When I was a student of Gerontology at Baylor University we talked a lot about how senior adults can age optimally.

At Providence Park I believe optimal aging is our mission, to help each senior adult live and age optimally. This simply means providing an environment where each person can realize his or her full potential socially, spiritually, physically, and mentally.

Optimal AgingDepending on the person, there may be limitations that come with age such as slightly reduced vision or the need to maintain a slower pace. However, it is always better to focus on what can be done and what can be enjoyed rather than what cannot.

For myself and all of our wonderful staff, this is our goal – to ensure each resident has the opportunity to enjoy the greatest life possible.

January 2012

I am excited about 2012 because I believe the best days for all of us are ahead of us. I look forward to the journey together

Tom came to Waco in 1954 after graduating from college in Stillwater, OK. He accepted a position with Phillips located in McGregor, who had a government contract requiring work on large planes. In 1963 he was drafted for two years of service in the U.S. Army, from which he returned to Phillips (known at that time as Astrodine) to continue his work.

In 1972 the Texas Hospital Association, headquartered in Austin, contacted him to run their office in Waco, and he said, ”I can do that”, which he did until retirement in 1996.

Tom likes to do woodworking and as a younger man, he played a lot of golf. His wife died in 2006. He has one son who lives in Waco. Welcome to the Providence Park family, Tom.

Hats Come to the Park

New Friends at Providence ParkWelcome! Tom Brush Apt. 1105 If you come to the Village

and St. Elizabeth Place on Friday January 6th, you might get a surprise. The gentlemen of The Village and St. Elizabeth Place will be having a contest to see who can win some “Cold Hard Cash”. It is “National Men’s Hat Day” and the ladies will be the judges at the Happy Hour that afternoon. There will be awards for the funniest, largest, smallest, ugliest etc. We also have some hat trivia for those who attend the Happy Hour that day with prizes. So, guys, pull out those hats and come on down and show them off and maybe win some money to boot……It’ll be lots of fun….

Experience National Pie Day in Texas

This stay-at-home mom lived sixty years in north-central Louisiana, without a nearby major airport, and so she decided to relocate to Central Texas which would solve her problem.

Carlotta loves to work puzzles and looks forward to participating in activities at the Village.

She has two daughters who live in the Seattle, Washington area; another daughter in Austin; son, Jerry, who loves in Waco and teaches at Baylor in the Political Science department, and a Western Louisiana son, from whence she came.

WELCOME! Carlotta, to the Village.

Welcome! Carlotta Waltman Apt. 1302

In honor of “National Pie Day” the nutritional services department will be serving pie at the International Coffee event on the 23rd of January at 2:00 p.m. on the St. Elizabeth Balcony.

We are starting a new year and a new 12 month travel segment to different states in the United States to see what they have to offer in the way of fun and entertainment for those who travel. If you have a particular state that you would like to see, let Sharon know and she will try to get it for you. This first month it might be interesting to see just what our own fine state has to offer. So, we will be going to Texas.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a federal holiday observed on the third Monday of each January.

Dr. King was a nonviolent man. He was a young Baptist preacher and an extremely gifted speaker. He used that gift to rally thousands of people to boycott businesses and show their strength, to march peacefully for the right to vote, to be allowed to live and work where they chose, and to be treated fairly and with dignity. Leading this movement for change came with great personal danger to Dr. King.

While traveling to Memphis to support striking black sanitation workers, a bomb threat delayed his flight. He knew his life was in danger but he responded by urging the city’s black people to unite peacefully in support.

In his last speech he said, “Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And he’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know

tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land!”

He was assassinated on April 4, 1968, soon after that speech.

Dr. King rose to leadership exactly a hundred years after the Civil War ended. His work brought an official end to racial discrimination.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. After his death he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.

Christmas Parties Enjoyed by AllThe St. Elizabeth Place and Village Christmas Parties were a sight to see. There was food galore prepared by Chefs Rob and Dona and their staff. The music was fantastic as always, the drinks were flowing and the chance to meet and talk to friends and family members a fun experience. Here are a few pictures of these great events:

The Vasser family, along with many others enjoyed holiday festivities at Providence Park.

Musicians brought Christmas spirit to Providence Park.

The Garibay family enjoyed time together during the Annual Christmas Party.

Many thanks go out to Chef Rob and his staff for making the Christmas Parties very special again this year.
