Philosophy Quick Gude: Aristotles Practical Works

This study guide is to direct students to books that will help in understanding Aristotles philosophy as a

whole and those particular areas in his thought that have had the greatest impact on the development of

    Western philosophy.

    INTRODUCTORY STUDIES

The following books are all excellent introductions to Aristotles total conception of philosophy. Ross and

Taylor both provide very clear accounts of Aristotle using the divisions of his works as a perspective.

Guthrie, Irwin, and Lear explicate Aristotle through an analysis of his major concepts. Kerferds concise

article is a good place to begin your investigation. Barnes, Schofield, and Sorabji four volume collection of

    articles divides them according to subject area: science (volume 1); ethics and politics (volume 2);

metaphysics (volume 3); and psychology and aesthetics (volume 4).

    ETHICS

Both Broadie and Hardie present a clear overview of Aristotles moral theory. Kennys two books and

Coopers are also excellent introductions. Both Sherman and Kraut give outstanding explications of

Aristotles theory of virtue in relation to human volition and the desire for happiness. More advanced

discussions of Aristotles ethics are in either Engberg-Pederson or Meyer.

    RHETORIC AND POETICS

Arnharts and Grimaldis commentaries offer the best introductions to theRhetoric. Wisse presents an

interesting historical study. Much has been written on the Poetics. Spariosus analysis is within the context

of Greek culture. Both Jones and Cooper provide excellent introductions. Belfiore and Davis are more

    contemporary interpretations.

    ELECTRONIC TEXTS

The Revised Oxford Translation of The Complete Works of Aristotle(1984 Barnes edition) is available in full text

on the public personal computer in the reference section of Hoose. (The paper edition is in Philosophy, Doheny,

and Leavey, call number B407.S6 1984.) Because the text has been computerized, it is now very easy to locate a

term or concept in any or all of Aristotles works.

Other editions of Aristotles works are available on the Internet at various sites, including:

    http://english-www.hss.cmu.edu/philosophy/

    http://classics.mit.edu/Browse/browse-Aristotle.html

(Internet addresses may change or be eliminated entirely depending upon the needs of the host organization.)

    SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER STUDY

Use USCs online catalog HOMER to find more books by doing an Easy Search combining Aristotle with one or

two words of the topic of interest. Use theExpanded Academic Index in the Periodicals Databases to find recent

articles about Aristotle. There are many articles about Aristotle in this index; so, as with books, combine Aristotle

with one or two words of the topic of interest. TheArt Index and PsycINFOin the Periodicals Databases also list

articles dealing with Aristotle in art and psychology. Current Contentsis also a useful source. It contains article

citations from several philosophy journals and is usually the most up to date.

For additional research, consult The Philosophers Index, in paper or CD-ROM formats, in the reference section

of the Hoose Library. In its paper format, search under Aristotle in the Subject Index, note the author of thearticle, then turn to the Author Index with Abstracts for the complete citation and summary. In its CD-ROM

format, use the Easy Menu Search. Type and mark Aristotle in the Named Persons option. Then, using Modify

the Current Search with Additional Criteria, type and mark a term in the Word/Phrase option that expresses your

interest. All the records in the database that are on Aristotle and match the Word/Phrase option can be displayed

    with complete citations and abstracts.
