Proclaim Jesus Christ, Live in Christ, Serve!

We exist so that the whole world will know the healing power of Christ’s love.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

OK, I’ll admit it, I am a sucker for cheesy 80s music. It’s notuncommon for me to be wandering the halls singing a tuneor two from any band or artist from Boy George to Air Supplyor something else. One line I love to say or sing at any occa-sion is from Whitney Houston’s, Greatest Love of All. “I be-lieve children are the future, teach them well and let themlead the way.” Admit it, you sang along just now.

That line has always made me pause for a moment and lookat all children as hope for a new era. Recently in Jamaica, I was working with children who seemed to haveno future. You see, their home was in a garbage dump. Thatdump was on fire. Yes that is correct, their home, a dump, was on fire. They were homeless. This broke my heart. Webuilt homes and a play house for them. We loved them andthey loved us. Now, not all the children lived in the dump, butmany lived in places of extreme poverty. In that place ofpoverty, there was hope. Jesus lived there with them and youcould see it.

Back in the States I reflected on all the children St. Andrew’stends to and cares for... in the Community Resource Center, the hundreds of children we have given homes to... in MartinSlovakia the hundreds of children that we work with to teachthe Gospel... the program called “Treehouse” on our campusthat we partner with for hurting teens... the many childrenand families in the Preschools of St. Andrew’s... our Sunday

School children and all the youth in gradeschool, middle school, and high school. Our staff works with hundreds of familiesand children in teaching the good newsof Jesus Christ.

All this reminds me that our children arenot the future of the church only. Theyare the now of the church. We are inministry with them and for them. To-gether praising and singing, healing andserving, we are church with them.

We remember the call in Matthew thatJesus said, “Let the children come to me.” As a church andas individuals let us welcome, invite, encourage, and engagechildren in our work to Proclaim Jesus Christ, Live in Christ, and Serve so that the whole world will know the healingpower of Christ’s love.

THE PRAYER CHAPELThe Prayer Chapel in the Sanctuary was dedicated on April 12, 2015.

The Prayer Chapel of St. Andrew’s is a designated place for prayer. The chapel is located in the Sanctuary buildingand will be open for meditation, Bible reading, and prayer anytime the building is open. All are welcome to enterthe chapel for prayer whenever a need should arise.

What is prayer? At one level, prayer is a conversation with God. But prayer can go deeper than ordinaryconversation because prayer does not necessarily require words. At its center, prayer is simply being present tothe presence of God.

“To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.” Martin Luther

Lift High the Cross Mission Appeal RecapThank you! To date we have received close to $2.4 million incontributions to the Lift High the Cross Mission Appeal. Wehave been able to accomplish so much with the gifts received.

As the campaign comes to a close, we are in the process ofmaking our final disbursements where the end result will be:

Community Resource Center $450,000 – This allows us to sus-tain the future of the CRC, which means hundreds of familieswill be helped in their search for housing stability.

TreeHouse Ministries $300,000 – This helped us kick off whatis now the fastest growing and largest Treehouse program todate. Treehouse is a ministry that serves at-risk youth in ourcommunity with love and grace.

Benevolence – given outside of our walls – over $200,000 –As a part of our mission we tithed whatever we received tohelp others outside of our own walls and community.

Building and Grounds Improvements $1.4 million – Thesemuch-needed building upgrades in the Great Hall, Youth &Sports Center and Sanctuary were necessary to enable us tocontinue the excellent ministry we are dedicated to.

We thank you for your generous spirit which allowed us to ac-complish so much. This definitely helps us Proclaim JesusChrist, Live in Christ and Serve, so that the whole world willknow the healing power of Christ's love!

Survey Says...Thank You!From Your Church Council and Pastoral Staff

Thanks to allwho partici-pated in theCongregationAssessmentTool (CAT) survey. More than 1,100 people took the time tocomplete the survey. You are helping to shape the future ofour church!

This survey is the beginning of a process by the ChurchCouncil and pastoral staff to create a fresh vision and planto lead us toward the future God intends for our church. Re-sults of the congregational survey will be central to ourwork. You'll be hearing more about survey results as wemove through the process, but you should know that re-sponses clearly indicate that St. Andrew’s is a healthy con-gregation interested in equipping our members for ministryand leadership, developing ministries that work towardhearing those broken by life circumstances, reaching newpeople and bringing them into the life of our congregation, and creating more opportunities for our members to formmeaningful relationships. In the months ahead, we willfocus on the opportunities and challenges you've identifiedas we position St. Andrew's to do even more to build God'skingdom here on Earth.

Stay tuned for exciting ways in which we will be moving for-ward together in ministry. Thanks again for participating inshaping the future of St. Andrew’s.

We are excited to announce thatwe will have LED video displaysinstalled in our Sanctuary inearly June, in time for VBS thisyear. Temporary screens havebeen used at St. Andrew’s forseveral years for VBS, Confirma-tion and other programs TheLED video displays are similar toa large flat TV screen, and aredark when not in use.

We believe these displays willwithout a doubt enhance our traditional worship. The pastoralteam and music department willwork closely together to make sure the displays enrich the wor-ship experience for all. They will also allow us to be betterstewards of our Sanctuary space. We often have speakers andpresenters who come to our beautiful space assuming they canplug in their computers to make their presentations. This willallow us to provide the latest technology in accommodatingthese requests.

Five years ago we started researching video projection, screentechnology, and vendors. We learned a lot in the process andare thoroughly pleased with our decision to go with Daktronics. It truly is the best technology for our space, easiest to care for,and hands-down the best value.

We look forward to the ways in which the LED video displayswill augment our worship experience for all ages.

In case you were wondering… A few questions you may have:

Will we be changing our style of worship in the Sanctuary onSundays? No, the style of worship will not change. The video displays willtruly enhance what we are already doing and will not dictatethe way we worship together.

What kind of things will be shown on the displays? We are working on guidelines and processes for what might bedisplayed. Depending on the content of a worship service, wemay show a photo, map, or any of a variety of things that support worship.

Will we still have bulletins? Yes, complete with printed music.

Will the shades need to be pulled to darken the room in order toview the displays? No. State-of-the-art technology allows viewing in virtually alllighting conditions. Consider outdoor LED displays at sports sta-diums – similar or identical technology is used.

Where will the displays be mounted? The LED displays will be mounted on the brick walls locatedalong the outside of the organ pipes.

When will we start using them? They will be installed mid-June and ready to go for VBS, June22, so that thankfully we will no longer need to rent screens forthis amazing week.

LED Video Displays to Enhance Traditional Worship

Above is a depiction of how the new LED video displays will appear placed on the brick walls on both sides of the organ facade.

Birds, Bugs, and ButterfliesHow beautiful and wondrous is God's creation! Our (St. An-drew's) campus reflects these wonders and miracles through-out. To discover what The Lord has given us, the St. Andrew’sEnvironmental Stewardship Team (EST) will sponsor a series ofnature hikes on our campus. Professional Naturalist JimMalkowski will lead these hikes to find and identify the birds, the trees, shrubs and flowers, bugs and butterflies, and the nat-ural cycles of water, air, and sun's effects.

The first week in May is one of the best times for local and mi-grating birds, with as many as 25 species seen on or from ourproperty. The first hike will be Saturday, May 9, 9 a.m. Meet infront of The Great Hall rain or shine, and bring your binocularsand any field guide to birds you may have. Children must be ac-companied or 12 and older.

A program for families will be given on Saturday, May 16, at 10a.m. as part of Caring for Creation Weekend. This family pro-gram will be 60 to 90 minutes long and will feature some"touch and feel" experiences with a few live animals, as well asitems like antlers, wasp nests, insects and mammal mummies, followed by a short "discovery walk." Suggested for kids 4years old and up. Meet in front of The Great Hall at 10 a.m. Another series of nature hikes will be offered in October.

Do You Love to Garden? We are looking for some green thumbs to help care for ourcommunity garden, and other gardening upkeep on our beauti-ful campus. The garden helps provide fresh fruits and vegeta-bles for guests of the Community Resource Center andThursday Night Meals. Those who volunteer also can share inenjoying the fruits (and vegetables) of their labors. For more in-formation or to get involved please contact Cynthia at 651-426-0319 or [email protected].

Do You Like to Bicycle? The St. Andrew’s Holy Rollers is starting up for 2015 for peopleof all ages and abilities. The group rides Saturdays at 9 a.m.and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. from the Great Hall lot. The first ridewill be Saturday, May 9. For more information call Dennis Lin-deke at 651-426-9415.

Imagine what it would be like to ask for help. At the April 19tour of the St. Andrew’s Community Resource Center (CRC),congregation and community members pondered this questionand heard from a recent Resource Center guest about her expe-rience of needing to ask for help. Faced with many hardships, reaching out was extremely difficult but necessary to secureshelter, food and other basic needs for her family. Our guestshared that what truly shaped her experience of asking for helpwas the response of the people who assisted her at various or-ganizations. She shared how the compassionate response ofCRC team members helped her feel “human” for the first timein a long time.

Guests at the April 19 tour heard an update about the Commu-nity Resource Center and took a tour of the Hope for the Jour-

ney Home shelter in Oakdale. The Community Resource Centeris beginning its fifth year of serving local community membersin need. This past year, 87 families were provided with emer-gency shelter and 98 families were provided with rental assis-tance to help prevent homelessness. We are encouraged thatwe were able to help prevent homelessness for more familiesthan we actually sheltered.

Looking to the future, the Community Resource Center hasplans to make a greater impact on homelessness. Our new“Keys Program” provides case management and a small rentalsubsidy for up to one year after a family is out of shelter. In ad-dition, the St. Andrew’s Community Resource Center is workingto create new partnerships with local churches to provide newemergency shelter options throughout our community.

CRC Tour Highlights Compassion and the Future

We are excited after hosting an event to address suburbanhomelessness; What C.A.N. We Do About Homelessness in theSuburbs? (C.A.N. stands for Churches and Communities Activat-ing Our Networks). Attending the meeting were pastors andcommunity leaders alike. It was a discussion of how, throughcollaboration, we can do so much more. It was a time to thinkabout possibilities and all the different ways in which we, as acommunity, can come together to make a difference and dis-cuss what we C.A.N. do to help with the homeless crisis.

St. Andrew’s CRC continues to provide shelter for our neighborsin need, but we cannot do it all, and we cannot do it alone. TheCRC originally opened our doors to “fill gaps” in service in ourcommunity, and that is what we continue to do. By “fillinggaps,” we have sheltered 456 families in just four years. Ourservice area remains to be our surrounding eight to ten mile ra-

dius. The Ramsey County shelter waiting list grew to over 60families at one point this past summer. The county is doing allthat they can do, and we are doing all that we can do, butclearly we need more resources and more people willing to helpand do what they C.A.N. It is time to come together and encour-age more to be a part of the solution.

We have a successful model of what a congregation can do,and we would like to share our experiences and be a supportsystem for other churches and organizations that are interestedin doing the same thing. We know first-hand how important ithas been to the growth of the CRC to have other churchesworking in collaboration as partners. We are energized by theenthusiasm in the community! Great strides are being made.Together, we are making a huge difference, and we are excitedabout the endless possibilities.

“In Kingston, at Hope ValleyExperimental School, wefixed a roof, built a play-house, replaced screens, painted rooms, doors, cub-bies, floors, running tracks, walls and even Anthony’sback…oops! Over in TheWaterhouse District we held a clinic, seeing up to 200 people aday and fixed up the small shack where we served breakfastwith Madge to kids on their way to school. Then we went toCalalloo Mews to do VBS and play with kids, enhance thekitchen at the school and yes, we also built a house, for Tamikaand her six children. God is so great! Here are a few commentsfrom participants…

“I really liked being there and helping the people, but thepoverty made me feel like they needed advocates that wouldhelp them have a better life.”

Barb Gumatz

“My daughter and I were able to take our first mission trip to-gether this last January. Our time together serving the people atWesthaven Orphange was amazing! It pushed both of us out ofour comfort zone and stretched us a bit. It was nice to have the

balance of serving and reflecting on our time there each nightas we gathered as a group for devotions. We grew closer toeach other as well as with the group we were with.”

Cindy Kunkel

“Charmaine at Copse remem-bered me from last year and wegreeted with great hugs. Thereading glasses that we broughtwere well received and com-ments like ‘I can read my pre-scriptions now,’ were veryheart-warming. The clients at the mobile clinics are so patientand grateful for any little thing – makes you wish you couldbring more for them. They have so little and we have too much!A very enjoyable experience at church on Sunday – a lovely eld-erly woman was totally uninhibited with dancing during themusic at the service.”

Creating Community to help those in needby Brad Brunfelt, who joined Pastor Mike Carlson and team as a first-time MJ-er in March of this year

An interesting and holy process happened this week.A resurrection of souls and an awaking of the HolySpirit.

This week, 26 people, the majority of whom werestrangers, responded to need where it was seen. As agroup we saw poverty in ways that few in our countryget to. It was surreal and hard to think of the peopleand their children forced to endure in these condi-tions. The community that we became tried our bestto meet the needs we were asked to, and to find newjoy in our hearts doing so. Often we would ask hardquestions about why this happened, or how this couldbe, but in the end, we loved and we gave what wecould in so short a time to serve.

We accomplished quite a bit – a new home for a family of eight, a repaired roof for a school, a fresh coat of paint on so manythings. But there was more: We met with and befriended so many amazing people – saints of the modern day – who work day inand day out like we got to for our week there. We became community for a lively group of children, children often in great need ofattention. We walked with them and tried our best to understand them and their needs.

Many of us questioned ourselves in this process. We wondered if we gave enough, if we loved enough. We wondered if those whoare there gave us more than we gave them, because they gave us so much. In that process, we asked that of our fellowmissioners. Together we struggled with the hard questions that come from a place like Jamaica. Together we built a smallcommunity out of strangers. We worshiped, we sang, we worked, we played, we reflected, and we ate together.

A place like Jamaica asked a lot of us; it demanded us to come together and become more than our individual parts. I speak formany when I say that God worked through us, the hands and feet of God, to become a team rooted in the Mission that is Jamaica.

We exist so that the whole world will know the healing power of Christ’s love.

Proclaim Jesus Christ, Live in Christ, Serve!

MMISSIONISSION JJAMAICAAMAICA

Special Guests at Worship May 16 and 17 Mr. Clive (Nazie) Anderson, Mission Jamaica's local foreman in Jamaica, will be at St. Andrew’s for the May 16 and 17

worship services to share his story with Mission Jamaica and Habitat for Humanity. He will serve with

St. Andrew’s Habitat team the first week of June.

Exciting news! For the second year in a row you will have achance to sponsor and build a Habitat for Humanity home inWhite Bear Lake! If you ever considered putting your faith intoaction by serving in this local mission, this is the year to do it.The house will be built at 1916 Eugene (near 96 and 61).

Due to road restrictions, the new construction schedule is theweeks as follows:

• June 1 – St. Andrew's• June 8 – Roof Raisers Church Coalition• June 15 – St. Andrew's• June 22 – St. Andrew's• June 29 – no work - 4th of July break• July 6 – St. Andrew's• July 13 – St. Andrew's• July 20 – St. Croix Valley Church Coalition• July 27 – St. Croix Valley Church Coalition

Registration for Volunteers/Site Hosts/Lunches is on-line atsaintandrews.org. (Click on Habitat link – if you have problemsregistering contact Dave Schrader 651-470-6303.) WomenBuild dates are July 6, 9, and 13.

Fund-raising: The Cemstone Run/Walk For Others took place onSaturday, April 18 to help raise funds for the house. We need toraise $30,000 to sponsor materials used while we build. Youcan designate a gift to the Habitat for Humanity fund any time. Ifyou donate directly to Twin Cities Habitat, please ask them toapply your gift to St. Andrew's (Mahtomedi) and inform DaveEngh so we will know if we have met our commitment.

Here is what your gift to Habitat will buy:$10 = Box of Nails $50 = Low Flow Toilet $75 = Window $100 = Kitchen Sink $150 = Front Door $1000 = Wallboard $2000 = Flooring

2015 will be the 24th year St. Andrew's has helped a family inneed to achieve home ownership. You may know that Habitatfor Humanity is not a charity program. Homeowners make theirdown payment with 300-500 hours of “sweat equity” and thenpay a zero interest mortgage for the actual cost of the house.Homeowners are carefully selected from applicants making be-tween 30 and 60% of the area median income: nearly ten qual-ified applicants apply for each of the 50-60 homes built each

year by volunteers and Habitat families here in the Twin Cities.

Our new homeowners will be Mimi Birhanu and her two chil-dren; Lidia (7 yrs) and Nathneal (5 yrs); they can’t wait to move! The children are excited to have their own rooms. Mimi movedfrom Ethiopia in the early 2000's and her goal has been to raiseher children in a safe environment. The family likes watchingfamily movies and going swimming. They also enjoy playing ed-ucational games. Mimi wants the volunteers to know she ap-preciates everyone who is volunteering. Owning a house meansa lot to her.
