Principal’s Message 23rd June 2015Dear Parents and Friends,

Thank you for another great term at St Joachim’s. This week I look forward to visiting a number of classes to view students’ portfolios and work samples. The ‘Celebration of Learning’ open classrooms are a great way to see firsthand the fabulous work your children have been involved in over the first 6 months of the school year. I am always keen to see how much progress students have made. I often ask the students questions like, “What do you know now that you didn’t know at the beginning of the year?” I am always impressed with the myriad of responses I get from the students!

I take this opportunity to congratulate the teachers and students for the way they have worked together throughout the first semester of 2015. Thank you also to the parents who have readily assisted, at school and at home, in so many ways throughout the semester to ensure progress continued.

The best outcomes are possible when teachers and parents work together to combine their respective expertise and knowledge. Developing a positive partnership between parents and teachers is the same as for any other relationship. It requires mutual respect, listening skills, empathy and communication. It takes time to develop trust and confidence, and I thank the parents of St Joachim’s for the way that you ensure this remains a priority.

Despite what ‘grading’ is provided on the End of Semester Report Cards that come home on Thursday this week, what really should be celebrated is the amount of progress your children have made. Where were they at the beginning of the year? Where are they now? And then, what are the next steps?

• developing “emotional toughness” in daily routines to help students deal with everyday challenges

Dear Parents,

It was wonderful to have Bishop Oudamen preside with Father Joe at Mass as part of his pastoral visit to the Holland Park/Mt Gravatt Parish on Friday. Bishop Joseph commended our children on their participation in the mass and beautiful singing. It was lovely to hear the children singing along with the final hymn as they left the church.

St Vincent de Paul Winter AppealThere were great numbers of students (and staff) wearing ‘crazy mix and match’ clothing last Wednesday, as part of our school community drive for the St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal. As you can see from the photo with members of our Joey’s social justice team, Mr Marsh, from our local St Vincent de Paul chapter will be delighted with the great collection of tinned foods and donations we have collected. I know our local chapter of St Vincent de Paul have more and more families contacting them for support each year, so I sincerely thank you for your continued generosity.

Building Children’s Emotional Resilience Parent ForumA reminder of the parent workshop, this Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:30pm, facilitated by Educational Psychologist, Tricia Chandra. This will be held in St Joachim’s Church. Please RSVP via the school office.

“Don’t force your kids into sports. I never was. To this day, my dad has never asked me to go play golf. I ask him. It’s the child’s desire to play that matters, not the parent’s desire to have the child play. Fun. Keep it fun.” Tiger Woods

Enjoy your holiday break with your families and see you in Term 3 for another busy term of school sport!

Mrs D Jacks PE Teacher

For the past few weeks, grades 4, 5, and 6 girls have been participating in Interschool netball. It has been an enjoyable experience and we have had lots of fun. We have met new friends off court, but “rivals” on court!

Last week was our final, which we were very excited for. St Joachims1 and St Joachims3 came 4th.

Thanks to Miss Boyle for taking us, and Mrs Jacks for organising the event. It has been another great year.

Uniform Shop NewsDear Parents

Please be aware that from the start of Term 4, 2015, there will unfortunately be a small price increase in uniform costs.

The reason for this increase is an across the board price rise from our uniform supplier.

If you would like to purchase uniforms at current prices, please pop into the Uniform Shop in Term 3.

For parents buying a number of uniforms (for example, cur-rent prep students who need day uniforms for 2016 or for prep students starting in 2016) we can arrange to have uniforms put aside at the current price. Please drop into the Uniform Shop to discuss your requirements.

Thank youEloise CampbellUniform Shop Convenor

Hi my name is Fiona. I chose to do some drawings for my homework project. The reason I chose to draw the Taj Mahal is because of how beautiful and complex the patterns are and the ways it’s designed. If you don’t know, the Taj Mahal is a big temple located in India. I chose the Eiffel Tower as well because I also love how it’s designed. It’s one of my favourite monuments in the world. I love drawing different things and experimenting in art.

OPEN MORNING: SETON COLLEGETuesday 4th August starting at 9amin the College Chapel with an Information Sessionfollowed by a tour of the College. The Open Morning will conclude at 10.30am

SETON COLLEGE, MT GRAVATT EAST, a Catholic Co-educational College, is now accepting enrolment applications from students wishing to attend the College in Year 7 2016 and 2017 (maximum Year 7 enrolment is 65 students).

The College accepts students of diverse abilities, but seeks to provide opportunities for students who need to ‘pick up the pace’ of their school work in the primary school years. This is done through a curriculum in which core subjects are offered at many levels and classes with a very favourable teacher – student ratio.

In the Senior years (Years 11 – 12), the College offers students the opportunity to do QCE subjects and a variety of VET pathways.

Please visit the College website at http://www.seton.qld.edu.au or phone 3291 5333 to obtain an enrolment package.

PARISH MUSIC

Who me?Well, do you think music at Mass is important?

Absolutely!What can you do?

Who me???Yes, you!

I can sing in tune but so can everyone. No not everyone can, and we need more singers.

Who me? Yes, you! Look it’s time to stop thinking that others can keep the Church going. The parish needs both singers and keyboard players. Other instruments would be great too. Can you get a little group together who would provide music once a month? Would you like to join an existing group? Do you know anyone who isn’t even a Catholic but enjoys making music and might be interested? Take a risk, think creatively. So yes, I am talking to you, contact the parish office.
