Black History Month at Topcliff
Throughout the month of February, staff and
students have been learning about and celebrat-
ing the great contributions made by Black Cana-
dians and people of the African Diaspora around
the world. Students demonstrated their learning
by participating in our third annual Black History
door contest and by performing at our Black His-
tory assembly. Congratulations to Ms. Verma’s
and Ms. Chatha’s classes who won the contest.
They will be enjoying a class pizza party. Please
take a look at this year’s celebration.

Summer Music
Camps
Enrich your child’s sum-mer vacation with music camp. Through three unique programs – Sum-mer Sounds, DownTown Strings and Toronto Summer Music Camps – the TDSB offers band, strings and orchestral experiences for students from grades 3-9. Registra-tion opens March 5. For more information visit: www.tdsbsummercamps.ca.
Are you a parent or caregiver interested in exploring topics like maintaining a healthy life-style and managing stress, supports and services for newcomers to Canada, and navigating the TDSB school system? Join hundreds of parents from across the city on Saturday, April 18th or Saturday April 25th for the annual Model Schools for Inner Cities Parent Acade-my Conference. The Parent Academy conference is facilitated by parents for parents on self-identified topics that support skill development, access to economic opportunities and informing parents on the most effective ways to navigate the education system with their children. A number of community agencies and other partners are featured at the confer-ence such as Toronto Public Health, Toronto Public Library and TDSB Newcomer, Youth and Kids.
There is no cost to participate in the Parent Academy Conference. This year, the conference will be taking place on two separate days – Sat-urday, April 18 at Cedarbrae C.I. and Saturday, April 25 at Thistletown C.I. Light breakfast, lunch, child-minding, interpreters and transpor-tation will be offered at both locations. For more information, including the full list of work-shops and how to register, visit www.tdsb.on.ca/modelschools .

Reading Tips for Parents
Here are some tips that you can use at home:
-Read aloud to your child a variety of materials (poems, newspaper, songs, magazines)
-Reread your child’s favourite stories, over and over and over again
-Point to words as you read
-Sign out books from the public library
-Write notes for your child to read
-Read with your child every day, including in your first language
-Talk about what you are reading
-Encourage your child to ask questions. This shows you if he/she understands what is read
-Play games– ask your child to find certain words or letters or cover a word and ask your
child to fill in the missing word

Celebrating Valentine’s Day With a “Cup of Love”
On February 11, 2015...a very cold winter
day, all of our Topcliff students from kin-
dergarten to Grade 5, enjoyed a hot cup of
vegetable soup as part of their morning
snack. Thanks to our wonderful nutrition
coordinator, Anita and her dedicated volun-
teers, we were able to celebrate our second
annual “Cup of Love” soup day. What a
great way to celebrate Valentine’s together!
Yummy soup!

April 2nd Bake Sale for Sick Kids Hospital
Ms. Ferretti and Janaiya J., Brianna A., Helen T. will be hosting a bake sale to support
the Sick Kids Hospital. Students are asked to bring in change on April 2nd so that
they can buy a special treat and help the hospital at the same time. If you are able to
donate some “nut-free” baked goods to be sold at the school, please drop them off at
the office on April 1st. Thank-you!
These are some of the beautiful door displays that students created for our Black History door contest showing “Acts of Courage” by various
influential individuals around the world.
