Principal – Mrs Toni Skinner WEEK 5 31 May 2019 Principal’s Report Last week at our P&C meeting, we held an information session on BYOD (bring your own device) for Year 4 parents in preparation for Year 5 students in 2020. This was a very informative session and it was great to see so many parents attend. We will continue to work on our policy and over the next few months there will be opportunities for parents to come along to more information sessions. Thank you for all the feedback; our technology team is taking all of your suggestions on board. It was wonderful this morning to be able to hand out so many certificates to our Citizen of the Month students for Personal Best. Each child received their award and badge. They then enjoyed a morning tea with me, which was very yummy! Congratulations to all of the award recipients today and I am sure all their parents were just as proud of them as I was. Please see photo further in Newsletter. If for any reason children missed out today, they will be handed their awards and badges and will join in on our next month’s celebration. Mr Bennett and Mr Brady had the privilege of attending the zone carnival today for Cross Country. I am looking forward to hearing about the wonderful experiences and results from today’s carnival. I am sure each student will achieve their personal best and come away feeling proud of their achievements. There has been a few problems with our SMS attendance system over the past few weeks but I think we are back on track. Thank you to those parents affected for their patience as we rectified the issues. If your child is away and you do receive a text message please reply to this or let your child’s class teacher know the reasons for their absence within 7 days via note, dojo or phone call in order to meet departmental procedures and policy. If you receive a note home requiring a reason, please simply complete, sign and return with your child the following day. Next week we have some exciting netball gala days planned and I know the Stage 2 and 3 teams are very excited about their day next week. I would like to wish them all the best for next Tuesday and a big thank you to Mrs Buckton, Miss Smith and Mrs Goodall for their organisation and for escorting the students to the games next week. On Monday all students will receive a note and order form from the P&C. They are holding a Pie Drive once again this year through Thompson’s Pies. If you would like to order any of the delicious products, please get your orders and money in by Friday June 21 as they will be delivered to school on Tuesday July 2. Have a wonderful weekend! TECHNOLOGY NEWS

One of our school’s key improvement strategies in our 2018-2020 Strategic Plan is to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of technologies to enable them to respond innovatively to future challenges and needs.

As part of our school’s strong and ongoing commitment to 21st Century teaching and learning, we have developed a Kariong Public School Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy and program so that Year 5 students in 2020 and Years 5 and 6 students in 2021 will have the option to bring a Chromebook to school. BYOD is part of the evolution of our school’s technology use. We have a dedicated Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) room and teacher; a specialist technology teacher in our Computer Lab and an embedded K-6 ICT Scope and Sequence.

The BYOD program at Kariong Public School will be an optional program, therefore participation is not compulsory. If a student does not bring a device to school, they will have access to shared school owned devices and will fully participate in all classroom activities at school.

The school will provide the ability to connect the student’s Chromebook to a filtered Department of Education internet service which will provide a safe, secure internet access for students to complete school work.

More information about our BYOD program such as student responsibilities, student agreement forms, storage and Chromebook specifications is available on the school website https://kariong-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/learning-at-our-school/science.html.

We look forward to working with students and parents as we continue our exciting technology initiatives.

Senior Boys Soccer - Kariong vs Point Clare On Friday 24 May, the Senior Boys’ Soccer team played Point Clare at Fagans Park. To open the game we had a very strong defensive side and held nearly all of the possession. We were holding the ball well and created lots of space for Joshua to slot the ball in the corner of the goal. The next goal was by Flynn with a curving left footer to the bottom left corner. As a good defensive team, we didn’t let Point Clare get into our half. The next goal was by Flynn with a header from the edge of the box, which bounced and deflected into the top corner. We were dominating the game when Jye had a shot at goal but unfortunately, the Point Clare keeper palmed the ball out. Will had an air swing and missed the ball but Jye followed up and hammered the ball into the back of the net. Then the half time whistle went and the score was 4-0. In the second half, Point Clare were more aggressive yet we still defended and attacked as good as the first half. Josh took an amazing corner which the keeper fumbled and Cooper Jackson tapped the ball into the back of the net. The next goal was created by Blake with an amazing cross to Cooper Jackson who again fired it into the back of the net. Later, Point Clare gave us a free kick which Sam Flakus smacked into the bottom left corner. The next goal was scored by Cooper, again from a wonderful cross from Wilson. Point Clare gave us another free kick, which Flynn lobbed over the keeper. Later, Flynn crossed it in to Josh who tapped the ball into the back of the net. Toby created space for Flynn to score our twelfth goal. We were in their box dominating when Will had a shot, which was saved by their defender but gave us a penalty. Braxton stepped up to take it and smashed it straight down the middle, which hit the keeper’s leg and went into the goal. The final whistle went and Kariong was victorious 13-0. Next, we will play Valley View in the 4th round. Great work boys! By Zane L M, Wilson B and Flynn R

Reconciliation Week 2019

This year during National Reconciliation Week, Reconciliation Australia invites all Australians to learn more about

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories, to share that knowledge and help us grow as a nation.

This year’s theme is, “Grounded in Truth. Walk together with Courage.”

Reconciliation is ultimately about relationships and, like all effective relationships, the one between

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians must be grounded in truth. There can be

no trust without an honest, open conversation about our history.

Our Assembly was held on Monday 27 May 2019.

You may wonder why we have an Acknowledgment of Country.

Acknowledgement of Country says to the world, and more importantly to ourselves, that we accept the fact we are in

a place that has a history and story far beyond 220 years. It says to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fellow

Australians that we are all in the future journey of our country together.

Between the Dates of 27 May and 3 June, all of Australia and Kariong Public School recognises Reconciliation

Week.

What is reconciliation?

Reconciliation involves building mutually respectful relationships between Indigenous and other Australians that allow

us to work together to solve problems and generate success that is in everyone's best interests.

Achieving reconciliation involves raising awareness and knowledge of Indigenous history and culture, changing

attitudes that are often based on myths and misunderstandings, and encouraging action where everyone plays their

part in building a better relationship between us as fellow Australians.

Reconciliation means acknowledging Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders as the First Peoples of this land and

recognising that this fact is still important today. Past injustices shown to Indigenous people by colonial settlers, such

as the removal of people from their land and families (the Stolen Generations), are very relevant to the current

discourse. Australians must be aware of not only our colonial history, but the rich Aboriginal culture that was here

long ago and that still exists in the present time.

This year during National Reconciliation Week, Reconciliation Australia invites all Australians to learn more about

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories, to share that knowledge and help us grow as a nation.

This is a time when we should reflect on how far we have come in understanding and connecting with Aboriginal

People, their culture and their ways.
