Ah, mangoes!

The King of Fruits. Yes, the alphonso indeed is the King of Fruits. Grow-ing up, one remembers how we waited for mango season and how we cherished every bite, lick and spoonful of the fruit. Over the years, improved techniques have meant that we get mangoes almost all year round. But that hasn’t reduced the allure of enjoying mangoes in the summer… not to me, anyway! So enjoy this issue where we tell you a whole lot about mangoes… some things you knew, others you proba-bly didn’t.

As always, we want to know more from you. So feel free to drop us a line.

Generally, the onset of summer is a sure signal that mango season is nigh. With the changing trends of seasons, though (global warming, maybe?), we’ve seen some unseasonal rains in April. And some fairly persistent questions too like, “What happened to my Pune?”

What happened, is this: we became careless. We became greedy. We took, and we took, and we took and now, there’s nothing to do but suf-fer. The missing hills and the all-too-visible signs of ‘urbanisation’ mean that we’ve created a metropolis. An unfortunate truth. So if this is what we wan’t, let’s not cry about it. Because we created it.

And why am I ranting about it? Because it causes seasons to change. And that affects mangoes. Very badly. Think about it… hopefully while you enjoy a mango!

Aditya Kuber

”The missing hills and the all-too-visible signs of ‘urban-isation’ mean that we’ve cre-ated a metropolis. An unfor-tunate truth. So if this is what we wan’t, let’s not cry about it. Because we created it.!”

Aam ki baat!…and the season of mangoes is here! Do you remember the best mango dish you’ve ever tasted? We asked some Punekars about it and here’s what they had to say.

Kaustubh VaidyaSenior Business Analyst

There are two dishes, actu-ally! The first one has to be aamras poori because it reminds me of my childhood days, especially the summer holidays in May when my grandmother used to make it. The other one is my grand-father’s speciality - mango ice cream! It was a pot ice-cream which he used to make at home. The reason for liking it was simple – all of us together made it at home. And, when you do something with your family and enjoy it, the result is bound to be awesome.

Rani WilfredFounder, www.womenwonderful.com

I have to say that I love aam-ras a lot with piping hot poories. And, the aamras has to be garnished with carda-mom powder! This particular dish always reminds me of my mother. She used to add sliced bananas into it, you know the small ones that we call elaichi kelas. That made it all the more delicious. That, has got to be the best mango dish I’ve ever had.

We would love to know your views on the topic.

One whiff of that mango fragrance always teleports me to the year 1988-89. That was when I was at granny’s; she lived in a small Gujarati village. It was around this time that I was first introduced to the Kesar mango. This singular moment happened out on the veranda where I spotted it swimming gleefully with its companions inside a huge aluminium tub of water. That was the way mangoes were cooled in those days after which, the ladies of the house would slice them for eating. No recipe can match the lingering taste sliced mangoes bring to the table. Mangoes make for great bonding moments with family and friends while impart-ing flavour, taste and a singular magnificence to one’s day. This is but a single pick of mine from a tub containing several mango memories. I’ll cherish them forever.

Jyotsna TawadeHousewife

There are two recipes which are my favourite and they are made from Devgad mangoes. One is kairichi aamti (raw mango dal) and the other one is kairiche god lonche (sweet pickle made from raw mango). The reason these two are my favourite is because they remind me of my hometown which is Malvan. I used to enjoy these dishes so much when I was a kid. Those were the days!

Are you a Brunchbum? In the very first issue of this magazine, I wrote about how awesome Pune’s nightlife really is. But, did you know how much fun this city can be when it comes to partying during the day? Well, loads.

 Apeksha Bhagchandani

Yeah yeah, I know this section is all about “night” life but who said gathering and grooving can only be a noc-turnal activity? And anyway, it’s always nighttime somewhere, no? So people, while this scorching summer is upon is, let’s talk Sunday brunches and pool parties! Pick one of these and let some steam off on a Sunday. Eat till you drop and drink wisely, folks!

Sunday Brunch @ Café MezzunaGround Floor, City Point, Dhole Patil Road

Frazzled, hungover, bored, either or all of them? Head to this super-relaxing, lazy Sunday brunch. The variety of food and beverages (alcoholic or otherwise) will get you addicted to visiting this place on a regular basis. From fresh pastas and pizzas to salads and excellent deserts among other exqui-site dishes, you won’t be able to stop gorging at this Medi-terranean food mecca. The décor is tasteful and charming, just perfect for unwinding with friends and family, while the prices are pretty easy on the pockets.

Sunday brunch @ 11 East Street Café11, East Street, Camp

The venue, the food, the beverages and the ambience, all add up to a recipe that Sunday brunches are made of. Choose from a variety of pizzas, yummy pancakes, sliders, heavenly desserts and much more and wash it all down with delicious mocktails or cocktails (or good old water if you prefer). Water coolers and some shade will help you beat the heat and the quaint ambiance will let your mind wander to the streets of London. Overall, a big thumbs up!

Sunday O Pool Party @ The O HotelThe O Hotel, North Main Road, Koregaon Park

A swimming pool, loungers, music, dancing and beverages; What. Can. Beat. This? No no, please tell me. What can? Just wake up on a Sunday morning and head to the O Hotel roof-top, better known as Addah. One of its kind in the city, this signature event gives new meaning to the term ‘brunch’. Chill out on a lounger, splash around in the pool or dance to the funky tunes, all while you enjoy a breathtaking view of the city!

If you want to go the eco-friendly way, it would be a good choice to start with Papertells by Hand-made Paper Institute, a governmental organisa-tion located in Shivajinagar. Inaugurated in 1940,

the institute also lays claim to having printed the wed-ding invitation for Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi, providing the papers to write the Indian Constitution and even its master copy. M.S Publishers & Printers, a company run by Chitra Mete and Jeetendra Sonar took on Papertells from the government on a lease basis.

Mete says, “The industry unit could not cope with the changing situations and technology and the downfall began in the late 90s. In 2009, the unit was handed over to a private owner. In 2011, the revival of the old ideals became the need of the hour. Waste utilisation, glory of handmade paper, nature conservation, production eliminating pollution – all these aspects stood up as the agenda of globalisation. Now, the responsibility of ren-ovation, revival, and restoration with modernisation of handmade paper industry is shouldered by us, in the name of Papertells.”

Talking about their products, she explains, “Our prod-uct line specialises in water colour drawing paper, her-barium sheets used by botanical surveys, watermark

papers used for degree or diploma certificates. Others include blotting paper and filter paper, art paper used for painting by artists, paper bags, letter pads and dia-ries, files and folders, lamp-shades, jewellery and choc-olate boxes. Visit their factory outlet at Shivajinagar to check them out. Their material can also be bought from various retailers in Pune. “Our customers include for-eigners who take our paper back to their homelands.” Mete adds.

Despite the traditional methods used, Mete proudly admits to being well aware of global demands. “Wearing the crown of Gandhian principals we are walking on the path of practical requirements, modernization and sus-tainability. The most important part of our showroom is that it is entirely made of paper pulp. And our pulp is wood free. It is made by using cotton rags and paper waste.”

Mete states, “Papertells presents an excellent example of the execution of three “R”s – Recycle, Reuse and most importantly, Reduce. Papertells is a magnificent art hub for the artists and by the artists to display everything that can be put on paper or moulded from paper. We also host workshops, exhibitions, and social events showcas-ing the works of artists from diverse backgrounds.”

Paper PatterPapertells, a Handmade Paper Institute, promotes eco-friendly paper products that are, indeed, the future of paper.

Aam hi kaafi hai!Come summer and it becomes impossible to resist the king of fruits. This story is dedicated to the crazy mango lovers of Pune…

 Vedvrat Shikarpur

Kesar

A close cousin of the hapus,

kesar is grown in Gujarat. It has

a unique sweet taste and golden

colour, and is smaller than the

Alphonso. It is also referred to as

the Queen of Mangoes, the best

quality found in Junagadh.

We really hate summer, don’t we? We are either sweating or experiencing sunburns due to the extreme hot weather. However, there is only one thing that makes us welcome this season and forget all our summer problems; mangoes! Aam, mango or our dear amba; whatever you call it, the taste and the fragrance of

the fruit are a gastronomic delight!

Pairi

Another famous and a rather juicier variety from Devgad, Pairi is mostly used to make aamras (aikunach tondala pani sutla). On your next mango shopping trip, pick the ones that are beginning to turn yellow. That’s when they emanate a tangy aroma.

Totapuri

The variety is light green and shaped like the beak of a parrot (hence the name) at both ends and has a tangy flavour. It is mostly used to make pickles and is best consumed with salt and red chili masala (like you would enjoy a kairi).

Alphonso or hapusIf mango is the king of fruits, this variety is the king of mangoes. The Alphonso is the most pop-ular and the costliest variety, native to Ratnagiri (though it was first brought to India by Portuguese nobleman Afonso de Albuquerque). Hapus grows in the Konkan belt, mainly Devgad, Sindhudurg and of course, Ratnagiri. It is known for its aroma and juicy flesh.

Sleeping till noon, breakfast during lunch and lunch during dinner! Ask a 9-to-6 working professional and that’s the life they’d kill for. While I’m trying not to sound preachy at all, dear students, savour these topsy-turvy moments before the real world knocks at your doorstep and bounds you for life. And trust me, it’s not going to be pretty.

Now, if you’re blessed with super cool parents who couldn’t care less as to how you plan to spend your summer break, I have got some awesome ideas that require you to do squat. Unless, of course, you haven’t sworn to stick to your bed and daydream all day, in which case, I can’t help you. Sorry.

LOL sites you could spend days browsing through

www.9gag.com, anyone? The mother of all LOL websites, this monster is the reason we procrastinate in life. But hey, what do you have to worry about?

www.tasteofawesome.com is a pool of world’s best memes. Like they simply put, boring photos + epic captions = Taste of Awesome. If you really have too much time to waste, this is your site!

www.fmylife.com, if not entertain you, will surely make you feel better about your life. A compilation of people’s worst WTF moments is just a click away. Go, go. Grab a bowl of popcorn and watch as the world screws up.

Smartphone games, in case you weren’t already addicted to your phone.“Candy Crush Saga”! What? You’re yet to download it? Do it right away and get addicted. Disclaimer: Don’t blame me if you start having candy-crushing dreams. Yes, it’s that addictive. And, yes, I warned you.

“Cut the Rope 2” is another candy game, only this time, you have to pass the candy between ropes. It’s said to be one of the defining mobile games of the past few years. So, download away and start playing!

Vacationing… like a boss!In our previous issue, we helped you take up a hobby. In this issue, we tell you to sit back and relax. After all, isn’t that the whole point of a summer vacation?

 Veethi Telang

PUNE UNLTD.18

Page 19: Pune Unltd. - 3

“Quizup” is an IQ-enhancing game, in case, you know, you really want your summer vacation to count for something. Super popular among friends who challenge each other in a game of questions ranging across categories. So, brush your general knowledge and start challenging the top-rankers of your class!

Bookworm? Here go three fun recommendations for you.“Sh*t My Dad Says” by Justin Halpern is a compila-tion of ridiculously funny quotes from his father, truly depicting the coming-of-age relationship between fathers and sons. Read up on, you might find a truck-load of similarities here!

“Dear Life, You Suck” by Scott Blagden narrates the angst of every young adult – troublesome teenage! Do you think your life really sucks? Wait until you read about Cricket Cherpin, the protagonist’s life. But of course, there’s a silver lining.

“Eleanor & Park” by Rainbow Rowell is a bittersweet tale of two misfits that fall in love over comic books and music. If you’re scouting for light-hearted romance, this young adult novel could be your tear-jerking dose of first-time love.

“Tafree” joints in the cityAnd … when you’re done with the couch and want to just storm out of the house, it’s time for a stroll around the city! Pune is full of “tafree” joints that don’t charge a bomb and yet ensure a fun eve with your buddies. The best example of such joints is the famous Vaishali lane by the Times house of F.C. Road. Along a trail of bikes are numerous groups of college goers that are seen chatting and having fun. Buy a cup of coffee from Vaishali and you could spend hours standing by your bike as you have a gala time with your friends.

Another cool joint is Café Shubham located in Shivaji Nagar. An open café, it’s a no-nonsense joint that’s filled with students. Take your pals along and make sure you try their famous cold coffee. And, when you’re hungry, their egg maggi is a must-try! Go, pay a visit and you’ll be hooked!

Bavdhan’s Café Coffee Day is my final pick for this section, the biggest reason being the fact that it’s open 24x7! Leave home after dinner, call up a bunch of friends, order a cup of coffee each and make it last till the wee hours. We all know we can. Who said you can’t have fun without burning a hole in your pockets?

Scorching heat is upon us and fashion wise, that’s not such a bad thing! Summery dresses, minimal accesso-ries and pretty pastel hues more than make up for the discomfort during this season. Speaking of dresses, sure, prints and bright colours always make us happy but, nothing can beat the charm of a little white sun-dress. Whether you wear one during the day or a dressy number for a night out, you simply cannot go wrong

with either choice.

White in TimeWe’ve always believed that a Little White Dress has way more charm than an LBD, don’t you think? No matter what season is upon us, classic white never gets old! Apeksha Bhagchandani and Veethi Telang, Pune-based fashion bloggers at Sequinsanity, feature little white dresses along with summery hues donned for a sunny day out!

If you prefer, add some lightweight layering to your summer clothing. Scarves, shrugs, shirts and sleeveless jackets are fun options.

Accessorise your white dresses with minimal pieces and pretty colours during the day. If you want to wear one for an evening out, go for gold or silver metallics.

What the bloggers wore

We opted for day dresses, light layers and some eye-catching, summery colours. We even decided to keep out makeup to a minimum. After all, who needs a rainbow on one’s face after just one hour in the sun, right?

Veethi picked a light, cotton dress and layered it with a good old checkered shirt. The pointy neon pumps gave her outfit an oomph factor, the way only heels can, no? And, the pink canvas tote added the perfect amount of fun to the ensemble. Chic wayfarers completed her look..

Apeksha picked a viscose/cotton ruffle dress and layered it with a lightweight grey shrug. The purple canvas tote and strappy mint platforms lent a summery feel to the entire look.

Children get animated and act in their own filmThis summer vacation, gift your little one a chance to get animated and act in their own film. Con-fused? Read up on!

 Prachi Bari

Shaunak Joshi can’t stop beaming enough. “I am acting in a film,” she says, “I will show you, it is a cartoon film where I am the star,” he stresses.

He is one of the children who have been introduced to the newest form of edutainment that a resident of Aundh has introduced and has taken the children’s form of entertainment to a new high.

An innovative DVD created by Ujjwal Joshi and his brother Amit, this is an online venture called “Curly Orange”. It is through this website that they offer a unique concept of customised edutainment  (educa-tion+entertainment) for children up to 10 years of age.

The concept of the DVD is very simple. “We get the photo and personal details of the child as input on the website, then we customise the animation stories to make the child star of the stories. Through these stories, we teach kids good habits, etiquette and health awareness. In these stories, the child plays the main character along with many interesting cartoon characters.”

Ujjwal, an IT professional got this idea from his story-tell-ing evenings with his children. Now-a-days, children don’t want to hear about heroic tales but want to be a part of their own. So, I would often make up stories with them as the heroes of the story. It would be an adventure for them where they used their logic and common sense. Thus, it became a regular feature in my house and soon, friends of my children started asking me for stories. I also real-ised that not everyone has a knack for story telling hence this idea came into my mind”, he says.

Page 27: Pune Unltd. - 3

He also noticed that animation catches kids’ attention very fast. They have great fun watching it. But, they generally don’t remember the moral of the story. Why? Because, it is somebody else’s story. Unless, they find themselves as a part of the story, they are really not so attentive. The moment you make them a part of the story, see how curious they become. In this case, they are more likely to remember the moral of the story.

“I have created unique animated stories focusing on improving the habits typically observed in kids aged 2-10 years.  Each of these beautifully animated stories teach good habits and values to the child. It was amaz-ing to see the kind of attention that children give to the stories when they sees themselves as the main charac-ter of the story,” he added.

Ujjwal also states that this  unique concept has been introduced in India for the first time and he is pleased when many parents call up to create more stories. Pankaj Jain, an advocate and father to a lovely daugh-ter is amazed by the values this form of edutainment enfolds. “My daughter really loved the animations and

she felt as if she is a part of the entire treasure hunt. The rules of the hunt were really inspiring and, she realised that she should brush her teeth not only in the morning but also at night. Even though she was feeling sleepy, she told me that she wants to brush her teeth before going to bed on the same day when she saw your CD,” he said.

Rima Ghosh, another happy parent states, “Each topic, whether it is on ‘Good Etiquette and Manners’ or ‘Health and Hygiene’, is seminal to the basics of a square devel-opment of my daughter’s personality. It is a pleasure watching animated characters behaving juxtaposed with my daughter, aged 12 years. It conjures nutriment for reflective thinking in my daughter to practice good etiquette and hygiene”.

TRAVEL

Page 30: Pune Unltd. - 3

Artist Hanna Rion aptly stated, “The greatest gift of the garden is the restoration of the five senses”. We Punekars take pride in our exem-plary gardens, especially the ones that show-

case the true spirit of our heritage.

The first notable name amongst the oldest gardens in Pune is Saras Baug, built by the Peshwas in the late 1700s. Originally just a temple dedicated to Lord Gane-sha within a lake, it was turned into a garden once the water dried up. The temple is still called Talyatala Gana-pati (Ganapati from the lakes). The initially small garden was later made into a bigger landscaped garden in the dried lake depression by the corporation.

JJ Garden at Dastur Meher Road is now more famous for the Vada Pav (which is, inarguably, the best in the city). It was built around 1844 by Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy as he always wanted to contribute to the development of the city. Amongst the oldest gardens in the city, JJ Garden is the smallest in area.

Bund Garden or Mahatma Gandhi Udyan as it is pres-ently known, is another gift from the famed Jeejeebhoy family. Earlier, a small dam to make water available to the masses, it is now a place to jog or take a stroll. Bund

Garden’s origins may date back to 1868 but it’s still one of the most well-maintained parks in the city.

Empress Garden, a botanical garden or park, dates back to 1838. It’s a treat to nature lovers, thanks to the abun-dance of greenery. What’s more, this well-maintained garden is an excellent picnic spot too! The Enpress Gar-den is located near the race course with a beautiful jog-ging track and a garden for children and senior citizens to have a calm, peaceful time.

Ask any Punekar kid and their favourite park would undoubtedly be Kamla Nehru Park! After all, parkat jayachaya (“want to go to the park” in Marathi) is one of their most frequent excuses to get out of home. This compact park in Erandwane is kid-friendly, with swings, see-saws and the works. Extremely well-planned with lawns, lighting, sitting area, walking paths and green spots, the Kamla Nehru Park dates back to 1950-51 and even has as Marut HF-24 fighter plane on display. Dating around the same time is the Sambhaji Park on Jungli Maharaj Road. Maintained by the corporation, it has some eye-pleasing lawns and greenery, apart from an aquarium, a designated snacks area, clay fort and train models and a battle tank among others, on display to add to the attraction.

The Oldest “Bench”markers of PuneOur city’s parks and gardens are as much part of the Puneri heritage as our buildings or culture. So, this time, let’s take a stroll through Pune’s oldest parks that are dotting the city landscape.

HERITAGE WATCH

DOS 9 Drink water even if you’re not thirsty.

That’s right! Drink water before your meal, after you pee, and of course, before you begin your workout. This will ensure you’re hydrated all the time and will have higher energy levels through-out your workout.

9 Opt for outdoor workouts such as walk-ing, cycling or trekking, especially during morning hours when the weather is comparatively cooler. This way, you’re not only cool throughout your work-out but you will also shed those extra pounds without sweating much. That’s a win-win, right? But, make sure you’re wearing sunglasses to prevent your eyes against harsh UV rays.

Dos and Don’ts for Your Summer WorkoutWhile fitness fanatics may revel in drowning in the pool of their own sweat, for others, it’s plain nau-seating. So, here’s your fitness cheat sheet to staying cool while working out this hot season.

 Veethi Telang

9 Coconut water is your go-to fluid for summers! Not only does it suppress cravings, it also boosts hydration and aids in weight loss as it’s exceptionally low in calories. So, sip a glass full of coconut water 30 minutes before your workout to stay cool and perform better in the heat!

9 Cut yourself some slack! As the heat builds up, you may not be able to perform as well as you used to. Summer heat places extra stress in your body, increasing your perspiration rate. So, go easy on yourself and let your body get used to the increased temperature.

DON’TS 8 Do you consume proteins before your workout? Don’t. Too much protein before a

summer sweat session can mess with your basal temperature and make you feel hotter than usual. So, save that protein shake for later!

8 Don’t go overboard with your workout on the very first day. Allow your body to get used to the heat and gradually increase the pace. Ideally, give yourself a week before you start pushing your limits.

8 Nothing boosts your confidence like wearing a black tank that makes your waist look thinner! But, did you know, dark, clingy clothes trap the heat against your body and may cause you to fatigue faster than normal? So, opt for loose, light-coloured, roomy (not baggy) clothes for your workout, especially in case of an outdoor session.

8 While energy drinks may boost your energy levels and help you stay awake all day, over-consumption of the same can cause you to miss sleep altogether. And, adequate sleep, my friend, is the first step to a fit body. So, time to swap those energy supplements for fruits and juices!
