What is a procedure?

• According to the Webster Dictionary, a procedure is a way of performing.

• Therefore, this handbook will better explain how I expect you to perform in our classroom.

Character Traits• Citizenship: the character of an individual viewed as a

member of society; behavior in terms of the duties, obligations, and functions of a citizen

• Respect: courteous regard to a right, privilege, privileged position, or someone or something considered to have certain rights or privileges; proper acceptance or courtesy; acknowledgment

• Responsibility: reliability or dependability• Fairness: honest; just; straightforward• Caring: to be concerned; have thought or regard• Trustworthiness: deserving of trust or confidence;

Behavior Procedures• Students will act and behave based on the guidelines set forth in the

student code of conduct and our classroom learning procedures.• All behavior problems will be dealt based on their severity.• Students who exhibit behaviors that disrupt the classroom will be

removed from their seat and placed somewhere else in the room or in another classroom.

• After returning to their seats, students who fail to alter their behavior will be given corrective actions, such as lose of privileges, campus clean-up, or classroom/office assistance. Also, your parents will be called.

• Students who continue to cause problems and fail to follow our learning procedures will result in a referral, a visit with our assistant principal, and a meeting with your parents.

• Possible results of the meeting are a behavior plan, lose of privileges for an extended amount of time, or classroom visits from your parents.

• Severe infractions will result in an automatic referral and a trip to the office.

Entering the Classroom

• You are to line up on the right side of the door in two lines (boys and girls), facing forward, with all your belongings by your side.

• Upon entering the classroom you greet your teacher at the door and proceed into the classroom in a quiet and orderly manner.

Breakfast Procedures• Grab one of every breakfast item.• Place any breakfast items that you do not

want on the sharing table.• Eat your breakfast in a timely manner.• Put all wrappers, containers, and excess food

in the black garbage bag.• Pour out any excess milk or juice down the

sink and run the water for a few seconds.• Wipe around the sink.• Clean-up your table using a Clorox wipe if needed.

Morning Procedures• Be on time• Be prepared with all supplies you may

need throughout the school day, i.e sharpen pencils.

• Greet your fellow group members• Sit down quietly• Take out homework folders/binders and

turn homework into the appropriate basket

• Begin morning work

Learning Procedures• Practice Active Listening and wait for

directions• Be responsible• Find the supplies you need• Share and do your Personal Best• Individual learning time is quiet• Teamwork requires 6 inch voices• If you have any questions, first ask three of

your classmates, then ask the teacher.

Active ListeningThis means to:1. Give your full attention to the teacher or any person

asking for Active Listening.2. Use eye contact with the person who is speaking to

you.3. No talking while someone else is talking.4. Concentrate on what is being said.5. Listen to all of the content of what someone has to say

before asking questions or providing your own statement/opinion.

What do I do when the teacher signals to get attention?

• Stop everything you are doing and hold up your hand giving five.

• Quietly let your neighbors know the teacher needs their attention.

• Follows the teacher’s cue to show you are ready.

• Be ready to listen for instructions.

What do I do when I have a question or need help?

• Quietly raise your hand or present your red cup if you are working in a group setting.

• Using the life skill of patience, wait for the teacher to call on you or come to your desk.

• Ask your question or tell the teacher what you need.

• Continue working....

What do I do when I need supplies?

• Unless instructed to do otherwise, ask the teacher before getting any needed supplies.

• At times, the group will be assigned a supplies manager, thus they are the only individual that gets up to get supplies.

• Use supplies appropriately and carefully.• Any misuse of supplies could result in

future restriction/prohibition.

• Work on unfinished assignments• Quietly take out a good book and read it• Write a letter to somebody• Create an illustration that summarizes a key concept that we’ve learned

this week• Practice your multiplication, division, or fraction facts using the flash

cards• Practice memorizing the fifty states and our presidents using the flash

cards• Work on one of the geography center activities• Create a bookmark that includes Author’s Purpose, Main Idea, Major and

Minor Characters, and Literature Genre from a story you’ve read this school year.

• Create a crossword puzzle making use of reading, math, science, or social studies vocabulary words.

• Review math concepts using the Math Manipulative Bucket.

Homework• You are required to fill out your agenda daily with

homework assignments.• Daily Read and Respond- 20 minutes• Additional math, reading, science, or social

studies assignment.• Mac-Ro• Multiplication/Division flashcards• Reading Fluency• Study Island, Xtra Math, Scootpad, Typing Web,

Typing Instructor, Literature Blog• Any work not finished during the school day

becomes homework.

Make Up Work• If you are absent from class, you will have a “We

Missed You” assignment sheet on your desk. It is your responsibility to finish work you have missed while you were out.

• You will be given the same amount of days to do your make up as you were absent.

• Be sure to take the initiative to hand in your work right away.

• If you need to finish class assignments at home you will be given a couple days to complete the assignment.

• If you work is extremely late, it will NOT be accepted, unless prior arraignments have been made!!!

What do I do when I need a drink of water?

You may drink water when it is individual learning time

Only one student at a time at the water fountain

Drink water or re-fill your water bottle in a timely fashion

If you happen to spill water around the sink, please use the Lifeskill of Initiative to clean it up

What do I do when I need to go to the restroom?

• You may go to the restroom during individual learning time.

• Check to see if the restroom pass is available.• You must sign-out using your agenda.• You have 5 minutes to go to the restroom, unless

otherwise authorized by your teacher.• Take the restroom pass with you and go to the

restroom making sure you leave all writing utensils at your desk.

• When you return, sign back in and continue working.• You may only go to the restroom once in the A.M.

and once in the P.M.

HygieneStudents are given 10 minutes after

recess to use the bathroom and refresh themselves.

Acceptable items:• Toothbrush and toothpaste• Floss• Deodorant or antiperspirant• Baby wipes

Transitions• This is the time spent going from one

place on campus to another.• Students will walk in a single-file line in

alphabetical order unless instructed by the teacher to do otherwise.

• Students will face forward and refrain from talking.

• You need to show your life skill of respect as other classrooms are learning.

The Lunch Room• Students will line up alphabetically in the class, wait for

the hand sanitizer dispenser student, and then, wait for the teacher’s cue to go.

• Before entering the cafeteria, students must answer a flashcard correctly.

• Students will grab a tray, milk, utensils, and any items from the salad bar and proceed to designated table.

• Students will sit alphabetically.• Once seated, you may not leave your seat unless you

ask permission.• When you are finished you will wait for teacher’s cue to

throw away trays and line up at the cafeteria door.• Students are responsible for picking up after

themselves.• If you need to go to the bathroom, raise your hand and

wait for the teacher to excuse you. • Students assigned as cafeteria clean-up will assist the

lunch ladies in wiping down our table.

Assemblies• Quietly walk into the cafeteria, library, or designated

area.• Locate our seating area and proceed in a quiet and

speedy manner.• Stay seated in alphabetical order.• Avoid side conversations and give the speaker your

undivided attention.• Remain seated and raise your hand if you need to use

the restroom or have a question related to the assembly.• Students who are unable to follow the procedures will be

placed next to the teacher or removed from the assembly.

Computer Lab• Before leaving the classroom, make sure you have passwords,

paperwork, and/or assignments.• Line up outside the computer lab door and wait for the teacher

cues to enter the room.• Move quickly to your assigned seat.• Take out all materials and begin to work.• If you need basic assistance, ask your neighbor. If the issue is

complex, raise your hand and I will help you as soon as I can.• There are no food or beverages in the computer lab.• We use 6-inch voices and refrain from excessive side

conversations.• Individuals who fail to maintain a positive learning environment will

be removed from the computer lab.• Before you leave, make sure the computer is logged into the

sunrmedia server.

I hear a fire alarm, what do I do?

• Stop everything you are doing.• Calmly get up from your seat and

walk to the front door.• Quickly form a line and quietly walk

out the door to the designated area.• When outside, remain quiet and wait

for the teacher to count students and give you further directions.

There is a school lockdown, what do I

do?• The teacher will close and lock the

door. • Move to designated area.• Remain quiet and continue your usual

routine.• If you are outside the classroom when

the alert is issued, please proceed to the nearest classroom.

What do I do when the dismissal bell rings?

• Remain seated and wait for the teacher/floor check to dismiss the quietest individuals first.

• Make sure your table and floor are clean.

• Proceed to line up in either a bus line or walker/parent pick up line.

• Wait for the teacher to dismiss you from class.

Substitute Teacher• If and when I am absent you will have a substitute

teacher.• You are expected to behave better than when I

am present. I will not accept any problems that may occur when there is a substitute in the classroom.

• You must treat the substitute with respect and show him/her how we always do our Personal Best and practice our Life Skills.

• Show the substitute how we work together everyday.

• Remember that what you do while the substitute is here reflects on our class and your teacher.

• Be sure to set a positive example.
