possible.

Please consider a tax-deductible gift to

the Pleasant Valley Sports Foundation

Fund. You can make a one-time gift or a

multi-year pledge payable over a five

year period. Gifts via credit cards are

also accepted. A gift receipt will be pro-

vided for tax purposes.

If you have further questions related to the Spartan

Stadium Renovation project, please call or e-mail Jim

Spelhaug at 332-5550 ([email protected]) or

Eric Dippel at 332-1515 ([email protected]). If you

would like to speak to someone about making a gift, please

contact Kellie Esters at 529-1634 ([email protected]).

Please remember that all gifts or pledges, regardless of

amount, are welcome and

greatly appreciated. Thank

you for your consideration

to help fund this exciting

project for students at

Pleasant Valley!
