Principal’s Message:

The winter months have certainly been filled with a flurry

of activity. All of our families have now received first term report

cards for their children. Teachers recently hosted parent/teacher

conferences to discuss student achievement. Although you may not

have received a request to attend a conference, we are always

available to discuss any concerns you may have in this area.

White Haven would like to welcome newly-elected

Trustee Neethan Shan to our Ward. We certainly look forward to

working with him and are anticipating our opportunity to show him

around our wonderful school.

Just a reminder to White Haven families about

Kindergarten registration, if you have a child who was born in 2012

and will be attending White Haven in September, please call Mrs.

Malandro in our school office to make an appointment to register.

As you look through the remainder of this newsletter, you

will see that White Haven continues to offer valuable, rich

opportunities for our students. I would like to thank our committed

staff, our supportive parents, and of course our amazing students for

truly making White Haven “The Place to Be”!

Winter Weather Watch

As the weather continues to be very cold and snowy, we urge you to leave

home sooner and use caution when driving your child to school. Roads and driveways are very slippery, and children are often outside enjoying playing

in the snow. Encourage your child to walk to school to avoid congestion in

front of the school. Safety always comes before convenience. Please ensure that your child comes dressed appropriately for the weather wearing a hat,

mitts, scarf, boots, snow pants, and a warm coat. An extra pair of indoor

shoes is also needed. As some items may eventually end up in the lost and found, you are strongly encouraged to label all items.

For safety reasons, please remind your child that snowball throwing is not

allowed and playing/sliding on icy patches in the yard is very dangerous.

Your child should have a specific meeting place for parent/sibling pick-up at lunch and after school, so waiting time outside is reduced.

Exercise, socializing, and fresh air during the school day will enhance

concentration and student success; however, weather conditions sometimes warrant that indoor recesses, shortened lunch periods, and pre-entry periods

be considered necessary for student and staff safety.

Conditions warranting indoor recesses (TDSB Operational Procedure PR. 519 COM):

1. Rain, thunderstorms, lightning, hail, extreme winds, and

extreme cold. 2. Cold weather: When temperature and/or wind chill factors

indicate -28C or lower children will remain indoors due to

risk of frostbite. When the temperature and/or wind-chill factor indicate -20C to -28C, recesses may be shortened

and lunch recesses depending on local conditions.

When Your Child is Ill

It is important that your child stay home and rest so that he/she will get

better faster and will avoid spreading germs to the rest of the class. In fact, certain communicable diseases will require that your child stays home from

school to prevent other children from catching them. Plan ahead by making

arrangements as to who is going to look after your child when he/she becomes ill. Some of the common symptoms that indicate your child is ill

are: o Diarrhea

o Vomiting – two or more episodes in a 24-hour period

o Fever (greater than 38C) along with common cold symptoms such as sore throat, headache, loss of appetite, runny nose

AFRICAN HERITAGE MONTH

African Heritage Month is an opportunity for TDSB

staff and students to reflect on the history,

achievements and experiences of people of African

descent in Canada and throughout the world.

Throughout the month of February, schools across the

TDSB will engage in local initiatives and participate in

community events to celebrate African Heritage

Month; however, the importance of studying African

heritage is not limited to the month of February. The

TDSB is committed to supporting students by offering

the opportunity to attend programs such as the

Africentric Alternative School and the Leonard

Braithwaite Secondary Africentric Program.

We encourage our school community to take a look at

our Equitable and Inclusive Schools website at

www.tdsb.on.ca/equity/, which provides great resources

and supports for staff, students, parents/guardians and

community.

class are learning about what it was like

to live through the Civil Rights

Movement!

On February 10th and 11th, the students in the

Junior/Intermediate division were participating in Carnaval

de Quebec activities such as snow sculpting and painting

pictures of Bonhomme Carnaval. Carnaval de Quebec is

celebrated in Quebec for a couple of weeks where people can

learn about culture and explore many winter activities. The

students at White Haven had the opportunity to discover

delicious French Food and took many pictures with

Bonhomme Carnaval.

Year of the Monkey! Feb. 8, 2016.

April 15/2016-New PA Day!

An additional Professional Activity Day (P.A. Day) has been added to the

calendars of all schools in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB).

All TDSB schools will have a newly designated P.A. Day on Friday, April

15, 2016. This additional P.A. Day has been mandated by the Ministry of

Education as a result of provincial labour negotiations.

All TDSB schools will be closed to students on Friday, April 15, 2016. On

this day, teachers will be taking part in professional development on

provincial education priorities identified by the Minister of Education.

The remainder of the 2015-2016 school year calendar remains unaffected.

The Chinese New Year was celebrated with traditional food and attire in our Parenting and Family Literacy Centre.

White Haven Music Update: On Tuesday, February 9th, the 49 members of the White

Haven Concert Band loaded their instruments onto a bus and drove up to Richmond Hill to

participate in the Ontario Band Association's annual Concert Band Festival. As some of the

youngest participants in this provincial level festival, the White Haven musicians made us

very proud by giving a strong performance of some very challenging music and earned a

Silver Level evaluation from their adjudicators! Our band was also invited back to

Musicfest Canada - the National Level Festival - which takes place in Ottawa this

year. Congratulations to the concert band students on all their hard work and perseverance

leading up to this performance!

“White Haven PS Gets A Friendship Bench!”

On January 27th

, White Haven PS was the recipient of the “Friendship Bench”. Kyla and her organization

(KIWK) came to our school and taught the students of White Haven that bullying will not be tolerated and

that we should be “upstanders” rather than “bystanders”. Students cheered when the bench was unveiled and

or new Friendship Bench was in full use once it was placed in an area in its new home. By 2:00 pm, Mrs.

Reilly, our Principal, encountered her first experience using the bench. While sitting on the bench a Gr. 2

student sat beside her and told her that she had a friend that was being mean to her and so she told this friend

that she did not want to be friends with her anymore and now she is all alone. Mrs. Reilly took the

opportunity to walk this student through some self-help skills on how to manage friendship. THE FRIENDSHIP BENCH PROJECT CANADA “ …The Friendship Bench Project Canada. What is a Friendship Bench? The Friendship Bench is an interactive tool that provides children and youth a safe place to congregate in schools and communities. It is a tool, a gift, a safe place, to help open the lines of communication where friendships grow and blossom. It is a permanent fixture in school yards, schools and communities. Students may not have the necessary social tools at their disposal to voice their concerns about bullying or any other issue. Therefore, when students use/sit on the Friendship Bench it alerts teachers, staff, volunteers, or even another child/youth that they are in need of assistance. Another remarkable quality that the Friendship Bench brings to our communities is that when children and youth help and support a child who chooses to use The Friendship Bench, the very act of this social interaction also teaches kindness, empathy, acceptance, understanding, compassion and respect. The Friendship Bench is custom-made, with a hand-crafted heart in the centre – KIWK’s(Kill It with Kindness) symbol for anti-bullying. This heart represents love, peace, respect, acceptance – the messages we hope to convey through our endeavours. The colour blue is featured prominently, as it is the chosen colour for anti-bullying awareness and the multi-coloured seat represents the diversity of everyone in our communities. Our Friendship bench is made of 100% recycled plastic. This choice is deliberate as it is environmentally friendly and perfect for all weather conditions.” (Executive Director, Kyla Prosser)

Students work collaboratively with our ISP classes to create a level of care and understanding here at White Haven. Special Needs students learn how to focus and participate in regular class activities. When students are given the opportunity to work with a variety of students at all levels of learning, they grow to accept and support each other’s differences.

Integration and Inclusion-ISP Classes Working together helps to promote a level of understanding and compassion

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration has begun. If you have

or know of a child who was born in 2012, they are

eligible to register to begin Junior Kindergarten in

September 2016. Please share this information

with neighbours or friends who do not have older

children in school. To book an appointment for

registration, please call (416) 396-6645.

To attend Junior Kindergarten in September,

children must turn four by December 31st of that

year. To attend Senior Kindergarten, children must

turn five by December 31st of that year.

To Register a Child:

Parents/Guardians must bring proof of the child's:

- age (a birth certificate or baptismal record or

passport)

- address (two pieces of identification that show

your address, such as your telephone bill, Motor

Vehicle Ownership and Insurance, etc.)

- Immunization (the card that shows a list of

needles your child has received)

If your child was not born in Canada, please

provide proof of citizenship (PR card, confirmation

of permanent residence, passport or citizenship
