Objectives:1. Differentiate physical from chemical properties;2. Observe materials and give their properties; and3. Recognize their strengths and weaknesses.

EVERYTHING THAT SURROUNDS US IS
MATTER.
![Page 3: Propeties of Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070321/558e5d921a28ab15548b470b/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
WHAT IS MATTER?
![Page 4: Propeties of Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070321/558e5d921a28ab15548b470b/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Matter-anything that occupies space and has mass-it is made up of particles such as molecules and atoms-it is generally classified into three basic phases/states: solid, liquid and gas, with plasma sometimes added as the fourth state for scientific purposes.
![Page 5: Propeties of Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070321/558e5d921a28ab15548b470b/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Strengths Weaknesses

Properties of Matter1. Physical Properties- this can be observed or measured without changing the substance into another substance.2. Chemical Properties-properties that can only be identified when one substance reacts with another substance.
![Page 7: Propeties of Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070321/558e5d921a28ab15548b470b/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Physical Propertiesa. Intensive Properties- properties that depend on the kind of matter regardless of the amount
- whether the amount is smaller or bigger, these properties do not changeEx. density, boiling point, melting point, color, texture, solubility, metallic properties like malleability and ductility, hardness
![Page 8: Propeties of Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070321/558e5d921a28ab15548b470b/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Density- the ability of an object to float or sink in water due to its mass and volume
![Page 9: Propeties of Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070321/558e5d921a28ab15548b470b/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Boiling, Melting and Freezing Point of an object is fixed.
![Page 10: Propeties of Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070321/558e5d921a28ab15548b470b/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Ductility- the ability of metals to be turned into wires.
![Page 11: Propeties of Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070321/558e5d921a28ab15548b470b/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Malleability- the ability of metals to be hammered into thin sheets.
![Page 12: Propeties of Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070321/558e5d921a28ab15548b470b/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Brittleness- the ability of matter to be broken easily.
![Page 13: Propeties of Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070321/558e5d921a28ab15548b470b/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Physical Propertiesa. Extensive Properties- properties that depend on the amount of the matter
- it means that if the amount of matte is small, its quantity is small too.Ex. mass, volume, length, height, area
![Page 14: Propeties of Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070321/558e5d921a28ab15548b470b/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
![Page 15: Propeties of Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070321/558e5d921a28ab15548b470b/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Chemical PropertiesExamples:a. combustion/flammability- the ability to burnb. corrosion- the gradual destruction of metals like
rusting of ironc. oxidation- combination of substance with oxygen
such as the browning of fruits when exposed to the air.
