Approaching Problem Behavior In Class

Problem behavior in class arises every time. In fact, this is the most difficult part of any teaching job out there. Resolving such an issue in class is really challenging. The difficulty stems from the fact that behavior problems in class come in different forms. Unfortunately, each of these students has their own nature and motives as to why they did such a thing.

Since teachers are dealing with a diverse group of students from different families and natures, this is where the problem arises. Often, some of them are not that open in terms of their background, making them harder to decipher and decode. As teachers, we must take the whole class with us and never leave a student behind. Thus, if you have a student or two whom you think have problem behavior, it is a must to follow the steps in order to properly resolve it.

Step 1: Make a list of different behavioral problems. It is important to identify the various concerns that you have in your class. Be specific as possible and indicate which particular student did it. The aim here is to be precise with the name and action. If possible you can even indicate the day or time it occurred. You can list the things you observe so are the ones reported by your students. But do not list the venues that are touching on the emotional side of a particular individual.

Step 2: Target a behavior or two. It's time for you to strategize and work on resolving the problem in question. Having identified the various problematic behaviors, it is time to expose some actions. This is actually a trial and error process. Based on behavior, list down solutions that you think are likely to be effective. Each day, apply your standard solutions and record how the behavior was changed with the aid of it. Always remember that a solution could not be effective if have no other alternatives.

Step 3: Educate students. As a teacher you are there not only to preach the lessons you need to impart to the students, but social behavior as well. Therefore, it is also their responsibility to teach life lessons and morals in it. An effective way is to cover the whole class and not only targeting a single individual. You can talk about some customs and values and have them investigate and brainstorm, if it's good or bad. This is also an activity of reflection on their end.

Being a teacher is indeed a great responsibility. It comes with a greater task at hand. Therefore, it is our responsibility to inculcate the student life with morals and disciplines. This is also an opportunity to change their evil deeds and habits and to help them become more productive in the future with your aid. Take the problem behavior as a challenge and never a burden on your end.
