Real World University,Driven to Meet Real World Needs.

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to KDU.

Discover a university that combines knowledge and experiential learning that goes beyond the classroom. Our education approach takes on a real-world perspective, where our students are encouraged to embark on real-world projects that not only focus on hands-on learning, but also on developing their leadership and interpersonal skills, ensuring they hit the ground running and become graduates who think, do and innovate.

Here at KDU, we have nurtured many bright minds who have contributed to society, by providing a platform where practical, impactful ideas are conceived and incubated. Our global connections open the minds of our graduates and broaden the perspectives of our future generations.

A pioneer in providing private tertiary education in Malaysia, KDU has seen thousands of spirited and hopeful youths from various cultures and countries throughout the world, teeming the corridors of its vibrant campuses in pursuit of quality education, for the past 30 years. As the first institution to have a purpose-built campus, and the first to offer twinning programmes in the nation, KDU is proud to have had 45,000 strong alumni since its inception, some of whom include corporate leaders, entrepreneurs and celebrities around the globe.

KDU has two campuses in Selangor – KDU University College in Utropolis Glenmarie and KDU College in Damansara Jaya, and is part of Paramount Education.

CULTIVATING AN ENTREPRENEURIALMINDSETRichard Branson, Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk are entrepreneurs who are highly enthusiastic, creative problem solvers, risks takers who learn from failures and thrive on challenges. At KDU, we foster these eminent traits by encouraging our students to think outside the box, be innovative in developing their business sense and to cultivate entrepreneurial ideas into impactful action.

Making Monster ImpactIn an effort to spur and accelerate the students’ entrepreneurial mindset, the School of Computing and Creative Media has established a development, publishing & commercialisation initiative called Daikaiju Studios, an avenue where staff and/or students form development teams to take on variety of projects. One of the many success stories was in 2015 – when a group of KDU Game Development students entered a competition to develop a mobile game based on an upcoming animated TV series called Ejen Ali. The students won RM100,000 as a development start-up capital and are currently incubated within the studio.Another one of the initiatives of the studio is to produce original content. As of today, there are two registered digital game IPs currently in development, and slated to be launched in 2017.

Turning Designers into DesignpreneursThe growing phenomenon of entrepreneurial designers has given birth to designpreneurs. Designers are normally associated with artistes and visual-makers who tend to be wrapped within their own creative process and creation. However, designers have innate entrepreneurial sense which allow them to expand, experiment and broaden their designs within the commercial, marketing, industrial and trading enterprise. The Entrepreneurial Design students of the School of Communication and Creative Arts understand this concept the most. They are taught to sharpen creative and personalised designs, as well as to market these designs by integrating advanced creative works with business strategies. Through the annual Designpreneur Faire, final year students will showcase and commercialise brands and products they have produced during the period of their studies.

Fine Appreciation of Modern Malaysian CuisineAn entrepreneurial project of the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts, Dewakan Restaurant is currently Malaysia’s rising star in fine dining scene. Named after the word ‘Dewa’ for God in Malay and ‘Makan’ which means ‘to eat’, Dewakan is looking to change the way we understand Malaysian cuisine by presenting scrumptious and enticing plates that are sure to delight your taste buds. Dewakan believes that food is symbolic of love and the restaurant looks to celebrate the bountiful blessings given to our land through plethora of innovative courses. This successful entrepreneurial project exists through the vision and passion of KDU culinary lecturer, and author of Redefinition: Molecular Cuisine, Chef Darren Teoh.

From Class to CaféCome lunch hour, the alluring smells of mouth-watering desserts and pastries at KDU’s Café 8ighty 7even are brought to you by the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts’ bakery students. The café allows students to be involved in the process of preparing and baking the confectionary for the café, as well as managing the ins and outs of a business model. The students are tasked to prepare sandwiches, tarts and variety of breads, and they are able to witness the sales of their own product for the day. This not only allow them to work in the latest and well-equipped kitchens but also to participate in real café environment. You can also get some of the best brewed coffee to go with your delicious pastries!

WORKING WITH & WITHIN COMMUNITIESOne of the most vital traits of real-world education in parallel with real-world needs, is to work with and within communities. At KDU, we believe that the communities around us play an important role in shaping and influencing future leaders and professional businesses. We interact with variety of communities and imbue our students the skills required to work with these communities effectively.

Corporate Social ResponsibilitiesInitiatives that benefit society by corporate enterprises are important in ensuring that the business world remain connected to its own corporate conscience for better environment and better communities. One of the CSR projects initiated by KDU students include the Pre-United Club’s efforts of raising more than RM50,000 for the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC)’s Children Cancer Fund through its fundraising activities and initiatives. An on-going project since 2010, some of the initiatives from the club include raising funds through tickets sales for musical showcases, food carnivals, competitions such as bowling tournaments and more.

Bridging Academia with IndustryThe School of Business ensures students obtain real-life learning experiences by bridging academia with industry, through partnerships and collaborations.

• DigiCooperativeEducationProgramme An industry partnership through the adoption of the Introduction to Business module where students receive on-the-job structured learning experiences in relevant operational areas within the telecommunications industry.

• TheEdgeEducationFoundation–‘Money&Me’YouthFinancialEmpowermentProgramme Incorporating relevant aspects and the spirit of corporate social responsibility, our students volunteered to become facilitators to reach out and inculcate the concept of ‘financial literacy’ to school students.

• GrowingBankingSector:AICBcollaborationwithKDU The Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers (AICB) signed an academic partnership with KDU to groom and nurture the next generation of banking graduates. The demand for talented and skilled individuals in financial sector is rising and this partnership is an example of realising the needs within a rapidly changing environment in the banking industry.

Powering Up With Solar EnergyPutting what they learnt into practice, Tharmaraj A/L Vilosamy, Tan Kin Sun and Vinodkumaran, three students from School of Engineering undertook a feasibility study on alternative power sources for Kampung Sesapan Batu Minangkabau. The students proposed and designed a green energy system, which will allow the remote village to produce solar energy to generate electricity for the entire area. Through this hands-on project, the students not only improved their understanding of the utilisation of renewable energy and honed their technical knowledge, but also provided the village with a useable, cost-effective and sustainable solution.

ALUMNI

KokShwuJiunACCA-Classof2012 A few years after graduation, I found myself back on familiar grounds, which is my old campus, KDU College. However, instead of attending classes, I am currently delivering lectures for the CAT programme. Under a collaboration between KDU and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), students of the Bachelor of Accounting (Hons) programme will spend their final year covering the syllabus of five professional ACCA papers. I’ve been given the opportunity to work on the coordination of this degree programme, in particular the Year 3 subjects.

I believe most people will query why an accounting graduate is not engaged with an accounting firm, when their career takes them on a different track. For me, it is simple – being in the education line is what I always wished to do. Prior to joining the academia, I chose to work in an accounting firm to gain some experience as I think the industry exposure is beneficial for both my students and myself. Being an ex-ACCA student, I can really understand the needs of my students as we have very similar education background.

With my experience in KDU and PAC, coupled with the qualification I have gained, I find more doors of opportunity are opened up to me.

Courtney SiewACCA–Classof2013

I started my banking career back in 2011 when I was offered an opportunity to work with Malaysia’s largest bank - Maybank, as a management trainee in the corporate banking division. At that point of time, I was pursuing my degree from Oxford Brookes University, with 2 more ACCA professional papers to complete. ACCA allowed me the flexibility to pursue my career and continue with my remaining papers on a part-time basis.

It is never easy juggling between work and studies, especially in a demanding role as a corporate relationship manager. Nonetheless with proper time management, nothing is impossible when you set your mind to it. I worked hard and managed to pass all my ACCA papers with continued support from my KDU lecturers, bosses, work mentor, family members and friends.

Being an ACCA member opens up doors of opportunities as it gives future employers a sense of confidence that not only are they hiring a competent accounting and finance specialist but a person with strong determination and drive. KDU has equipped me with the knowledge and skills; a solid foundation and confidence to face the tough challenges in the corporate world. The unwavering support and guidance from the dedicated lecturers, management staff and fellow students makes KDU the perfect place to learn valuable life lessons while having fun at the same time!

16

EvonKhongYiKuanACCA–Classof2012

KDU has given me various opportunities to gain knowledge not only in my studies but also in many other aspects such as organising various activities with the PAC Club, being a student advisor in education fairs, and sharing my thoughts and experience with new students, which comes in handy in my working environment as auditors are often required to speak to clients from various levels in an organisation.

The dedicated team of lecturers in KDU often share their experience so that students can relate to theories in book and understand how the relevant skills and knowledge can be applied in the working world, which enabled me to often adapt quickly to new tasks, industries and environment.

When I was in KDU, I was also given the opportunity to brush up my public speaking skills, which helped to boost my confidence level in speaking to others and when conducting internal trainings for the firm.

What made me choose KDU over all other colleges that offer ACCA is the dedicated lecturers and classroom environment. The passionate lecturers in KDU inspired me to encourage people around me to walk my path and share my experience. They have taught me to not give up and have a strong will while facing obstacles ahead. Those obstacles are what makes us a better person. In the auditing field, we are often exposed to difficult jobs requirements, unreasonable time-line and long working hours, but because of the encouragement from my lecturers in KDU, I’m often self-motivated and am able to stand up after falling just like how they taught me not to give up after I failed my exam back then. There is just too much good memories and experience throughout my years of study in KDU.

ChanYeanPengACCA–Classof2011 I am currently an Associate Director in KPMG. Aside from my work, I am particularly involved in CSR initiatives. I participate in World Vision Sponsorship programme by sponsoring 4 children. This programme allowed me to join their Sponsor Visit where we travelled to Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, China to visit their Area Development Programs and the child you sponsored. I am also actively engaged in Kechara Soup Kitchen where we serve the homeless by providing food, medical, clothes as well as haircut service to the homeless every week. This also includes food bank programme where we provide monthly provisions to the urban poor.

Studying in KDU was the right choice as it has made my ACCA journey a much easier and enjoyable experience. This has also pushed my career to a higher level and thus enabled me to have the means and capacity to contribute back to the society. I am also able to provide better advice to the younger generation on the importance of education. I remembered visiting my sponsored child Thailand where he told me that he wanted to quit his studies due to poverty. I managed to influence him the importance of studies where he can improve not only his life but will also enable him to have the means to help others in need when he is able to grab better job opportunities due to education.

The most important thing I learnt from KDU is attitude and passion matters. Positive attitude and having passion in what you do makes a difference in passing your papers as well as in every aspects of your life. This was displayed in all the lecturers as well as staff in KDU which makes the whole encounter with them enjoyable and fruitful.
