Religious NewsHoly Week is the most important and beautiful celebration in the church’s calendar. On Monday, the students celebrated Palm Sunday and watched and listened to the story of ‘The Donkey That No One Could Ride’. This donkey did not realise the important role he could play in accompanying Jesus on his journey. It was quite fitting to then read the following reflection written by Max Lucado in the parish newsletter:

Sometimes I get the impression that God wants me to give him something and sometimes I don’t give it because I don’t know for sure and then I feel bad because I have missed my chance. Other times I know he wants something, but I don’t give it because I am too selfish. And other times, too few times, I hear him and obey him and feel honoured that a gift of mine would be used to carry Jesus to another place. And still other times I wonder if my little deeds today will make a difference in the long run. All of us have a donkey. You and I each have something in our lives which, if given back to God, could like the donkey move Jesus and his story further down the road.

Many people have taken the opportunity and given something to Project Compassion during this season of Lent. Our aim is to impart on the students an understanding of how those in the developing world live and that ultimately; our donations are not only a gift to them, but to God.

Yesterday and today saw the running of our final two Project Compassion events. Both were a success, with every child receiving a cup of rice for lunch on Monday and participating in carrying bottles of water around the oval. A special thanks to Cathy Findlay, Annabelle Simon and Teresa Verner for being masters in the kitchen and preparing rice for every child.

Currently our Project Compassion tally is $3730. We still have some donations to count, but clearly we have reached both our goals now, what a truly amazing result! Thank you for actively and so generously supporting all of our school events. Your support is helping to empower the world’s poorest people to establish sustainable food sources.

Going home this week is a leaflet, originally written by Sr Kari, about the Easter ceremonies. This is a wonderful document which provides an opportunity to reflect on the days ahead. It also outlines the Holy Week ceremonies at St Joachim’s and St Agnes’.

Within the newsletter you will also find a page of photos illustrating the Stations of the Cross. Each class was involved in preparing a station and they have been on display around the school for the past week. I would like to thank the teachers and students for the effort they have put into making these so meaningful.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone for so warmly accepting me into your community for the past five weeks. It has been my pleasure to work with the teachers, students (in particular, the Joey Justice Crew) and Fr Joe and to get to know the parents. Thank you.

Wishing you a most joyous Easter,Kate

P&F News

Hawaiian Disco – Thanks! Last Friday night, our school community once again came together in celebration. The Tiki Bar was busy, the steak burg-ers sold out, the grass skirts were swaying on the dance floor and the glowing flower leis were a hit with young and old! The children danced and ran and screamed in ex-citement and the sweaty, glowing faces on the night were delightful to see! Thank you to all the Mums and Dads who helped with set up, working on the bar, cooking and serving the BBQ, selling glow products, emptying bins and helping with clean up. When everyone pitches in it makes for a fantastic night. A special thanks must go to our two ‘Hawaiian Mums’ Emma Whalley and Fiona Potter who once again did much of the planning, organising, purchasing and management of the disco. A heartfelt thankyou to you both. Fiona and Emma were ably assisted by the Events Committee and other parents, including Monica Katsanevas and her sister for the gorgeous decorations – a St Joachim’s Disco has never looked so good! Special thanks also to ‘Door Witch’ Pauline White, BBQ Master Chef team Kelly and Alan McInnes, (who also ensured there was enough gas in the bottles!) along with Colleen Rowan for looking after the glow bar - we sold out just about everything thanks to Colleen and the ladies who work the glow bar throughout the evening. To the special helpers from Year 6, Hayley, Lola, Libby, Clare and Bella who helped set up in afternoon, great team work girls! Thanks to John Nunan and Mark Kelly for lifting all the heavy stuff and Lou McInally for selling the raffle tickets. Finally, to Shelley Taylor, who managed to be everywhere, just when she was needed. Thank you. Not only was the night a great social event, we also raised record breaking disco profit of approximately $2,000 for the school. Well done everyone. The winner of the raffle, 4 tickets to the Movieworld Carnivale, was Lindsay Ahern. Congratulations!

This will be the last chance for students to get to purple belt, the expected level for recorder. Please encourage your children to work on the red and purple belt songs so they are ready for testing in May. Thanks.

PARISH MUSIC

Who me?Well, do you think music at Mass is important?

Absolutely!What can you do?

Who me???Yes, you!

I can sing in tune but so can everyone. No not everyone can, and we need more singers.

Who me? Yes, you! Look it’s time to stop thinking that others can keep the Church going. The parish needs both singers and keyboard players. Other instruments would be great too. Can you get a little group together who would provide music once a month? Would you like to join an existing group? Do you know anyone who isn’t even a Catholic but enjoys making music and might be interested? Take a risk, think creatively. So yes, I am talking to you, contact the parish office. Ph: 3349 2280 or E: [email protected]’s time to jump in, to contribute and to feel the satisfaction that comes from being generous!

HOLY THURSDAY COLLECTIONOne of the great symbols of Holy Thursday is the washing of the feet. It is a symbol of service and friendship which can be shown in many ways. Once again this year we can show our service and friendship in a communal way by contributing to the Holy Thursday Collection for the men of St Vincent’s Hostel, South Brisbane. You are invited to donate new clothing (underwear, T shirts, sweat shirts, etc) by bringing them along to mass on Holy Thursday evening, by placing in the baskets which will be in the churches from next weekend or dropping them into the school or parish offices.
