Smith Street Motorway and Olsen Avenue Interchange upgrade Project completion July 2015

Construction on the Smith Street Motorway and Olsen Avenue Interchange upgrade is now complete.

The Smith Street Motorway and Olsen Avenue Interchange Upgrade was part of a $119 million package of road upgrades to improve traffic flow and road capacity, increase road safety and provide better connectivity to the growing Health and Knowledge Precinct in Southport.

Key features The key features of the upgrade include:

a free-flowing loop from Olsen Avenue onto the Smith Street Motorway westbound, allowing southbound motorists to travel westbound towards the motorway without stopping at traffic lights

a third eastbound lane on the Smith Street Motorway between the Pacific Motorway (M1) and the Olsen Avenue off-ramp, improving motorist safety and reducing congestion

six lanes on Olsen Avenue between the interchange and Crestwood Drive, providing more capacity and reducing congestion

a new signalised intersection between Parklands Drive and Kumbari Avenue

six lanes on the Smith Street Motorway between the interchange and Kumbari Avenue, improving traffic flow

shared footpaths, signalised pedestrian crossings and on-road cycling provisions throughout the interchange, increasing safety for pedestrians and cyclists

widening and lengthening of the eastbound off-ramp to Olsen Avenue from three to five lanes, providing additional capacity and reducing congestion

resurfacing works in both directions on the Smith Street Motorway and Olsen Avenue, to provide a smoother and more durable road surface.
