Challenges of the Project

• Very large, complex site

Urban setting

Near residents

Over water

Winter conditions

Environmental considerations

• Numerous partners and stakeholders : importance of

providing information well ahead of time to ensure proper

collaboration and coordination

• Construction of Champlain Bridge : 42 months

(now 37 months remaining) 6

• Maximize pre-fabrication of concrete components, with the option of cast-in-

place when more practical :

Footings : West Jetty

Piers and deck : Drummondville

• Pre-assembly of steel pier caps and superstructure : three jetties

• Delivery, installation and assembly by barge and catamaran

• Day (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) : 75 decibels or 5 decibels above

ambient noise level

• Evening and night (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) : 5 decibels above

ambient noise level

Follow-up required

Page 44: Public Information Meeting L’Île-des-Soeurs - New Champlain Bridge Corridor Project - November 5, 2015

New Champlain Bridge Corridor Project

• Main mitigation measures for the entire work site:

Use variable-intensity back-up alarms

Organize traffic to minimize backing up

Control production of impact noise (truck tailgates)

Make site supervisors and workers aware of the need to comply with noise

mitigation measures

• Monitor noise levels during construction

At the beginning of critical activities, for verification purposes

Once or twice every two weeks

Check when there are complaints

Air Quality Management

• No expected impact on sensitive zones

• Main mitigation measures for the entire work site:

Transport of materials in dump trucks with tarp covers

Appropriate maximum speed for vehicles, to reduce dust emissions on access roads

or jetty

Spraying water on surfaces

Regular cleaning of the streets used by vehicles and machinery in order to remove

any accumulation of movable material and other debris

If necessary, application of dust suppressant

• Monitoring to be done mainly for demolition activities
