Peace Lutheran Family,
To say that I am filled with many
emotions as I write this article would
be an understatement.
I am excited to be joining you in
ministry, bittersweet to be
transitioning from my first call and a congregation that
loved me, nervous about the unknowns that lie around
the corner, grateful to know that I don't do this alone but
with your support and God’s guidance.
Some of you know me from my time at Peace in
2010-2011, some know me by the stories they've heard
and some are meeting me for the first time.
No matter our history together I am delighted for this
new chapter together as Pastor and people.
Next month I’ll have more of an introduction about
myself but for now I simply want to say how thankful I am
that the Holy Spirit has brought us together to do
ministry side by side.
Please feel free to stop by the office to say hello or invite
me out to your favorite spot to grab some food. I look
forward to getting started at Peace!
Shalom,
Pastor Brad
FROM PASTOR BRAD
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Greetings,
Have you had a chance to meet our new pastor? Pastor
Brad Dokken started here at PLC on June 15th. You may
remember him when he was our intern. Pastor Brad is
very excited to be here with us. If you get a chance stop
by and say hi, but remember to tell him your name as he
will have so many new faces to meet. Welcome to PLC
Pastor Brad, we are happy to have you here! Be watching
for Pastor Brad's installation as it will be in the very near
future.
Vicar Dara will be ending her internship at PLC on July
22nd. Vicar Dara has been such a blessing to us as she
has done so many neat things while she has been here.
Also during the transition time she was helpful to us in
many ways. We wish Dara the best as she goes back to
seminary to complete her final year. Thank you, Vicar
Dara for all you have done for us! You have been very
much appreciated.
The transformation of the circle drive is looking great.
The garden beds are all in and stocked with plants and
the huge tree stump has been removed. There is still
some work to be done. Thanks to Ryan Kangas and the
Boy Scouts and all of his helpers for the garden beds.
Also, I would like to thank Joe Friday and his crew of
people for all the hard work they did cutting up the
remaining tree and lining up the people to grind the
stump. Later on this summer Ryan will be starting phase
two of his project at the 8th Street church entrance by
the Free Little Pantry.
Hope your summer is going well and have a safe and
happy 4th of July. Be a blessing where you can.
Peace,
Jean Andersen
Thank you so much for a wonderful final Sunday
at Peace Lutheran. Your kind words and reception
filled me with overwhelming gratitude. It has been a
joy to serve you as Interim Pastor these past 10
months. Also much thanks for the farewell luncheon
and gift from my wonderful staff and leadership
Team and many others. My prayers remain with all
the people at Peace as you look to a renewed future
with the arrival of Pastor Brad.
God Bless you all,
Pastor Dennis E Ellisen

Dear people of Peace…
It’s almost hard to believe it, but this is my final
submission of Thoughts From the Vicar. What an
internship year this has been! It seems like
September 11, 2016 was just yesterday, and Pr. Dennis
and I were both walking into worship on our first day of
our respective gigs. The time has flown by with
countless joys and a few struggles, but what’s left in my
heart at this point is nothing but thankfulness. In reality,
I could list off about 1000 things I am thankful for, but
I’ll just narrow it down to 5 for the newsletter:
1. Your hospitality— I remember coming into the doors
on my first day. Though I hadn’t met many of you
yet, you welcomed me as if I’d been part of the
community all my life. Throughout the year you’ve
left space for me to be me (wild leggings and all),
and you quickly allowed me to be part of the
community and in relationship with you. You greeted
me and met me where I was, and you walked with
me through the best times and the hardest times.
Within this, I also give thanks for the intern
committee, who have met with me monthly and who
have given me endless nuggets of wisdom.
2. Your drive for mission— Ya’ll care deeply about
people of the Oshkosh community and beyond, AND
not only that, but you act on that care as well. From
what I’ve observed, you do this purely out of the joy
and the gift of grace you receive from God. This fills
me with hope. In seminary we hear a lot about
congregations who are dying because they put much
of their ministry focus on the people who are already
part of the congregation, rather than ministering to
and with the community they are in. Sometimes
what we hear in seminaries paints a very glum
picture, but YOU have restored my hope that there
are still congregations out there who are passionate
about serving the world around them. This has been
a true gift you have given me.
3. Peace Christian Preschool— The preschool wouldn't
exist if it weren’t for the congregation of Peace.
Before my internship, I had the privilege of being the
3k teacher at Peace Preschool for two years, thus I
had the privilege of working with some of the most
wonderful co-workers anyone will find on earth.
Beyond that, I got to work with some of most wonder
students and families on the earth. A huge part of
Peace’s role in the community lies in early childhood
education—this is a gift to all who attend school here
regardless of what program they are enrolled in.
This ministry is one that impacts not just the lives of
students, but of the staff as well. Thanks for that.
4. Your willingness to try new things— Whether it’s
trying new communion breads and wines, singing a
new hymn (or an entirely new liturgy), writing your
faith questions on a piece of paper and passing it to
your vicar, blessing as many ordinary things in life as
possible, or giving away bike helmets, your
willingness to try new things made for an ideal
learning environment for this student. Interns
wouldn’t be able to grow here at Peace if they didn’t
have the room to try new things. I’ve certainly gotten
a great amount of room to grow, and I’m thankful for
that space.
5. The Holy Spirit’s work through you— This is really the
big one here. Above all, I give thanks to God for you
and for your work with me this year. God has truly
been at work through you all year long (and long
before that too), and will continue to work through
you into the future. I am so stinkin’ grateful for God’s
grace and love that we are showered with on a daily
basis. I have been truly blessed to bear witness to
God’s work through you.
So what’s next for me? Come September I’ll be headed
back to school for one more academic year at Wartburg
Theological Seminary. Adam and I will continue to live in
Oshkosh, then I’ll be driving to Dubuque, Iowa on
Sundays and returning home on Wednesday afternoons.
Come March I will enter the assignment process, and
hopefully around June I’ll be getting ready to transition
into my first call. Though Adam and I will return to
worshiping regularly at our home congregation in
Neenah, I do sincerely hope our paths cross with yours
again in some capacity, Peace Lutheran Church, thank
you for a great year of learning!
Peace be the journey,
Vicar Dara

Station Leader / Servant Crew—A Station Leader has the important job of teaching children skills to complete their task for the station. The joy of this position is that you get to bring God’s truth to the kids in your own specialized way each day. Looking for people with specialized skills in wood working, baking, sewing, etc.
Crew Leaders—If you love the Lord and love kids, you can do this job! This is the perfect opportunity to really get to know the kids. You will have 8 elementary children to take through stations during the course of the morning and afternoon! And you won’t be alone. You’ll have at least two Jr. Crew Leasers assigned to your crew.
Jr. Crew Leaders—JCLs, you bring the excitement and energy to our camp that helps the children get excited about learning the Bible and what it means to be a superhero. You’ll be placed in each crew to help the crew leaders guide their children from station to station. You’ll get to play with the kids and participate in helping them do the activities planned each day.
Food Crew—The Food Crew will provide snacks and lunch for all the children at TVBS 17 throughout the morning and afternoon. These will be simple snacks but help will be needed to set up, distribute and clean up. In addition each student is provided a brown bag lunch each day of camp.
Registration and Promotion Crew Need Leader & Team Members—Leading up to TVBS CAMP, we’ll need your help organizing children into crews, creating name tags, making cards to invite friends to VBS, making a master binder of information for all children attending VBS, etc. During VBS, the Registration Crew will make sure each child is checked in and out of our TVBS Camp safely and smoothly.

Clean-Up Crew—After The Very Big Servant VBS each day and at the end of TVBS VBS week—VBS is fun and messy! We need a crew to clean the church each afternoon after VBS so we’re ready for another day. During the week, we need you to take out the trash and straighten up. When the week is done, plan on helping to put away supplies and inventory what is left over.
Hospitality Crew—We will have four or more college age students leading our morning sessions of worship and learning and they need housing for the week. Staff must be housed in at least groups of two. Responsible for providing place to sleep and breakfast / dinner meals as needed. To be scheduled with team upon arrival.

B LE S S ING O F T H E B ICYC LE S R ECAP
Peace Lutheran Church had a BIG day this past Pentecost
Sunday! The Holy Spirit was certainly alive and at work through
the Blessing of the Bicycles and Helmet Giveaway. Throughout
the day we met many of our Oshkosh neighbors, and celebrated
the love of bicycling. Many thanks go out to Officer Rachel
VanHorn of the Oshkosh Police Department who joined us to give
a safety presentation and to take a bike ride, Devin and Tori of
Winnebago Bicycle, and to DJ Mike Lokken for providing music
and bike facts during the event. It was certainly a gift to have so
many community partners present.
What an incredible thing it
is to say that we gave away
128 bike helmets to the
people of Oshkosh! Though
not all helmets were given
away at the blessing, all
were given away by the
following Sunday. This
speaks not just to the
needs that are in our
community, but also to the
generosity of the people of
Peace, and how you are
truly led by the Holy Spirit
to serve those around you!
Thank you to all who donated to sponsor a helmet or who volunteered at the
event. You truly embody the mission of Peace in showing how we are all
called to make disciples, and sent to share Christ

A Community Garden Comes into Being
After months of planning, fund-raising and securing materials, Ryan Kangas’ vision of a Community Garden at
Peace Lutheran Church took a big step on Saturday, June 3rd. This praiseworthy effort is the first phase of Ryan’s
Eagle Scout project.
With the help of a small army of volunteers from his family, Boy Scout
Troop, and Peace Lutheran Church, the courtyard by our circle drive
was transformed. The six raised garden beds will become a resource to
benefit both our church family and our neighbors.
The second phase of Ryan’s
project will involve renovating
the Little Free Pantry area to
make it more accessible and
community-friendly. That
phase is scheduled for later
this summer. He’ll need
volunteers then, too. And for
undertaking such a worthwhile
project, he deserves both our
support and our prayers.
Way to go, Ryan. You make us all very proud!

PLC CARING FOR CREATION Caring for Creation discovered three great recycling opportunities. With a convenient drop location in the main hallway.
We are called by God to “keep the earth” Genesis 2:15
Colgate has partnered with TerraCycle. TerraCycle is a global leader in recycling the hard to recycle waste. One of
the programs offered is the Colgate Oral Care Recycling Program. The program accepts oral hygiene products which
includes:
Any brand of toothpaste tubes and caps
Any brand of toothbrushes
Any brand of toothpaste cartons and toothbrush outer packaging
Any brand of floss containers
Products are turned into school supplies for the Kids In Need Foundation which is a foundation helping kids show
up to school the first day with school supplies.
http://www.terracycle.com/en-US/brigades/colgate
ColorCycle – an amazing new program devised to turn used markers into energy!
The markers will be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel.
This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!
You may ask - - Can any marker be sent in or just Crayola brand markers?
Crayola ColorCycle will accept all brands of plastic markers,
not just Crayola markers. Including dry erase markers and highlighters!
ColorCycle will eliminate placing hundreds of tons of markers into landfills.
The Crayon Initiative: Recycling unwanted crayons into unlimited possibilities.
Crayons are not biodegradable, the petroleum in the crayon will keep them
around forever. The Crayon Initiative melts down unwanted crayons to make
new crayons which are delivered to hospitals caring for children. Remarkable
recycling program, I encourage you to check out the website.

Greetings Family and Friends of Peace Christian Preschool~
In past summer months I have been able to go out and about and enjoy the sunny days with my two boys and be a bit carefree in regards to the preschool. This summer I am finding myself in the basement office more frequently than I’d like. We’re looking to hire two new teachers. We’re making renovations in the office, a classroom, and the storage room. And on top of that we’re mentally adjusting to programming changes regarding our collaboration with the Oshkosh Area School District. On an exciting note, our Sensory Garden and Butterfly Garden are doing well. Plan to take a look at them on the playground over the summer. Hiring new teachers: We are fully staffed for the two 4K classrooms which we will be hosting next year. With our current 3K teacher not returning for the next year due to her pregnancy, we are searching for a qualified 3K Lead Teacher. Additionally, we are looking to hire a preschool teacher who will in the 3K classroom primarily, but who will also be available to help in either of the 4K classrooms or the preschool office. Both positions are Monday through Friday, mornings only. If you know a great person for either position, please send them my way. Until then, pray for us to be patient and know that God is watching over us.
Renovations: To accommodate our growing staff numbers, and the number of people who work out of the preschool office, we need to get rid of the hodge-podge of furniture that we have collected for tables and shelving and get appropriate furniture in the preschool office. This will be a delightful update, but a messy process. One more messy process is clearing out and cleaning up our storage room. Our storage room, for those who do not know, is an unused locker room. The room has been filled with 30 years of preschool materials--112 lockers and a shower room chock full of possibilities. To accommodate a need for better access to materials by the teachers and a need for bigger storage areas, the lockers have been removed from the locker room and replaced with open shelving and clear plastic bins. I found that removing the lockers from the locker creates a strange nostalgia within me--there is a sadness to see a great room torn apart from it’s original intent. My saving thoughts are that great things will still come from the use of that room. Adjusting to program changes: Included in last month’s newsletter, our preschool is doing well and growing strong. Our program alone will serve 100 children; between the three programs, we will be serving 190 children. The growth for this coming school year is due in part to our changing collaboration with the Oshkosh Area School District. We will acquire a new classroom, but moving forward our 4K Lead Teachers will be employed directly by the OASD. This will be a huge mental transition, but great for our two staff members who deserve the benefits that will come from being employed by a larger organization. In closing, please enjoy the photos that we’re sharing from our preschool carnival and final days of school. We are blessed to continue to be a part of Peace Lutheran Church.
Wishing you Love, Peace, and Happiness, Heather B. Miller
