CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) FOR THE PARENTS OF OWOSSO HIGH SCHOOL

Each Career & Technical Education Program meets annually with a program specific advisory committee. The primary purpose of the committee and members is to serve as a resource and a connection to the workplace for CTE instructors and administrators. Program advisory committees at the individual CTE program level make important contributions by keeping high schools informed of business and industry needs, providing professional development opportunities, and assisting the school in planning and implementing relevant Career and Technical Education programs for students. Program advisory committees are an important part of CTE, and the expertise of individuals from business and industry plays an integral role in providing high-quality CTE programs in addition to fostering the development a well-trained and well-educated workforce. On October 22, Owosso High School hosted fall advisory committee meetings for the Accounting, Business, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Engineering, and Woodworking Programs. The evening began with Mr. Phillips, OHS Principal, welcoming the attendees and then a brief CTE informational session was presented by Lori Johnson, CTE Coordinator. Following the presentation, guests were served a dinner which had been prepared by Chef Hannah, Chef Aaron, and the Culinary Arts students. The evening concluded with individual program break-out sessions to discuss specific program information.

News for Mrs. Comrie’s Class of 2015 and 2016: Seniors recently shown how to access college applications, request a college visit and complete their transcript request through www.Parchment.com. It was stressed that senior year is extremely important and if they have any questions they are urged to contact Mrs. Comrie immediately for support. The “3 Required Steps” were shared about planning their future now: (1) complete the application, (2) pay the fee, and (3) request-and-send your transcript using www.Parchment.com. Seniors are currently gearing up to participate in the national College Application Week to be held the first week in November and is appropriately titled, “Where Will You Apply Yourself? To learn more go online to www.ohsssc.com/college. News for Mrs. Gazley’s Classes of 2017 and 2018: In September students received handouts to review at home with a parent and included the following: (1) After School Tutoring Schedule, (2) Lunch time tutoring schedule, (3) a 4 year plan, (4) a quiz that reviews the content covered during the visit, and more. The classroom visit is a mini orientation to high school covering: (a) role of a high school counselor, (b) graduation requirements, (c) pre-college/high school planning, (d) transcripts and credits, and (e) goal setting. Mrs. Gazley has begun visits with Freshmen and Sophomores to update their EDP’s so please ask your student to log-in and show you this website and their EDP (www.careercruising.com). Their EDP can be thought of as an on-line file cabinet in which students can log things like test-scores, volunteer hours, job-shadowing experiences, goals and much more. This information comes in handy when students begin to apply for college/trade school and jobs. On another note, you can view grades and attendance as often as you like via PowerSchool. Most students feel that use of this website is key in being effective at the high school level. Though parents are encouraged to log in, it is an expectation that students do as well and take full ownership of their grades as it truly determines their future. General SSC News Advance Placement students must turn in their AP Agreement Form and fees to Mrs. Pilon by November 3rd. It was recently learned that Owosso High School qualifies for additional AP funding subsidies resulting in dropping the fee for those who qualify for the Discounted College Board Fee Waiver. Students on record as receiving Free or Reduces meals qualify for the fee waiver. This means the previously advertised fee of $68 per course is now $15 per course. Refunds to qualifying waiver student who’ve already paid will be processed in November. Communicate all financial concerns to your student’s counselor. Acceptable forms of payment are cash or check, with checks made out to Owosso High School. Extra forms are in the SSC. If you haven’t already, we’d like to invite parents to visit the www.ohsssc.com website for the Student Services Center. Information is also broadcast on Twitter: @OHS_WorldReady and Facebook: “Owosso High School Student Services Center”. The SSC department will be sending out email blasts about academic deadlines and urgent news throughout the year. The first email blast went out on Friday, September 19th. If you did not receive a copy of the email blast then it is possible the school does not have current email address(es) on file in PowerSchool. Another reason is that some email providers may view the email blasts as SPAM/Junk email and may have been bumped to the intended receiver’s Junk Mail folder. There are ways to resolve any email difficulties and parents are encouraged to contact Mrs. Pilon in the SSC for assistance.

Dear Parents, In the month of October the National Honor Society hosted the annual Mr. Wonderful pageant. The winners were Eric Locker in first place and Jaiden Sowash in second place. The crowd favorite was Thomas Horak. Student Council is beginning to gear up for the Owosso Cares Food Can Drive. This will begin on December 3rd. Staff members are nominated to be on the Can Court. They will, along with the help of students, raise as much canned goods as possible to help the needy in our community. The “winner” is crowned Can King or Queen of this entire event. We hope you will participate in this event as much as you can. Please pass the word around that if anyone in the community would like to donate to this worthy cause, please feel free to bring their canned goods to the Main Office at OHS.

Bond Proposal Q & A Q: What is the timeline for the construction of the secondary campus? A: After a successful bond vote on February 24, 2015 the tentative schedule will be as follows:

Design, Construction Plans and Bidding March 2015 to February 2016 (Staff will participate in the design process).

Construction of new additions April 2016 – December 2017

Classroom, Gym, Auditorium and Pool additions will be isolated from student activity

Phase 1 construction on interior remodeling June 2016 – August 2016 Phase 2 construction on interior remodeling June 2017 – August 2017

Complete/Occupy interior remodeling and classroom additions August 2017 (including middle school gym)

Complete Pool and Auditorium additions December 2017

High School will continue operations in the high school 2015 – 2017 (i.e. during construction)

Ideally, if all goes as planned, middle school may start in the new facility as early as September 2017 but there will still be work being completed on the gym and the auditorium. More than likely occupancy would not take place until January 2018.

Bond Q & A Q: Has the district considered the cost of renovating the current Owosso Middle School compared to the cost of the proposal on the February 24, 2015 ballot? A: Owosso Middle School boasts the best middle school staff and some of the best educational opportunities for students in the State of Michigan, including being an International Baccalaureate World School. To build a new middle school to suit the current needs of students and staff would cost approximately 72 million dollars. To build a new high school would cost about 94 million dollars. Owosso Middle School has been evaluated to determine its effectiveness as an educational structure inclusive of the lighting, security, accessibility for students with disabilities, site condition, sewage treatment and water systems, doors and windows, quality of technology, etc. To rehabilitate the current middle school without adding needed enhancements such as a new gym and a new pool, would cost approximately 20 million dollars. Owosso Public Schools takes great pride in maintaining our school facilities to deliver the best possible education and community access to our schools. Owosso Middle School is well-maintained yet it is the building that is in need of the most renovations at this time.

• Windows in the back of the building have not been replaced. These windows are old and present significant energy loss.

• OMS has a one court gym for over 700 students. This limits the ability to accommodate athletic practices and expand athletic opportunities for students. The concrete bleachers in the gym are an antiquated seating system that present safety challenges.

• The OMS classrooms and restrooms are in need of renovation. • The electrical system at OMS needs to be updated to allow for greater technology

accessibility. • Flooring and plumbing need to be replaced, parking lots and sidewalks need to be

resurfaced/repaired, the roof needs repairs, and there are hallway and locker improvements that need to take place.

The bond proposal would, in essence, provide two like new facilities under one roof at the cost of 54 million dollars.
