What are entry ramp meters? Entry ramp meters are quick-change traffic lights located on motorway entry ramps to manage the flow of vehicles entering the motorway. Vehicles keep entering the motorway, but in a steady and controlled manner. A sign at the beginning of the entry ramp would tell you if the ramp meters are operating. When operating, one vehicle per lane will be able to enter the motorway, once a green light appears. How do they help congestion? Ramp meters would operate during the morning and evening peak periods or when there is heavy traffic on the motorway. Traffic sensors along the motorway would detect changes in traffic conditions and allow the system to switch the ramp meters on before the motorway reaches capacity. When switched on, ramp meters regulate the total traffic flow entering the motorway, easing congestion and controlling the flow of vehicles trying to merge at the same time. How do they improve safety? By controlling the flow of traffic from the entry ramps, the merging of traffic entering the motorway is smoother and safer. This results in travel time savings, less stop-start traffic and less sudden braking, meaning less wear and tear on vehicles and a reduction in the risk of crashes. M4 Smart MotorwayEntry ramp meteringA key feature of the M4 Smart Motorway is the installation of entry ramp meters, or ramp signals, to control the flow of vehicles entering the motorway.

What are entry ramp meters?Entry ramp meters are quick-change traffic lights located on motorway entry ramps to manage the flow of vehicles entering the motorway.

How do they improve safety?By controlling the flow of traffic from the entry ramps, the merging of traffic entering the motorway is smoother and safer. This results in travel time savings, less stop-start traffic and less sudden braking, meaning less wear and tear on vehicles and a reduction in the risk of crashes.
