Treatment at Plume Core Expanded and Improved Installation and construction of new monitoring wells, injection wells and an extraction well in the Western In-situ Reactive Zone (IRZ) will help to improve and expedite remediation operations in this area. Earlier this year, PG&E conducted community outreach and performed biological surveys in consultation with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to assess the area prior to construction activities. The construction includes extending the in-situ treatment pipeline to the west of Fairview Road in the IRZ areas. PG&E is using in-situ treatment to achieve cleanup in areas of the plume that have the highest levels of chromium 6. The in-situ process starts by injecting a food grade material (such as ethanol) into affected groundwater to stimulate the growth of naturally occurring bacteria within the soil. The growth cycle of the bacteria creates conditions that convert chromium 6 to chromium 3, a naturally occurring substance. To date, in-situ treatment has reduced chromium concentrations across 124 acres of the plume core from over 1,000 parts per billion (ppb) to less than 10 ppb in many areas. This is the twenty-ninth in a series of regular Progress Reports. December 2017 PG&E Partners with Hinkley Youth and Mojave Desert Land Trust to Beautify Desert Lands with Native Plants Last month, local youth participating in the PG&E sponsored Career Institute workforce development program completed the planting of over 1,100 native plants on PG&E owned property. These efforts encourage native plants such as Four-wing Saltbush, Creosote Bush, White Bursage and the Desert Saltbush to flourish which beautifies area properties and stabilizes soils, minimizing erosion and dust. PG&E partnered with the Mojave Desert Land Trust, a nonprofit nursery which helps to conserve more than 70,000 acres of prime desert habitat, National Parks and wilderness, to grow these native plants at their nursery in Joshua Tree. Unique opportunities like these help provide participating youth valuable on the job training and experience for native seed collection, planting, irrigation and habitat protection. Since its launch in 2012, more than 45 local youth have participated in the workforce development program. PG&E Supports Hinkley Family Health and Resource Fair More than 30 residents attended the sixth annual Hinkley Family Health and Resource Fair held on November 4, 2017 at the Hinkley Community Center. PG&E organized the event in coordination with ten different supporting organizations including San Bernardino County Public Health, San Bernardino County Transitional Assistance, San Bernardino County WIC, San Bernardino County Health Education, Borrego Community Health Foundation, Desert Sanctuary, Inland Empire Health Plan, San Bernardino Sheriff, Lutheran Social Services Community Care Centers and Holistic Resources by Penny Harper. Participants received free flu shots, helpful information regarding healthy living, help with enrollment in area programs and participated in fun family activities. Hinkley Community Center volunteers hosted the event along with Margaret DeAngelus, IRP Manager Community Liaison, who provided fruit smoothies and bags of fresh fruit to all attendees, care of the Inland Empire Health Plan. “We are very thankful to all of the Hinkley Community Center volunteers who help support events like this year round,” said Jessica Bails, Senior Technical Project Manager for PG&E, “and to all of the local organizations who make the Hinkley Health Fair a success every year to help and provide valuable information to our community.” Local families were pleased to learn about valuable bilingual health information and medical services provided by Borrego Health Services.
